Sen. McCain slammed Sen. Obama at a press conference held in the shadow of a nuclear energy plant.
Sen. McCain slammed Sen. Obama at a press conference held in the shadow of a nuclear energy plant.

NEWPORT, Michigan (CNN) – A day after Barack Obama released a television ad that accuses John McCain of seeking tax breaks for big oil, McCain struck back Tuesday, calling Obama “a little bit confused” because of their divergent votes on the 2005 energy bill, which contained tax breaks for oil companies.

Watch: McCain slams Obama on energy policy

McCain made the remarks to reporters after touring the Fermi 2 Nuclear Power Plant, a facility that provides power to 2.3 million customers in southeastern Michigan. McCain is an ardent supporter of nuclear power.

“I saw that Senator Obama's latest attack has got to do with oil and campaign contributions,” McCain said, referring to Obama’s new TV spot. “I think he might be a little bit confused because when the energy bill came to the floor of the senate, full of goodies and breaks for the oil companies, I voted against it. Sen. Obama voted for it. People care, not only what you say but how you vote.”

Obama was one of 25 Senate Democrats to support that energy bill, which the Illinois senator has said represented a compromise that removed several of the Bush administration’s original proposals.

McCain also tweaked Obama for his newfound openness to offshore oil drilling.

“I noticed that there’s confusing now information from Sen. Obama as to whether he actually supports offshore drilling or not,” he said. “The fact is we have to drill here and we have to drill now and we have to drill immediately.”

Related: Obama teases McCain on drilling

McCain acknowledges that “nuclear power isn't enough and drilling isn't enough,” reiterating his regular proposals for a comprehensive approach to energy reform that includes wind, solar and tide production.

Flanked by South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Fred Upton of Michigan, McCain chided Congress for taking their annual summer recess without focusing on fuel prices.

“People are paying four dollars a gallon for gas, are sick and tired of a Congress that won't act in their behalf,” he said. “So I'm urging Senator Obama to urge the Democratic leaders of Congress to call Congress back into session.”

Let's not forget McCain is also confused about the version of the surge: his version where he is responsible for the entire military versus the President and Commander in Chief. McCain is also confused about calling Congress back into session (only the President can do this). McCain can't even remember if he voted for insurance coverage for Viagra and when the reporter informed him he did in fact vote and told him the provisions of the piece of legislation, McCain looked confused and then laughed. I shudder at the thought of him having control in the White House.

What a joke. McCain is confused on the issues. He is confused which direction the wind is blowing. He is so confused he still talks about Czechoslovakia. Uhhh... where's Lieberman to tell him since 1993 Czechoslovakia is no more. Confused old man.

Today the San Francisco Chronicle had an editoral that really summed up Obama's flip-flops = he's trying to score points with the American voter. The SF Chronicle endorsed Obama over Clinton – raving about him – not anymore. I thought their metaphor was right on. Obama must think this election process is a game – like the basketball games he likes to play and we are the spectators. A dribble here, a 3-pointer there – just depends on the arrangement and opportunity of the moment. This is the problem when you promote a wannabe. They don't know the difference between loyalty and whining, between committment and "it's all about me", between substance and just scoring points. Obama is starting to look the fool -

Independant Thinker   August 5th, 2008 9:17 pm ET

Obama doesn't have a CLUE when it comes to an energy policy.

Obama just wants YOU to conserve, use alternative fuels, and inflate your tires. What an IDIOT, that will not SOLVE the problem.

McCain wants to;

1)..conserve
2)..expand the use of alternative fuels
3)..Drill here, Drill now thus creating American jobs and security
4)..Coal
5)..Nuclear energy
6)..Wind power
7)..Solar power

Obama is a far sighted IDIOT

My father were a pride colord farmer and only listen to country and western music on an old battery radio. This re mind me of the old way of thinking in a new world of high oil cost and high to reduce it we have every thing within our border to begin reduce our dependant on fossil fuel starting in a year and a half. We have the land through out the South and mid-west to prduce the raw material. If start building Bio-plant now and fully begin preparing the for spring planting by fall we could strart produce new source by spring of two-thousand ten. And we all can enjoy listen old music again.

All the nasty, vile little sexists who were here when Hillary was in the race have now come out as ageists. with their ignormaus insulting disrespectful comments. I wonder how many of them could survive five years in a North Vietnamese prison camp and still go on to become a candidate for President even with the permanent injuries he suffered during torture. Your comments sicken me and make me want to go puke. Daddy and Mommy bought you a computer and you can't find anything to do but say pathetic, sick comments about a man who has more integrity in his little finger than you ever thought of having. The only reason Obamas pathetic campaign can't throw the racist tag on him is the little known fact that he and his wife adopted a little black girl from Africa as their daughter to try and help out. How many of you stupid twits are ready to do something like that?

HERE'S THE FACT. OBAMA VOTED FOR THE ENERGY BILL THAT GAVE THE OIL COMPANIES ALL THE TAX BREAKS!

MCCAIN AND HILLARY VOTED AGAINST IT!

What about that fact don't you get?

Spider   August 5th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

John-

Your intelligent and wide ranging use of the English language is, indeed, impressive. However, as you suggested, let's look at the facts. The mere removal of the Presidential restriction to off-shore drilling resulted in an almost immediate reduction in the price of oil. I suppose we should do away with the media and get all of our "facts" from John.

Carl Justus   August 5th, 2008 8:39 pm ET

The only person confused about how to get off the oil addiction is McCain. He does not even know if you inflate your tires, you can increase your gas milage by about 3 percent or more.
McCain should come out and say when the oil he is going to drill for will we ready for use. He has no idea when it would ready to use.
He has an aligator mouth and woodpeckers rear end.

CAW in MD   August 5th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

Tell you what - I'll take Obama's advice about the tire gauge, and the rest of you who want to can wait for McCain to start drilling wherever he thinks we need to drill, and then let's compare how much oil/gas/money we've saved after, oh, I don't know, a decade.

Bet you a dollar I've saved more money...

Jay   August 5th, 2008 8:36 pm ET

Now if Obama had called McCain confused you know Mac and his campaign would be whining about playing the AGE CARD and whatever else to distract from issues!!!! What a jerk.

Marie in California   August 5th, 2008 8:34 pm ET

Obama is confused about energy stuff. No surprise.....he's confused about everything. He knows nothing. He has no experience upon which to base anything he says......like, 143 days in the Senate doesn't qualify as experience, any more than a whirlwind trip to Europe and the Middle East establishes foreign policy credentials.

McCain has experience, a long and transparent track record, and he has given much for his country. You know what to expect based on his history, and you know exactly what he's made of. Obama has nothing.....only something vaguely akin to the "emperor's new clothes".....you're told he he has them but you can't really see them.

Obama is what clinical psychologists would call an open and inviting "blank slate" upon which people can "write" whatever they please, based on their own needs, beliefs, hopes, dreams, etc. In the profession, it's called "transference." It is very interesting indeed to watch that occuring on a national scale.....Wall Street politics at it's finest. It's also quite scary because many people will vote based on this unrealistic schema.

If not Hillary, then McCain!

rwinstl   August 5th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

uh-oh, he said, "confused". he MUST be saying that Obama is senile, right? Isn't that how you sheople think? This just shows how pathetic our eduction system in America is...69% of you support offshore drilling b/c you think it will lower oil prices? Ummm, do a little f-ing research for godsakes. I wouldn't care so much if you weren't affecting my wallet, but I don't care if the price of gas goes down $1 in 10 years when it is $10/gal. Wake up!!!!

Maverick? He is Bush III. Change? He is about as common as a politician as they come.

And you want to hear the biggest joke? The HRC supporters that think McCain respects them more than Obama. Ha! If I only didn't have to hear everyone complain about 4 years of McCain and his policies it would be funny. Straight talk? Why don't you check out what he says. Oh, wait, you would actually read the words he says and digest them instead of just use the interpretation provided you by the reporter.

What a joke.

I have to disagree with Michelle Obama. I'm not proud of this country. Look at the level of intellect, or lack thereof, on these posts. I can understand people not liking a candidate, but why all the hatred? Is it because an African-American man is doing better then you? Do you think calling Obama derogatory names is going to influence how people vote? Sadly, it will, because of the large percentage of Americans who are either too stupid, or too lazy to do any real research on their own. Instead they only perpetuate hate and hysteria by calling Obama 'Obama bin Laden, or Obama Hussein' or whatever scary comparison they try to make. If Obama is not the next President, not only has the nation done a great injustice to itself, it's also a slap in the face to the world, who were hoping to finally see America with a true world leader at the helm.

Hey Shannon

Anyone running for the office of President should be forced to resign their seat in whatever office they hold.. Senators, Governors, etc.. They can't be effective for their constituents and still campaign. I say make the office of President a single 7 year term. No running for reelection. Allow the voters to decide if a impeachment is warranted. Put it to a vote. 2/3rd majority in a special election. Also the vote for President needs to move to a weekend starting at 6am Saturday morning running 36 consecutive hours ending Sunday at 6pm. That way EVERYONE will have a chance to vote. No excuses.. They votes will be tabulated, no "exit polling" and the office of President will be announced Monday evening!!! America needs to change or else!!

I think John McCain is the one who is confused. Oh wait, no, its America that is confused. Majority of the country want change but are afraid of that change.

McCain is like that old uncle that shows up to family reunions or major holiday gatherings. He gets drunk off the boxed wine, complains about the food, makes comments about the family that shouldn't even be said to the family then laughs about it!! John your way past your prime. If you were on the board as a CEO you would have been removed years ago.

If we drill it will take 3-5 years before America sees a drop of oil. Can we wait 3-5 years? NO.. McCain will be dead from the stress of the job of President.. America needs to look at alternative fuel sources. I haven't heard 1 thing positive from McCain in 3 months.. What are his views? What are his plans? He can't mention his position first, instead he attacks attacks and attacks.. McCain your a disgrace to me, as I served my country in the Navy also. Shame to admit I served in the same branch you did!! And when was the last time you rode a Harley??

victorhill   August 5th, 2008 7:59 pm ET

Remember when Sen. McCain Said This;

"McCain said in April, “I’m sorry to tell you that the price of oil — as far as I can tell — is not gonna go down anytime soon until we eliminate our dependency on it. We can do that as a nation — we can turn out the lights five minutes earlier, we don’t have to drive the extra block.”

What’s wrong with this? Nothing in particular. In fact, it’s probably about as sensible as what Obama said about inflating our tires and getting regular tune-ups.

The difference is, Dems didn’t spend a week getting “giddy” about using lightbulbs as a political prop and insisting that McCain’s entire energy policy is composed of turning off the lights.

You can make up whatever stories you want, but those are the facts, you could also check CNN's archives they did a story on it. McCain is up there, in the worst category , but Obama beats everyone. Maybe as a voter, you should check out senate.gov and learn a little bit about the man you support. It's sad really, how uninformed you seem to be.

"But now that gas prices have spiked, McCain is running for President on a drill-first platform, and polls suggest that most Americans agree with him. It's sad to see his campaign adopting the politics of the tire gauge, promoting the fallacy that Americans are powerless to address their own energy problems. Because the truth is: Yes, we can. We already are. "

This quote from Time.com sums up what Sen. McCain and the Republicans think of the American peoples ability to make our own judgement and act on our own. Sen. McCain and his goons cater to ignorance and validate those who refuse to think on their own.

McCain has no credibility on this issue. He's been in Congress for 26 years, so he's already part of the problem. Then his solutions do more harm (more drilling) than good (some alternatives). But it's ridiculous for him to whine about Congress not doing enough when he's part of that. And if he couldn't get more done, than how can he claim he's a leader? And how in the world can he fault Congress for not doing enough, when he hasn't bothered to show up in the Senate for 4 months. 4 months! And he's whining about Congress (himself included) having a break? No credibility here!

If McCain wins, the country will continue its march to hell. Race relations will get worse, economy will get worse, China and India will emerge as superpowers with more money and influence.

If Obama wins, the country will come together as one. People will get excited about the future, other countries will begin to respect America again, America's respect in the world restored, race relations in the country will impove, new energy jobs will be created, American schools will start competing with China and India.

Welcome to the Third World America. This is the promise of the media created false Messiah .

This imposter is clueless, can't hold a position more than 24 hours, is completely unqualified to lead even a McDonald franchise and hangs out with scum like Wright, Farrakahn, Ayers, Ludacris and Rezko.
He has stated he wished he could rid himself of his "white blood" (read his writings if you dare) and will be eaten alive by the enemies of America. His child-like views on foriegn policy and the economy ensure our descent into also-ran status.

Great job DNC of "selecting" your candidate over the objection of Michigan, Florida and the will of 18 million Billary voters. Another brilliant strategic plan by Howard (Yeehaww) Dean and the DNC.

It was great to be on top for so long. Liberals, get ready for a wake up call if this Manchurian candidate gets in…..

Vote McCain or join the insane………….

Does anyone but me remember McCain saying during the debate that America is better off them 7 years ago and that Bush has done a good job. In April of he said no neg. ads and Cindy went on TV and said that is something that would never come fron JOHN. How about the voting record against "VETS". How about his voting record against alt. engergy. over the last 26 years. Factcheck stated that 89% of the things he has said about Obama are untrue. Is this even a question of who to vote for.

Once Obama decides which way he wants to stand on something without bashing someone with an outright lie I might listen. How can he bash McCain on energy when he is lying about his position according to how he has voted. He jokes McCain is for drilling only which is a blatant lie then bashes him about tax breaks for the oil companies that HE voted for and not McCain.

keepitreal50   August 5th, 2008 6:47 pm ET

Yeah! Why is it that McCain has a babysitter or two all up under his armpits all of the time? I guess since the Suni – Shiite GAFFE, McCain needs to have someone by his side to whisper in his ear that it's the sun that comes out during the day – not the moon.

Ted   August 5th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Indeed, Time magazine writes that Obama is correct here. "But who's really out of touch? The Bush Administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030. We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now. Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone did, we could immediately reduce demand several percentage points. In other words: Obama is right."

ellen   August 5th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Our young "not quite dry behind the ears" voters seem to think this
election if just another ballgame. It's serious, and we should select
a President that has the experience to handle the job. Since Clinton
is out that only leaves McCain. Obama is just not the right man for
the job no matter how much you may like him. Personality is nice, bit
that doesn't mean he has the experience that is needed. Vote like
an adult. Check out the facts!

dksig226   August 5th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Obama didn't want to temporarily stop the gasoline tax because that would only save a "few pennies". He is now saying we should open the Strategic Reserve!? That would only save a few pennies per gallon of gas (the federal gasoline tax is 0.18 per gallon). The US at current consumption would drain the reserve in less than 2 months. The Strategic Reserve is for emergencies, not to save a "few pennies". Anyway why would he want to help the disgruntled blue collar worker that he singled out during his campaign.

The drilling debate is retarded. And it is helped along by a media that is as complacent (complicit?) as they were in the build up to the Iraq War.

Again, the few people that have the time and dedication to pay attention, know that drilling will never reduce the cost of oil or lead to significant improvements in our energy independence. Yet, as per usual, and at no fault of the general public, those that follow the issue are in the vast minority. The media has a job to do here. Not play favorites, but simply to report the facts. Unless we are going to legitimize debates about the color of the sky, or the rotation of the earth around the sun, this argument needs to be appropriately refereed.

Isn't it crucial to point out that McCain flipped on his stance to offshore oil drilling? How highly ironic.

Why is it that all the negative trashy comments are made by Obama supporters.. It seems the polls are right and that the less someone reviews the issues and comments of the 2 candidates, the more likely they will vote Obama... The man that stands for change.. if he could ever figure out what change is.. everything he says he changes when he sees that his statements are totally wrong or he perceives the polical winds are blowing the other way.. what the heck does this man stand for.. other than the stock liberal stuff...no energy policy, no iraq policy, and all he says is let's give people $1,000 of oil money which would be illegal even if appropriate..

Come on.. what does he stand for?.. do not reference it against the current people or policies.. Just tell me what his ideas are..
and then check in 3 weeks to see if they are still his beliefs..

"We have to drill and we have to drill now?"

What will this accomplish except to use fear in order for Exxon's record profits to catapult higher? Folks, much of that $4.00/gall you're wasting at the pump is going into so much profits the oil companies don't even know what to do with it.

1) They take their 11B/quarter profits and buy back stock vs investing in alternative energy research
2) They sit on 60 million acres of drillable land already and for some reason don't use it but demand to drill offshore and in protected areas like Anwar Province? Oh, there won't be an oil spill, the technology's better, just trust us! Right.
3) If they were to drill today you wouldn't see additional oil for 10 years.
4) Once we get that additional oil we'll see a 2 cent drop in gas prices.

Is it worth it to ignore what Obama is saying (T.Boone Pickins too, by the way) and blindly follow the oil-funded candidate?

I love America! But we are idiots!!

We have a potential presidents who wants a comprehensive energy policy WHICH MEANS higher fuel standards in cars and INVESTMENTS in alternative energy (i.e. wind & nuclear).

So he willing to COMPROMISE for the republicans by letting companies drill off-shore (and 60% of the country believes in off-shore drilling) even though it will take 2 decades to reap ANY benefits. He's willing to COMPROMISE if republicans are willing to agree to invest in alternative energy initiatives.

If you don't understand this COMMON SENSE approach to governing, then you are officially an American Idiot; and G.W. Bush is but a mere reflection of your stupidity!!! God Bless America...

It's almost amusing to learn of McCain calling Obama "confused"... He will do anything, say anything to look superior...

If only McCain were to listen to what the energy experts are saying about drilling... that it will take years before any oil will be available from such endeavors. McCain's attempt to pander to the oil industries is disgusting .... McCain, it is you that are confused, and are not willing to consider the scientific and logistical facts.

I hope the US population will see this.

Travis   August 5th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

It is convenient to lie for McCain in situations concerning the public eye. If he were to tell the truth then people would push him off as a post traumatic victim who is clearly ill equipped for this global stage. He has no plan aside from burning Obama.

Blindly follow Obama? No, we follow with eyes open because we are the educated, NON ignorant group of americans who come through and pick up the trash left behind by swindlers and the corrupt. Reagen F**D up all of Ford and Carter's hard work for Solar. Obama will once again bring Solar back to the proper funding it deserves providing energy freedom, and energy abundance.

McCain has no solution but to "STAY THE COURSE" of FAILURE. This, friends, is not a course which we can afford to follow. Do not ignorantly follow McCain to failure. Do some research and you will come to the true hope for not only America but the entire world.

Global Warming is not only clear, but a growing present danger. Ignorance may be bliss to the McCain followers, but for those of us who actually try to make this world livable for future generations, and enjoyable for current generations, for those of us ignorance is inexcusable and unaffordable.

Why isn't Phoenix solar powered yet? Republicans just cut funding for Solar research. Republicans want to give more money to big oil. Big oil makes record profits. The US economy is in the toilet. Where did the electric cars go? Why is John McCain accepting big donations from oil companies?

Add it up and it equals Republicans do not care about the USA! This is patriotism? This is family values?

Obama 08 Republicans never again!

yet McCain does NOT deny the charges of taking money from big oil after he flip flopped, he has the nerve to call an ad based in truth an attack ad yet McCain himself confuses Paris Hilton and phallic symbols as humor. McCain offers an "all of the above" approach...what is that? cuts and perks to oil companies is that above, corporate welfare, is that above? war with Iran is that above? nuclear waist is that above? come on John...American is NOT for sale, you are on the auction block ALONE.

Dave   August 5th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Interesting how when Obama releases a negative ad the word "accuses" is used. When McCain releases a negative ad it is called a negative ad, and then the next several article describe how McCain is going negative. What ever happened to an unbiased media?

Shannon   August 5th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

He's must be confused on every issue, that's why he keeps flip flopping back and forth. First he voted to give big oil huge tax breaks, when he voted for the Cheney Energy Bill, now he's whining that they make to much. Weren't they making to much when he gave them the tax cuts. He flipped on FISA, gun control, public financing, abortion, he hates BIll Clinton, Bill Clinton is a racist, now his campaign says he is exactly like Bill Clinton. He wants time tables, he doesn't, now he does again. I would say Obama is confused. Not as confused as those who would vote for him though!

Ambrose Smith, Borrego Springs, California   August 5th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Were those tire gauges made in China?

McCain shouldn't be tossing that word "confused" around. It will only reming the general populace that the old fogey is the one who is confused.

Bill   August 5th, 2008 6:08 pm ET

Uh, Denise, he didn't ACTUALLY mean Obama was confused...that was political sarcasm. But to your point, Obama has made blunders just like McCain, and he changes his mind just like McCain.

I personally don't mind if people change their mind–it isn't necessarily "flip flopping" and especially when the former position/statement was from years ago, to suggest that people should be lambasted because they change their mind is ridiculous...situations change, new data/information emerges, etc. and people SHOULD be able to change their mind without being criticized for it if they have a reason. But as noted by a nationally syndicated columnist, the only "crisis" that is causing Obama to change his positions on oil is a drop in his poll numbers. He'll do anything and say anything to get elected, and the sad thing is that there are so many...shall we say..."uncomplicated minds" out there that cannnot even remotely be objective about the situation but rather see him as the second coming....it's really sad.

By the way, the poll numbers ARE representative. Obama folks, keep talking about how Obama's going to kill McCain, etc....then watch the numbers continue to change. McCain does a very good job in debates, does well under pressure, and isn't going to crack the way he does in your fantasies. And by the way, aren't you Obama folks concerned about how little the big overseas trip did for Obama?? _I_ was sure surprised. An indication that more and more people are seeing Obama as a smooth-talking politician and little else. Just wait for November!

victorhill   August 5th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Remember when Sen. McCain Said This;

Confuse I Don't Think So!

Obama is never confused. He is just plain stupid and arrogant when it comes to matters of foreign and domestic issues. He does not have enough experience to deal with these issues and relies on his cronies to tell him what he has to do on an hourly basis. That is why he is all over the map. He sways whichever way the winds blow.

The major issue we have to consider this election year is this one...
Nothing else matters.

Will the United States and Western Europe have the intestinal fortitude to defeat the forces of Islam that are intent on killing all of us.
because we don't adhear to their beliefs or will we allow them to win by default and live in bondage as the Jewish Nation lived in Bondage
in Egypt for 400 years and Spain for 800 years.
Answer that one for me and then decide who is the better candidate.

For all you morons who believe Obamas lies and don't read the whole article, McCain has accepted that we need to drill for our own oil while we transition to new and cleaner energy sources.

Tjaye in LA   August 5th, 2008 5:54 pm ET

This from the man who thinks we will benefit by drilling offshore now, so we can save $.02 a gallon in 7 years.

I'm am giddy with anticipation.

Why wasn't McCain in the Senate, pushing for this? Probably because he was in Czechoslovakia, surveying sites for off-shore drilling.

BTW, there is no Czechoslovakia (even though McCain thinks there is). and that area is land-locked (although I doubt McCain knows that).
And Mr. McCain, Obama's message isn't confusing to most of us. He simply stated that offshore drilling is a possibility as a part of a larger, comprehensive energy plan. That doesn't confuse me. Does it really confuse you? That's unfortunate if it does. Your mental processes must be called into question if you call that confusing.

And for those of you making comments about me and others blindly following Obama, at least for me it's not a messiah complex. Obama is just a man. A smart, young man, who knows his stuff. McCain isn't. I am not blindly following Obama. I've just looked at McCain with my eyes wide open, and don't like what I see. If Hillary had won the Democratic primary, I'd be solidly behind her. My vote goes to anyone that's not a surrogate of Bush and his policies. My vote goes to someone that knows geography, and who is recognized as a world leader by other world leaders, even before he has been elected. On the other hand, McCain never got the attention Obama did when McCain went overseas. The rest of the world recognizes McCain for what he is. A surrogate of Bush. Not a leader. If McCain gets elected, the majority of the world will be very much disappointed. The world, Americans, is where we must live and trade. The world is watching.

susie   August 5th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

Obama's memory must be failing. Obama vote with Cheney for the energy bill. He always places blame on everyone but himself.

rob   August 5th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Once again McBush treats the voters like ignorant children. He says Obama voted for the Bush energy Bill that he McHero was opposed to. He thinks we are to stupid to understand the compromise Bill that Obama was compelled to support. And if McOil was really opposed to the Bill. Then why has he done a tripple somersault Flip Flop to where he now supports the Tax breaks for Big Oil be made 'Permanant' ?

Erik   August 5th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

A sad little has-been trying desperately to be relevant in a modern world.

indlw   August 5th, 2008 5:47 pm ET

Amazing, that you attack McCain when your candidate is blatantly lying in a campaign ad, has changed positions on drilling when he saw the polls indicate 75% of Americans support it, and continues to completely misrepresent McCain's policies. Are you intentionally lying on the blogs, or are you just too ignorant to research the truth for yourselves? Or perhaps even worse, have you so blindly jumped over the cliff for Obama that you can't distinguish good and bad policies, right and wrong, or truth and fiction? Sad.

Val from MA   August 5th, 2008 5:46 pm ET

I have to admit I am confused too. Didn't Obama just YESTERDAY admitted that he would be open to offshore oil drilling? And now he is mocking McCain for his energy "drill here, drill now" plan? Did Nancy call Obama overnight and he changed his mind ONCE AGAIN? I am sure you made Nancy happy again. What a pathetic loser this guy really is!

And what about that energy bill that came to the floor of the senate, "full of goodies and breaks for the oil companies," that Obama voted for? How do you respond to this and how do you explain your vote to the American people, Mr. Obama?

Sherry, Atlanta   August 5th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

By the way McCain:
- Solar
- Wind
- Natural Gas
Would be less expensive financially, and enviornmentally...we already have the Natural Gas, and Wind in our posession.

WHO'S CONFUSED?

Tupac   August 5th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

Thank you for telling us what Obama has done. Now tell us what have you done for the last 26 years in the Senate to help the energy issue?

Ex-Republican for Obama   August 5th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

McCain and his Big Oil Company pimps are doing ONE thing: Attempting to secure all available land for themselves to ensure no access to future competitors that might do business in an ethical manner. This will allow them to continue to bend us over their oil rigs and pump american citizens for all we're worth!

We can NOT allow them to have this additional land until they do something with the leases they already hold. Drilling is NOT the answer, but even if it is, they have plenty of land to start doing something with this very SECOND. Until they tell us they are busy on ALL of what they already have access to, they do not get more.

McCain: The Puppet of Big Oil Criminals

DA   August 5th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

You people that are supporting this crap of off shore drilling are idiots!!! Go do your research before being ingnorant to the calls of doing this crap!!! You will not see the benefits of this for years!!! Also, what they are failing to tell you is the Big Oil Companies have a number of leases already and are not even thinking about doing anything with them. They are not building any more refineries so, if they get this oil they won't be able to process it. I mean folks think about it oil is a commodity do you really think they want to put more out there? Wise up folks!!! Jeez!!!

Praetorian, Ft. Myers   August 5th, 2008 5:44 pm ET

No McSame you are confused. You voted against wind, biofuels, and increased mpg standards on cars. That 2005 bill also included significant more investments in renewable energies.

Funny McSame doesn't refute what Obama said about campaign contributions. (Yeah, 1.1 million dollars the oil companies gave him after he flipped on off-shore drilling in June).

soy   August 5th, 2008 5:43 pm ET

Obama hasn't wavered on his opposition against drilling but rather is willing to compromise if the bill includes enough for alternative fuels. I wouldn't expect Republicans to know anything about that since its always their way or the highway. Obama recognizes that a compromise is needed in our democracy sometimes and you can't always strong arm people to go completely your way. Compromise is something Republicans can't understand that's why they make domestic and foreign policy mistakes all the time because they resort to strong arming people into supporting their proposals and there's only so much you can do that way.

"McCain acknowledges that “nuclear power isn't enough and drilling isn't enough,” reiterating his regular proposals for a comprehensive approach to energy reform that includes wind, solar and tide production." – now, shut it Obamatards.

The simple fact is that we are A LONG WAY from getting off oil (gas, diesel, plastics, etc...) and EVERY PIECE OF MACHINERY that uses it today. We are still only reasearching possible alternatives and whether they're economically feasable. You can't just stop importing oil to develop alternatives...the country has to run in the mean time.

Reality check is that oil will be a major portion of our energy policy whether Bush or even Al Gore is the president for the next 20 years. The goal is to get off oil, the realistic path is to increase the supply so we can save our economy and security and begin the move to alternatives....like nuclear...hello Obama, why not nuclear?

So, Non Believer, who do you follow? I agree, Obama is a Politician, and he is going to say self-serving things that's what all politicians do, but didn't he say the gas tax holiday was a gimmick that was proven to be a correct statement even though he was ridiculed for it, likewise checking tire pressure, likewise drilling for oil, likewise withdrawing troops from Iraq in about 16 months,... He says things that make sense to thinking people. I'm not so much following Obama as I am repudiating McCain, he doesn't make any sense at all, he keeps changing his story.

By the way, the use of the word "hater" in your post pegs you as a Republican operative, that's a talking-point word you are told to use by the Repub. Central Committee.

He would be a bit more believable on "calling Congress back into session" if he had bothered to show up for work. McCain has the worst attendance record in Congress. He hasn't even been there since April.

Maybe we could take his various "solutions" more seriously if ever bothered to ... you know ... show up and actually introduce a bill.

Obviously, he was too busy asking his wife to enter the topless "Miss Buffalo Chip" contest in Sturgis. Somehow I don't think that's going to endear him to women voters...
