Obama teases McCain on drilling

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (CNN) –- Barack Obama continued to slam John McCain’s energy policy Tuesday, attacking his opponent’s focus on oil drilling and mocking his Monday comments that “we need to drill here, and we need to drill now.”

Watch: Obama teases McCain

“Instead of offering a real plan to lower gas prices, the only energy plan that he's really promoting is more drilling,” Obama told supporters at a town hall meeting in Ohio, on the second day of a week of energy-themed events. “That's what he talked about yesterday. I want to drill here. I want to drill now. I don't know where he was standing. I think he was in a building somewhere.”

CNN Election Center: Where do the candidates stand on energy policy?

“This plan will not lower prices today, it won't lower prices during the next administration,” Obama continued. “The truth is we wouldn't see a drop of oil from John McCain's plan for at least seven years.”

Though Obama supported last week’s proposed “Gang of Ten” bi-partisan energy plan that includes an element of off-shore drilling, the Illinois senator has continued to rail against it and McCain and his campaign have been sure to remind voters. A recent CNN/Opinon research poll showed 69 percent of Americans support off-shore drilling.

The McCain campaign quickly fired back. “While Americans are hurting, Barack Obama is opposed to off-shore drilling, and is also opposed to admitting that he voted for the same corporate giveaways for Big Oil that he’s campaigning against today,” wrote McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds. “It underscores that Barack Obama isn’t being straightforward with voters and has the bad judgment Americans can’t afford right now.”

Obama outlined the energy proposals he put forward in a major speech Monday, including the ambitious goal of eliminating imports of oil from the Middle East and Venezuela within ten years.

“I know that there's going to be all kinds of discussion,” said Obama. “John McCain wants to talk about Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. That's his idea of a really relevant campaign. But I don't have time to deal with that mess.”

“We can watch helplessly as the price of gas rises and falls because of some foreign crisis we've got no control over," he added, "and uncover every single barrel of oil buried beneath John McCain's feet only to realize we don't have enough for a few years much less for a century.”

With 50 MILLION ACERS to drill on do you really feel that the big oil companies needs more to find oil. How dumb to you have to be before you see this is a game that the repub. right is playing on America. We have no energy plan so lets tell America that to get out of high gas prices we need to drill offshore. This is not going to lower prices.

Indeed, Time magazine writes that Obama is correct here. "But who's really out of touch? The Bush Administration estimates that expanded offshore drilling could increase oil production by 200,000 bbl. per day by 2030. We use about 20 million bbl. per day, so that would meet about 1% of our demand two decades from now. Meanwhile, efficiency experts say that keeping tires inflated can improve gas mileage 3%, and regular maintenance can add another 4%. Many drivers already follow their advice, but if everyone did, we could immediately reduce demand several percentage points. In other words: Obama is right."

hahaha, you Obama supporters are so gullible. You'll believe anything he says. He says he's going to change the world but he can't even tell you how he's going to do it. Then, when he finally does come up with a policy, like for our energy crisis, it sounds suspiciously like what McCain has been saying all along. Hmmmm.

If you look in the mirror you’ll see gullible written on your forehead.

The four reasons given why opening up more off shore drilling makes no sense:
    1) The oil companies already have the leases to over 60million acres of land that they are not utilizing
    2) Expanding off shore drilling will not lead to a drop of usable oil for at least ten years
    3) When it is produced from this newly drilled land, it will likely go on the global market...i.e. it does not solely increase our oil supply
    4) It would lead to a very small amount of increased supply in regards to our total oil demand

These points are agreed upon by nearly all of today's energy experts, as well as Bush's own energy policy advisors. I have yet to hear McCain or anyone involved in his campaign debunk any of these facts

Who do you think will pay for a windfall tax on oil companies, We the consumer, easy for them to recover any tax placed upon them. We need oil, oil is not just used in gasoline, but in many of the products you use every day, even when you are not driving car. The trucking interest is transporting all of your food what will they do if prices go higher which is possible. It will take a long ext. cord to get your food to your table.

Sorry America – face it – no matter what it is going to hurt for the couple of years. Here is what should be done. Lift all the bans on drilling, tell the oil companies go find the rest and find it now, get every last drop – use it all, finish it. Quick and dirty. At the same time, tell them they have to develop alternative energy – give them the rights, let them keep the patents etc. Then it will finally end. We (America) will own the future energy producing technologies, keep the money at home. While the environment may hurt for a while, we can clean it up – it will give jobs to environmentalists. We will then be free – no longer dependent on oil (it will all be used up), the Middle East and actually anything else that happens outside our borders will become irrelevant. No need to police the world any more, no need to get to oil supp;ying countries or to overthrow dictators. Valenzuela – who will care any more? – let them be as anti American as they want. We need to grab the renwable energy technology now and finish off all the oil to finally force the issue. Of course, the question is, will Americans suffer up front for the benefit of the future, or will we continue to only worry about what can be done for us todday?

Do the vast majority of people leaving comments even read the entire article, listen to and watch the videos included in the article? It sure seem like a lot of you just pick one thing you don't like and pounce on that one thing. There is not ONE answer to America's problems. Hello.

Why let any politician have the power to tell you how rotten the world is, or how rotten it will be if you don't vote a certain way. Vote, then make the best of it, quit whinning all the time, and dont believe the news. They have an agenda....they are people
