Poll of polls: Obama's edge over McCain grows slightly

The latest CNN poll of polls show Obama having a slight lead.
The latest CNN poll of polls show Obama having a slight lead.

(CNN) – Barack Obama is holding onto a slim edge over John McCain, the latest CNN Poll of Polls suggests.

CNN Election Center: View the latest state polls

After several days of tough new ads from McCain’s campaign, the presumptive Democratic nominee holds a 4-point advantage over the presumptive Republican nominee in CNN's average of national polls, up slightly from the 3-point margin he held on Friday.

A week ago, he led McCain by a six-point margin, a reflection of traditionally volatile summer polling.

The poll of polls includes the latest Gallup daily tracking poll, conducted August 2-4, that gave Obama a 4-point advantage. Late last week, the same poll showed the two candidates tied at 44 percent.

“The Democrats appear to have blunted any momentum Sen. McCain gained from last week’s ad associating Sen. Obama with Britney Spears and Paris Hilton,” noted CNN Senior Political Researcher Alan Silverleib. “Once again, we are seeing that Obama has a small but durable edge over McCain. It is up to McCain to find a way to change the fundamental dynamics of this campaign.”

In addition to the Gallup daily tracking poll, the CNN poll of polls also included a USA Today/Gallup survey conducted July 25-27 and a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation conducted July 27-29. The CNN poll of polls does not have a margin of error.

politics, gotta love em....FACTS ARE: unless WE, the people, walk our children 4 blocks to school instead of driving, unless WE stop driving out for fast food every day, unless WE stop being the world's most spoiled people, unless WE THE PEOPLE change our own habits, prices on everything will continue to kill our wallets, kill our lives, and kill our planet. NO politician or government entity can solve our personal habits problem...CONSUME LESS, whether it be gasoline, big cars, obesity, heath care, or housing...WE did it to ourselves and WE have to change our own habits or else !!

Frankie: If John Kerry is a "Trader" (sic) for being wounded while fighting in Vietnam, what do you call draft-dodgers like Bush and Cheney who sent more than 4,000 troops to their deaths based on a lie? The Republican party counts on dumb people (who can't even use the English Language properly) to keep themselves in office while they steal you blind.

I'll vote for the guy that knows how to use a computer. McCain can't even send an e-mail. How can someone claim to be in touch with today's realities, when they can't even do that ??

We as Americans should do what we can to elect another President that the world hates! It suits us well to know that the rest of the world wants us gone! Obama stirs up Europe showing the first glimpse of hope coming our way in a very long time, and the GOP uses it against him. And to top it off people that read these blogs fall for it.

Some of you haters really need to learn to spell...as if your ignorance isn't obvious enough as evidenced by your spiteful comments. To NeverObama–it's spelled "schmuck", you should know, you being one and all, with such hateful posts. With Hillary's help or not, Obama is the next POTUS.

CNN you are a politically controlled network. Too much opposition to your chosen candidate or negative remarks about your network are purged. You use selective information in your "reporting".

  21. Obama supporter: Bipartisan Intelligence in Gov't

McCain obviously wants his wife to be a celebrity. He offered her up to try out for the bare breast contest when he attended the veterans bike rally. One can only imagine the outrage if Obama, who would never say anything like that about his wife, said anything near this.

How so called PUMA women can vote for this sexist man is beyond comprehension.

McCain is programmed like a robot and always reading from scripts like his other half, George Bush. The only words he knows how to pronounce these days are Surge, Surge, Surge; Drill, Drill, Drill now. That's all. He cannot articulate any other issues facing the American people. McSame is too old to be our next presidnet, period.

    Dem:

The CNN Poll of Polls does not have a margin of error. So I was wondering where you got the 4-6% margin of error number. Also, the latest AP poll that ended yesterday has Obama up by 6%. Now that poll has a margin of error of 3%. We all know that although the current polls do not reflect a true picture of what will occur in November, it does appear to remain close. But here is the kicker for Mccain. No matter what he does he may gain or lose a point or two here and there. But he cannot get above the low to mid 40s and cannot overtake Obama in a majority of the polls. This is most likely the way it will remain with Obama edging McCain out by 4 to 8 percentage points in those critical States to put Obama over the top of the needed electoral votes.
