Obama teases McCain on drilling

Obama teased McCain on drilling Tuesday.
Obama teased McCain on drilling Tuesday.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (CNN) –- Barack Obama continued to slam John McCain’s energy policy Tuesday, attacking his opponent’s focus on oil drilling and mocking his Monday comments that “we need to drill here, and we need to drill now.”

Watch: Obama teases McCain

“Instead of offering a real plan to lower gas prices, the only energy plan that he's really promoting is more drilling,” Obama told supporters at a town hall meeting in Ohio, on the second day of a week of energy-themed events. “That's what he talked about yesterday. I want to drill here. I want to drill now. I don't know where he was standing. I think he was in a building somewhere.”

CNN Election Center: Where do the candidates stand on energy policy?

“This plan will not lower prices today, it won't lower prices during the next administration,” Obama continued. “The truth is we wouldn't see a drop of oil from John McCain's plan for at least seven years.”

Though Obama supported last week’s proposed “Gang of Ten” bi-partisan energy plan that includes an element of off-shore drilling, the Illinois senator has continued to rail against it and McCain and his campaign have been sure to remind voters. A recent CNN/Opinon research poll showed 69 percent of Americans support off-shore drilling.

The McCain campaign quickly fired back. “While Americans are hurting, Barack Obama is opposed to off-shore drilling, and is also opposed to admitting that he voted for the same corporate giveaways for Big Oil that he’s campaigning against today,” wrote McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds. “It underscores that Barack Obama isn’t being straightforward with voters and has the bad judgment Americans can’t afford right now.”

Obama outlined the energy proposals he put forward in a major speech Monday, including the ambitious goal of eliminating imports of oil from the Middle East and Venezuela within ten years.

“I know that there's going to be all kinds of discussion,” said Obama. “John McCain wants to talk about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. That's his idea of a really relevant campaign. But I don't have time to deal with that mess.”

“We can watch helplessly as the price of gas rises and falls because of some foreign crisis we've got no control over," he added, "and uncover every single barrel of oil buried beneath John McCain's feet only to realize we don't have enough for a few years much less for a century.”

    a majority of you belive the hype and are so fooled, Obama is clueless and thinks his fancy and flashy car salesman speeches can motivate everyone. That is true if your uneducated and cant do your own research. Just watch as Barrak Hussien Obama changes his stance on everything just to try to win over voters. Obama thinks the goverment is for supporting people, and I am tired of my taxes supporting people who chose to make bad decisions. People need to be accountable for the actions and responsible for the decisions they make. Obama has voted for taxes in favor of oil companies, he supports raising taxes. Obama supports Ethanol 85 which is a joke, it takes more money to make e85 than regular gas, but how will they make it cheaper, by using tax money. I am sick of all the side shows which normal america falls for. People need to realize this country, and our "system" is not broke, people are breaking the system. BEFOR WE CAN FIX ANYTHING OUTSIDE OF OUR BORDERS WE MUST FIX OURSELVES. REMBER THOSE QUOTES LONG AGO, WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR YOU COUNTRY, WHAT CAN YOUR COUNTRY DO FOR YOU. Well we are beating the hell out of that one. How about what can you do for youself. We are in a world of hurt. If we keep blaming everything else.

    SIGH...What's with all the Bring Billary back comments?? HELLO FOLKS! She is not the candidate! Furthermore she is BEHIND the selected candidate. I'm sure Hillary is ashamed she had this type of affect on you. Even if you write her in, it means NOTHING! It may even be understood as a vote for the democratic candidate. Certainly at best you should realize that it takes away from the democrat and gives the Repuks a chance of winning. Let it go, hold your nose if you feel that strongly, and vote for your interestes (especially women) and against the status quo.

    How do you support something and then rail against it the next week? Obama has really confused me on this one. :-/

    BARACK OBAMA IS AN IDIOT! I WAS A HILLARY SUPPORTER AND HAVE TRIED TO GIVE THE MAN THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT, BUT HE HASN'T EARNED MY TRUST OR RESPECT. I'M TIRED OF HIM AND HIS CAMPAIGN PLAYING RACIAL POLITICS, AND THEN WHEN A CRITICISM IS LODGED AGAINST HIM, HE AND THE CAMPAIGN SCREAM "RACISM!" FRANKLY, MOST AMERICANS COULD CARE LESS IF YOU ARE OF AFRICAN DESCENT. WE COULD CARE LESS THAT YOUR MIDDLE NAME IS "HUSSEIN" AND THAT YOU HAVE SOME MUSLIM HERITAGE. ABSOLUTELY NONE OF THOSE THINGS BOTHER ME IN THE LEAST. WHAT BOTHERS ME IS YOUR ARROGANCE, YOUR SENSE OF ENTITLEMENT, LACK OF EXPERIENCE AND YOUR "I'M SO ABOVE THE FRAY ... SO ABOVE THIS POLITICS" ATTITUDE. THE FACT IS YOU ARE NO DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER POLITICIAN THAT WAS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE THE THINNEST RESUME OF THE ENTIRE LOT – BOTH REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRAT. THIS HILLARY DEMOCRAT IS VOTING FOR MCCAIN! ONE CONCERN I HAD ABOUT MCCAIN IS HIS PROLIFE POSITION, BUT LET'S FACE IT THE DEMOCRATIC LED SENATE WILL NOT ALLOW ROE V. WADE TO DIE WITH A NUT CONSERVATIVE JUSTICE. SO, ROE WILL BE SAFE AS LONG AS THERE IS A DEMOCRATIC SENATE. I MAY NOT ALWAYS AGREE WITH HIS POLITICS, BUT AT LEAST I TRUST HIM.

    I have been laughing at McCain for a long time now.
    McCain has no Plan for our Energy problems that he Bush and the rest of the GOP are responsible for which was kicked off by the BS war we are currently in! McCain thinks that the people of America are stupid, he thinks that he can keep putting buzz words out there and we will say “OK”

    Well Said Bill:

    George Bush has been in office for 7 1/2 years. The first six the economy was fine.
    A little over one year ago:
    1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
    2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
    3) the unemployment rate was 4.5%.
    4) the DOW JONES hit a record high–14,000 +
    5) American's were buying new cars, taking cruises, vacations o'seas, living large!…

    But American's wanted 'CHANGE'! So, in 2006 they voted in a Democratic Congress & yep–we got 'CHANGE' all right!…..
    1) Consumer confidence has plummeted ;
    2) Gasoline is now over $4 a gallon & climbing!;
    3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
    4) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $12 TRILLION DOLLARS & prices still dropping;
    5) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
    6) as I write, THE DOW is probing another low~~11,300–$2.5 TRILLION DOLLARS HAS EVAPORATED FROM THEIR STOCKS, BONDS & MUTUAL FUNDS INVESTMENT PORTFOLIOS!

    Mccain has been in Washington for 25 years and Mccain is part of our Oil problems. Mccain is in the pocket of Big Oil that is why Mccain did nothing. Elect Mccain another Big Oil man and this country will be in a bigger mess. We need a new direction and new policies and the only way this can happen we must elect Obama as the next President becasue if not we will be sorry just like we are sorry that Bush was elected as President. We can'nt repeat a mistake over American people. We have to be smarter this time and tell our selves not this time!

    Obama is an IDIOT and a LIAR.

    Obama only wants to conserve, use alternative fuels, and inflate our tires. All of which need to be done, but come up GROSSLY short of giving us energy independance.

    McCain wants to;
    1)..Drill here, Drill now
    2)..conserve
    3)..expand the use of alternative fuels
    4)..wind power
    5)..Nuclear power
    6)..Coal power
    7)..Drilling off shore (why not the Chinese are within 60 miles of miami)
    8)..Drill in ANWR on a spot of land the size of a postage stamp on a basket ball court.
    9)..others

    It sounds to me that McCain is the VISIONARY on engery and that Obama is LEFT in the dust.

    Drill here, Drill now and create American jobs and security.

    It is time that the American people understand and accept reality.Oil has been cheap here while it has been expensive elsewhere.US has been able to set the price.But with the changing economy and the drop in the value of dollar oil is not going to be available for a bargain.We had our good days unfairly so as 3% of the world population we were cosuming 20 % of the world production for a song.Our economy has been destroyed by the war ,there are no two opinions about that.We have to be real, the damage is irreparable and we have to change our ways like the "mortals" in Europe and third world countries do.Be more aware of what we can do do to conserve.Most of us do not pay attention to tyre pressure or tune up or even oil change!But it can save us in fuel in a year what we can get from offshore drilling in 4 years.Which is easier?Think about the havoc on environment the offshore drilling is going to cause.One does not need to be democrat to have some common sense.McCain should be ashamed of playing plotics with this tyre pressure idea.He touts nuclear energy without explaing what safeguards we have in place.Already in the medical field there is growing concern about the unneccessary radiation and efforts are on the way to eduacte doctors to reduce the radiation exposure which is turning out be a monstrous problem. Sometimes seriousproblems have simple solutions like inflating tyres,but one has to have an open mind. Some solutions can end up creating more havoc than the original problem itself!Mcain has been demonstrating not that he has no good ideas,but has been promoting poulist ideas which will be harmful in the long run.

    @Janice

    This needs to be posted again!

    "In stumping Tuesday in this key battleground state, Obama sought to link the troubled economy with Republican policies and offer his own energy plan in contrast. He has tried to cast McCain as more concerned about oil company profits and drilling than an overall energy strategy.

    However, Obama himself voted for a 2005 energy bill backed by Bush that included billions in subsidies for oil and natural gas production, a measure Cheney played a major role in developing. McCain opposed the bill on grounds it included billions in unnecessary tax breaks for the oil industry."

    Sorry Obamabots – he is the same ole same ole

    McCain jokes that inflating tires is such a small step and that is all Obama is offering. Properly inflated tires would not save much oil McCain chortals yet it is equal to what off shore drilling would provide. So is McCain mocking his own plan when he mocks Obama's? Plus tire inflation can happen now and with little cost. Perhaps McCain could sugest something bolder, like attacking Iran, they have lots of oil, just like Iraq.

    artNYC said, "Interesting… I guess Obama's idea of selling oil from the reserve is a better one. Consider this, there's only about 3 and half days of supply in the reserve. Once he depletes that, what does Obama intend to do?

    I love these campaign rhetorics, they go very well with uninformed voters that worship Obama like he's the second coming."

    talk about uninformed! LMAO. you think he would sell everything in SPR!? not even BUSH is stupid enough to do that! he said 70 million barrels which is about 10% of the SPR. he supports LIMITED drilling and an aggressive alternative/renewable energy. and McSHAME?! all he says is DRILL DRILL DRILL. you think thats a good plan for our country!? LMAO do some research before you post, boy. will the uninformed voter (ArtNYC) please stand up!?

    Do any of you people read policy statements or anything other than quick talking points from conservative websites before you go spouting nonsense about Obama?

    I sit here in awe and wonder at the level of stupidity and misinformation bandied about on these blogs. If you want to be stupid and vote based only on a talking point, that's fine, but keep your opinions to yourselves. If you truly understand the positions about which you speak and still have your opinions and can back them up, then please feel free to share.

    And Still for Hill, you're so very tiresome and predictable. Can you give it a rest?
