McCain: Congress should reconvene, vote on energy bill

CNN

"Drill here, drill now," McCain said Monday.

(CNN) - Presumptive Republican nominee John McCain called Monday for immediate congressional action on the nation’s energy crisis, joining a call by his Republican colleagues for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to call legislators back from their August recess for a special session.

The Arizona senator said he would return to vote on any proposal. McCain has missed Senate votes since April, including several involving major energy measures – one of which, a summer gas tax holiday, was a standard element of his spring stump speech.

Politics as usual – we've known since the 70's that we have an oil problem and that there is not enough to go around. Both the Dems and Republicans have stalled on this issue for the last 40 years. Time to get off our oil kick and find alternate sources of energy. A little leadership is needed - Ike had his roads, JFK the space program. Who will lead on the need for alternative energy .. bet it won't be the oil companies.

BTW – The President is the one who has to call a special session. McCain should be issuing his challenge to President Bush and VP Cheney.

Lawmakers can't arbitrarily come back in session on their own.

From what I heard today, the administration doesn't sound willing to call them back. Remember, he can order them back in session.

Has anyone considered the possibility of conspiracy between the Bush administration republican congress and "Big Oil" to force the repeal of restrictions on off shore drilling and the opening of the ANWR to exploitation? The democrats should be applauded for their refusal to "knuckle under" to the pressure when this action will not immediately result in lower gas prices.

Will he be attending? I don't think so he's a big VET supporter and he couldn't make back for that vote. So why is he out there telling congress to do something that he want be doing?

I'm sorry to say that Senator McCain is serving up a platter of "instant gratification" to the voters of the season. The Straight Talk Express left town long ago.

What a joke you are McCain!!! Not even any of my Republican friends are voting for you!!! Your last couple of ads were real funny, but you know, they really helped Obama and made you look STOOPID, LOL. I think July 31st was one of Senator Obama's biggest fund raising days ever. Because of your lame ads, we all sent Senator Obama $$$ to combat you. I think today will be a big fund raising day for Obama also.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SENATOR OBAMA, I just sent $47 to your campaign.

Mike in MN. Didn't you guys just have the one year anniversary of your highway bridge collapse. You do know that Gas Taxes pay for bridges and bridge repairs, right? So, a gas tax holiday should impair bridge safety. So, I think it is safe to conclude that you are not so thoughtful and should be ignored.

You also know that under McCain's policy YOU will pay higher taxes than under Obama's plan, right? It's a fact, google it.

How stupid can we be as Americans? For years Republicans have ruled as Presidents, the problem has been in the eyes of the republicans and now buying/playing into the foolish public sentiment of a quick fix the republicans are laughing at us because it is the oil people that will benefit first. So we should accept our fate and wait 7 years for the next drop of oil? You are all Idiots, self-serving, corrupt and ignorant people. May God never allow this country go down in flames like the great city of ROME did because of their wickedness to its citizens and other people in the world. If this country dares to VOTE republican this year again I don't care who the democratic nominee is, then kiss the America you know goodbye as the end of our reign as the superpower of whole world will visit us faster than we can say "Had we known".

I am getting sick of Senator McCain's wife being attached to his hip. It's not making him look any younger. It's just a constant reminder that he cheating on his first with with her and married her one month after finalizing his divorce. I'm glad Mrs. Obama shows independence and has a brain that thinks and moves on it's own.

Thank you ran – I forgot about that. There is no comprehensive energy bill. The Republicans just want to vote on offshore drilling ONLY.

The Gang of 10 came up with a BIPARTISAN plan (5 DEMS and 5 GOP). McCain is agains their plan. It was a start to at least get both sides to the table. There were things that both sides wanted and some they didn't, but they came up with COMPROMISEs, and McCain said he's not for it.

McCain has missed 150 votes and he wants to return to
    Congress to approve drilling?

Was $2,000,000 after he came out in support of drilling not enough?

    This is a farce.

McCain is pandering for oil money.

Where was he since 71/2 years now? He only mandates congress to reconvene now that's he's a presidential candidate. When did he start issuing orders as a presidential candidate? McCain should go get a life because the one he has now is not working for the American people.

My Friend McCain, you did not even try to make the gas tax break into a bill and you missed out on 100_ majority votes, like the GI.. and you said the oil problem have had 30 years to grow bigger, and you have been in senate for 26 of those years...
