BEREA, Ohio (CNN) – For almost a week, John McCain and his campaign have been mocking Barack Obama’s comments to a voter last week in Missouri when he told her to one way to conserve energy is “making sure your tires are properly inflated.”
On Monday a top McCain advisor passed around tire gauges labeled “Obama’s Energy Plan” to reporters on the Arizona senator’s campaign plane - and the Republican National Committee says more are waiting for the Obama traveling press corps at Tuesday night’s hotel.
Obama shot back at a town hall in Ohio Tuesday afternoon, accusing them of lying about his energy plan and ignoring what experts say would reduce gas consumption between 3 and 4 percent.
“It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant,” Obama told a packed gym. “They think it’s funny that they're making fun of something that is actually true. They need to do their homework.”
“Instead of running ads about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears, they should go talk to some energy experts and actually make a difference,” Obama added.
Both the RNC and McCain’s campaign responded by urging Obama to call for Congress to return from summer recess for a special session to pass an energy package.
“Rather than demanding Americans inflate their tires, Obama should be demanding Congress return to DC to vote on a real energy plan. Obama is wrong: Inflated tires are no substitute for oil drilling and a comprehensive energy plan,” said RNC spokesman Alex Conant.
The race took a sharp turn for the negative last week, as McCain released the ‘Celeb’ ad aimed at Obama, who said the presumptive Republican nominee would try to make him look scary by saying the Illinois senator doesn’t “look like all the presidents on the dollar bills.”
“Our politics has gotten so nasty,” said Obama in Berea. “But not just nasty, also cynical and manipulative, right? Where we say things that we don’t mean.”
“I’m happy to have a battle of words because I’ve got facts on my side. I’ve got truth on my side. I fear no man when I’ve got truth on my side,” he added.

Can one person be so arrogant? No OBAMA!!!
Democrats for McCain!
Independent-Latina-for-Obama
WHAT IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT WE HOLD HOLY AND PRECIOUS IN THIS VERY PRECARIOUS WORLD, IS GOING ON IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA? WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR AMERICAN FRIENDS?
ARE YOU HONESTLY TRYING TO TELL ME THAT THE CHECK OUT CLERK ACTUALLY SAID THAT?
Dear God please help the American People, it seems that they are in a LOT OF HELP!
W00T!!!
PLEASE STOP SAYING THAT HE NEEDS HILLARY AS VP TO WIN; BECAUSE HE DON'T. If this country wants to heal, then any one as his VP will do. I am not a hillary supporter but if he picks her, that is ok too.
However, he does not need her. If your not going to vote for him because of her not being on the ticket or because he's black or any other stupid reason then either vote for Mc bush and mess this country up even more or just stay home.
this is the botton line
Obama 08 12
AS YOU KNOW, IT HAS PAID OFF FOR THEM.
PEOPLE SEEM TO VOTE FOR WHO VALIDATES
THEIR OWN IGNORANCE, NOT FOR THOSE
THAT CAN BENEFIT THEM. AFTER THE LIES,
THE WAR, THE ECONOMY, ONE WOULD
LOGICALLY CONCLUDE THAT MCCONFUSED
WOULDN'T GET HIS OWN MOTHER'S VOTE.
THERE IS A SEGMENT OF AMERICANS THAT ARE
IGNORANT BY DESIGN, MO WAY AROUND IT.
I'm glad he's hitting back – Republicans are trying to define Obama as some sort of cartoon character. He needs to give as good as he'll certainly be getting. It's that simple.
Most of America knows about the need to properly maintain your vehicle tires ie; under inflated roll-overs etc. etc.. It is a certainty that keeping your vehicle tires inflated is NOT yourhat he main thrust
I totally agree with everyone, especially Independent Latina for Obama. The reason George Bush was elected to two terms is because of Karl Rove's masterful playing upon fear based in ignorance. The scene described of the cashier's insistence upon the veracity of the tabloid story has played out countless times across the nation. The media plays right along, creating "news stories" about things that aren't news at all. CNN and the rest of the responsible media need to completely stop reporting on non-issues such as whether the Senator wears a lapel pin, etc. It only provides fodder for those who wish to remain uninformed about real issues. I cannot abide the choice of the person to govern this nation being based upon such idiocy.
It is in the interest of business to keep the customer ignorant so that they blithely continue to consume. Senator Obama's recommendation while seemingly trivial actually speaks volumes. Ours is a culture of consumerism, not conservation. Folks have the idea that it is their God given right to have as much stuff (crap) as they want irregardless of the needs of others or the cost, not measured in legal tender, to society or the planet. We hear GM, Ford, etc. bewailing huge deficits...well, d'uh! Only idiots who listened to George and his oil buddies and Madison Avenue for the last 20 years could not see this coming! Of course before he leaves office (only 168 days) George will probably try to push an auto maker bail out bill through Congress!
Sorry Senator Obama, I don't think they take pride in being ignorant.
Actually, "They don't realize just how UN-INFORMED they are"
They did not see it coming during the primary.
They will not see it coming now.
The Barack attack is here.
The train rolls on.
We will overcome the ignerent fools that keep us down.
The vote is black this year and the country will hear it.
After everything, I have decided not to vote. It upsets me to be placed into the position of giving Bush credit for at least standing for something. I don't like that Obama doesn't stand by his statements. On the other hand, I can't vote for McCain either. I wish there were different choices available.
You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. It is a known fact that properly inflated tires will save on fuel. It seems McCain thinks the public is stuck on stupid and I hope that they're not falling for his gimmicks.
obama wouldn't know truth if it hit him upside the head. This dog is a disgrace to the human race.
Good for you Obama. About time you strike back at these baseless and downright ridiculous accusations. Why are Republicans mocking something which could actually help save Americans on gas and money.
Republicans believe in the free market and they should be able to understand hat if cars are more fuel efficient then it will consume less gas thus reducing demand thus the prices should drop. So how is encouraging Americans to regularly check to see if their tires are inflated a bad thing?
CNN, this headline is inflammatory and misleading! Obama didn't say "Republicans" – he said "these guys," obviously referring to McCain's campaign and its attack dogs.
You can't blast one candidate one day and the other candidate the next and expect us to believe you're an objective news source. That isn't "objective" or "balanced" – it's just sensationalism.
Change the headline to reflect what Obama actually said.
The problem with Senator Obama's "tire inflation" statement was that he said that if we all inflated our tires properly, we would save as much oil as we can get if we drill....
This is another of his "misstatements" – another exaggeration – he was asked a serious question, and gave a dumb answer -
I happen to agree that we should all be smarter consumers (not drive the extra block, keep our tires properly inflated, etc. etc.) – However, I don't for a minute believe that will solve the problem... Nor, replace drilling as a part of the solution....
i think mccain should visit some energy experts, this is a simple qustion. how can we individauls help with energy then obama answer the right and truth answer but unfortunately mccain dont even knows about checking ur tyre can help us save energy just tell me mccain jugement.
IS THERE SOME WAY WE COULD STORE SOME OF THAT HOT AIR THAT COMES OUT OF McCAIN'S MOUTH. IT WOULD RUN A DOZEN CARS FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR.
Yes...
That is the way.
These ignorant racist redneck morons can not beat us.
Barack is not a man HE is a movement.
You can not stop what God has brought.
Retribution is at hand
BHO "Energy Plan is so similar to Carters it is scary. It fialed in 1980 -1988 (repealed) and what do you think will happen if BHO is able to get it in? And now it is being reported that N. Pelosi is recommending Dem in congress to support off shore drilling if it will help "get them reelected" . This is no bull Check out Politico.com. Dirty rotten represenatives we have.
AMEN!
That's funny!! Last time I looked both sides hold the FIRST PLACE trophy for being Ignorant. We always act or look like we got somthing solved. Guess what Folks. The change, you all are asking for, is like when Bush ran in 2000. I'm better than you. I will do a better job. LookAT THE MESS WE ARE IN NOW, FOR THAT EXACT THOUGHT THEN. YOU GUYS THOUGHT HE WAS GOD- HE WASN'T. DOING IT AGAIN?uh!!
Shoddy Journalism CNN...your headline here makes it look like Obama said "Republicans take pride in being ignorant." That's not what he said at all. He was strictly addressing his attackers, not all Republicans.
oh my goodness
these old republicans are really acting like choldren
naking up stupid stories
dont really care thou
OBAMA 08,12
I bet McCain's tire gauges were made in China. Somebody should look.
