A Cheney spokesperson said no decision has been made on the convention.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Will Vice President Cheney be a no-show at the Republican convention in Minnesota?

Republican officials say yes, citing a desire by Sen. John McCain's campaign to turn the page on the Bush-Cheney years. One GOP official told CNN there's a "mutual understanding" between Cheney's office and the McCain camp that he is "unlikely" to attend the convention.

A second Republican official said there are still "talks going on" between Cheney's office and the McCain camp and both sides are "still trying to work it out."

The conservative American Spectator first reported Monday Cheney, who has low national approval ratings but is still popular among conservatives, is not expected to attend the convention.

McCain spokesman Brian Rogers side-stepped a question about whether the Senator has invited Cheney, saying the campaign has "not announced the speakers or any details" about the convention at this point.

Cheney spokeswoman Megan Mitchell also told CNN the details for the convention are still in flux. "His schedule for next week has not even been set-up," Mitchell said, suggesting there has been no final decision on the convention.

Obama = Kerry = Kennedy   August 5th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

A vote for Obama is a vote for john Kerry and Ted kennedy as they will conbtrol O'blah blah in office. Be afraid. Be very afraid of electing Obama as he represents the most liberal candidate and Dem this country will ever see .... and add to that scary thought the fact that he is totally inexperienced and will be "managed" by the Dem leadership.

If there were any justice in this world both Cheney and Bush would watch the GOP convention on television - in prison, serving sentences for crimes against humanity.

Watcher   August 5th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Cheney, one of the greatest heroes of American history, must laugh hearing about the numbskull cowards who write homosexualist attacks on his good character from the web site of one of the premier communist smear outfits in history, run by China to help cover up for the mafia enterprise called the "Democratic" National Committee, even though a majority of its convention delegates are not elected at all, and over 60% are illegal and unconstitutional government employee union members from the NEA and AFT.

While Clinton-Gore, genocidal homosexualist traitors against the United States, got away with literally murdering several hundred Americans to take the heat off the most unpopular unelected president in American history whose vote fraud set a world record in 1996, but whose record was exceeded in 2000 by Gore but he STILL couldn't steal the election he was so unpopular with Americans, the time will come when their crimes are met with the justice they are due. As will their fluffer followers.

Larry of Boston   August 5th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

Last night in Boston Senator Kerry told a crowd of Obamabot supporters that McCain was "dangerous" to the country for his voting record on North Korea, Afghanistan, and Iraq. What Kerry failed to tell the crowd was that McCain's voting record and that of Kerry, Kennedy, and Barach O blah-blah are all indential -- IN the past we the american public has been afraid of tax and spend liberals like Kerry Kennedy and Obama. Now have have to add "honesty" as a shortcoming to the Dems. If this country wants some one experienced and who is "in the middle" and works both sides of the aisle – then McCain is the only candidate that can be trusted to lead this country at this time.

Of course Cheney will not show up.... I can not blame him though.... he should be shamed. He would like to take the money and run.... and if he stays out of sight he will be out of mind.... as he thinks Americans have a small attention span.... NOT McCain = Bush... hiding Bush and Cheney does not change the fact that he (McCain) supported them 95% of the time via his voting record.... these out of touch rich boys do not know the plight of the average American... they couldn't phantom....

Independent-Latina-for-OBAMA   August 5th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Well ...........DUH. Even his own party realizes what a creep Cheney is. And they recognize the damage Bush/Cheney have done to the GOP.

In 2000, I voted for Bush/Cheney, I have lived to regret it! In all my life that is my biggest regret!

I can NOT believe that anyone would vote for the GOP again! Are people insane????????

LET'S SEE, THANKS TO BUSH/CHENEY:

WE HAVE CLOSE TO $10 TRILLION IN DEBT

OVER 360 THOUSAND AMERICANS HAVE LOST THEIR JOBS

WE HAVE LOST 4100 PRECIOUS LIVES IN IRAQ! NOT TO MENTION THE CIVILIAN DEATHS! AND THOSE TROOPS OVER 30 THOUSAND MAIMED OR SUICIDAL!

WE HAVE A DEFICIT OF $490 BILLION FOR 2009........ AND ANOTHER $80 BILLION IS NEEDED FOR IRAQ!

OUR PEOPLE, THE AVERAGE AMERICAN, CAN BARELY MAKE ENDS MEET........BUT MCCAIN DOES NOT WANT TO TAX BIG OIL!

HAVEN'T WE HAD ENOUGH???????????????????? DO WE REALLY WANT MORE OF THE SAME........IF SO VOTE MCCAIN!

SAD.

Yeah, but Bush and McCain (Bush/Cheney's lap dog) will be there, as all of the ususal Republican suspects – Romney, Lieberman, Pawlenty, Portman and the Indian guy from Louisiana. The McCain campaign really, really does believe it when Bush/Cheney tells them that the American people are really "stupid." Give me a break. So the Republicans are going to put one of their star players on the "injured" list and send Cheney to his "undisclosed location" to watch the convention on tv. They are all Republicans. They are all on the same team. They all embrace the same failed Bush policies. They all court big oil companies, million-dollar-a-year CEO's and CFO's and bank presidents. They all share the same attitude, "take more from the poor and give more to the rich." They didn't fool me in 2000. They didn't fool me in 2004. And, they certainly won't fool me this year. Jay Palmquist   August 5th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

It's a joke that VP Cheney would not be at the convention. If that were to happen of course, for the reason(s) mentioned, then McCain isn't ready for prime time, (which is debatable anyway) and just confirms that he'll throw "any" conservative under the bus, if it's convenient or opportunistic. It's too bad, Republicans had to settle for this old, white cook who lives out early 1970's-style Democrat politics and positions. Unfortunately, too, he doesn't adhere to anything remotely conservative, except defense, and energy production. Other than that, he's thrown everything and everyone else under the bus...including (possibly?) Richard Cheney. Shameful if true.

Sherri   August 5th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Peter (CA)   August 5th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

If he did nothing wrong, why won't he release the records of his "meetings" with the oil company execs? What does he have to hide?

Why did he develop his own seal to term documents that are public as "top secret"? What is he hiding?

Is he evil? Depends on your definition of evil. He is the architect of war, he has shown his disdain for the average American over and over, and he his mission has been to make life better for his friends over the last 8 yrs.

I just hope karma takes care of him.

to Jocelyn – I agree that some people's words are very hateful and cruel and they should be ashamed of their childish behavior. BUT, if you really think that Cheney is "just a man" and it is "just politics", then you are very naive. Cheney is in a position that not only affects every American's life, but everyone's life worldwide. This administration is the most corrupt, dishonest and incompetent administration in our history. And if anyone should be ashamed of their choices and behavior it should be him and Bush, and their mothers should be absolutely horrified. To think that anyone should have respect for him, or Bush, just because they are President and Vice-President is just wrong. The office of President and Vice President deserves our respect, but if the people who are in those offices spit on the American people and all those that built this country, they deserve no respect. The Bush administration actions have been criminal. Please don't be blinded by your respect for the office.

Watch out now! That's all way too radical! Run scared for the hills! Obama and Pelosi want to educate children, Run! They want everyone to have a fair shot at making something of themselves, Run! They want people to not be sick, Run! We won't find out, Connie. Because Obama is not Marxist. These conservative scare tactics are quite pathetic. Obama is not even a socialist. Did you ever look up the definitions for these political questions? Sometimes I believe some conservatives are ignorant enough to believe that anything left from their own position must be communist.

If you look up Obama's voting record, he is a moderate liberal. On some issues he's even more conservative than Hillary Clinton, i.e. his health care plan.

All of you have good points. What I would like to add...the crimes that Cheney and the rest of his party committed have been swept under the rug. How about shooting someone in the face after drinking? You go out and do that and see what happens to you. There is also the "T" word. The crimes that have put our country where we are today. You see it doesn't matter what party you are affiliated with... right is right and wrong is wrong. There are only two reason many people will not vote for Obama. It has nothing to do with the condition of America or even their personal condition. Cheney is brilliant and any other flating words...because he can do whatever he wants to do, whenever he wants to do it and almost to anyone but in saying this doesn't it make him dangerous. Without law and order, rules and regulations we are just back to the "wild, wild west"

Couple of facts...Cheney was Sec. of Defense under King George the First. He presided over the initial invasion of Iraq in the '90's. He then was CEO of Haliburton, who is now raking in billion$ in military contract money for the second invasion of Iraq. He was selected to be VP of King George the Junior back in 2000, well before 9/11...so bare with me for a second...what if, and I mean what if....the second invasion of Iraq was already a fore-gone conclusion back in 2000? Cheney would be perfect to oversee it...all that was needed was an event to push the national mood towards acquiescing to it...see where I'm going? If this is true...then 9/11 was already a planned event back in 2000. Draw your own conclusions...

A good way to judge the character of politicians? Look at their charitable contributions in released tax records. Cheneys' and Bushes' returns show they've always been incredibly generous–even in the years before they ran for national office. Gore released records that showed he'd contributed a paltry few HUNDRED dollars on a millionaire's income. Only after Obama started to run for national office did his records show much generosity, and then who did the Obamas designate as one of their prime beneficiaries? The hateful Rev. Wright and his church.

They're actually quite different if you'd bother to read something other than the dailykos.

They are alike in many ways too...it just so happens that McCain's adopted the policies that are right. He's doing everything he can to keep this country from falling into a Marxist ideology.

Obama is the poster child of socialism.. don't be confused by his flip flops and refinements to attempt to grab votes from the independents.

I agree that Cheney is one of the most brilliant men in government. He is an articulate and well-spoken orator and it is a shame he was not allowed to lead as he could have. All those who keep harranging on Halliburton and "blood money" don't have a clue. We need more leaders of his ability on both sides of the aisle. It's really too bad that the voice of the people continues to elect government officials at all levels that have such a twisted view of what the role of government is and should be in our lives.

Tim - Austin TX   August 5th, 2008 11:49 am ET

I can't see what the problem is with Cheney. You would have to be a certified moron if you don't link McCain's policies with all of the Bush/Cheney policies.

The electoral process should be quite easy for Americans as their choice is quite clear either you like the way the past 8 years has improved your lives and your country so you will vote for McCain or you dislike what has happened over the past 8 years and will elect Obama.

All the rest of the political rhetoric is of no consequence as it is only meant to confuse the gullible ones like those who actually think Iraq was responsible for 9/11.

Obamalism   August 5th, 2008 11:45 am ET

Walid in Gainesville – I think it's recognized by the majority of people that Obama will have the disadvantage in a debate.

The biggest reason is that it will be a two person debate instead of the 5-8 persons in a primary. When you spout out a canned response to a question the chances of you getting called out on it are much greater. A nasty comment by one candidate will not be there to take the media's attention away from a side-stepped question.

Oh, and teleprompters and pre-written speeches don't help in debates.

In response to Patricia's comment of pathetic sheep - if any group are pathetic sheep, it is the repuglicans, who have blindly followed Bush and Cheney though the past 7 years of raping the American people and destroying relations throughout the world. Now Bush will talk to N. Korea and send people to talk with Iran only because they are the only ones who will talk to him. The democratic countries want nothing to do with him. As long as someone spouts self-righteous indignations, the sheepish republicans will follow and do their dirty deeds in secret.

The real America   August 5th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Had Dick Cheney wanted to continue to make millions he would have stayed as CEO of Halliburton. He is a great American and history will prove that both he and President Bush have made great personal sacrafices to keep American safe. I wish we conservatives could really show how much we appreciate them between now and January '09. We will see the great conservatve movement come out in November. CNN and the other Liberal outlets will see how much influnce they really have.

Virginia   August 5th, 2008 11:39 am ET

This isn't going to be a Marxist government. It will be a whole lot better than the corruption we have put up with from Bush and Co. Another thing: I believe that the reason Bush is pushing for offshore drilling is because his thugs back in Texas, Gonzo, Rove and some of the other crooks are going into the oil bidness with him as soon as he is out of office and the new offshore drilling is set. Wait and see.

Richard, St. Paul, MN   August 5th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Bob from Pittsburgh   August 5th, 2008 11:36 am ET

Conservative you are a true moron..

Regan left this country with a whopping 3.5 trillion dollar debt (when he got into office the debt was 600 billions) Regan sold high tech arms to Iran with the help of Oliver North, Invade a tine Island of 30 x 30 miles because he claimed it was a danger to the US (is like a 5 year old is treat to a 40 year old)

That was your great Regan president. He was lucky Gorbachev was a smart and able politician..

"R" in Republican stands for RECESSION.

And Cheney is the smartest crook this land has ever seen, getting together with the big oil man on a secret meeting to plan the energy policy for the Bush administration has been the biggest scam, and as you can see we are ripping the results, $4:00 / gallon gasoline. And the biggest profits for Exxon, Halliburton KPR etc..

Yes conservative you are a smart person…

Stop the madness, Cheney a great public servant????? Can you say "No bib contracts for Haliburton"? And how about the "closed" door meeting with the oil execs? Keep throwing around Marxist & socialist fear terms but don't speak about how several in power only advocate for "their own" . Tell me is is a bad thing to make sure that we have an educated public in America? Is it a bad thing to make sure that people have a roof over their heads? Is is a bad thing to make sure that the children of our country are kept safe? Get real people, this is what is wrong with our country, it is not black or white it is financial warfair and the people that weren't fortunate enough to have money are struggling more than ever.

VP Dick Cheney has been an excellent VP and a patriot. The liberals who act only on emotion cannot understand the thinking of people who act based on reason and logic. Liberals are so full of hate that all they can do is spew filth. McCain should invite Cheney to the convention.

NotFallingInLine.org   August 5th, 2008 11:27 am ET

Cheney should be infinitely ashamed of himself.

DARRAGH MURPHY, the ineffective, if not petty and apparently corrupt treasurer of PUMA PAC, should be ashamed of herself, too…

Members of PUMA PAC: Write Darragh Murphy, demand a refund, and give your money to help pay down Hillary's campaign debt, or to groups like The Denver Group or WomenCount PAC, which have already demonstrated in a shorter amount of time that they will use the money immediately to place ads in newspapers.

It is clear the McCain doesn't want to be seen with the current powers, even though they support the same party. It is very obvious that the current party in office is the reason for so many problems of today. We are at the point where if we don't get our country together, we won't be a leader in the new world power as we have been in the past.

I respect both nominees, but I can't understand how someone could back McCain after all the sh!t that comes with him. He is so out of touch with America and the world as a whole. His dream to become President is just that, A Dream. It is something him and his wife have long dreamed about and they are getting old. This is his last opportunity to sieze that moment. So to the Obama camp I say "Watch Your Back" cause the Insane camp will pull all types of dirty tricks to get into office. Mark my words, they won't fall easily.

"Cheney, who has low national approval ratings but is still popular among conservatives, is not expected to attend the convention."

The prospect that a person can have low approval ratings, while being popular among conservatives, is encouraging...it doesn't say much to the strength in the remaining conservative "base". True American Conservatism is dead, this Administration killed it. Maybe they weren't so bad after all...

If the GOP were honest, they would hang a banner with Cheney's face behind the stage. He is who they are...and his unique brand of evil is what voters will soundly reject in November.

Steve, New York, New York   August 5th, 2008 11:10 am ET

Cheney not showing up? What a shame.

He and Dubya are too busy, trying to provoke the next war –

1) the moronic "Axis of Evil" speech probably frightened Iranians into electing a right-wing freak-o of their own (pushing that country's moderates out of power).
2) missile defense system plans (OF COURSE) have nothing to do with Putin taking a more bellicose tone towards the USA.
3) let's not even talk about Cheney's ridiculous nonsense, that Saddam was ready to attack U.S. soil with unmanned drones.

Wow, maybe if we had not followed the advice of Cheney, the idiotic Wolfowitz, others, Iran, the budget, etc. might have been far more manageable.

Tom, Atlanta, GA   August 5th, 2008 11:10 am ET

I for one fail to understand any great/bad effect on McCain if Bush or Cheney speak at the convention. Republications need to stop catering to the fears of the democrat weasles that are weak citizens at best and stand for something instead of changing their position in favor of the direction the wind is blowing today. Where are the candidates of old that had the do-dads to stand for something. I hope Cheny and Bush both speak and get the republican base off it't butt.

Watching Dick Cheney on TV or even watching his photo just boils/irritates me. At work If I make any mistake or miss a deadline or spend little extra money of my own, I feel guilty. But Dick being responsible for so many lies, corruption, arrogance, manipulating CIA about Iraq war, deaths of so many brave American soldieries, does he even feel guilt? He behaves as if he's not responsible for anything and no accountability. In my opinion he's a criminal and needs to be put in JAIL for rest of his life.

VP Dick Cheney will miss the GOP convnetion because he will be at Halliburton Headquarters picking up his dividend check.

Don't think for a minute that he's not going to get "comp'd" for his service to the meteoric rise of this company.

Chris, American in London   August 5th, 2008 10:44 am ET

Unbelievable. Cheney, along with Rove, has been manipulating this government and his puppet Bush for years, and now he's not going to make an appearance at the Convention because McCain wants to signify a break with the Bush-Cheney years? A day late and a dollar short, aren't you McCain? Where were you when you should have been speaking out about these guys during the past 7 1/2 years?

NotFallingInLine.org   August 5th, 2008 10:41 am ET

Cheney should be infinitely ashamed of himself.

Darragh Murphy, the ineffective, if not petty and apparently corrupt treasurer of PUMA PAC, should be ashamed of herself, too... but just a little bit.

It's not so much Cheney the GOP should be worried about. One of Obama's key strategies is to link McCain with Bush (rightly or wrongly I'll let others debate). But it would be bad form, if not unacceptable, for Bush to not attend the convention and hand off to the next candidate. And that too could be spun by the Democratic campaign in Obama's favor. Looks like a bit of a catch-22 to me.

This is no loss as Dick Cheney, along with George Bush, Denny Hastert and Alberto Gonzales corrupted true Republican ideals and made being a member of the GOP a bad thing.

Hopefully the party will recover by 2012.

Cheney/Bush leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Walid in Gainesville FL   August 5th, 2008 10:28 am ET

Of course McCain won't invite Cheney to the convention, he does not want to be seen anywhere near Cheney. The people of this country will get to see how incompetent McCain really is when he sits across from Obama in a nationally televised debate, Obama will make McCain seem like a stuttering parrot.

Another grumpy old white woman for Obama   August 5th, 2008 10:27 am ET

Why should he? He's going to take all the millions he got from Halliburton and bail. Probably to some country where he can't be extradited.

webster208   August 5th, 2008 10:27 am ET

If he has the best interest of the Republican party at heart, Cheney should not attend the convention. And someone needs to tell him to stay home, not to give interviews, and not to go hunting until November. That will be the most patriotic thing he could do at this time. We are all counting on him!

Why aren't charges being filed against this man. Americans with much, much smaller crimes go to jail for long periods of time. The justice system once again fails in America. It's no wonder high officials do what they do. Just a simple smack on the wrist on there are home free, and rich to boot. And you wonder why people in America have no respect for their government or any official.

Donald, Toronto   August 5th, 2008 10:19 am ET

This speaks volume of the negative view that the Republican party gate keepers have of each other when the sitting Vice President of the nation is not even sure if he should be at the paty's pre-general election convention where the next possible president will be officially recognize as the party's presidential nominee. Senator McCain's camp will certainly do harm to his bid if it takes the low road and shun the Vice President. The Vice President should be invited. He was not impeached for any crime.

who would want this man around anyways.

Michael Shea   August 5th, 2008 10:16 am ET

As much as I dislike Vice-President Cheney, by virtue of his office he should be invited to speak at his parties nominating Convention.

This reminds me of the 1972 Democratic Convention that I attended. There were large pictures of all the Democratic Presidents except Lyndon Johnson's. I thought this was wrong. Although the Vietnam War tarnished his Legacy, he was responsible for the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts, Medicare and the War on Poverty.

The other reason I want Cheney on the GOP Convention Agenda is to remind all of us of the role how he has played with the Iraq War.

Rudy NYC   August 5th, 2008 10:16 am ET

I guess they don't want to leave an image in people's minds of how similar the two of them actually appear from a short distance. That would plant the subliminal message that they are the same guy, same ideas, same policies, etc.

As for Dubya showing up or not......It will prove interesting.

JP Bless   August 5th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Smart move. Cheney does not want to remind voters that the Cheney and Bush inspired Iraq was for Haliburton's oil. I am pretty sure more Republicans like Karl Rove, Libby, Ralph Reed, Rumsfeld and possiblly, George Bush would joing Cheney.

The fact that they are ASHAMED of Cheney and FEARFUL of having him at the Convention on the stage with McCain tells it all.

It is disrespectful of Mccain's Campaign to clamour for the non-attendance of the Vice President of the United States and a very senior member of the GOP at the Party's National Convention.

The bad decisions taken by the Bush's Government was not taken unilaterally be Presiden Bush and Vice President Bush. The High echelon of the Party had and still have a say in the direction the Party and by extension, the GOP led Government took and are still taking in these past 7 years.

The President, Vice President, Secretaries, Under-Secretaries, Advisors, Senators (both Federal and State), congressmen, Governors and Mayors are jointly liable for the caricature they have made of the United States of America.

So Dick Cheney should not be made to bear all the brunt. Senator Mccain is also vicariously liable for the mess we are in.

Dick Cheney should attend the Convention because it is his right to do so. He should not allow himself to be hoodwinked into a no-show because Senator Mccain wishes to "turn the page on the Bush-Cheney years".

HE SHOULDN'T ALLOW HIMSELF TO BE TREATED LIKE A LEPER. Not now, not ever.

KATIEC PEKIN, IL   August 5th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Mccain accepts millions from the oil industries but does

'blunders he and the republicans have made.
And some want this man running our country?

Cheney's too busy counting his blood money to attend the convention.

We have two big oil men, Bush/Cheney, in the White House, with Cheney having had all those SECRET energy meetings. It is NOT a coincidence that we have high oil prices and a war in the oil rich Middle East! Use your common sense.

The "axis of evil" is right there in Washington and McCain has been a part of it for the last 26 years! It's time to clean house and throw the bums out!

Cheney is still too busy running the country (into the ground). Tricky Dick (aka Dr. Evil) can't pull himself away from watching his Halliburton stock rise. What a ringing endorsement of the Republican party when the Republican candidate doesn't want the de facto leaders of the party present.

You gotta admit, Dick's strategy for getting rid of entitlements like Medicare and Social Security is a novel one–just make them both so insolvent that we simply can't afford them.

Cheney is unpopular because his policies and his programs failed. Touting himself as a nationalist and patriot, the U.S. is now in the pits economically and we have lost our status in the world. The news had a story about all the British tourists flocking to New York because the dollar is worth nothing and it is so cheap compared to London. They actually felt sorry for us.

I am glad the British are coming to visit New York, but it should not have been under these circumstances. Cheney and Bush should be recorded as one of the worst administrations in history. McCain should absolutely distance himself from them, as far as possible.

REPORTS OF VOTER PURGES IN SWING STATES

In swing-state Colorado, the Republican Secretary of State conducted the biggest purge of voters in history, dumping a fifth of all registrations. Guess their color.

In swing-state Florida, the state is refusing to accept about 85,000 new registrations from voter drives – overwhelming Black voters.

In swing state New Mexico, HALF of the Democrats of Mora, a dirt poor and overwhelmingly Hispanic county, found their registrations disappeared this year, courtesy of a Republican voting contractor.

In swing states Ohio and Nevada, new federal law is knocking out tens of thousands of voters who lost their homes to foreclosure.

CheneyMrBurns   August 5th, 2008 9:20 am ET

Dick Cheney has to be one of the worst vice presidents in history. What has he done besides make billions for Halliburton, as well as numerous other contractors and the oil companies? All overseen by George Bush. I find it impossible to believe this president has not faced impeachment for all of the outright criminal actions his administration has committed. The fact that Cheney never considered a run for president makes his role in the administration all the more obvious: he's there to secure contracts for his political allies. I fault the democratic congress nearly as much as the Bush/Cheney duo for the continuation of their criminal conduct, but in the end I'll be overjoyed when we finally kick the republicans out of office for 8 years and finally have a president (Barack Obama) and congress who can work together.

What if?   August 5th, 2008 9:19 am ET

"mutual understanding" , He may not be at the GOP, but he still will reap rewards as usually. So are we suppose to believe that McBush will continue this so call mutual understanding once he has fooled us with this charade after elected in the White House?PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

Please my fellow voters......let's remember....... the present administration fooled us once, and we let you fool us twice, but we will not be fooled by last minute use of all of these so call concerns about the economy to fool us a third time. Our economy haven't just got this way, it's been headed downward for the last eight years.

WASN"T McBush in a position to help us the 98% people that was struggling while he was in the senate, instead of voting to follow Bush political policies agendas?

Not all of us was fortunate enough to leave our spouses to marry millionaires. Also his explanation for voting for Bush policies so many times tells us what is to come if he is elected as our President. Believe his hype and act as if you don’t see the same politics after stating he wasn’t going to run a negative campaign. Say or think what you want....this Will be a 3rd term for Bush agenda.

I WILLl VOTE for Obama, he hasn't been in the Senate long enough to be whipped into their full negative self serving mold.

Obama

Bud   August 5th, 2008 9:18 am ET

The farther away Cheney [and Bush!] stay from McCain, the more likely people will see McCain as separate from the corrupt Bush Administration. This total separation from Bush is McCain's only hope to move forward in his campaign. Perhaps we'll soon see Mr. Cheney emerge as a star in criminal proceedings against him.

Maybe he invited McCain to go hunting

tom E   August 5th, 2008 9:16 am ET

How about just coming out and denounceing this war mongering, draft avoiding slime. Surely you would gain more votes than you would lose. Simply avoiding him is not enough!

Al, NY NY   August 5th, 2008 9:16 am ET

C'Mon Darth Vader. Go to the convention. We all want to see your evil smirk on the same stage as your heir-apparent. That will seal his fate as a loser

"Regret to say I cannot attend."

– Dick Cheney, Fed Prison ID 73061ttWMD164

MINNESOTA Democrat   August 5th, 2008 9:15 am ET

Cheney won't show because he isn't welcome, and because Mccain is trying to distance himself from the Bush administration. (even though he will likely follow in its footsteps anyways.)

No offense, but Mccain and Cheney are both alike in that they are both too old and out of touch with modern, fast-paced society. I do not trust either. I'm interested to see how the RNC turns out, since Mccain's campaign has been turning into a joke-fest against Obama. I feel most bad for the Americans who actually fall for these ridiculously childish and baseless ads.

S.M   August 5th, 2008 9:14 am ET

It is mighty funny how McCain now wishes to attack Bush and his policies when he has sided with him the majority of the times and now he wants to distance himself from Cheney. Even if he did distance himself from the Vice President; many Americans will not forget that he was their side kick for the eight years that Bush and Cheney have been in office. Maybe he'll distance himself from Paris Hilton's mother and their money.

Billy   August 5th, 2008 9:13 am ET

Rumor has it that he is busy at that time, filming Batman 3 staring as the penguin.

Lucas, Nashville TN   August 5th, 2008 9:13 am ET

Kiss of death.

I say the protesters who attend the RNC should be sure they keep his image attached – use masks, signs, etc. The GOP would not let the stains come off the blue dress for us, we should definitely not allow them to so easily wash the blood away from their own red reputation.

Cheney is an example of what too much GOP power generates.

Disgusted American   August 5th, 2008 9:12 am ET

Too little too late ... McCain spent the last 7 years in a loving embrace with Bush-Cheney Inc. He cannot distance himself in any way; it is too late for that. McCain is Cheney .

Mike Mc   August 5th, 2008 9:11 am ET

Well I have to give McCain credit where credit is due. Why on earth would he want this snake at the Convention anyways?

Thomas, Illinois   August 5th, 2008 9:10 am ET

Rob   August 5th, 2008 9:08 am ET

Guess not all Republicans are totally stupid

Tony   August 5th, 2008 9:08 am ET

ABSOLUTELY, NO QUESTION ABOUT IT, Cheney is the WORST V.P. in the history of this country.

bulldog   August 5th, 2008 9:08 am ET

McCain = Bush and Cheney. Why does he want Cheney there when McCain himself can fill in for him. There is no reason to have two of the same.

Mike in Houston   August 5th, 2008 9:07 am ET

Expect to hear all the usual sophmoric "McBush", "McSame", etc. These individuals generally haven't bothered to look at McCain's record in the Senate (he has one, unlike Obama who only bothered to vote 51% of the time in the 110th Congress).

The only thing that McCain and Bush see eye-to-eye on was the surge (which allowed Obama to go to Iraq without a flack-jacket) and the believe that Americans should be allowed a government that doesn't take away their economic and political liberty.

Obama, Pelosi and Reid are getting ready to socialize the United States and reduce American's standard of living. They will cripple the United States for the greater "global good" under the banner of "global warming" or "improved international relations". I find it ironic that those supporting this movement do so more out of "white guilt" or "europe envy" than any other particular reason.

Tony   August 5th, 2008 9:06 am ET

Who could blame anyone for wanting to distance themselves from Cheney?

Problem for McCain is taht they are two of a kind, so he has NO PLACE TO HIDE!

AL   August 5th, 2008 9:05 am ET

Well, Well, Well, if McCain can have alll the staffers who ran the Bush/Cheney campaign running his, I don't see what's wrong have the chief architect there. You never know, he might be able to tell McClueless where his campaign is deficient.

Then again McCain is only running for their 3rd term in office... it would be too obvious right?

Ian   August 5th, 2008 9:05 am ET

That's just sad.

Rufus from NC   August 5th, 2008 9:03 am ET

Barack Obama should be running ads with pictures of McCain with Bush and Cheney every day. These people are the paid shills of big oil and we'll never break our addiction to fossil fuel as long as they're in power. McCain can joke about Obama's energy plan all he wants, but the plan makes sense in the long term. McCain was never the "maverick" he claimed to be. He moved to the center after he got caught up in the "Keating Five" scandal and he's done little else to distinguish himself from the other "foot soldiers of the Reagan Revolution" as he calls himself. You would have thought that after the Keating scandal he would understand that regulations are necessary to protect the public from greedy banks and oil companies, but apparently McCain hasn't learned much during his 26 years in Washington.

Makes sense to me   August 5th, 2008 9:03 am ET

It doesn't suprise me that Cheney wants to distance himself from McCain. McCain does nothing but attack and make jokes. His campaign is quickly becoming a laughing stock, and I don't know how anyone could vote for the campaign.

Of course he can't attend! He has another multi-million dollar no-bid tax payer funded contract he's working out for Haliburton. To bad we can't all give away a billion dollars of tax payers money to our friends for doing a fraction of the work that it's worth.

Jaren Vitale   August 5th, 2008 9:01 am ET

Where's my comment.? Bottom line: Dick Cheney and George Bush should not attend the convention.

Jeffrey in MI   August 5th, 2008 9:01 am ET

LOL...Cheney is so toxic they don't want him anywhere near that convention...now if only they could figure out how to exclude Dubya...too funny!

rick   August 5th, 2008 9:01 am ET

Bring him on , McCain is backing all his policies

Chris   August 5th, 2008 9:00 am ET

So, Cheney has low approval numbers? he is polling higher than all of Congress, so will both houses of Congress not be invited to attend as well?

Cheney is a straight talker and like him or not is what McCain needs in his badly executed campaign.

Just how easy is McCain going to make Obama's run for the White House?

What if?   August 5th, 2008 8:59 am ET

"mutual understanding" , So are we suppose to believe that McBush will continue this so call mutual understanding once he has fooled us with this charade. The same politics as the republicans used in "2004", uh…….....Please let's not be fooled again, once he is in the White House, he WILL surround himself with the same political people (friends, buddies, good ole boys, especially Bush & Cheney, they already tried to fool us in believing that he was distancing himself from Bush early in his campaign, until he had to bring him to the forefront to raise money for his campaign) from this administration in public instead of behind closed doors. He will feel like our present President, he does not have to explain, answer or listen to ANYONE one he take office. If you question that, then remind yourself of how engaged Bush was when he used religion to sway voters to vote for him. After voted back in the White House, how many times did we hear about religion from the present administration. We forgot that religion is a important part of (some) of our lives, but while they fooled us into worrying about our religion belief, we forgot to worry about the MOST important issue we needed on a daily basis to survive this lousy economy. McBush has not had to worry about being employed, his income for years, his mortgage, voted for war, made millions, married millions. Please my fellow voters let's make sure we vote this time for our needed issues...........jobs, income, healthcare, money to pay our bills, KEEP OUR HOMES and ect...

Let’s remember he has been in the Senate for years and because he wants our votes to be President, now he SEE the LIGHT? Uh………….Different politics this time around McBush…….doesn‘t show…………

LBG   August 5th, 2008 8:57 am ET

This is remarkable. That the incumbent vp, who has been pulling Bush's strings for 8 years, might be missing from the Republican convention is incredibly telling. Maybe he can sit quietly and smile (snear) while GWB speaks and then disappear. I have always detested the man but you'd think that the Republicans would want/expect him to be present. When it comes to Bush and his administration, McCain is like a deer in the headlights. He seems paralyzed (taking on most of GWB's policies while trying to simultaneously distance himself.) I hope the democrats can unite, for a change, and dispense with him once and for all and put him and our country out of it's misery!

CT Sherwin   August 5th, 2008 8:49 am ET

VP Cheney is one of the most qualified and nicest person that has ever served our country, and I do not believe all those polls that say he is unpopular, etc., as I believe the pollsters ask themselves or fellow democrats how they like so-and-so, and go from there, You dems had better get this energy issue or the office of dog catcher in DC will be the only office recaptured in the Fall; this is a great issue for the GOP and they are starting to catch on...I hope so; send Nanci and Harry home and take their peers with them. They are going against the will of the people, and that is bad, really bad.

Jeff, Huntington Beach, CA   August 5th, 2008 8:47 am ET

The mechanics put into place by this evil man is something McCain cannot distance himself from. He is showing that he will be a continuation of the Bush/Cheney reign of terror to our civil rights and well being with their brand of lies, deceit, spin and "greater good" mentality while everybody else is expected to sacrifice. Even McCains wife makes my skin crawl. But seriously...

MMN-Milwaukee WI   August 5th, 2008 8:46 am ET

Uncle Cheney won't come to the quad-annual GOP family reunion? How sad, I was looking forward to pulling his finger. The GOP doesn’t want him there it will be a shining reminder of why the re-thug-licans are hurting. I heard even GOPers who have tough re-elections runs won’t show up either. McCain has been thrown under the bus by the GOP but he fell on the curb instead and that’s why he’s still talking.

Sharon, Minnesota   August 5th, 2008 8:45 am ET

I think Dick Cheney will be busy attending the Star Wars exhibit at the Museum here in the Twin Cities around that time. Look for the fellow in the Darth Vader costume.

M.A. Dashell   August 5th, 2008 8:44 am ET

Dumb and Dumber.....!

Michelle, PA   August 5th, 2008 8:44 am ET

First Congressional candidates are advised not to attend, now Darth Vader will be skipping it. What's next, they'll cancel the whole thing to avoid having two Republicans seen in the same room together at all? What a sad commentary on the state of the Republican party. Richly deserved, but sad.

Patrick Henry, Fort Myers   August 5th, 2008 8:42 am ET

I wonder if he will go back to his old company after being VP. He's managed to grow his defense contracting firm record profits in the past 7 years without even going to the office!! His bonus will be enormous.

They shouldn't even invite Bush to the convention!

Kathy   August 5th, 2008 8:39 am ET

I think McCain should select Cheney as his Vice Presidential choice and appoint Rumsfeld as his Defense Secretary.

Vote Obama

JB   August 5th, 2008 8:37 am ET

I have got to comment on McCain demanding that Congress reconvene:

The majoirty of you crazed Obama fans critiqued, made rude comments, and overall laughed at McCain's proposal.

What is wrong with you people? He is asking that Congress come back and address the energy crisis. The one that you all claim is so awful. How is this a bad thing? He has never asked Congress to reconvene, because the energy problem has never been so bad.

Everyone should be proud of this. Congress does not deserve a 5 WEEK vacation with the country in disarray. I guess you crazed Obamabots don't want a fix for the energy crisis, unless the messiah comes up with it.

I am an Obama voter, FYI. Also, be careful Obama blind fans. Don't question McCain's voting record. Apparently, Obama's no shows number as many if not more than McCain's historically.

JuleS, Chicago   August 5th, 2008 8:36 am ET

Better would be for Cheney to distance himself from America and retire - early - on a remote island, never to be seen or heard from again.

Talk about a reign of terror in Iraq.... if Obama is elected (and if God has any mercy for the USA, he will be), I am certain we will find an appalling number of heretofore unveiled "terrorist acts" against US citizens and the Constitution, committed by Dubbya, Cheney and the rest of the Bishwhacker posse.

Elect McCain and get ready for round 2.

I think it would be a shame not to have Cheny on hand. McCain needs the support of ALL Republican elected official's, whether or not they are on the same page with their politics. In spite of what talk is going on about Cheny he has served this country for many years and has acheived a lot of substatial results. Not having Dick Cheny on board would be like the democratics not having Ted Kennedy on board, and we all know that he is a real jerk, but he would be there.

(for those of you who need clarification: murder; thousands of innocent iraqis since the beggining of his illegal war, rape; the women that work for halliburton but cannot file rape charges even though they were raped, torture; the innocent people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time along with a few of the right people we caught, plunder; no bid contracts from the US, steal; whatever they oil they can get from Iraq, cover up; outing of CIA agent valery plame, killing of the guy related to anthrax but never fully proved and pardoning the convicts like scooter libby)

Has to be tough to be running as a Republican this year, desperately trying to run away from 8 years of abject and total failure by the Republican Party to be capable of even the minimum of responsible governing. Additionally, Republicans this year have to try to convince the electorate that, despite the dismal Republican track record, *these* new Republicans will be somehow different.

Not a fricking chance.

Enrique   August 5th, 2008 8:08 am ET

John McCain can keep Dick Cheney away from the convention but that doesn't change McCain's endorsement of Cheney's diasterous Iraq war and the fact that Cheney pursued a policy that never led to the capture Osama bin Laden.

Angela, Cleveland, OH   August 5th, 2008 8:07 am ET

Between a rock and a hard place. How can the nominee not invite the current vp to speak? If he doesn't attend and speak, it will speak loud and clear that an honorable man like Senator McCain does not want a war criminal to attend and speak in his favor.

If he does not attend, it will show that Senator McCain finds dishonorable men like cheney and his ilk disgusting.

Why has this man not been impeached?

This man has been allowed to get away with scaming lying and god knows what else.

What in the world has happened to our Government when they will not impeach a president for illegal activity and war crimes.

Since Bush and Cheney have gotten away with everything corrupt they have done. Wait till the next President gets in office, we have seen nothing yet.

Whoever the next President will be, he already knows by watching this administration that he can do whatever he wants and get away with anything.

There is going to be hell to pay on Americans.

... yes, but its Cheney's old friend and pal who is heading up McCain's election campaign ... and you were wondering why McCain's run was getting so nasty – after McCain had promised us he would be taking the high road ... he must of forgotten or he's not in control of his own campaign.

You can put Phil Gramm in the closet and Cheney in his undisclosed location and even avoid having your picture taken with Bush – but the truth is out – 95% of the time last year, McCain voted with Bush policies – when he was there to vote ...
