Obama: Republicans take pride in being ignorant

Watch Obama speak out against McCain and the Republican party.

BEREA, Ohio (CNN) – For almost a week, John McCain and his campaign have been mocking Barack Obama’s comments to a voter last week in Missouri when he told her to one way to conserve energy is “making sure your tires are properly inflated.”

On Monday a top McCain advisor passed around tire gauges labeled “Obama’s Energy Plan” to reporters on the Arizona senator’s campaign plane - and the Republican National Committee says more are waiting for the Obama traveling press corps at Tuesday night’s hotel.

Obama shot back at a town hall in Ohio Tuesday afternoon, accusing them of lying about his energy plan and ignoring what experts say would reduce gas consumption between 3 and 4 percent.

“It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant,” Obama told a packed gym. “They think it’s funny that they're making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework.”

“Instead of running ads about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, they should go talk to some energy experts and actually make a difference,” Obama added.

Both the RNC and McCain’s campaign responded by urging Obama to call for Congress to return from summer recess for a special session to pass an energy package.

“Rather than demanding Americans inflate their tires, Obama should be demanding Congress return to DC to vote on a real energy plan. Obama is wrong: Inflated tires are no substitute for oil drilling and a comprehensive energy plan,” said RNC spokesman Alex Conant.

The race took a sharp turn for the negative last week, as McCain released the ‘Celeb’ ad aimed at Obama, who said the presumptive Republican nominee would try to make him look scary by saying the Illinois senator doesn’t “look like all the presidents on the dollar bills.”

“Our politics has gotten so nasty,” said Obama in Berea. “But not just nasty, also cynical and manipulative, right? Where we say things that we don’t mean.”

“I’m happy to have a battle of words because I’ve got facts on my side. I’ve got truth on my side. I fear no man when I’ve got truth on my side,” he added.

I guess this is what McSame meant when he repeatedly said he'd run a positive campaign. Positively ignorant.

Barack, PLEASE continue in your tradition of talking to us electorate as though we are adults! State the fact... Properly inflated tires will save 4 times what all the off shore drilling will accomplish. When added to good car maintainence, it completely eclipses anything that McCain has proposed. Moreover, the effect is immediate!

Obama is not a guy to roll over and let the GOP attack dogs spew ignorant, ridiculous remarks. The debates are going to be SWEET. McCain is going to get worked and will show everyone what a moron he truly is.

Time for black folk to show the ignorant black folk a thing or two.

    Do NOT block Obama.

    Our time has come.

It's nice to know that Obama alienates 50 percent of the country by calling them ignorant. Way to go.

That headline is misleading (imagine that with the media towards Obama). Barack said "these guys" directing misguided attacks at him, not Republicans in general. Obama actually appeals to some Republicans who understand his insightful proposals. Obama '08

No, "ignorance" is Obama's comical vacillation on nuclear power and off-shore drilling. He adamantly opposed nuclear power, but now only opposes it unless it can be made "safe" (because I'm SURE everyone was just DYING to build an "unsafe" reactor). He ridiculed off-shore drilling with a stream of sarcastic dismissals, and then – after polls favored McCain on the issue – decided that off-shore drilling is okay. The man has almost no principle or policy stance that he isn't willing to compromise to get in office. That's the ONLY change we can believe in.

  8. Amazed...again

It never ceases to amaze me how anti-Obama people (Democrates and Republicans alike) try to make Obama seem as though he is clueless and then something all of a sudden happens to show that he was the only one clued in! Just to name a few:
    1. Gas Tax holiday
    2. Afghanistan
    3. Proper tire infllation (along with other smart driving tips)

Obama said that McCain needs to do his homework. As a teacher, I would keep him in for recess because he certainly has a lot to learn. This is why he misspeaks on the campaign trail. One time I thought that it was only Alzheimers, but now I know that it is the lack of knowledge coupled with Alzheimers. We certainly cannot have someone like this as our next President. Scary thought!!

Get em Obama! It is ignorant to mock an idea that automakers, mechanics and anyone with half an ounce of common sense already knows is true. Maybe John McCain's campaign are purposely doing this silly stuff to appear young and hip but it's not befitting a presidential candidate. And it's certainly not befitting to offer up your wife as a possible contestant in a bare breast contest.

    Shame on you John McCain!

The energy equation will require both conservation and new development to meet future demand. We can not save 3-4% of gasoline consumption by filling our tires, and expect to have future energy supplies. Obama stated that we do not need to drill, because we can get the same energy from filling our tires and getting tune-ups.

I am glad that ten years ago, someone had the talents and skills and
resources to start the drilling programs that are supplying us with oil/gas/energy today.

McCain's message combines conservation (turn off the lights) with increasing supply (drill offshore).

Obama's message asks you to stick your head in the sand, and accept higher prices because it fits his agenda for an oil-free world that runs on sunshine and hot air.

Opening up the oil reserves would lower gas price, but also encourage gas use.

    Just like a tax holiday.

Thanks, Obama, for this bit of a comprehensive approach to energy solutions.

Oh, wait. Didn't Hillary and McCain said that tax holiday was just a small bit of the solution, too?

I just do not understand Obama.

Unfortunately a vast amount of the American people are too stupid to realize that what Obama said is true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
About the only things that can be done to immediately reduce gas usage, outside of driving less, is to inflate your tires properly and get a tune up. GEEEEEEEEEE just imagine if the American people would get off their butts and actually do something!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and yet you neocons laugh at it and continue to blindly follow your Fuherer and Fuherer wantabee – McSame.

...and Time magazine recently did some number crunching and concluded that Obama has it right. I can't wait until someone with some basic common sense, sound judgment and strong leadership qualities is at the helm of this floundering country.

Obama ,08~REAL change we can believe in.

This is exactly the reason McCain will lose in November. He seems to be a pretty serious guy on most issues whether you agree with him or not. However, his campaign is being run by a bunch of children. With the Britney Spears ad and now making fun of something that actually does work in practice, they are showing lack of leadership. I expect more from McCain. He needs to clean house in his campaign and start tackling real issues instead of making up phantom issues and strawmen to kick down.

PS: Agree with first commenter. Hillary would be a good second in command.

Now if the Republicans had called Democrats common-sense ignorant that would have been a fact!

If McDummy and his ignorant cohorts ever bothered to do that little thing called research, they would know that keeping your tires full and getting regular maintenance DOES save gas. Who actually promotes this idea? Not tree huggers-NASCAR! Repubs should have at least known this. I have a co-worker who treats Fox like its gospel, and she wonders why she can't get a freakin' promo!
