Watch Obama speak out against McCain and the Republican party.

BEREA, Ohio (CNN) – For almost a week, John McCain and his campaign have been mocking Barack Obama’s comments to a voter last week in Missouri when he told her to one way to conserve energy is “making sure your tires are properly inflated.”

On Monday a top McCain advisor passed around tire gauges labeled “Obama’s Energy Plan” to reporters on the Arizona senator’s campaign plane — and the Republican National Committee says more are waiting for the Obama traveling press corps at Tuesday night’s hotel.

Obama shot back at a town hall in Ohio Tuesday afternoon, accusing them of lying about his energy plan and ignoring what experts say would reduce gas consumption between 3 and 4 percent.

“It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant,” Obama told a packed gym. “They think it’s funny that they're making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework.”

“Instead of running ads about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, they should go talk to some energy experts and actually make a difference,” Obama added.

Both the RNC and McCain’s campaign responded by urging Obama to call for Congress to return from summer recess for a special session to pass an energy package.

“Rather than demanding Americans inflate their tires, Obama should be demanding Congress return to DC to vote on a real energy plan. Obama is wrong: Inflated tires are no substitute for oil drilling and a comprehensive energy plan,” said RNC spokesman Alex Conant.

The race took a sharp turn for the negative last week, as McCain released the ‘Celeb’ ad aimed at Obama, who said the presumptive Republican nominee would try to make him look scary by saying the Illinois senator doesn’t “look like all the presidents on the dollar bills.”

“Our politics has gotten so nasty,” said Obama in Berea. “But not just nasty, also cynical and manipulative, right? Where we say things that we don’t mean.”

“I’m happy to have a battle of words because I’ve got facts on my side. I’ve got truth on my side. I fear no man when I’ve got truth on my side,” he added.

I'm sorry Dem08 but Hillary may be an important part of the party but Obama can't make her his VP she comes with to much baggage and well Bill but I would hope he would have a position for her in his cabinet like Sec of State.

As as for the McCain campaing how childish and low we always talk about conserving here in the country but so few do it and when someone other than and environmentalist talks about it when want to make jokes.

Just like the McCain camp to not do their homework they used Paris Hilton in and ad and the Hilton's donated the max to his campaing, still LMAO about that one.

I once admired John McCain, probably about 8 or 10 years ago when he was running for President. He seemed to be a man of integrity and would speak the truth when asked a question. Seems to me that he made a "deal with the devil" a while back and was told that if he patiently waited his turn, he'd get a shot at the Whitehouse. The problem is, once he made that deal, he was no longer the man I wanted to vote for.

Obama is a breath of fresh air, not to mention someone who speaks the truth and he does it with intelligence.

During these trying times we need leadership and someone with vision, not someone who decided after 143 days as a senator that they wanted to be President – that's why McCain is our man.
He has the most comprehensive energy plan for the short and long term. He will keep taxes low and keep the economy growing.

Well … John McCain said that he was proud of the ads that they were making and the campaign that they were running. And part of that campaign is that flippant ridicule (and lying) about Obama's energy plan. So Obama is right that McCain would apparantly rather make gloating fun of a good idea, rather than promote his own ideas. What is McCain's energy proposal? "Drill now" isn't much of a complete plan is it?

Dear America, please all you single moms and all you teenage kids out there…and people working two or three jobs! Please please please check your tire pressure! That is the solution to all of our problems! If every American will check their tire pressure then we are all set!

Joseph, Los Angeles California   August 5th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

I was very upset this morning when one of the major news organizations said Obama's idea of proper tire inflation was "false." Yes, they said false. I thought this was a blatent lie to the American people who generally get their news from the big "3." On top of that, they encouraged Americans to go out and buy SUV's because buying a smaller more effiecient model will not save you money in the long run; yes, they said that to. Not only is Foxie news misinforming the public, that particular news morning show did it as well. I was appauled.

I have an idea of what the auto industry can do with SUV's… Do what they did to the electric car, serves them right.

I also think Obama should choose Hillary Clinton as his Vice President. I will vote for the Democrat, but I think the two of him together would be awesome!

Liberal?   August 5th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Wow….I thought Obama was a different kind of politician. Sounds the same.

However, he does not have facts on his side. He demonstrates an amazing lack of basic economics understanding. Supply and demand actually work. When you punish the successful people, you get less success. When you tax something you get less of it.

Solving the energy crisis by checking the pressure of your tires is like saving for your retirement by making soap balls from used up soap bars. Sure, I guess in theory it could help some, but the benefits are less than miniscule.

It is Obama's self-obsessed view of the world which is "ignorant", and not McCain's spot-on comments.

StacyGA   August 5th, 2008 7:32 pm ET

Thank You Obama for saying that. BTW- I always knew that some people in this country are stupid, ignorant , racist pigs. That said, unfortunately, there are far more than I thought. Nothing like the first Black man running for POTUS to bring all the hater, freaks, and sheets!

John McCain is truly a moron. He is pushing drilling in a place that wouldn't see oil production for at least 10 years, and even then it would be sold on the open market and wouldn't help the American people, yet he mocks simple things that will reduce our consumption of energy. Wake up America, this old man is a phony and doesn't have the skills or the knowledge to run this country. It's evident in his lies and flip flopping week after week.

ps   August 5th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

The problem with Senator Obama's "tire inflation" statement was that he said that if we all inflated our tires properly, we would save as much oil as we can get if we drill….

This is another of his "misstatements" – another exaggeration – he was asked a serious question, and gave a dumb answer —

I happen to agree that we should all be smarter consumers (not drive the extra block, keep our tires properly inflated, etc. etc.) – However, I don't for a minute believe that will solve the problem… Nor, replace drilling as a part of the solution….

Sarah   August 5th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

CNN, this headline is inflammatory and misleading! Obama didn't say "Republicans" – he said "these guys," obviously referring to McCain's campaign and its attack dogs.

You can't blast one candidate one day and the other candidate the next and expect us to believe you're an objective news source. That isn't "objective" or "balanced" – it's just sensationalism.

Change the headline to reflect what Obama actually said.

Khalid   August 5th, 2008 7:28 pm ET

Good for you Obama. About time you strike back at these baseless and downright ridiculous accusations. Why are Republicans mocking something which could actually help save Americans on gas and money.

Republicans believe in the free market and they should be able to understand hat if cars are more fuel efficient then it will consume less gas thus reducing demand thus the prices should drop. So how is encouraging Americans to regularly check to see if their tires are inflated a bad thing?

Thomas, Missoula, MT   August 5th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

I totally agree with everyone, especially Independent Latina for Obama. The reason George Bush was elected to two terms is because of Karl Rove's masterful playing upon fear based in ignorance. The scene described of the cashier's insistence upon the veracity of the tabloid story has played out countless times across the nation. The media plays right along, creating "news stories" about things that aren't news at all. CNN and the rest of the responsible media need to completely stop reporting on non-issues such as whether the Senator wears a lapel pin, etc. It only provides fodder for those who wish to remain uninformed about real issues. I cannot abide the choice of the person to govern this nation being based upon such idiocy.

It is in the interest of business to keep the customer ignorant so that they blithely continue to consume. Senator Obama's recommendation while seemingly trivial actually speaks volumes. Ours is a culture of consumerism, not conservation. Folks have the idea that it is their God given right to have as much stuff (crap) as they want irregardless of the needs of others or the cost, not measured in legal tender, to society or the planet. We hear GM, Ford, etc. bewailing huge deficits…well, d'uh! Only idiots who listened to George and his oil buddies and Madison Avenue for the last 20 years could not see this coming! Of course before he leaves office (only 168 days) George will probably try to push an auto maker bail out bill through Congress!

Dave Knickerbocker   August 5th, 2008 7:27 pm ET

Truth about McCain   August 5th, 2008 7:23 pm ET

I saw the cover of the tabloids too, but even though we know it's a lie, the funny thing is, supposed instead the mag talked about a candidate who left his first wife and kids (who he was actually cheating on) after she got disfigured in an accident to be with the bud barbie. Well that would be McCain. All I hear is that we don't know enough about Obama, but from what I see, he is a devoted husband and father who spent his early career working for the underprivileged in Chicago. What do we know about McCain besdied the fact that he got shot down over vietnam. He was a lying cheating husband and father and last week chose to attack Obama by comparing him to Britney, Paris, Moses and Jesus, so obviously McCain can't have too much faith to be using religion to mock his opponent. Imagine McCain, who seems to have no respect for his fellow senator, mocking some of the other world leaders as president. He'll be starting new wars and losing allies when he starts mocking them for not agreeing with him.

The problem for Obama is that his supporters are very mean spirited and want to "cleanse" the party of long time Clinton-base democrats and at the same time have a landslide victory. Obama is also very glib and corrupt. When asked why he voted for the Bush-Cheney energy bill in 2005, he states that it is because of the "incentives to alternative energy". The truth is that Exelon Corp of Illinois (a nuclear power energy company) influenced his vote with more that $269,000 in campaign contributions. The truth will come out in the months ahead.

Obama's tire inflation proposal has long been preached by environmental groups and auto manufactueres and is a fine example of part of the solution being something done by all of us for all of us, that helps both the individual and the community which seems to be lost on the Republicans who claim they want no governmental interference except when it is a governmental subsidy or no bid contract. The problem is one that has to be solved at both ends of the energy cycle.

Retired Veteran from New York City, NY   August 5th, 2008 7:21 pm ET

Go Obama! It's about time that you put those ignorant comments to rest and place them where they belongned to. John McCain and the Bush supporters don't even have a clue about what's at stakes in this election, they take pride in destroying this great Nation about everything America stands for.

Everywhere that Bush went, national or abroad, it makes you ashame to have this guy represents such a used to be America. Voting McCain is going to be more of the same or even worst. Obama needs to stand up and tell it like it is. America cannot afford another 3rd term of these people.

What happened to freedom of expression in America? Let the sheep that follow the candidates around have their fun. Come on Barry and get a sense of humor! It will be hard to unite us all if your going to insult half the country. Obama and McCain should try to stay on topic for a CHANGE. Try talking about the economy, paying down the national debt, education, jobs, taxes, social security, healthcare, etc, and other presssing issues the American people have that the federal gov. should be addressing. The mechanics of my car aren't a national issue and why bother to worry about tire pressure if we can't afford gas to drive? Truth is neither candidate has a energy plan. I am no expert on this but when i heard the…. air tires to save from new drilling offshore.. i went… CANT BE TRUE. After some thought, i did some quick calculations.
if 80% of oil goes into making gasoline, if 1 in 10 things on the road have tires underinflated, if 3% improved mileage.. then..
.80 X .10 X .03 X 20millions barrels used daily = 48,000 barrels saved.
I may be no expert, and my facts are just a guess, but i am not stupid enough to believe the ‘air them lies’.

The issue is not about checking tire pressure. The issue is that Obama is trying to pander Iowa farmers by trying to put off off shore oil drilling. If there are no off-shore drillings, the gas prices will remain high and Iwoa farmers will make more money off their corn.

And the fact of the matter is that even if Pope himself ask the Americans to check their tire pressures, most still won't and keep their SUVs that take so much gas regardless of the tire pressure.

Political pandering. Simple as that.

Retired Veteran from New York City, NY   August 5th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

The Sean Hannity, the Rush Limbaugh, the so-calles the Chistian base conservatives, they are nothing but the ennemies of America, spreading their hates all over the airwave day in day out. They will prefer to see America sinks like the Titanic and can careless about the future of this great Nation as long they have idiots and ignorants to listen to them and consistantly looking for ways to derail America.

I believe in good conscience, the people of America will be wise enough to make the right choice which is vote for Obama. McCain 20th Century's ideology, it's not what America needs this time.

My vehicle mfg. reccomends 30 lbs. in the tires.I have been running my car with 35 lbs. in them. I have ONSTAR and it moniters my tire presure at all times .The reason I do this I get about 20 to 30 % more tire life But I guess most everyone in America has quit thinking for them selfs They wait for some liberal politition to tell them what to do and how to do it

Morons in Charge   August 5th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

What we could tap (with the usual spills!) by expanding off-shore drilling
into protected environments could easily be covered by efficiencies from
correct tire pressue and regular tuneups. Any "plan" MUST include conservation. What in the hell is wrong with the Republican machine?
Are these clowns so short-sighted and GREEDY that they can't even momentarily put aside their self-interest long enough to do what is right for the American people as opposed to the "entitled" rich?

David   August 5th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Agreed; I read an article about this on CNN yesterday that was very well thought out. It turned the RNC's attacks on Obama back on them by very clearly stating the facts, one of which was that drilling where they want to drill would provide 1% of our daily oil needs, whereas proper maintenance of cars and tires can save 3-4% yearly. It's sort of a sign of desperation on the Republican's part if they're grasping at such flimsy straws to attack Obama.

VON BISMARK,Vienna.   August 5th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

They are arrogantly ignorant.

Doug   August 5th, 2008 7:16 pm ET

No Obama, what is ignorant is that you think we can inflate and tune our way out of foreign oil dependancy. And as a FYI… automobiles manufactured after 1988 do not require tune ups!

This is true and i can only hope that more americans see the republicans false statements and manipulation of the truth and reject them all. We need people who are going to do the right thing to get this country back on the right track and that is going to be DEMOCRATS. As for HRC it is not going to happen so PUMAS if you truely believe in CHANGE then get behind OBAMA NOW. HRC has.

Ron from Bel Air   August 5th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Sen McCain's handlers: You keep making fools of yourselves with such cheap shots. I can't imagine that anyone agreeing with your dismissive take on using correct tire pressure—some we can do immediately, and which will save at least two percent of our automotive energy needs—I can't imagine that those who believe your guff are going to be any new converts to Sen McCain's side.

You're really throwing everything against the wall, there seems to be no coherent strategy to move the country ahead, and you underscore the Senator's being out of touch with these lame attempts. That's the word on the street. Give your guy better support than this, or leave his team, for crying out loud.

The Retrospectivist   August 5th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

He did not say "Republicans," he said:

“It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant,” Obama told a packed gym. “They think it’s funny that they're making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework.”

Very clearly he meant McCain and his supporters, NOT the GOP in general. I am sure there are some very decent republicans out there that Obama has no desire to insult.

Get it right.

Dave S.   August 5th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

This is actually an example of the "bi-partisan" politics.
A democrat proposes and a Republican (sort of) implements.

Obama should actually thank john mccain for making his vision a reality and spin this situation as a positive.

Its true.. i checked with my mechanic. Tire pressure does affect gas mileage.

Calvin   August 5th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Why is it that everyone is so surprise that Obama is not further ahead in the polls? Isn't McCain the one with all of the years "Experience", knows how to win wars, understands most the needs of the American people, Why isn't he doing much better, why isn't he far ahead in the polls?

lk   August 5th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

it's ridiculous that McCain acts like Obama has been going around preaching about this whole tire thing.. he said it one time, got it?

what would you proposed doing, McCain?

McGaffe blows   August 5th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

So true.

Jim, Burlington NC   August 5th, 2008 7:15 pm ET

Here's the math – 3% – 4% savings for properly filled tires, at $3.70/gallon for gas that's like getting a .15 discount per gallon of gas.

That translates for me into a savings of $2.70 a tank, or put another way, I can go an additional 30 miles per tank.

Now, who's for the little guy? The candidate who puts forth a pretty good idea that every should do anyway, that saves oil AND saves you money, that doesn't cost you anything or raise your taxes – or the candidate that makes fun of the little guy trying to save a few bucks and do the right thing by lowering our dependence on foreign oil?

Put it another way, 3% – 4% savings in gasoline translates into about 3 million LESS gallons of gas a day used by cars if everyone checks their tires.

Now who looks stupid? Or senile?

The bullies of politics who look stupider every day…

If McDummy and his ignorant cohorts ever bothered to do that little thing called research, they would know that keeping your tires full and getting regular maintenance DOES save gas. Who actually promotes this idea? Not tree huggers-NASCAR! Repubs should have at least known this. I have a co-worker who treats Fox like its gospel, and she wonders why she can't get a freakin' promo!

Graham   August 5th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

This is exactly the reason McCain will lose in November. He seems to be a pretty serious guy on most issues whether you agree with him or not. However, his campaign is being run by a bunch of children. With the Britney Spears ad and now making fun of something that actually does work in practice, they are showing lack of leadership. I expect more from McCain. He needs to clean house in his campaign and start tackling real issues instead of making up phantom issues and strawmen to kick down.

PS: Agree with first commenter. Hillary would be a good second in command.

About the only things that can be done to immediately reduce gas usage, outside of driving less, is to inflate your tires properly and get a tune up. GEEEEEEEEEE just imagine if the American people would get off their butts and actually do something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and yet you neocons laugh at it and continue to blindly follow your Fuherer and Fuherer wantabee – McSame.

Ric   August 5th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

Opening up the oil reserves would lower gas price, but also encourage gas use.

Just like a tax holiday.

Thanks, Obama, for this bit of a comprehensive approach to energy solutions.

Oh, wait. Didn't Hillary and McCain said that tax holiday was just a small bit of the solution, too?

I just do not understand Obama.

SWG   August 5th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

The energy equation will require both conservation and new development to meet future demand. We can not save 3-4% of gasoline consumption by filling our tires, and expect to have future energy supplies. Obama stated that we do not need to drill, because we can get the same energy from filling our tires and getting tune-ups.

I am glad that ten years ago, someone had the talents and skills and
resources to start the drilling programs that are supplying us with oil/gas/energy today.

McCain's message combines conservation (turn off the lights) with increasing supply (drill offshore).

Obama's message asks you to stick your head in the sand, and accept higher prices because it fits his agenda for an oil-free world that runs on sunshine and hot air.

S. Shay   August 5th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

Get em Obama! It is ignorant to mock an idea that automakers, mechanics and anyone with half an ounce of common sense already knows is true. Maybe John McCain's campaign are purposely doing this silly stuff to appear young and hip but it's not befitting a presidential candidate. And it's certainly not befitting to offer up your wife as a possible contestant in a bare breast contest.

Scary thought!!

It never ceases to amaze me how anti-Obama people (Democrates and Republicans alike) try to make Obama seem as though he is clueless and then something all of a sudden happens to show that he was the only one clued in! Just to name a few:
1. Gas Tax holiday
2. Afghanistan
3. Proper tire infllation (along with other smart driving tips)

Bosworth   August 5th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

No, "ignorance" is Obama's comical vacillation on nuclear power and off-shore drilling. He adamantly opposed nuclear power, but now only opposes it unless it can be made "safe" (because I'm SURE everyone was just DYING to build an "unsafe" reactor). He ridiculed off-shore drilling with a stream of sarcastic dismissals, and then – after polls favored McCain on the issue – decided that off-shore drilling is okay. The man has almost no principle or policy stance that he isn't willing to compromise to get in office. That's the ONLY change we can believe in.

FL4Obama   August 5th, 2008 7:10 pm ET

You know, it seems like John McCain gets more stupid every day. i don't care if he was some kind of a hero – my dad was in WWII, the Korean conflict and Viet Nam twice – so big woo to John McCain being a hero!! I can't stand to hear the little man talk – his little child voice makes him sound so feeble. The man is too old to be president – do you know how old he'll be in 4 years – even tho we loved Ronald Reagan, people still made note of him nodding off in front of the press, among other things. But John McCain, he needs to grow up before I vote for him – his tire gauge antics are just more proof that he doesn't need to be president. Is that how he's going to behave in front of dignitaries or deal with foes? Shame on you John McCain – Shame on a presidential candidate behaving that way. We've had enough of bafoon presidents for a while, thank you very much.

It's about time, Obama.
McCain and the repubs are taking you for a joke. You are far smarter and more intelligent than most of them.

McCaine and the repubs are actually making big fools of themselves.

Senator Obama –

It's time for a simple Ross Perot type graphic that compares …

how much oil you save from inflating tires and changing air filters properly (800,000 barrels)

as compared to

how much oil we can pump from new off shore oil fields (200,000 barrels).

Not only does proper tire pressure yield FOUR TIMES the BENEFIT.

It is IMMEDIATE, unlike waiting 7 years (OR MORE) for oil fields and refinery capacity to come on line.

KISS … keep the message simple … this is what the republicans tried to do with the tire gauge.

It seems that: although I had a hard time believing it. I have seen and heard many of the democrats that were hoping for Hillary to win, have truly had a problem with the fact that; the majority of the democratic party chose a "mixed race" white & black man.

I have NEVER believed that "Racism" in America was soooo deep rooted.

What surprises me most is that; some "People" (especially those of mexican decent) will give up their own fundamental beliefs, political values, party affiliation and ultimatley their vote, due to stereotypical and down right racial hatred.

I am of mixed races with a white father (Price-Irish/German Immigrant) and a Latino Mother of (Pianetta-Panamanian/Cuban Immigrant) background. Although I claim my race for EEOC and Affirmative Action purposes as "hispanic," I have always been considered to have "Black Blood" due to the dark brown color of my skin. I have learned to accept that some "People" are just simply "Ignorant" (Ignorance IS Bliss…)

Because of hate…will YOU discriminate…?

We need some real leadership, and this includes tires and lightbulbs and all the little things too that could make such a big difference when multiplied millions of times over.

Its a pure shame how these lame neocons are so up on McCain. I'm a veteran serving, and I wouldn't get caught dead voting for him. He said no on every stance that benefits vets (VA hospitals, GI Bill, etc). The only time he votes yes it's to send us to war. And yes you do need to inflate your tires properly. They check them each time you get an oil change, but I guess if you're so full of it (old & rich) you couldn't even find the stem caps.

McCain, Obama….neither provide any real solutions to the problem….but no government official really can….that's the farce they have over on the American people who want everything nice and easy and are willing to give away all their freedoms to get the perception of big brother taking care of them.

It was the free market that used to exist in the US (free of gov't meddling) that made it great….now as we progress towards a socialist economy we get to choose between a "sorta Democrat" and the next coming of John Kennedy…..

I'm ashamed of the way McCain and his campaign are behaving. Their comments this week and constant need to criticize is very troubling for someone who wants to be the next President of the United States. Obama's comments about inflating our tires and the impact on energy use were correct. Unfortunately for McCain he and his staff either didn't realize this or were unaware of the fact that his statements were correct. It appears that the entire focus of the McCain campaign is to be ready to criticize anything that Obama says and does as evidenced by the McCain campaign's readiness to criticize Obama if he had visited the injured troops in Iraq. This is not what a decent, informative Presidential campagn should be about. I will vote for Obama in November for so many reasons.

sweetnsour   August 5th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

This was an excellent suggestion that would be easy for everyone to comply with. McCain doesn't care about saving fuel, he thinks this is a big fat joke as is making fun. He doesn't care what gas costs, he makes more money than we do. I bet some of those folks that got that freebee tire guage from McCain went home and used it. I can see his strategy if you have no ideas of your own at least make fun of the other person that does.

How could anyone vote for him as President of the US?

Maybe he'll protect us from another terrorist attack because they know he will destroy our country from within.

Vaughn   August 5th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

Your ignorant if you think putting air in your tires will solve our energy problem. Nobama!

Jenny, Rio Vista, CA   August 5th, 2008 7:00 pm ET

Unfortunately, the Republicans know that a lot of Americans listen to one-liners and read tabloid headlines for their news. When democrats use more than two sentences to explain something they have lost their audience.

I read one comment that said that Obama is lying because everyone knows that people don't drive around with flat tires. (I rest my case).

I've worked for two oil companies and since the 1980's one of the various gas saving techiniques both firms have recommended to customers is the have regular tune ups for your car and keep the tire pressure at the correct level. TV ads, advisories at the pumps and gas econoimization campains. Since the 80″s mind you!

So how is it that when Barack only REPEATS know gas economy advice that the GOP thows stones at what their big buddies in big oil have been saying for almost thirty years?

McCain and the GOP are "gas-hos".

Zach   August 5th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

I have listened to Jason Grumet, Obama's chief energy adviser, debate with McCain's top aides several times in the past month and it's pretty clear who has a "grip on reality."

Obama's policy is much more practical, far reaching, and long term than McCain's. To poke fun at someone about this serious of an issue is a textbook example of how McCain's team is trying any which way to discredit and make light of Obama.

Hopefully the country will see right through this ploy and not allow McCain to distort reality. We are facing an immediate energy crisis that requires us to get off oil NOW! This comes by giving companies incentives to pursue alternative energy. We don't need to WASTE our money on trying to drill offshore.

And for those of you who would like to drill in our pristine national wildlife refuges….not while I'm around you won't!

jim   August 5th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

It is a proven fact that proper tire pressure, a tuned up engine, a fresh oil change and reducing your speed can make a large savings in your gas bill even on a weekly basis. Right on Sen Obama. John Mccain probably has never changed his own oil, put air in his own tires,or installed a set of spark plugs. I am 65 years old and still do my own work on my car. It really does make a difference.

Ketan Ahuja   August 5th, 2008 6:58 pm ET

McCain needs to stop criticising everything Obama does. it was calculated once that if every car in America kept their tires pumped to the manufacturers recommendation, we would save the amount of oil that could be drilled in the ANWR.

Joe   August 5th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Obama's recommendation for tire pressure is a perfect example of personal living changes that can alter our use of energy, and eventually curtail our dependency. It IS ignorance not to get this, and even worse to poke fun at it without full knowledge of its implications.

Winkzilla, Tucson   August 5th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

After near 8 years of neo-conservatism we have had our American way of life so debased by Rovian politics. We are a people that believe in truth and honesty. Nevertheless, Rovain politics is a buzzword for lies and deception. Somehow, it has become OK to engage in this immoral behavior. The Republicans have shown such an elitist character. Their self-proclaimed superiority seems to self-justify their means, even by immoral lies and deceptions.

Capitalism is an important and useful tool created by humankind. It has contributed to this country. Nevertheless, capitalism is not the end of all things as Republicans view themselves. Capitalism, Republicans and all of us have obligations to this nation in terms of both national security and public good. Even the conservative's father of finances, Adam Smith, recognizes this in his third duty. Lies and deceptions over free exchange of ideas can only lead us to tyranny.

As a general statement, anything taken to extreme comes at the expense of reality. This is true for extreme equality and extreme inequality type systems. Individualism is an important component to the success of any country. Extreme individualism is simplistic thinking and works against our national security and public good. There is a balance. The ideas of altruism and equality presented by conservatives such as Fredrick Hayek or Milton Friedman apply such ideas universally when they are limited to specific situations. Of course, it is silly to be altruistic in every situation.

In the extreme individualism of Rove-like politics, we lose site of our moral obligations. Any individual can view themselves as god-like and act without accountability.

Skyview   August 5th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

McCain is all subjective. This is because he has little or no ability to handle facts or details…..He speaks only in generalities and then relies on his campaign to fill in the blanks….But the citizens want to hear how McCain would respond to issues, not how his surrogates would respond…McCain is almost childish in his vision for the country; maybe that's because his answers are calculated only to get his party elected, not to lead the country to solutions to our challenges.

wam   August 5th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

chiwillie   August 5th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Tragically bereft of ideas for improving our country, wedded to malevolent special interests and completely bankrupt in morals and ethics, the McCain campaign and republican party resort to the only thing they can do well: sling the slime. Their collective childishness and rampant hypocrisy would be downright comical if not for the tens of millions of people stupid enough to reward it with their votes. This current version of the GOP is ineluctably headed to history's outhouse.

Obama, your energy plan is one big tax and spend proposal filled with mandates and laws on consumers and producers. All McCain is suggesting is that maybe just maybe the federal government should give states the right to manage their own off shore resources and loosen restrictions on nuclear plants and oil refineries. It sounds like your plan is more about absolute compliance from the American people and McCain's is more about free market solutions and consumer preferance. When T. Boone Pickens addressed the nation about building the worlds largest wind farm in the Cenrtal U.S. he went to talk with Lierberman, not you. You have no answers and all you have to offer is what you take from someone else. I don't like you and I don't like how you have duped many of my short-sighted countrymen into believing that socialism is the answer our problems because after all this country was founded on one freedom, "the freedom from government".

Bobbie, New Hampshire   August 5th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

Jenny from IN   August 5th, 2008 6:54 pm ET

Victorhill:

VERY well said.

I don't understand how people in this nation can be so manipulated by the lies Republicans are pushing out every day. Obama has a comprehensive energy plan and would help the environment, boost America's economy significantly, and make us energy independent and McCain knows it. So why is he lying about about Obama's energy policy? Obama is right, if you want to try and get a little immediate relief, inflate your tires, take your car in for a tune-up. That's always been advice given to American consumers to save on gas prices. So why is it so absurd when Obama says it?

Because the Republicans are trying to manipulate the American people.

And what is McCain talking about reconvening Congress? That would be great — if the Senate actually was capable of doing anything. But the Republicans are way too deep in the pocket of big oil to get anything done.

So, look. I know there're a lot of people who don't like Obama because of what they hear in the media. But, I urge you, get educated on your own. Read Obama's plans from Obama's website. Read McCain's plans from McCain's website. Turn off the AM Radio idiots (I don't think people understand how often they are lied to by people like Limbaugh and Hannity and Coulter.) I have a degree in political science, and I have a pretty good understanding of the issues these people try to talk about, and I'm appalled at how easily they can get away with blatant lying.

So, please, do your research, let's have a real election based on FACT, not rumor.

Adding to that McCain is acting like an elementary mischievious kid making adds on Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton also mocking and blampheming God and calls it humorous and funny I agree they are very ignorant Mitt Romney was on CNN today up holding the McCain's ignorance, he also danced all around the question on should Cheney be asked to speak at the convention. Also dumb McCain calls for Obama to call the congress back in session. Why don't McCain call for President Bush to call them back he's the Commander N Chief, Obama is not the President anyways if Obama had callled them back he would have been accused of acting as though he's President. Andrew Carnegie said, "As I get older, I don't listen to what people say. I just watch what they do." McCain gives us lofty words and then oversees a campaign that insults voters and distorts the truth. As an audition for President of the United States, it fails. I'm no great Obama fan, but his behavior in the campaign qualifies as adult instead of infantile. I'll vote for the person whose conduct in this campaign I can respect more, and so far that's not McCain.

Obama is afraid to face McCain in a debate, missing out on these town hall meeting makes Obama look weak in the knees. I just don't think he is up to the challenge. Obama is losing ground in this battle. McCain is far more experience in matters that really count.

Hillary Clinton should have been the party favorite, she could have overcome McCain 100%.

Larry   August 5th, 2008 6:50 pm ET

First of all, most tires are already close to proper inflation, so there is not that much conservation to be had. It is certainly NOTHING like 3-4% of consumption. That might be a max for extreme cases, but certainly not for the average.
Is it a good idea? Sure. Does it help very much? No. Is it an energy policy? I guess it is for O.
It is obvious that O and his supporters take pride in their elitist, although often ignorant, attitude. So be it.

Missy M   August 5th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

Has anyone ever noticed that when Obama is criticized, he responds with an insult? The man needs to learn to accept a bit of criticism. Obama's advice to a voter to make sure her tires were properly inflated was silly – yes, that is one way to save gas, but there are better ones, much better ones. Obama pokes fun of McCain just as often as McCain pokes fun of him – that's to be expected on a campaign – but calling someone ignorant is beneath contempt. Obama should be ashamed of himself. For once, I wish he would simply take the high road and just ignore McCain. Why resort to childish insults?

BigO   August 5th, 2008 6:49 pm ET

The only thing that seems to be inflated is Obama's head.

I would like to see Baraka Hussein Obama show his birth certificate and his cell phone records from 1999 for the periods specified by Larry Sinclair.

If you got truth on your side, just show us the truth already. Why would you want these "untruths" to continue to fester?

If I was GOP and had the dirt on this stuff, I would hold it close to the vest until right before the GE. And you Obama dems should not comfort yourselves in believing that the GOP hasn't been hard at work digging.

Vanessa   August 5th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Off-shore drilling is not the answer. Reagan opened up Alaska to off-shore drilling and look where that got us. Twenty years later we are in another energy crisis. If we use up everything we have instead of changing our glutonous habits when it comes to fuel consumption, what will we do then? What will OPEC charge then? How would everyday Americans cope with the fact that Saudia Arabia and Venezuela will have so much power over our economy? Fuel goes up, food goes up, no vacations, hard to get to work? Hello Great Depression revisited.

So many Americans support off-shore drilling because they don't know any better. Because MSM doesn't spread the information.

Afinbro in TX   August 5th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

This is a no brainer, McStupid, listen “my friends” as he often say , I want you to be stupid like me, first I want you call the congress back into session so we can get back to the business of drilling. Why don’t his party’s President call them back if it is such a urgency, the president has the power to do so, not us or Senator Obama as he would want us to believe. Secondly, he says that Nuclear Power plants are needed and if he is elected president he would immediately begin deploying more plants, and by the way Senator Obama is oppose to this (he McCain) keeps saying. Well “my friends” Although it does supply power, however the more critical issue to NP is where shall we dispose of the WASTE! Because by the way, the waste is carcinogenic and that is proven. McCain if you want to help the energy crisis…please don’t nuke us in the meantime. But he think we are stupid, well maybe some are. Oh yeah for the tire gauge laughter , when I was a child my father would often say prior to a family vacational trip ” let me get the car check out and make sure that the tires are properly inflated, when I asked him why? his statement was ” so we can get a few extra mile per gallon”. Now grant it the price of gas was not as high as now, however it still helped. Let me say why I mentioned that is because recently, commercial airline carriers suggested that reducing air speed would save a couple of million dollars a year, doesn’t every little bit help?

Wisconsin   August 5th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

What is sad is the amount of republicans that just buy this crap. I talked to one guy who thinks Obama is a Muslim that infiltrated a Christan Church for 20 years. With him was another guy who actually said Obama is going to raise my taxes. I told him Obama's plan only raises taxes if you make more then 200,000 a year and lowers it for others. His response, he makes 25,000 a year and in most areas 200,000 isn't all that much really.

Shane O'Sheeran, Las Vegas, Nevada   August 5th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

Does CNN or any other media go ahead as is their responsibilty and explain to their viewing audience that as per Obama and the facts that if everyone would fill their tires as he said and get tune-ups as he said that America would save 286 million barrels of oil a week according to (Reports even from the Bush administration)! and that is as much as would be pumped over a four year period from offshore drilling, and we could save that much every year, so it would do more than offshore drilling and yet the media does not inform of Obama's facts as averse to the McCain garbage rhetoric. That is what is wrong with this elction in a nutshell, and why Obama is not up by 15%…media horse race coverage VS. actual reporting!

Your close Obama. But in truth. The Republican leaders are not ignorant. They just think the voters are. Obama gives good advice to a voter who asks what an individual can do to help with the energy crises. Obama tells the voter the same thing that Nascar says, the same thing that McBush's buddy Charlie Crist says. Which is to use good proper tire inflation. Then the Sleazy McBush camp twists it all around to make fun of what in fact was a good tip. Of course multi millionaire Elitists think that people who have to inflate their tires to save gas are silly whiney little people anyhow.

Quick question for CNN: did Obama really say that "Republicans take pride in being ignorant"? The sentence, as reported by CNN, seems to refer to all Republicans, which would be a ridiculous allegation. So, either Obama made a significant mistake, or "the best political team in TV" should pay more attention on how the ticker's entries are titled.

Craig Nazor   August 5th, 2008 6:46 pm ET

Most people hear what they want to hear and believe what they want to believe. But our country and our world are at a crossroads, and what happens will not be based on our hopes and fears – it will be based on the physical, chemical, and biological properties of the world around us. We ignore these properties at our grave peril. I will vote for those who understand this. I will not be manipulated by fear, willful ignorance, greed, or cynical political posturing to gain power. I hope others will do the same.

I will be voting for Barack Obama.

If we all want lower gas prices now, what we have to do is get the Enron loophole closed.
Close the enron loophole and speculators cannot drive up the price of gas and oil!!
Why is no one talking/ demanding this!?!?!
The price of oil would fall at least $1.50 if not much more!!!!!

Michael N.   August 5th, 2008 6:45 pm ET

Finally he shots back at the tire gauge "joke".

I mean, I thought the Republicans traditionally believed that what each individual can do to help themselves is more valuable than what a collective government can. How can they now shoot down a very simple, do-it-yourself, immediate step… as small as it may be… to make things a little bit better for yourself… and instead prefer to shout and wait for the 'big government' to do something for them? Puzzling…

Concerned Citizen   August 5th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Dear Obama, the fault is not entirely theirs. Maybe they aren't proud of being ignorant. They've just become numb to the notion that Presidents are supposed to inspire their citizens into helping resolve the Nation's problems. Nevermind the likes of Washington, Lincoln, FDR, Kennedy and Reagan. All considered great presidents partly because they used their ability (there I say, their "celebrity" status) to move the citizenry to take action and make a change. I suppose you could accuse the McCain Campaign of being proud of their ignorance. But maybe it's just that after eight years of a President who can barely speak, let alone inspire, the Nation has forgotten that true leaders, like you – I hope – do inspire the Country into action. Just charge on!

Tom   August 5th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Brian   August 5th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Wow! Here he goes again. Mr. Elitist thinks common hardworking Americans are ignorant. Oh and only he has the truth so all us uneducated peons should just shut up an listen. My goodness. There is no way more than a small fraction of the American people are going to go inflate their tires after hearing him and even if everybody did, it would save nowhere near as much as drilling for oil. I mean, how can he say that drilling for oil won't bring down the price but opening the strategic reserve will? Such a hypocrite. He's seriously got a messiah complex.

Ron   August 5th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

Wow, did that one backfire on the McCain campaign and the RNC or what? A comes out and gives a small piece of advice that would save more oil than we could produce from off-shore drilling though 2030 and all we do is make fun of him. Guess Obama is getting the last laugh.

As for DEM08 and all those folks that proudly supported Senator Clinton, please focus on today's race and not the one that will never be. Senator Obama hasn't vetted Senator Clinton and if he was serious, they would have been talking long before now. Watch for Senator Clinton get rise in the Senate or be offered another high level position (I doubt she would leave the Senate) after the election. I don't mean to be critical or demeaning to you wonderful people but I kind of feel you are beating a dead horse and just don't know its dead. I like Senator Clinton and think her health plan was the right choice over Senator Obama's. I hope that he adopts her plan has his when he gets elected but don't look for her to be on the ticket. Let just make sure Senator McCain stays exactly where he should and not continue the failed policies of the past eight years.

“It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant,”

So are you Democrats going to continue lying and claim that Obama doesn't do any mudslinging? I know I'll just keep seeing more of his minions saying that McCain is the only one attacking people here, but Obama is playing the same game.

Do you guys really think getting 1 mpg more is going to make us less oil dependant? If so then please find yourself one of those nifty tire gauges they're handing out. I'm sure you'll see the savings. lol

lol   August 5th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

This was good … even NASCAR recommend that proper tire inflation can help with MPG!

Mai   August 5th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

According to the information I have seen, only about 15% of vehicles are driven with low tire pressure. The amount of gas saved was based on all vehicles driving with low tire pressure. OK.

Ashley   August 5th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

CNN why dont you report what other news stations have that Obama was the first one to bring up that he was bigger than Paris Hilton in an article a while back?? I know it is irrelevant but he keeps mentioning it on the campaign trail, I think it is fair for you all to report that he was the first one to actually make the parallel.

MB   August 5th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Good. I'm glad he said it.

GP   August 5th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Obama also stated the obvious:

Republicans are good at winning elections but don't know or care about governing.

The past seven and a half years are all the proof one need to support that observation.

John is the right choice   August 5th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

The ignorant one is the one that will tax oil companies, which didn't work during the 70's, it would just result in less drilling and less resources being extracted and higher prices at the pump.

Obama you are an empty suit that thinks everything should be taxed. You are the ignorant one, that will tax and spend us to a depression.

McCain is the lousiest candidate ever, if America is stupid enough to elect him, I'm movin out. If Denmark wasn't so dark most of the year, I'd go there. They are happy, progressive and intelligent.

Tom   August 5th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Obviously, Mr. Obama is an expert in hot air. From what I've heard, he seems to be very talented at blowing smoke in all the right places as well. But while he's talking about tire pressure, gas prices are dropping because the world has seen that 70% + of our population wants to pursue ALL the available energy solutions. Imagine what would happen if congress would actually start following through on that.

As for his tire pressure argument, I'd guess that there's a large segment of our population that already checks their tire pressure or uses an alternative to air to keep the pressure correct (most of them are probably republicans) so the effect if everyone did it wouldn't be that great.

Randy   August 5th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

Obama is exactly right. The Republican Party has been lying to us for 8 years and has no intention of stopping now. Worst than that the average American has been dumb enough to believe the lies. I hope beyond hope that people start paying attention the truth that Obama has put in front of us and act intelligently in November.

H-ROD   August 5th, 2008 6:41 pm ET

TRUE THEY HAVE TO BECAUSE IF THEY OPEN THEIR EYES THEY WOULD NOT BE BUSH REPUBLICANS !!!

BigBill   August 5th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Ignorant is when you stand up and say, with a straight face, that inflating tires properly will cause this country to be energy independent–that is true ignorance. Hussein is more than just vapid, he is truly a simpleton.

Duke   August 5th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

You would think that the American people would be offended that McCain would actually try to make political points on something that every expert has been saying all along. Tire pressure matters. The Repubs take the American people for fools and so far over the last 2 elections, the Repubs have calculated accurately. I hope that we, the American people, do not let them get away with it this time.

Y'all, McCain is not the same McCain from 2000. He is know a tightly crafted product of the Republican party. I like the man, but not for president at this juncture in our history. God Bless John McCain.

Sean   August 5th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Obama is absolutely correct. McCain slams Obama's legitimate suggestions, but still continues to push his idiotic "gas tax holiday" plan that virtually every economist in the country has clearly stated will not work.

Makes me seriously question how well McCain is polling….are the polls inaccurate, or are people so uninformed that they don't realize that so much of what he says is either wrong or simply a lie?

M. Winners, Mesa, AZ   August 5th, 2008 6:40 pm ET

Even me without a car have read and head that having proper inflated tires saves you some gas and keep your car well alinend. It is amazing how ignorant John Mccain and his campaine are. If america votes for John then you will have put into the white house someone dummer that Bush what a shame that day is gona be.

Jason   August 5th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

Now he is calling republicans ignorant and what do his supporters do… They start relating any stupid statement in society to republicans. Once again the Unity candidate of 2008 sounds and acts alot like the unity candidate of 2000. Bush said all the right things and did all the wrong ones so did his supporters. Preaching unity while spreading division is what Bush did and it seems Obama and his supporters are using that same strategy.

DemsUnite   August 5th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

Keeping tires properly inflated actually can reduce fuel consumption by at least 4% per vehicle, which overall would cut oil use more than drilling; drilling would increase our supply by 3% in 10 years and do nothing to lower prices now. What about the 86 million acres available to oil companies now that they're not even using?
Congress would have recessed whether or not their majority is Democrat; Bush knows this. Why did he wait until the 11th hour to present his bill? Simply to make Congress look as though they're doing nothing for not immediately pushing through his legislation without a broader energy package. Dems did the same thing to the GOP when they had the majority. People should really be able to see though this stuff by now, shouldn't they?

NoObama   August 5th, 2008 6:39 pm ET

Obama doesnt have time to discuss issues in Congress , he is tired and needs a much-needed vacation with family.

He is a talking machine, we all know, and needs a break.
Behind the scenes, he takes money from Energy and Oil companies, and in front of public he criticizes big oil companies.

Does he know Oil companies do provide employment to so many people, that oil companies do get involved with lotta charitable work, and that oil companies do give government lotta taxes, and they will give more taxes if there is an able President who dares to ask them, not a scary Obama, who just wants to run away from drilling, and exploring oil for Americans. If we have resources, use them intelligently.

cynthia ayers   August 5th, 2008 6:38 pm ET

Funny how McCain does an about-face when America calls him on not only his politics but also on his ability to run a respectable campaign. With all of his (and his staff's) childish antics of late, his disrespect for the American people's troubles, and his complete ignorance of what the American people want or need.. how does he expect anyone to vote for him with confidence?
Obama is running a clean, respectable… need I mention mature… campaign based on intelligent, thoughtful leadership, realistic and reachable politics, and a focus on the American people rather than on slamming his opponent.
And once upon a time, I backed McCain…

The RNC are not really care about the main issues we're facing. All they care about is themselves and that's why they are all corrupted. They are a corrupt party and their government. They enery bill they are trying to influence people about is not going to happen now, and sooner. It's not going to fix the problem we are facing right now. Senator Obama's energy plan is absolutely gonna fix the problem now and sooner than expected. So, people wake up to the fact before it's too late. Obama for president!

Kevin   August 5th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Obama should run his own citizens advice bureau instead of running for President. He could give out little pieces of advice like "Always eat your greens" or "Clean your teeth before bedtime" he would be making a much more worthwhile contribution to American life if he did this instead.

Boye   August 5th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

“Rather than demanding Americans inflate their tires, Obama should be demanding Congress return to DC to vote on a real energy plan. Obama is wrong: Inflated tires are no substitute for oil drilling and a comprehensive energy plan,”

This just shows how ignorant they are. Is using Sun Screen a substitute for a comprehensive health care plan? I don't see anyone handing out sun screen labeled McCain's Healthcare Plan. I am not in anyway saying that Obama's energy plan is better than McCain's but please don't try to trivialize something that could gas consumption (even if it is by just a little).

It's just like saying let's solve America's healthcare problem without telling American's to live healthier lives. My two cents.

The Other Campaign Strategist at 115th St & Amsterdam Ave   August 5th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

Senator Obama …. KISS … Keep It [the message] Simple Stupid

a) Democrats are always smarter and more intellectual about the case / rationale for their positions but they also communicate in a way that come across as complex.

This intimidates and goes over the head of the general population.

Few people (even then) thought Bush was smarter than Gore or Kerry and yet the mid section of this country kept voting for him. YOU NEED TO REMEMBER THAT.

b) Remember Ross Perot’s simple charts? Some people made fun of him but those Simple Charts gave visual Americans a way to get the message. Give them a mental image that they can keep as to why You are the MAN.

c) Tell Simple Stories … always limit yourselves to making 3 points … it’s all most Americans can remember / recall.

d) GO ON OFFENSE … Don’t Play Defense Keep McCain’s team off balance. He will revert to what he knows and what he knows will come across as dated.

Benjamin Reid   August 5th, 2008 6:35 pm ET

I saw Senator Obama speak at the Town Hall in Berea. I cannot stress enough how impressive he was. He is obviously a very good speaker and his prepared speech on energy was wonderful, but after, when he took questions from the audience, is when he was really spectacular. He is intelligent, he listens, and is thoughful with his responses. I am a Hillary supporter, and though I never doubted I would vote for the democratic candidate, after seeing Senator Obama in person, I couldn't be more excited about the possibilites to come. Thank you to the Obama campaign and Baldwin Wallace College for hosting the event.

Indeed, Time magazine writes that Obama is correct here. "But who's really out of touch? The Bush Administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030. We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now. Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone did, we could immediately reduce demand several percentage points. In other words: Obama is right."

Denise   August 5th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Don't forget, they are also bitter, you condescending jerk.

Taylor Davis   August 5th, 2008 6:34 pm ET

Obama is the ignorant one. Experts say that is a car's tire pressure is not the expected amount, then changing that can add 3 to 4 % improvement to that automobile. However, many people already have their their tire pressure at the recommended amount, so if everyone checked their tire pressure, we could not expect a nationwide 3 or 4% drop. That is just not true.
It is about time that we elected politician who are smarter than goats.

Of course John McCain's response was to distract to the strawman garbage of the less than competent Republicans creeping around the closed Congress, what else can he say in the face of facts and reality with nothing but angry old man rhetoric and a campaign staff left over from Bush 04. They don't deal in issues, substance, and facts, unlike Obama…the McCain campaign deals in the old old ways, as their party is fast becoing…old and mostly dead!

Here are the facts…

Jack, How about this…

I realize that it cuts against the media narrative right now to focus on anything that doesn't suggest a dead-heat, but it's quite instructive to see how the independent groups (and even right-leaning ones) currently see the state of the race through the only prism that matters — the Electoral College:

Obama McCain Margin
Real Clear Politics 322 216 Obama +106
Electoral-Vote.com 316 209 Obama +107
FiveThirtyEight.com 303 235 Obama + 68
Pollster.com 284 147 Obama +137
AVERAGE 306 202 Obama +104
If you think about the reporting of the fluctuating state polls lately that show a tight race, all of them involve red states that McCain can't afford to lose: Colorado, Montana, Virginia, Ohio, Florida, North Carolina, Alaska, Georgia, etc.
Despite the media narrative that a number of blue states are competitive, the truth is none of the recent polling shows McCain making any significant inroads in the blue states. Consider:

·In Michigan, McCain had not led in any poll since May;
·In Pennsylvania, McCain has not led in any poll April, and a Republican poll released last week showed McCain trailing by 9, in line with the current Pollster.com average;
·In New Hampshire, McCain has not led in any poll since April;
·In Minnesota, while one recent poll showed McCain within the margin of error, no other poll in the past month (including one poll taken more recently) has him within 12 points

So, while the media breathlessly reports the national tracking polls which shows a close race, the state polling is still showing a pretty significant Obama lead.
P.S. — Again reminding us how slanted to making this a horse race when it is not even close that CNN's political reporting has become, their current electoral map has it Obama 221, McCain 189. What a farce.

Obama '08!

McCain’s PHONY EXPRESS   August 5th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

It was reported yesterday that if ALL Americans would maintain their tire inflation levels it would save us 3% of our oil consumption. Compared to drilling offshore would only increase by 1% (see Bush’s own estimates!!!). Also, if all Americans would do proper maintenance regularly it would save us another 4%.

So Obama was the one stating the truth while mcCain’s oil drilling on our precious shores is misleading the American people. McCain’s position just proves that even after misleading us into the unwarranted war, America can still be mislead easily! That’s what McCain is counting on!!!

As for McCain’s expensive, long long term & dangerous Nuclear Reactors: First, they mentioned there was once a leak at the other closed Nuclear Plant McCain went to. Then there was information on a Nuclear Sub leaked not too long ago. Even France has reported 2 Nuclear spills last month!!! One of the spills leaked into 2 rivers!!!! Care to go for a swim?

So does anyone want to volunteer we build one of these in their backyard? Can we say 3 mile island!!! NOW THAT IS SCARY!!!

Yes, oil prices have increased but let’s use our brain!!!

NJ Republican   August 5th, 2008 6:30 pm ET

For once a member of Congress is asking the people you and I pay, Congressmen and Congresswomen to get back to work to solve our energy problems….to do there job…..And Obama won't advocate this??

The only reason why it won't happen is so Obama won't have to make a clear choice on an Energy Policy and dance around it till the election.

No wonder why Congress has a worse approval rating than the President…and what party is the majority again…..

If this is the new politics….geez…we are really in trouble.

Republicans are indeed ignorant. They would rather belittle and lie about something or someone than admit that they are wrong. It has long been a well known fact that proper inflation of your tires and keeping your engine in good working order will increase your gas mileage. I've been driving 44 years and have always known that is true. But, McStupid, in his lame attempt to discredit Obama, has shown how incredibly stupid he really is. Handing out tire guages is just another example of his arrogance and childishness

Annette, Washington, DC   August 5th, 2008 6:29 pm ET

No offense, to some of the repubs, but there is some truth to that. For example this, gen. election, each time I hear the repubs talk, they always referr to Obama said this, Obama said that, which is understandable to a certain point, they never come back with their own solution or idea of their own to counter Obama. I also notice that each time McCain speaks at rallies or in town hall setting, two things his wife is somewhere near, I guess giving Lieberman a break ?? and McCain is constantly reading from index cars as if he is reading talking points. McCain is really risky…day by day he is reminding me of Bush the 2nd. We all better pay close attention to these cues. Sometimes what you see, is what you get?

It takes time, energy, dedication and love of country to actually research the facts, and make educated opinions to support a political position. For the past 7 years, and continuing to this day, the Republicans don't want us to do this — but would rather the American population sheepishly accept their lies, spin and condescending rhetoric.

Not this time.

Republicans, your time is coming to an end.

Obama 08!

John Allen   August 5th, 2008 6:28 pm ET

Go Obama,

All these years Republicans did nothing, in fact caused ALL the energy issues we facing today. At least Obama doesn't matter how simple the idea is, due to the nature of current energy issue (caused by Republican administration), it needs to be corrected from basics to resolve the issue.

McCain's plan is extension of Bush-Dick failed policies in all grounds. So ask yourself, were you better of 8 years back ? Do you want the same failed policies go on for another 4-more years ? Do you want to suffer/struggle with bad economy, higer gas prices, lower job market.

McCain did nothing in last 8-years for energy, how can he even talk about it saying he has better ideas.

Belinda (CA)   August 5th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Anyone with half of a brain knows that keeping your tires 'PROPERLY' inflated will help with the efficiency of your gas. The problem is the Republicans have turned into spin doctors that are trying to grasp at every little thing Obama says no matter how ridiculous it makes them look in the end. Everyone should be trying to find ways to help the American people conserve and get by until Bush is out of office.

He said, "If you don't want to be throwing all your money in your gas tank, make sure your tires are not under inflated and you get regular tune ups!"

I'm glad to hear one of our leaders taking a common sense approach to dealing with this issue. Obviously it will not fix the total problem, but it is significant enough not to ignore!

So if you're going to spin, please remember that at least some people are checking the spin. And enough about the Paris Hilton ad. Stop referring to all of McCain's dumb ads — they have been trounced by the media, trounced by his more mature advisors of the past, and I think by voters who see them as silly, negative, and angry. Or course Obama is absolutely correct. Keeping your tires properly inflated, if embraced by the country as a whole, would make a huge dent in consumption of gas and diesel in this country. Who hasn't heard that before? This is PAINLESS savings. Just stop at the gas station once in a while and use one of those cheesy Republican tire gauges. The same is true for keeping the car tuned, not idling for long periods, washing and waxing the vehicle to reduce air resistance. It's also true of adding weatherstripping to your house, changing the furnance filter, replacing old windows, turning the thermostat down a degree or two. Some of this is an investment, but it always pays for itself. Other actions are simple and cost hardly anything but a little time and effort.
But McCain doesn't KNOW any of this. What can you make of this clown who can't even turn on a computer or send an e-mail? I'm not sure what he knows besides how to prolong a bloody, costly, unnecessary war. He thinks it's a great idea to continue Bush's policies, which is all the more proof that he doesn't know ANYTHING.

McCain's campain is becoming desperate, the only way they can win is to tear the other candidate down. This is the way that party has been operating for years. I hope Americans we realize that this year before we further subject this country to another four years of hell. MY fellow Americans, please wake-up.

I'm sure Republicans relish their ignorance just like Democrats relish their arrogance.

I just saw this on CNN. Obama is so arrogant and snide. This is not the kind of behavior I want my leader to exhibit. I plead with America to not elect this child.

I loved the comments that Mr. Obama responded with, the McCain campaign should do better research before putting info out that is not true. CNN has been talking about this at least once a week on issue # 1 at mid day on how to save gas.

I do wish though that the Dems would have stuck around a few more days in D.C. to sort this out. What a great sign for the public of making the effort to work together

Way to go Obama…attack and mock! good show!

Tom   August 5th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

WHY DID THE GAS PRICES WENT UP SO HIGH?

1. Major factor is 8 YEARS of REPUBLICAN Rule made the dollar so weak against other currencies, so the price of oil went up against a weakening dollar. You might now notice that if the dollar goes up by a dime, oil prices drops by 3 dollars a barrel.

2. As George Bush took the charge he changed the long standing policy on oil trading on the wall street. Wallstreet were not allowed to speculate on oil unless they are planning to use oil. Bush reversed the position and allowed speculation on this. Billion dollar pension funds like California pension funds started buying oil on paper and thus creating a artificial demand for oil which is in no way related to the actual demand. The resulted increase in gas prices are the cause of increase in the food and milk prices which is affecting common people like us

These 2 are the major factors in increasing the demand. It is NOT demand from INDIA and CHINA. That is bull**. So drilling more is not the answer to this crisis, that is what McCain and Republicans are trying to make it to. I think Obama is trying to address it and Republicans are trying to portrait him a fool for doing this.

Please, CNN please publish this. This is fact. You can go back to the first years of Bush presidency and see that how they changed our strong dollar policy so that they could improve the ex[ports. It is the no vision policy of this administration that put us in this big mess.
you need somebody outside from the oil party to get us Out.

NO MORE REPUBLICANS IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!!!!!!

Ryan , Indianapolis   August 5th, 2008 6:23 pm ET

Poor Obama , the dude is truly clueless. If he doesnt understand economics and supply and demand concerning oil, then how do people think this guy is fit to make tough decisions as the President. I am not a huge McCain fan but you know where he stands and it usually is not in line with the socialist marxist view that Obama usually has. Anybody but Nobama….

You go Obama! Push back on these Republicans that want to put more money into the wealthy oil companies pockets. Drilling is the way to do that and it won't help our energy problem one bit. Oh, we might have more domestic oil in 10 years, but the demand will have grown as well. Republicans talk in generalities and Obama has the facts.

Rob   August 5th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

I agree with Obama. However, unfortunately, a lot of Americans ARE ignorant, and are just sheep dressed as human beings who will believe what these ads tell them to believe.

The problem is people don't want to be accountable for themselves. They want the government to do everything for them. People could go out and buy hybrid cars, drive 55 MPH instead of 85, and, as Obama says, maintain good tire pressure, and they would save a ton of $$$ on gas. But of course people won't do that.

Ex-Republican for Obama   August 5th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

If we REALLY wanted to drill for oil, today…we could do so. There are around 70 million acres of land ready to be drilled on, leases in the hands of Big Oil Companies. If that is the answer, then why aren't we doing it.

This so called "Energy Bill' is nothing more then a ploy for McCain's Mommy and Daddy (Mr.&Mrs. Oil Company) to gain rights to all of our land, so they can further terrorize us at the pumps well into the future.

Drilling is NOT the answer, but even if it is, then start drilling on what you have and keep the rest of the land out of their hands until they prove they will do something with it. If they can not, then it needs to go to companies, upstarts, funded govt projects to do it instead.

McCain: The problem to all of our Solutions!

Kirby Alexander   August 5th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

For those MCcain voters … your candidate is actually making fun of obama's suggestion to keep your tires properly inflated on the vehicles you drive to save gas. THATS COMMON SENSE AND MCCAIN IS MAKING FUN OF A COMMON SENSE SOLUTION TO A COMMON PROBLEM. WE DONT NEED ANYMORE IDIOTS IN THE WHITE HOUSE !!!! MCCAIN VOTERS !!!!

Salina, Washington, DC   August 5th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

That's right Obama, you tell em!!! He hit the nail on the head, McCain, Bush, Romney and the rest of the republicans actually take 'pride in being ignorant' because they know their audience is just as ignorant. They know if they repeat something over and over (regardless if its true or not) that their audience would actually believe it. Just like the push for Offshore Drilling, knowing it wont have an affect for a least decade from now, knowing that Big Oil (and them) will be the ONLY immediate beneficiaries from offshore drilling, and knowing it is not the answer to the energy crisis. But they know if they say it long enough, the ignorant idiots of this country will believe it, just like they did with the Iraq war. Obama is the only one telling it like it really is, he's the one with the real solutions.

Then he goes on to say, "…[w]here we say things we don't mean." Maybe B. Hussein Obama should just concentrate on saying what he means the first time around, instead of flip-flopping and saying "that's not what I meant."

Great job DNC of "selecting" your candidate over the objection of Michigan, Florida and the will of 18 million Billary voters. Another brilliant strategic plan by Howard (Yeehaww) Dean and the DNC.

Jon   August 5th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

We all know that if congress came back the vote for more leases to big oil would be "NO". With 50 million acres of leases in their pocket now that they're not drilling on why would we want to give them more to do the same. I have an idea >>>GIVE UP ALL LEASES THAT YOU HAVE NOT THAT YOUR NOT DRILLING ON AND WE'LL GIVE YOU NEW LEASES FOR THE AREA YOU WANT TO DRILL ON".

AMERICA WAKE THE HELL UP THIS IS A SHELL GAME THE THE REPUBLICAN RIGHT WANT TO TO BELEIVE. 30 YEARS OF FAILD

Nice headline CNN, way to misinterpret Obamas' words. He was referring to the people running McCains' campaign, not republicans in general. But why let reality interfere with an opportunity to further divide and manipulate this society, right?

John in Iowa   August 5th, 2008 6:11 pm ET

Hussein, you are not a quarter of the man John McCain is. You never will be. Soon enough your robots will "snap to" and realize the fraud you are. They will soon hear about Larry Sinclair. They will hear more about your friends, such as William Ayers, Jeremiah Wright, Louis Farrakhan, John Edwards (you know, the one who takes a mistress while his wife has cancer), Father Plehger, Tony Resco, etc…

Thank You Senator. If we can save 3-4% of our consumption now while waiting until a comprehensive energy package can reduce our consumption even more then we'll be much better off.

Oh and almost all the Republican bills were aimed at drilling and nothing comprehensive. More quick fix and no long term but I guess some people only can see so far.

Dandelion.   August 5th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

Amen, Barack.

Terry, Dallas Texas   August 5th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

I did some checking and according to studies if everyone did keep their tires inflated it would reduce US gasoline consumption by about 3 to 4 %. Thats saves an awful lot of gasoline without costing much.

In fact it would most likely save as much gas as offshore drilling would bring on line.

Joe Kiloz   August 5th, 2008 6:09 pm ET

the republicans really are pathetic all the well earned money from supporters they are wasting on ludicrous ads lionizing Paris hilton and Brittany Spears instead of spending this money on something useful…discussing the issues. There is some real fodder here for debate but they seem intent on "having fun" All I can say is …GUYS FOR GOD'S SAKE GROW UP THE COUNTRY IS NEED OF SERIOUS SOLUTIONS NOT RIDICULOUS ADS JUST FOR THE "FUN OF IT"..in short start acting like grown ups..you are 71 years old after all McCain!!!!!!!!

Yeah.

I'd say those Paris Ads pretty much hit the spot.

The sad thing is, they are more specific than anything that comes out of your gaping hold, Obama.

"Our politics has gotten so nasty,” said Obama in Berea. “But not just nasty, also cynical and manipulative, right? Where we say things that we don’t mean.”

Sound like a confession to me.

"Pot had helped, and booze; maybe a little blow when you could afford it." Obama 95   August 5th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

That's why you now say it's ok to off shore drill…. OMG… can you pick a stance and stay there more than a week.

Obama 08… a tool you can rely on!

Anne   August 5th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

Hey Wolf, proof Obama is correct – try googling Buffalo Chip Cindy McCain. The story you refuse to cover that is all over the internet of John McCain offering up his wife to enter a topless contest for Miss Buffalo Chip –

We know how biased CNN is, but aren't you being OBVIOUS????

victorhill   August 5th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

Remember when Sen. McCain Said This;

"McCain said in April, “I’m sorry to tell you that the price of oil — as far as I can tell — is not gonna go down anytime soon until we eliminate our dependency on it. We can do that as a nation — we can turn out the lights five minutes earlier, we don’t have to drive the extra block.”

What’s wrong with this? Nothing in particular. In fact, it’s probably about as sensible as what Obama said about inflating our tires and getting regular tune-ups.

The difference is, Dems didn’t spend a week getting “giddy” about using lightbulbs as a political prop and insisting that McCain’s entire energy policy is composed of turning off the lights.

OUCH! BUT ITS THE TRUTH! Today at the grocery store, I was at the check out stand and noticed the "Globe's" headline "Obama's Love Child" …….blah…….blah. I said to the clerk, "good grief are they lying or what?!" The poor woman looks at me with a straight face and says, "yes, its true! And Michele is leaving him!" Dear God, are people getting their news from the tabloids now!????

Its bad enough that most Republicans I know are glued to the AM Radio, listening to the hate-and-fear-mongers, Reagan, Savage, Hannity & Limbaugh-the-clown. Now they are reading the tabloids for truth!!!!!

GOD HELP US!

Dem08   August 5th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

I wanted to comment on several blogs at CNN today, but they are all closed.. To sum up everything..This race is boring. Its great to see Hillary getting back on the trail…if Obama and his democrats are smart, Hillary will be the VP choice..I for one do not see getting excited about any other ticket…Obama needs Hillary's experiance and Hillary needs Obama's popularity. This is a great team, and one America needs..Come on ObamaNation, lets get Hillary on this ticket and take back the White House, hopefully for 16 years.

Ardnuas   August 5th, 2008 6:05 pm ET
