STURGIS, South Dakota (CNN) – Standing on the main stage at a world famous motorcycle rally in rural South Dakota on Monday, John McCain looked out on a sea of denim-wearing bikers and told them he enjoyed their company much more than that of the 200,000 Germans who turned out to see Barack Obama last month.

Watch: McCain addresses the crowd at Sturgis

“As you may know,” he told the tens of thousands gathered at the 68th annual Sturgis Rally at Buffalo Chip campground, “not long ago, a couple of hundred thousand Berliners made a lot of noise for my opponent. I’ll take the roar of fifty thousand Harleys any day.”

Bikers in the crowd, who had arrived from around the country to partake in the massive outdoor party, revved their engines numerous times in support of the presumptive GOP nominee. McCain said it was music to his ears.

“This is my first time here,” he said, “but I recognize that sound. It’s the sound of freedom.”

If McCain seemed more energized than usual, it might have been because the rally was one the campaign’s most colorful (and noisy) events in recent months. He even purchased four commemorative t-shirts.

As the senator made his way through a sea of motorcycle enthusiasts, shaking hands with the many veterans in attendance and accompanied by his wife Cindy and Sen. John Thune, he was surrounded by scores of beer drinking men and scantily clad women, many of whom were as thrilled to see the war hero candidate as they were to watch Kid Rock perform later in the evening.

If there were any Obama supporters to be found in the vast Buffalo Chip campground, they kept quiet.

Indeed, McCain felt so comfortable at the event that he even volunteered his wife for the rally’s traditional beauty pageant, an infamously debauched event that’s been known to feature topless women.

“I encouraged Cindy to compete,” McCain said to cheers. “I told her with a little luck she could be the only woman ever to serve as first lady and Miss Buffalo Chip.”

Hardly, Obama wants to disarm them, make them ride eletric motorcycles, sip lattes and wear dockers and polo shirts!!! Not to mention tax them to death!

I think most bikers would vote McCain…

Dianne   August 5th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Nice to see how respectful McCain is of his wife, offering her up for a topless biker "beauty contest". At least it is consistent with his statement to her in front of reporters that he considers Cindy a "trollop" and a "c**t".

What a great candidate for American women–a guy who disrespects (and in the case of his first wife, discards) us. Kind of like that oh-so-hilarious rape "joke" McCain likes to tell on the trail.

Lie back and enjoy it, girls, this is what we would get with a McCain presidency.

Ms. Buffalo Chip is such an appropriate name for McCain's wife.

Peter (CA)   August 5th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

"Sound of freedom"???? I hope he is kidding.

So, where exactly is the substance in this man? His whole campaign appears to be about deriding Obama. But, he has no decent ideas of his own.

Did you see where oil analysts support Obama's plan to use some of the Strategic Reserve as a credible means to bring the prices down as we work on alternate sources. The Republicans refused to vote for it…Why is that? Maybe because it's not the "drill, drill, drill" mentality their friends in Big Oil want.

How can any woman vote for this sexiat man and how can any woman aspiring to being First Lady stand there and take? These two in the White House will put women's issues back a generation.

In a 1986 Tucson Citizen article recounting a joke about rape told by Sen. McCain. Speaking to the National League of Cities and Towns in Washington, DC, McCain while campaigning for senate allegedly said:

Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, “Where is that marvelous ape?”

"2. A McCain TV spot falsely insinuates that Obama canceled his visit because "the Pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras."

This one is actually TRUE

and on "5. A McCain TV ad says Obama "voted against funding our troops." He did, once. Every other time he voted in favor."

Actually Obama voted against funding our troops on at least 5 different occasionx.

Who are all of these idiots that don't know that cindy released her tax returns in april, and got an extension until october to finish her 2007 filing? Is that intentional ignorance, or are you blatantly lying?

and for all of you criticizing people who drive harleys — most of those people are professionals, likely in a different tax bracket than you. And if by your logic being supported by "redneck bikers" makes mccain a redneck, then because Obama is supported by militant black leaders, rappers and drug dealers that makes him the same? Right. I can't believe some of you are allowed to vote.

Dan   August 5th, 2008 12:25 pm ET

I love the fact that John McCain is alienating our allies in Europe with his repeated comments dismissing the turnout Obama had there. Yes, Barack Obama is extremely popular with people around the world. Since when did that become a negative quality of a candidate for the presidency?

Talk about arrogance! McCain wants to compare his appearance at an event that would have otherwise taken place (and for reasons totally unrelated to John McCain) and 200,000 people coming to see Obama.

And yet, they are (effectively, I'm afraid) painting OBAMA as the arrogant one!

fair and balanced   August 5th, 2008 12:10 pm ET

BOTH candidates have made some change, no debating that. My conern is that John McCain, went completely opposite to have previous stance on offshore drilling and immigration. The fact he mentioned the troop increase first is to his credit and he is sticking to having troops finish the war in Iraq.

On the other side, Barack has changed his views as well but says he tends to say that he is willing give something to get something. This would mean that his position on drilling and talking with Iran et al, can still happen to the chagrin of many of us. To his credit he is holding fast to getting the troops out quickly.

Washington is broken, so do we keep someone who has been there for 26 years to fix it? Or do we bring in the untested newbie, to see whate he can do. Hard decision, lets not go into this "party blind" but on who has the better plan and testicular fortitude to do what he promised.

McCain has 5 items in ONE WEEK on factcheck.org not counting ALL the others he has. (1 still needs to be added.)Have you ever mentioned any of these??
OK, I will:
1. A new McCain ad says he'll raise taxes on electricity (false).
2. A McCain TV spot falsely insinuates that Obama canceled his visit because "the Pentagon wouldn't allow him to bring cameras."
3. McCain Links Castro With Obama - The words used in the ad, however, don't represent Castro's full remarks about Obama.
4. McCain ad says Obama's the guy to thank for emptying our wallets at the filling station. We say that's ridiculous.
5. A McCain TV ad says Obama "voted against funding our troops." He did, once. Every other time he voted in favor.
They still need to add McCain saying he "fought for the recognition of Martin Luther King day in his state." He NEVER fought for it, in fact he voted AGAINST it 3 times!

Here in the South…THE RACE CARD IS PLAYED… 24/7. If McCain opponent was a Caucasian man (just being honest from the South) with the same political agenda as Obama, we would see a bigger lead in the polls for our democratic nominee. Just as the republicans believe, no matter what they do that is wrong, negative and down right wrong for the survival of 98% of the American people, some of here in the South will hold to our prejudice outlook. Instead of considering that we need a change, eight years and this is the out come, more have became poorer, but those in the present administration for the last eight years have became twice millionaires year after year. It sad to say but they would rather lose their homes, starve, no health care and have to walk just to elect another Bush into office.

By some of the remarks posted, I would gather that most of you have never been to Sturgis, or any other extremely large biker gathering. Politically, bikers are split between the opponents just as the American People are.

While you may think that Sturgis and other events are some low life gatherings, you are very incorrect. They are a mix of people and many of them would be very interested in hearing what McCain has to say. I am not a supporter of his, but I definitely would have listened to him speaking. And no, bikers would not have spit on him as one of you said. He would be treated the same as everyone else there.

You have to remember how much money is floating around at these events. Many many people will spend the 2300$ max donation on bike parts, gear, and some good old fashion frivolity. The people that go to these events have money. The bikes alone cost more than most peoples cars. If McCain can tap into that financial resource, he would be a fool not to.

Erin in Edmonds WA   August 5th, 2008 11:43 am ET

I'm not sure it was a crowd of people that were there for John McCain. Buffalo Chips attract flies–maybe that was the crowd his likely failing eyes were seeing.

Big Yawn, of course he would want stepford Cindy to show her goods in a beauty contest. He is well acquainted with exploitation and cheap dirt tricks that smack of intolerance.

Yesterday was Obama's birthday, and he was hard at work campaigning–and he also campaigns on weekends. John McCain takes a weekend off and then goes to a Buffalo Chip thingee with a bunch of bikers. If there were any "Hell's Angels" there, note to McCain, they are listed as a domestic terrorist organization.

Kerry in that other story was right, he is dangerous. He has not been in a high pressure situation since being a POW and look how that damaged him.

No media outlet is asking this question. With his POW experience and the fact that they broke him and he signed war crimes papers against the north vietnamese does that disqualify him from the presidency.

My god the man could snap in office. Is that what we want?!!

Same old empty words from Repubs - well "liberty", "freedom", "patriot" don't pay my bills, fill my gas tank or keep me safe. Yet, enough folk fall for it every time - WAKE UP AMERICA and ask yourself, did Bush do anything to make you're life better? The rich got richer, we embarked on colonialism (despite Bush's claims he wouldn't), he divided us, not united us ("uniter not divider" campaign pledge). Unless you are rich, the Repubs play you for a fool and you bite every time!

It amazes me that both candidates are not the answer to America's problems, both lie, both flip flop, but some how Obama is the new Jesus Christ to the World. Obama has racially divided this country, wants to push his socialist agenda to the American people and spit on George Washington, Ben Franklin, Thomas Moore, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adam's grave who all sacrificed to rid the tyranny of the British Government. If you all love socialism so much why don't you move to England.

R.I.F.   August 5th, 2008 11:40 am ET

I'm glad Obama didn't make that comment about Michelle competing in a nude event. The media would have started a 48 hour firestorm. McCain can say it and everyone thinks that it's "cute" and "part of who he is that makes people love him" . Seems like a double standard to me.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   August 5th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Remember, this is the same Senator McCain who flew into Baghdad and pronounced that he "walked the streets of Baghdad without fear " as his campaign was getting off the ground.

Yes, he walked the streets, because he had a platoon of crack Marines with him every step of the way.

I have a great idea for Captain Bravo - walk the streets of any inner city in this country; don't worry, they're all Americans, just like you!

First we had fearless, Jet-Pilot, and now we're getting fearless, Captain Bravo!

KL   August 5th, 2008 11:40 am ET

I agree with Amy in Texas.

CNN, you've lost your vision when it pertains to both candidates. I too have wanted to post a comment to some of your other articles, but you've closed them. You treat Senator O'Bama as if he's God…come on be fair and not so one-sided. We Americans all understand and know that the media is to the left, but when it pertains to reporting the facts and/or discussions with your viewers, try to be fair in the future or you'll begin to lose your audience. You preach over and over that your team is the best Political Team, well then prove it.

Pick Me! Pick Me!   August 5th, 2008 11:38 am ET

Why is it that the majority of McCain commercials are almost always false when relating to Obama and Obama's commericals are almost always on the mark?

Political fact check is the place to go to become truly educated about the candidates. See past the smoke and mirrors to the truth.

edw   August 5th, 2008 11:38 am ET

1. McCain supported the drilling moratorium; now he’s against it.
2. McCain strongly opposes a windfall-tax on oil company profits. Three weeks earlier, he was perfectly comfortable with the idea.
3. McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.
4. McCain defended “privatizing” Social Security. Now he says he’s against privatization (though he actually still supports it.)

To those of you complaining that McCain is pandering the bikers, I have this to say.

Better for McCain to pander to American bikers than to have Obama pander to a bunch of Europeans !!!

The more that Europeans like Obama, the less I do. Europeans are a bunch of Socialists and Obama is right there with them.

Just another reason NOT to vote for Obama.

This makes his hand in the game appear nothing out of the norm.

Wouldn't it be great if Mr. McCain who might be our next president started to engage the issues facing our country in an honest way instead of beating up on Berliners in order to win the elections.

Winning is not everything, and the democratic process of electing a president is too precious to be demeaned by cheap shots.

Oh my gosh! He's totally one of us! I want to have a beer with him and then watch *insert sport here* while eating barbeque and knitting American flags. Then we can wrap several of them around the Hummer that I hope to buy when drilling in a fraction of a percent of the world's oil preserves while coating Santa Barbara in oil again magically lowers gas to the level it was when Bush took office. Those were the days.

The basic moral of this is that John McCain was the opening act for Kid Rock. Wow. That is way more impressive than drawing 200,000 people to see you speak in Berlin. By the way, because of Obama, there are a lot of people around the world who are thinking highly of the U.S. again…they want to love this country. I love this country but it's so hard when we have done the things that we have done. Patriotism to me means rejecting the policies that are hurting this country.

I live in Chicago. The biker clubs here promote violence, murder, pornography and drug dealing. They are constantly being investigated by law enforcement. They have blown up buildings here in Chicago when they had their "biker wars." McCain and Cindy are really aboard the "low road express" if the are hanging out with bikers. And, what's with Cindy dressing like a biker "broad?" Is she one of them now?

Joe, Hell MI   August 5th, 2008 11:14 am ET

Must be a slow news cycle or the media understands that people can only take so many Obama puff pieces in a row.

Mary G   August 5th, 2008 11:13 am ET

The revving of a Harley engine is a sound of freedom??? Yeah, I suppose you could say that - if your entire message is to put the word "freedom" out there just as many times as you possibly can on any given day. Well, not any given day - I think Tuesday through Thursday are reserved for "surge", and Friday is set aside for "patriotism".

It doesn't always have to be about the 'sound' of freedom either. You can mix it up and talk about the 'smell' or the 'sight' of freedom too. How about this: "My friends, the smell of that apple pie reminds me of FREEDOM". Or, "My fellow Americans, you see that Mom over there, eating her slice of apple pie in the country she loves? When I see that, I see FREEDOM!". Just get those words out there. That's all that matters.

Andrew Dzeguze   August 5th, 2008 11:12 am ET

Hey Andy,

Obama had an opening act to keep folks entertained while waiting for his speech. That's a common practice in American politics, which you'd know if you were paying attention - both HRC and Obama used popular acts throughout their primaries, and there's a centuries old tradition of having some sort of entertainment entwined with political events. But its not like there was a street festival planned for that day and he just happened to show up to give a speech at it. The band, the beer, everything else in Berlin was there because Obama was going to be there - most of it the choice of individual German merchants trying to make a little cash off of this event.

By comparison, folks (mainly grungy white guys and their women) go to Sturgis every year to show off their bikes, get drunk and party. Its not generally viewed as a highly politically active event - unless there's a national helmet law on the table. Its also a rally with a lot of openly racist, xenophobic, homophobic and misogynistic attendees (see Ms. Buffalo Chip competition, open display of Confederate and Neo Nazi paraphenalia, etc.) . Sturgis is to bikers what Burning Man is to liberal freaks. In short, no one went to Sturgis thinking John McCain would be there, and probably only a very few based their decision on the presence of Kid Rock. They went to Sturgis to go to freakin' Sturgis, and John McCain happened to show up to pander to them.

See the difference? McCain goes to an event, Obama creates one.

The kind of things that go on at motorcycle rallies, especially this one, is not something I would celebrate as a vision of freedom from a nominee for the Presidency. Leave that to someone else. As a democrat, I wonder what his campaign committee was thinking. This is not a NASCAR event. Outside aspects of this rally give definition to the word sordid.

Obama brings forth crowds.

McCain looks for crowds, which is easy because all he has to do is not go to his scheduled speeches. It seems there are lots of people in places where he is not supposed to be.

I find it very disgusting that CNN closes the chance for comments on the John Kerry story calling McCain dangerous for America but all the other stories that are negative about John McCain, what do ya know they are still open for comment. Come on CNN get over your Obama crush and be fair, this is the most disgusting thing I've ever seen and you just lost a viewer. I'll get my news from the fair and balanced station FOX NEWS. Go McCain

While Cindy McCain is a lovely woman, I'm getting a little worried about the need for her to be at John McCain's side constantly. It's great to see husband and wife campaigning together, but she's always RIGHT NEXT to him. I think she's feeding him lines, serving as his memory or maybe ready to help him should he fall and he can't get up. He's losing it, and her presence is only more evidence of that.

Andy, the difference between the McCain and Obama event is: Kid Rock was the main attraction while Obama was the main attraction in the German event. This event wasn't organized by the McCain campaign. And I don't think 200k Germans will carry American flags to see a band.

Now a bikers rally McCain might, just might be able to lead
This country ( not only no but ,Oh hell no )

Amazing how the media writes that the 50k people were there to see Kid Rock and not McCain, but no mention that the 200k in Berlin were there to also see a band and not Obama.
Nope, no media bias there. Doesn't matter. McCain will be President of the United States come January. Obama could be President of Germany.

HEY STUPID,

The people gather there every year . Kid Rock and John McInsane are just there as guests this year. Next year there will be 50,000+ people. Will they show up for John McLame then?

come on Tony. You said "It's too bad that backers on BOTH sides can't see the situation for what it is" . After which I said to myself "wow a voice of reason, someone pragmatic" and then another corner of your mouth you start bashing Obama…Are you sure you are not McCain. McCain is this your first blog post ever…
Obviously no jokes on McCain yet , i think you told them all.

democracynow2008   August 5th, 2008 10:54 am ET

McCain did not have this crowd waiting for him to speak they would have been their regardless of his showing up.
When Senator Obama goes somewhere people are their to hear him speak .
I guess McCain cannot get anyone to listen to him so he needs to go to their party instead.
McCain is a loser and will be a loser in November
