Obama met with Gen. Petraeus while visiting Iraq last month.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – As speculation over the number two slot rises, presidential candidate Barack Obama and potential v.p. contender Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana joined forces Monday, signing a letter with eight other senators that urges Defense Secretary Robert Gates to increase medical coverage and care for Iraq war veterans left with serious brain injuries.

Watch: Obama pledges help for veterans

The senators point to a recent study from the RAND Corporation that estimates 320,000 troops from the two Iraq wars experienced a traumatic brain injury, or TBI.

Earlier: Obama camp launches military families working group

"We are concerned that at a time when TBI is recognized as the signature wound of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan," the senators write, "one of the most widely accepted and critical rehabilitative treatments for this injury… cognitive rehabilitation therapy, is excluded by the military's … health insurance program."
The other senators signing on to the letter include political notables Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass, Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass and Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-CT. Obama and Bayh's name are clearly perched at the top.

Gosh, I sure hope that Obama and Bayh can help the Pentagon and the White House with all of the traumatic brain injuries on staff!

Thank you OBAMA and BAYH for taking this issue withing our troops so seriously.

This is clearly the way to GO.

While mcCAIN (an angry man) is going negative again, OBAMA is focusing on what matters to the american people.

Bayh is by far the most qualified VP candidate. He has both executive and legislative experience and knows how to win in a Red state. Bayh as the VP gets my vote, my campaign volunteer time, and my monetary campaign contribution.

Actually Obama has been quite supportive of mental health advocacy for veterans. I work in the mental health field-legislatively, and the VA and the Administration routinely reject the notion that veteran mental health services are inadequate. I have never seen McCain’s name appear in contradiction to the VA or Bush, he is rather silent on this issue.

Obama did go see troops when he could or when it would not be seen as a political move. Mccain has not been so honorable when he sees our toops he makes a point of policalizing his visits. People please for the good of our country stop accepting the lies of the republicans.

Please name one veterans group that supports John McCain. He has voted against the majority of bills that would help vets yet he always says he is the one who supports the veterans. Get the facts. Don't believe it just because he says it. Obama has voted much more often to support benefits for the troops. Check that out. It's the truth!

Hussein Obama has no desire to help the vets…he is just trying to get votes. I don't believe the military personnel will vote for a person that wants to cut the military and our homeland security by getting rid of the nuclear power. You Democrats need to read his book to see how he really feels about Americans and his Muslim religion. You need to read before you make your offhanded remarks.

Brandon in Seattle   August 4th, 2008 4:14 pm ET

More ideas from the Obama campaign. Wheres the ides from McCain..? Oh yea, I remember, not IDEAS just high school gossip and lies! More of the same McCain supporters need to get smart QUICK!! Come on people why trash ideas?..just like the trashing of a tire gague..just a tire gauge huh?..look at the whole plan people, then again McCain supporters can't retain that much information, they only understand the one or two sentence gimmicks and lies. All we hear from republicans is , ahh Paris, ahh Brittney, ahh Muslim…and they call Obama out of touch and elitist?..give me a TBI. How narrow minded and out of touch is this $600 pair of shoe wearing elitist McCain?..so out of touch he thinks we'll fall for the "off-shore drilling" to destroy some more of our environment, and fill the pockets of their big oil buddies!!..that way they can all get some $600 Ferragamo's!! Let's get smart America..pursue ideas and facts, and dont trash and idea just because Obama changed his mind to it..wouldn't we rather have someone in office that would embrace the right ideas and be ok with being wrong than have another bush that would ruin our country just to not admit that he was wrong!!
Let's get it right this time!!!

Vig   August 4th, 2008 4:12 pm ET

Is it my imagination or is Obama's hair turning gray around the edges since he started his campaigning? If this guy is turning gray now can you imagine what he will look like if he gets elected? Every day brings a new flip-flop – he just isn't Presidential – he just wants the world to believe he is. Nice acting job.

it's so sad that so many anti-obama people really think he does not like the troops. with one vets group, mccain's record is an F. with another, it's 20%.

for obama, his record is a B+ with one group and 80% with another. it's false to say he didn't visit the troops while overseas. even the ad mccain put out included footage of him playing ball with the troops on that trip! and there was coverage of him having breakfast with the troops on that same trip! he wasn't able to visit the troops on one leg of the trip only.

in the meantime, mccain mocks one small line of several pages of energy plans, wasting time and money. i'm not sure why people would fear electing a smart president again. do you really want to elect a president who wastes money this way and has no time to address serious issues?

Doug   August 4th, 2008 4:07 pm ET

I think it's good that Obama and other Senators are coming out to show more support for the health of the troops. John McCain clearly has turned his back on his fellow soldiers which I find very troubling. Not sure if it will be enough to change the minds of some of these swing state voters – who just might want 4 more years of Bushstyle policies.

Well I worked in the mortgage business during his administration as president. His way of underwriting and watching and responding to complaints of fraud and racially over underwriting for real estate loans in favor of 78% Debt to income and the risks of stated income and misuse of loan officers lead to the down turn of the Savings and Loan and the present economic real estate disaster!!!! Racially he by negating his responsiblity said that blacks get prvilidges for politics!

to all of you "never obama" folks—what is it that you hate about the guy?? it makes absolutely no sense for anyone who makes less than about 500k a year to vote for mccain! he has said he plans on just following blindly in bush's FAILED shoes. bush is the WORST president in u.s. histry, and you want to vote for a guy who supports him and promises to continue his FAILED policies??

PLEASE research obama ON YOUR OWN. dont listen to the white shills like hannity, limbought, etc… talk about elitist, they openly say things like, "you cant have money from my wallet…" they are pigs!

so here are some obama FACTS:

1. if you make LESS THAN 250K a year, YOUR TAXES WILL GO DOWN, NOT UP!!!!

2. obama wants to tax the DISGUSTING, history-making profits the oil companies are making off all of us right now!! can you imagine how much money that will be??? and with a democratic pres and congress, IT WILL HAPPEN (cuz they wont have a repug oil president blcoking everything).

3. obama SUPPORTS our troops. he wants to have all the medical care they need—physically and emotionally.

4. obama supports helping out the families of our troops, that have been devestated by this disastrous economy and president!

5. obama is LIKED around the world, this is VERY important when it comes to foreign policy. there will ALWAYS be terrorists and there will never be peace in the middle east, so more wars in the region just make more money for bush and his pals (which is their goal).

6. obama wants us off oil. he wants to put a lot of the oil company profits into renewable resources, LIKE THE REST OF THE CIVILIZED WORLD IS DOING!!! oil is the past, oil makes us weak. and dont believe the righties that we have enough oil, we dont. and offshore drilling is an absolute JOKE!!!

this list goes on and on. it's a very simple choice, a prosperous peaceful america and world—or more of the same cr@p we're dealing with now!!!

the only people who have an "excuse" to not want president obama is redneck racists and the pro-life ultra-conservatives. but the VAST majority of america will benefit ONLY from obama!

AF Vet and you others claiming Democrats don't care about vets, you need to stop spinning out B.S. and think like grownups for a change. Democrats have sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, and other loved ones in the armed forces too. They die as easily and serve just as well as those loved by Republicans. Some of us have generations of military in our families who have proudly served. It is one of the most un-American things I can think of to try to attach party to patriotism. I do know that a lot of Democrats tend to think that American lives are dear and that although we will sacrifice them for causes greater than ourselves, we should be sure that we are sacrificing for principles worthy of American blood and in a way that does not dishonor that sacrifice. If we all really cared about Vets, we would fund them properly for equipment from the start of a war, rotate them properly to keep touch with families, keep diplomacy active while they fight, give their families adequate housing and benefits and support while they are away, and then when they come back injured or come back at all, make sure their sacrifice gets them excellent health care, benefits, education and support for the stress, rather than putting them through all sorts of hell and generally forgetting about them. Waving flags, putting bumpers stickers everywhere and denigrating anybody who point out abuses of our soldiers doesn't do the country justice or the soldiers who defend it and execute its policy.

I am a democrat and was a Hillary supporter that has been asked to change my loyalty to Obama.
How can I? He has been in the Senate for 3 years and is now finally deciding to do something other than criticize others actions? This new bill sounds good ( I haven't seen enough info to knwo for sure) but where was he on helping the troops a year ago? Where was he on bills on health care, the economy, the engery crisis?
Now he wants us to use stratigic reserves and not consider that pandering but Hillary and McCains gas tax holiday was?
In June there was no way he or his backers would agree to seatign the full Florida and Michigan dlegations but today its OK?
Who is this man and why doe she treat us like we are idiots?
McCain is out of touch and too old for the office and frankly I have very different beliefs than him, but at least he's more true to his word.
Obama needs to step back and admit he hasn't learned enough about the issues to be the candidate this parrticular year.

Senator Obama is such an decent, upstanding, intelligent, kind human being. He really cares about people. CNN has never had a story on McCain's voting record when it comes to the troops — worst of any senator. He has been against Veterans and families of MIA soldiers getting any information on their missing kin. Watch the video of his angry exchange with a family member of a MIA soldier — google it. The MSM does not report on any of these stories, but thank goodness for the internet. A lot of truth can be uncover on the internet. Bloggers — you have me laughing at work with the nicknames you come with for McCain. You are really creative — McClone, McWar, McOld, McLair, etc. Keep up the good work!

Reading those posts are quite enlightening. Do people notice that every democrat comes up with facts, policies and all the reps just throw insults (when it's not plain lies).

This phenomenon is quite amazing but tough to explain. One reason would be that the reps have a complete lack of morality, which would explain the ease with which they lie. The other one, not politically correct, would attribute a lack of intelligence to reps supporters, explaining why all they can do is to repeat the lines they heard on Fox news.

Obama is like the leaves blowing in the wind. It depends on which direction the wind is blowing as to which side he is on. He is looking more and more unprofessional and I must say that this man is not capable of leading a big country like America. If you fellow americans want this great country to become like a third world country then vote for Obama but if you want this country to prosper then you will NOT vote for Obama. Obama says what he feels that you the voters want to hear that's why he keeps changing his stance. I am so disappointed thet the DNC and superdelegates let a good candidate not get voted in as the nominee and instead selected this person who is only going to let the republicans win again in November. Shame on you DNC and superdelegates and you will all regret it in November and you can only blame yourselves for the loss.

Deb, Okalahoma – Get over it. Hillary lost. Quit whining and/or cutting off your nose to spite your face.

And for those who think he didn't visit the troops, it is pretty clear that you are NOT paying attention. He visited the troops in Iraq on his recent trip. How did you manage to miss that with all the coverage that he received and that you complain about?

Those critical of this move are grasping at straws. If he didn't do something, you would be critical. Now that he did, and did so before McSame, you are saying that it is self-motivated. You can't have it both ways. I am a Democrat training to help brain-injured soldiers retain benefits. What are you doing?

NeverObama: Please go to Google for Government (BTW created by Obama and a republican member of congress) or what ever way you want to to look up McCain's record on voting for veteran's benefits. Obama has a far better voting record favoring veterans and those who are currently on the front lines than McBullsh!t has. One of those votes took place recently, and McBullsh!t voted against it because he'd rather give good benefits to those in an attempt to force our men and women in uniform to make the military their career ONLY. Not everyone wants to be John McCain when they grow up. He is a lying manipulative joke.

Phil   August 4th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

My favorite thing about Democrat lawmakers is that their solution for any and everything is tax the wealthy, both people and business. My favorite thing about Democrat electorates is they don't understand that they will be negatively impacted by higher taxes and they vehemently attack the Republican candidates without any facts. It is just simple name calling. For 2008, they use "Mc" and add a term behind it. Democrats can never spit out facts…just the hearsay they candidates preach…for 2008, hearsay their new Messiah preaches. Democrats remind of kids; their answer for everything is "because" or silly name calling. Want to see how socialistic Democrats are, go check out that Employee Free Choice act that is trying to give unions superpowers. Obama is supporting that big time…so is the Communist Party of America. Hmmmm!

Chuck, Sacramento   August 4th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

Again, Obama uses one of Hillary's big issues. She was the one who brought it to our attention, explaining what sort of injuries they were, and the urgency of meeting the needs of these injured soldiers. SHE is the one with the really important issues and Obama, with nothing of his own, is now using hers. What a mistake the DNC, Dean, and the Superdelegates made when they appointed Obama as the the Democratic candidate!

Erin in Edmonds WA   August 4th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

To H: If you are planning to vote for McCain, please remember that it is considered a form of mental illness to be fixated on one person to the point of mad obsession. If you require futher explanation–recent ads and events clearly show that McCain is completely obsessed with Obama–and he has good reason to be :-)

It Be Me   August 4th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

some of you McCainadics crack me up…..

****Obama doesn't support our troops****……and then when this story comes out…..

******Obama is only doing this to get coverage*****……
make up your freaking minds!!!!!!!!!!!!

and please state for me, what in the last 6 months or so, has McCain done for the troops….other than tell them they may have to stay in Iraq for another 100 years…

You'd think after the Iraq trip, they would learn….but noooooooooooooo…

Sam, MI   August 4th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

Offshore drill! drill!! drill!!!. On your marks, set, GO! Are we ready to drill our way out? As an immediate solution, and when I said immediate, I mean a solution by next month, three months – ok, Nine months. Can McCain look the American people in the eyes and unequivocally affirm that we start drilling here and now today and in three months, six months, or nine months, we would have an immediate solution at the pump to solve the energy crises? Can McCain affirm to that? One to three months or at most in six months, our energy headech would be solved by offshore drilling? Bush has been in the office for the past seven and half years and as an oil man from TX, he has not made it an urgency issue to beat the drum to drill offshore and he had a republican controlled congress at his disposal. But all of a sudden and less than four months to leave office, Bush and McCain are blaming the Democrats for not helping the American people drill offshore to drill our way out of years of Bush/McCain neglect. That ironic! Less we forget, Bush was the President that urged the American people to buy SUVs – how we forget.

NO McCain….America is NOT for sale…IF you were thinking about the country you would spend more time following Obama's leadership in bringing people together as opposed to trying to tear people apart…Obama is a real leader, not a swap meet politician like McCain who's up for the highest bitter…get it BITTER. Obama 08′ "dropin it like a sock"

Sabreen60   August 4th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Veterans who are "aware" know that McCain has voted AGAINST the last 10 bills to help veterans. He was AGAINST the Webb bill. Obama sponsored a bill in the past to help veterans with personal things like paying for phone calls and obtaining food, etc.

Vote Obama.

JR, Plymouth   August 4th, 2008 3:37 pm ET

Yes, one waits with baited breath for the McCain Straight Talk Express to further derail with another petty attack on this one; the mind boggles as to how idiotic their next reponse will be, and whether they can still top themselves (or bottom out). What a shame to see this candidate put winning ahead of his fast-depleting reputation; I used to respect him even when disagreeing with him, but now he elicits only profound disappoinment in how effectively he is squandering his past in pursuit of his ever-less-likely future.

Hawaii   August 4th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

Whoever Obama's VP pick is, he will make a rational decision based on many, many factors. Regardless of such, I know he will surround himself with only the best. He has shown this during the primary season, and he will over time continue talking about the issues that face our country — and not stoop to the low road that McCain has done.

In fact, I hope McCain continues to waste his money putting out dumb commercials. Can't wait for the first debate!

Very clear and stark choices here, folks. Either we continue the republican way and we all get screwed in the rear, or we change direction for the sake of our country.

If McCain truly cared about veterans, he would have supported the new GI Bill, which he didn't even bother to show up to vote for.

I AM NOW NO LONGER A LIFE LONG TRUE BLUE DEMOCRATIC VOTER.

my FIRST defection from voting for the party nominee. I do not care for stolen rigged fixed primaries.

There is an email going around the internet , allegedly from a soldier in Afghanistan, saying that Obama snubbed the troops in Afghanistatn and did not visit with them. I would like to know if Obama really did visit with the troops in Afghanistan or whether he only visited with the commanders. With today's campaign mud slinging, it is difficult to know if that email is true or not. I would like to know if Obama really spent time visiting with the troops in Afghanistan, or whether Obama's Afghanistatn trip was just a political photo opportunity.

Bill from ALabama   August 4th, 2008 3:35 pm ET

It is about time, someone started taking care of our troops. Hillary ,I'm sure ,is tired of standing alone in that corner! She must have told him what to do!!! Well,as much as it is appreciated for the troops,it doesn't erase Obama's indifference in Germany!

C E H S   August 4th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

You mean 'himself' finally actually did something as a Senator? I don't believe it, Mr. Do-Nothing but Present actually did something. Shame it is something that has already been done. Of course if the man did his job as it is intended to be done instead of using it as a stepping stone to his next objective, he would have known. And anyone, who accuses Mccain of having TBI is a pig and needs to spend a few years dangling in a cage, then you can mouth off you idiot, moron. I'll bet most of you Bamama fans have never done anything worse than burn your hand on your latte'. I hope Bamama wins, and you all will be living on welfare.

Phil   August 4th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

I just can't wait for Obama to say that he is in favor of opening up offshore drilling and drilling in Alaska. His mindless drones will then start saying how great he is and that he is showing he has a flexible campaign strategy for solutions…clearly forgetting they have been ranting for weeks that offshore drilling is merely a gimmick. Bahhhhhh goes the sheep.

Tony Z- MD   August 4th, 2008 3:32 pm ET

Compare McCain and Obama's voting records for Veterans. What is McCain's real record in Vietnam- he knows how to win wars. He was never a military commander.

About the Present vote that is an Ilnois thing. Understand the difference.

The republicans say they support the war. The time has come to institute a draft for military service. Let everyone do some of the heavy lifting. Our gutless legislators are home for five weeks doing nothing. When are people going to demand results from these sleazebags? Draft everyone, see if the republicans still want the status Quo. Just more photo op garbage from Obama.

Veterans already receive high-quality care for traumatic brain injury and other conditions. You should visit a military hospital some time — I regularly visit one in San Diego, where my friend is treated.

You have no idea how fabulously veterans and active-duty personnel are treated and cared for with the latest technology and patient care services. The rest of U.S. health care should be this outstanding!

NoMccain   August 4th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I am deeply disturbed in both candidates now, they are moving discussiion of tapping into ANWR as if you can count on it as being reality now. This is fundamentally dangerous to the US in many ways. 1. It perpatually adds to global warming and does not solve the problems we face. 2. The last pristine place in the nation will be destroyed without batting an eye. 3. When we run out of our oil, think of even higher gas prices, if other oil-rich nations decide to let us live. 4. Relying on the oil companies for scratching our backs later is very scary, because they will follow where the money takes them, i.e. China nad India. 5. Finally, there is NO GUARANTEE that the oil tapped from ANWR will ever hit the US market. It could be sold to the Chinese or India. ASK QUESTIONS PEOPLE!!!

Clearly this should not be a political issue. Every Senator of both parties along with Independents should be advocating for every available help for those with brain injury. The more immediate help and retraining of the brain the less long term cost to tax payers. The brain is elastic, but early help is essential.

David   August 4th, 2008 3:20 pm ET

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows the race for the White House is tied with Barack Obama and John McCain each attracting 44% of the vote. However, when "leaners" are included, it’s McCain 47% and Obama 46%.

McCain is currently viewed favorably by 55% of the nation’s voters, Obama by 51%. That is the lowest rating for Obama since he wrapped up the nomination. Obama is viewed favorably by 83% of Democrats, 22% of Republicans, and 47% of unaffiliated voters. For McCain, the numbers are 87% favorable among Republicans, 26% among Democrats, and 61% among unaffiliated voters.

In reading some of the comments I realize we are in a sad state. As one presidential hopeful concentrates on the issues…the bashers keep bashing. He tries to get help for the veterans but has to get questioned on a two week old issue of "not visiting the troops.. Come on people let's focus so we can get this right. Our country is on the brink of a disaster, please let's join together to elect the better person which is Barack Obama. This November is the most important one I can remember. McCain has no real answers that is why he is taking the time to have "playful, humorous" ads developed.

Jeez. The "why didn't you go see the troops" smear is so ridiculous. McCain's own campaign on their blog even acknowledged that they had the story wrong. He did go see the troops, several times. They even used VIDEO of him visiting the troops in their attack ad. But please, continue to distract voters with falsehoods because that's the only way you'll get McCain elected.

Andrew   August 4th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

I'm glad to see TBI is being addressed in this campaign. I just hope that this won't end up being another forgotten campaign promise.

The tremendous strides being made in the areas of Poly-Trauma is amazing, and can only continue with those in need receiving and being covered for the newest and best treatments. I applaud all the Senators involved in this letter – but as it's only a letter I will save true kudos when something is actually changed and done to help guarantee this countries wounded warriors get the best care that we can provide for them!

While I know it was not the intent of CNN with this report to let its audience know that Obama supports America's troops, thanks for letting your audience know that Obama cares about America's troops.

Question: are all of the other "political notables" (except for Hillary Clinton – who everyone knows Obama will not pick as his VP) potential running mates for the VP slot be virtue of having signed the letter to the Pentagon?

I think you folks over at the Clinton News Network should realize by now that Obama neither wants or needs your counsel on who he should pick as his VP.

Rich McKinney   August 4th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

I'm sure that the McCain camp will make this out to be another bad move. The McCain, and much of the media seems to attack every thing the man says or does. McCain, so committed to no negative campaigning, has certainly lost sight of that pledge.

Obama is a great American, and for the most part seems to be trying to run a decent campaign. He has been attacked from so many directions. I truly don't understand how anyone can support the Republicans for another four year term.

I wish he would be allowed some breathing room. No one mocks our illustrious current president when he gets on national television to tell us how strong the economy is. Meanwhile, Americans are hurting unlike they have in a very long time with higher prices on everything

IF YOU ARE NOT VOTING FOR OBAMA BECAUSE HE IS NEW ON THE SCENE OR BECAUSE HE IS BLACK, HUMBLE YOURSELF AND VOTE FOR ONE THAT WILL HELP THE ECONOMY, GAS PRICES AND GETTING OUR TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ AND THAT WILL BE OBAMA. I ADMIRE OBAMA HE IS WILLING TO CHANGE POSITION AND IDEAS IF IT WILL HELP THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN A GREATER WAY. I LIKE OBAMA OUT HELPING THE TROOPS WHILE MCCAIN IS ATTACKING WITH HIS IMMATURE AND PETTY ADS. MCCAIN IS ONLY ATTACKING OBAMA'S CHARACTER BECAUSE HE HAS NO PLANS OR IDEAS TO PRESENT TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

Gary   August 4th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Evan Bayh is a good choice for VP. He seems to be about doing the right things and doing them right. Keeping our jobs at home and not selling our country to foreign interests. Good on economy and immigration. I truly believe, he believes "THIS COUNTRY IS NOT FOR SALE" McCain means more Bush no thanks

Get a Clue, St Louis, MO   August 4th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

McCain and his campaign will never be able to match the tenacity or sincerity that Obama has for the American public, including military personnel. It just amazes me that McCain hasn't done anything to address this issue or any other real issue that we have as a country. When exactly is he going to inform the public just what he's about or what his policies on anything are? Go Obama! Oh and Happy Birthday!

Brian in Los Angeles   August 4th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

Obama is such a joke. I can't believe the Democrats are backing this clown. Hillary would have been way ahead of McCain had she been the nominee.

Looks like I am voting for McCain…or maybe the Green Party, who knows…but it sure isn't going to be a vote for Obama!

Kathy   August 4th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

McCain is already voting no on Vet bills, despite saying he hasn't. The same a saying he voted yes on a bill and was not there for the vote. McCain lies out of both sides of his face! McCain IS NOT for the vets, he is for the lobbyist, McCain has 59 lobbyists raising money for his campaign, more than any of the other presidential candidates, according to the latest finding from government watchdog group Public Citizen.

Ever see a restaurant open in your neighborhood only to see it shut-down in 6 to 8 months? That's because the owners wanted to be Maitre D's without having the experience for running a restaurant.

Clearly, John McCain is head and sholders above Obama when it comes to experience.

I'd like America to stay open beyond 6 to 8 months. That's why I'm voting for John McCain, and why everyone wanting an experienced hand at the helm should, too!

Cotton Picker 1808   August 4th, 2008 3:11 pm ET

Obama has shown consistency to military families and Veterans issue since his days as an IL legislator. McCain with 28 years in Congress has shown a willingness not to ever support Veterans issues, it makes you think, what was John McCain "brainwash" about while a POW is he a candidate for Russia in disguise?

Beth from Kansas   August 4th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

MCain was a real hero 40 years ago, but that does not make him a hero now. He was held captive for most of the war. How does that make him an expert on national security? Read Obama's books and see who the real thinker is. If the country hands the presidency to McCain, it deserves what it gets. As for Bush, he simply stole it. I personally do not think either of the two candidates could respect himself if he did such as THAT!

Ted   August 4th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

Instead of slicing and dicing everything that Sen. Obama does and making crude, "funny" ads that distorts Obama's image, Sen. McCain should be fighing for veteran's health issues also. Instead he is dead silent regarding our veterans —not even having the decency to show up to vote for the G.I. Bill.

Our soldiers have performed valiantly and they get no help from the "war hero" who is running on the POW ticket to get him to the White House.

John McCain: The Maverick that has turned into a Muckraker.

SUNSHINE   August 4th, 2008 3:09 pm ET

I would love to hear what McMeanie has to say about this. It would be amazing for him to attack Obama on this issue because essentially he would be attacking himself. Its a shame all of his campaign money will go to negative attacks and fear/war mongering.. way to go McCain

Well, I guess it's the least he could do after he repeatedly spoke out and voted against his own party's efforts to cut off Iraq war funding and also against setting a timetable for withdrawal… while at the same time having the gall to position himself as somehow an 'anti-war' candidate. I think MSNBC had a nice article on Obama's actual senate record on the Iraq war…

Why is the Mccain camp constantly putting out all these stupid adds, do they think this will get Mccain elected in Nov. Would be a lot better if they talked about the issues that concern the american people. They are just as bad as the puma people who say they are going to vote for Mccain, it goes to show they werent much of a Hillary supporter by acting like this. They are nothing more than a bunch of racists and American dont need these kind of people.

What Rich in Seattle said. Also, Joe Lieberman is NOT a Democrat – his designation is Independent, although he isn't really.

MoveOn   August 4th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

Now that CNN's pet Obama has finally adopted John McCain's positions on offshore drilling and the importance of energy independence, and even though he's too arrogant to admit the surge worked and he was wrong on that, too, maybe we'll start to see some balanced reporting from CNN.

Austin   August 4th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

I agree w/ ya Rich. But you know McCain's come back "he didn't visit the troops in Germany". Blah, Blah, Blah….

What a comeback week (Monday) for Obama !!!!

Louisiana Ed   August 4th, 2008 3:07 pm ET

If someone were to ask McCain why he didn't sign this letter I'm sure he would say he wasn't asked, or was not aware of it, which would just be another of his flagrant lies.

Mike in West Virginia   August 4th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

First of all, Lieberman sure isn't a Democrat. He's an Independent who just caucases with the Democrats. I sure wouldn't want to be a co-sponsor, even of just a letter, that Lieberman had signed. He's a McCain man all the way.
That said, Obama is doing the right thing, and I am totally surprised that McCain didn't sign onto this. But then, John McCain doesn't walk the walk — and just barely talks the talk — and most of the talk is of the wrong kind.

NotFallingInLine.org   August 4th, 2008 3:06 pm ET

Obama saw some poll numbers and knew it was time to pander… he's already shown that he doesn't care about wounded soldiers, and this act of obvious pandering won't change this fact that we already know about him from what little record of him that we have.

Of course, some of his leading detractors among Democrats don't have a record that's much longer or that looks better than his. They don't have a record of treating their followers with any more respect than he does.

Darragh Murphy, the treasurer of PUMA PAC, is no better than Barack Obama.

But I thought that all Democrats "hate the troops"? Ridiculous of course… They're the party that is actually doing the most to help them right now after the Bush Adminstration/McCain/the Neo-Cons almost destroyed our armed forces for their own egos.

Tom   August 4th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

Having had a father who surrered from TBI from WW-2, I'm very pleased to see any legislative leaders addressing this issue. Sen. Obama's support of such a move clearly demonstrates the kind of judgement that is otherwise lacking in too many of our elected officials. Why is it that we can spend so many billions on weapon systems that don't provide us (OR THE TROOPS) any real security, while over looking what should be basic health care security for those who may have to put thier life on the line. This is and old story in need of a good ending.

Tim   August 4th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Lisa,

If you read this, please change Joe LIEberman's party affiliation in this story. He's not a Democrat. The Democrats in CT voted him out of the party.

Franky   August 4th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

"As speculation over the number two slot rises, presidential candidate Barack Obama and potential v.p. contender Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana joined forces Monday, signing a letter with eight other senators that urges Defense Secretary Robert Gates to increase medical coverage and care for Iraq war veterans left with serious brain injuries."

How Ironic!! About an hour or so, me and my mom were talking about our troops! And quite frankly, we were talking about this!! That's the truth…

Obama 08 - rocking it baby   August 4th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Now … McCain and camp was hard on Obama for not visiting the troops abroad … (even though the Pentagon and making the visit look too political was the real reason Obama didn't make the visit) has not sign or even came up with any real resolutions to support the troops…. this goes back to the fact that McCain is out of touch… this is a good thing that Obama and others are doing … If McCain really cared about our troops he would be signing the letter along with the rest of the Senators.

The truth is John McCain has repeatedly voted against supporting veterans.

McCain Voted Against $19 Billion for Military Hospitals. In February 2006, McCain voted against an amendment that would have provided for at least $19 billion for military health facilities, paid for by eliminating tax cuts for the wealthiest earners.
*Senate Amendment 2735, Amendment failed.

McCain Voted Against Legislation to Provide $2.8 Billion For Medical Care for Veterans. McCain voted against a 2006 Democratic amendment that would have provided $2.8 billion to increase veterans’ medical care.
*Senate Amendment 149, Amendment failed.

McCain Voted Against Establishing $1 Billion Trust Fund to Provide Improvements to Military and Veterans’ Health Facilities. McCain voted against an Amendment to establish a $1 billion trust fund to provide improvements to health facilities that treat veterans and military personnel to lapse on December 31, 2006.
*Senate Amendment 2735

McCain voted Against Adding $1.5 billion to Veterans’ Medical Services in 2007 Budget by Closing Corporate Tax Loopholes. McCain voted against an Amendment offered by Democrats to increase medical services funding to veterans by $1.5 billion in 2007.
*Senate Amendment 3007

McCain Voted Against Mandatory Funding of $6.9 Billion in 2007 Budget and $104 Billion Over Five Years for Veterans' Health Care.
McCain voted against a Democratic amendment to provide a mandatory stream of funding of $6.9 billion in Fiscal Year 2007 and $104 billion over five years for veterans' health care.
Senate Amendment 3141

September 2007: McCain voted against the Webb amendment calling for adequate troop rest between deployments
thats MCsames idea of helping the veterans!!!!

Obama's Energy speech was right on the mark. McCain needs to follow Obama's lead and get on board.

I'm looking forward to the Obama tax cuts. They are much bigger than McCain's and we need tax relief for the bottom 90% of income earners.

Anonymous   August 4th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

Happy Birthday Obama, and keep on fighting. They can not push you and your entire familly down any further.

Anyone considering voting for John McCain should really take a look at how he is running his campaign. Full of lies, hateful comments, low blows, and when our nation is still hurting, sarchastic comments. Just think, he will run the country the same way. Just like G. W. Bush did. And look at whre you are at today.

Keep fighting Obama, for the American people.

Chuck, Montgomery, AL   August 4th, 2008 3:00 pm ET

I wish CNN journalists would do some research before they attack Obama or continue to play sound bites from McCan that attack Obama.

According to another news agency the following:

"But Obama's metaphor — "He doesn't look like all those other presidents on the dollar bills" — wasn't random; it was a reference.

A McCain ad from 27 June — more than a month before Obama's remark — suggested that the very idea of Barack Obama's face — i.e., the face of a black man — on the Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, and the $100 bill was absurd."

Can we just get some truth from someone – PLEASE?

Paris   August 4th, 2008 2:59 pm ET

Another publicity stunt by Obama.

It is sad and unacceptable when politicians use our troops.

Upon Further Review   August 4th, 2008 2:58 pm ET

Obama backs our injured troops as well as those in combat. Draft dodgers like Rush Limbaugh, the dropout, made his fortune as a bottom feeder, pretending to support the troops.

Keep up the good work Obama while McSame(MrBurns) plat games with Mitt and the boys.
Hey Mitt, Obama doesn't think that he is the Messiah but your leader Joseph Smith did. He was a true racist and you live by his every word. Jesus is the way the truth and the life. You my friend are a follower of the dark side. Joseph Smith was the dishonest one if you ask me and those that follow him and his teachings are going to be cast into the FIRE. That is what the Holy Bible says. The only way to God is through the Son and Joseph Smith is not him and has never seen him or met him.
So be careful when you call another the Messiah.

Now, that's what we call leadership. OBAMA is offering real solutions while all mcCain and his cronies can come up with are childish attacts that are baseless. anyone can see how desperate the McCain camp is getting that is why they are resorting to trying to tear down the hopeful and high minded Obama. the American people are not stupid not to realise this and too many of the are really hurting. They need real help and that is what OBAMA is offering, and that is why has support in traditionally red states besides the blue states. He is winning in November regardless of what they say.

Silvia in Boca Raton FL   August 4th, 2008 2:57 pm ET

While McCain is having fun with his campaign mocking Obama for everything that he says and does, and for everything that he does not say and he does not do, here we have Obama supporting our troops offering solutions. Will McCain dare to go this far and make fun of the troops?

I really resent those calling Obama arrogant. I want a President that has confidence and can hold his own with world leaders. Bush can't do that and its been embarressing at times. If Obama had only had a few hundred people in Berlin, you guys would have called him a loser. Obama presents himself as a leader should and to bash him because of this is shamefull and makes you guys seem arrogant. Obama deserves our praise and respect. Win or lose, everyday Obama is working to make life better for us all. A thank you is over due!!!

CNN, this morning I commented on how much coverage you give Obama…and guess what. YOU ARE DOING IT AGAIN.

Where is Barr? and all the rest of them?

Come on, report the news….

He is proving more and more each day to be the one with the sound ideas and knowledge to put our country back together. I haven't heard one innovative idea from McSame's camp in the last two weeks..he's too busy attacking Obama and Obama is fighting back by creating all these wonderful plans. Well McSame..time is a ticking and you're wasting it everyday you concentrate on Obama.

Hell NO! These Clinton loyalist can't get this out of there head. I equate Obama not being way ahead in these polls, is because I suspect the people polled are older. Clinton.. who? No way!

Every time I turn on t.v. I hear that Senator O is putting together this and meeting with this group and that group; going here and there. Sort of reminds me of someone preparing to make a move. Then you have Senator Mc who is going along, status quo, not meeting, at least publicly, with anyone one; doing NOTHING. The feeling I get is if by some horrible mistake (stealing the election, again) he becomes Commander In Chief, he plans to walk into the White House and leave things as is. There doesn't seem to be any preparation for a transition.

Obamacrat   August 4th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

I wish they would do something about their own brain injury. It would be nice if he really meant it, but this is just more political posturing. He wouldn't even see the troops in Germany when there was no photo-op. Pandering, plain and simple, but at least the vets may get some benefit from it.

Charlie   August 4th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

O get off your high horse please Rich….it would be nice if for once Americans used their heads when making arguments instead of spewing out lines and other propaganda provided by Obama and McCain's staff. Our vets are treated shamelessly. We should not have to wait for Obama to help them as we should have been doing it all along. If only we would treat our soldiers and their families as well as the 9/11 surviving families were treated. How did we get such a priority list?

Marge Hibbing Mn   August 4th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

One thing for sure Bayh isn't going to help obama's faltering campaign. If he so hot, why isn't he way way ahead of McCain. If he doesn't even ask Hillary he is going to fall even further. Off the map I hope.

This person should never even have been in the campaign and with his flip flops his arrogrant way and his stumbles is now showing it.

jane   August 4th, 2008 2:51 pm ET

I knew Obama wouldn't pick Hillary Clinton as vise president. He just used her to get more votes for himself. Hillary got "charmed" by Barack so she blurted out something like "If you voted for Hillary, you should vote for Barack Obama". But Barack never wanted her as vp.

i am a vet 1963-65 and say it about time. i cannot believe that our soldiers have gone through the lack of care they have—-THEY SHOULD GET THE BEST IN THE WORLD. we should have every city with X amount of doctors who do the work and put them first—bill the government for 1/2 their fee and give the doctors tax breaks. IT MAKES ME SICK TO MY STOMACH THINKING ABOUT A VET NOT BEING TREATED LIKE WE WOULD THE PRESIDENT OF THE U.S.

karen-phoenix   August 4th, 2008 2:50 pm ET

McCain has had 30 years to "fix" things in Washington. Where was he all this time?!!! McCain's experience "STINKS"! Our only hope of survival is Obama. McCain is just more of the same old, same old!!
Obama cares sooooo much more than McCain ever will. Obama is a "real" person who has worked and struggled. McCain lives off a rich beer queen! McCain has 8 houses! How can he ever relate. And don't forget the Keating 5! He should have gone to jail. Judgement? Obama far outleads McCain in judgement!!! And I'm a 50 year republican who is sooo ashamed of the rep. party!

larry wi   August 4th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Obama is really supporting our troops, yeah, as long as he doesn't have to stand next to them. Do you think this is his idea, even as lame as it is, it's not his, He isn't smart enough to address an issue such as this. obama should be focusing on all combat Veterans injuries, and not just the one's from Iraq, this just goes to show you just how narrow he is.

Lyn   August 4th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Joe Lieberman isn't a Democrat.

Lynn in NM   August 4th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Sorry. The time to support the troops is not only in an election year. He couldn't be bothered to speak to the troops, or meet with them, if the cameras weren't there. The military is wise enough to see through "speaking out of both sides of the mouth."

Michele, Oregon   August 4th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Good for Obama et al!

Meanwhile at a town hall in Dover, NH, the week of July 25, Senator McCain said we should ration care for veterans, by directing the VA to focus on those veterans who sustained injuries as a "direct result of combat."
Veterans from 18 states sent a letter to McCain stating that this would be a retreat from a promise we've made to veterans ever since 1930 – that no matter how or when they received service-connected injuries, they would receive timely and quality care.

Adding to the list of McCain's "care" for Vets……

Obama '08!

Straightopiniontalk2008   August 4th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

Here a good and practical way to address the issues a facing service men and women. That is LEADERSHIP! The only thing McCain can offer is attack Obama.
For those of you who think that McCain shares your views, feels your pains, etc. I have just one simple question: Have you ever in your life time owned a shoe that you paid $530 (five hundred thirty dollar) to purchase? If the answer is: yes, then congratulations McCain is your MAN!
Do you know why McCain has visited Iraq so many times?
It is not because he is very much interested in the progress of the war. It is to ensure that no commander makes the mistake in putt his son at the war front! That is how Elites do, they brag that they have sent a son or daughter to war but they make sure that they are never in the harms way, by securing a base posting for them why the innocent poor people's children fight patriotically and courageously and die. Guess what their sons and daughter will eventually come back home and get the glories of fighting those wars! The poor will in the best case get the medals and tomb stones to watch! DO NOT BE FOOLED AGAIN! McCain is not one of you! Did you see any Bush among the fallen pictures

EA   August 4th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

More proof that Obama is more in tune with a wide variety of the real issues that affect all Americans. I have always respected Sen. McCain from his 2000/2004 bids and thought now here's a real politician. But what I've seen from him this time around truly turns me off. I hope and pray that the American public will look past their pre-conceived notions of Obama and right the ship with new leadership. It can't get any worse that what we have seen over the past 7 years.

David   August 4th, 2008 2:49 pm ET

McCain is so old, he's probably forgotten that he was once a seriously injured POW. He gives that impression. He wouldn't know if we did not remind him. But, then, it's gotta be a GOP thing. These soldiers were a cheap way to ensure Halliburton et al access to oil (Boy, we blew that one, didn't we, Dick?). The Military Industrial Complex that Eisenhower warned us about is now in control!

TJ Johnson   August 4th, 2008 2:48 pm ET

Why just Iraq vets? We have had many other wars where our boys suffered greatly with the same type wounds. Why aren't they all equally treated? Obama is just doing this for votes, but won't get mine no matter what.

I figure Wesley Clarke was right. People may not have wanted to hear it but it is true. Being shot down in war doesn't automatically qualify you to be president of the United States. I don't think that is demeaning to McCain's military service at all. Its just a fact. My dad was in Vietnam. He got shot at. Would you all vote for him if he were to run?

IDIOTS FOR McCain!!!
People who are voting for McCain need emotional and mental health check up. Just see how this man has conducted himself for the last few weeks. I thought wisdom comes with age but McCain is a failure case. If you want an insight on how the McCain years will be, you are just living it, only worse terrible economic situation and no health care!
Imagine this man whining about Obama's trip overseas with no orignal thought in that joke he calls a a campaign.
Obama in Germany d/4 go to a sussage house and then whin about feeling left out.
All of a sudden you making an AD about Obama being a celebrity and commiting blasphery by comparing him to Moses of the bible.

On a day when Senator McCain showed his ignorance of science in demeaning Senator Obama's reference to inflated tires promoting better gas mileage, it is refreshing to see Senator Obama staying on point with regards to solutions for our country. Someone ought tell Senator McCain that there is more to taking care of our troops than just wearing a Navy cap. Perhaps Senator McCain might take a break from his childish banter to remember that he is still a paid Senator.

Barack Obama needs to select senator Chuck Hagel as his VP running mate. Crossing partisan lines is essential to move government forward in a meaningful way, especially as a champion of change. while not all of Mr. Hagel's viewpoints are in agreeement with Mr. Obama's or mine–particularly on abortion–he is not an ideologue and it is imperative that topics such as abortion not continue with the kind of polarizing views that so far has dominated the 'discussion.'

i urge Obama to make Chuck Hagel his vice presidential choice.

Everyone has to understand, McCain this election was IN HIS POCKET, he felt as a SHELLSHOCK POW, the President position was HIS FOR THE TAKING, he felt he deserved it!

But here comes this Obama guy that EVERYONE is CRAZY about, (and that's because he's saying the things AMERICAN'S want to hear), we need a change. The housing market is in the pits, our children are dying unnecessarily, and everyone is losing their jobs! He has made it quite clear that his own brain is way beyond rehabilitaion just like his supposed honor!

Danny from OH   August 4th, 2008 2:44 pm ET

McCain's only words are "The Surge is Working and We Are Winning the War" but he does nothing for the troops. He even voted against the GI bill so this tells who has the troops at heart. All that he knows is dirty politics.
God Bless you Barack.

This is great news-no matter who is leading the effort.

TBI's are all too often ignored-as they most times have no-apparent physical manifestation-the injury is in the body-not outside the body–

TBI's can last a lifetime-with moderate to severe effects-that compromise the lifestyle of the effected person–

Good news for our brave men and women of the military—

Way to Go Senator Obama. At least one of the two candidates for the President of the United States of America is out doing some productive work with a vision. While our troops are out fighting Bush and McBush's bully war, McBush is over here issuing out tire gages with Obama's name on it. I guess it is just another moment to insert some humor in the presidential campaign (yeah right). Bullies that is what the Republican is and what they have single handedly given America the reputation of being. I can't wait to November. Obama '08. I am ashamed for the GOP: Grand Ole Poopsters.

Lesley   August 4th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

McCain has consistently voted against bills that included benefits for GIs. I think that's huge. He's touting his military record and does not even support the troops where it counts most, with votes that can improve their lives! Maybe he missed the news accounts of the difficulties they have to overcome just to get treatment at VA hospitals and the horrid conditions of some of the facilities. He is truly the empty suit here. And he doesn't even give pretty speeches!

It is obvious to me that Obama keeps throwing ' popular' ideas out there every time you turn around. Don't try to infer that McCain would not be good to our troops; that is ridiculous.
Also, if you value a good education for your children, you should vote for McCain because of the voucher system. The 'dumbing down' of our school system to make teachers look good (when SOME aren't) is totally unfair to all, especially those who cannot afford private schools.
Notice in the above sentence, I said 'some', as I know there are many good teachers.

Obama has a brain injury because he keeps forgeting what his stances are.

With that said a friend of mine just told me this morning that his son inlaw who served in Irag committed suicide this past weekened after an argument with the wife. This is after he used his wife's head to creat a hole on the wall eight days after giving birth. It's not only TBI that has infested these vets. It's also drug abuse and suicide. Let their health services include mental health services as a whole.

Independent_me   August 4th, 2008 2:35 pm ET

As the parent of two military sons I appreciate what Obama is doing for military families. God knows that the Republicans talked a good talk as far as the military is concerned – but we all know now how empty and shallow their patriotism is! They failed our sons and daughters while feeding us patriotic propaganda!

I believe that our sons and daughters who are serving so valiantly will be treated with much more respect by Obama when he is elected President.

While I honor McCain's service, I do not respect him for betraying his own principles and adopting those of one of the most hate filled and divisive government that the US had had to endure in modern times. I have been more and more saddened, ashamed and shocked at how McCain is morphing into a Carl Rove/George Bush clone!

Now we know what's wrong with McCain and why he's playing such goofy games with his advertisements for President: TBI

NC Man   August 4th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

But Obama what didn't you go see the troops????

INSANE IN THE MCCAIN   August 4th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

I am still waiting for McCain to offer one solution for any of americas problems!

Justin in CA   August 4th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

When it comes to supporting our troops, McCain is the one who is just talk.

Abby   August 4th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Senator Obama, continue this honorable path and the rest will fall into place. Honor our troops.

OBAMA 08

WHO CARES ABOUT OBAMA AND SEN. BAYH. THEY WILL NOT GET MY VOTE.

Rich in Seattle   August 4th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

So while McCain attacks Obama and doesn't seem to offer anything of his own as to what he would do as President. Obama is out there really supporting our troops by doing right by them. For being a Vet, McCain sure doesn't go out of his way to put his money where his mouth is when it comes to these issues.

It's obvious who the country needs as our next President. Obama 08!
