Raymond Hunter Geisel is being held on charges that he threatened to assassinate Sen. Barack Obama.

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) — A man was being held in Florida on Thursday on charges he told classmates at a training seminar that he would kill Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama if he is elected, according to a law enforcement official and court documents.

The threats came just days before Obama was scheduled to visit Florida and were made by a person discovered to have ammunition, a handgun and other weapons, authorities said.

An affidavit filed by a Secret Service agent in U.S. District Court claims that Raymond Hunter Geisel, of Marathon, Florida, threatened to "kill, kidnap and cause bodily harm upon a major candidate for president of the United States, that is, Senator Barack Obama."

A search of Geisel's vehicle and a hotel room in Miami, where Geisel was attending a bail bondsman training class, found a 9-mm handgun, ammunition that included armor-piercing and rifle bullets, police-style emergency lights, body armor, a machete and two canisters of tear gas, among other military-style items, according to the document.

Agents say that classmates of Geisel reported that, between July 25-28, Geisel used a racial slur toward Obama and said "if he gets elected, I'll assassinate him myself."

A classmate said that, one day after class, she also heard Geisel say "that he hated George W. Bush and that he wanted to put a bullet in the president's head."

Obama made several campaign stops in Florida on Friday, a day before federal agents arrested Geisel at a Holiday Inn Express in Miami.

During an interview with the Secret Service, Geisel said he couldn't remember whether he threatened Obama and the president, but told agents that "if he wanted to kill Senator Obama he would simply shoot him with a sniper rifle."

He later said that comment was a joke, the agent said in the document.

Geisel also said he has post-traumatic stress disorder, which affects his memory, and had once checked himself into a psychiatric institution for treatment.

The affidavit, signed by Special Agent Charles R. Adie, said Geisel "generally provided no excuse" for why he had the weapons and other items — claiming that he collects some of them, that the handgun was for target practice during the bail bondsman course and that he uses the machete and a hatchet for cutting through brush in Maine, where he lived most of his life before moving to Florida in January.

On Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen T. Brown ordered that Geisel be held in jail until his trial, calling him a danger to the community and a risk to run away before his date in court.

The judge noted that Geisel lives on a sailboat, is unemployed and has no strong ties to the Florida area.

Geisel is scheduled to appear in court on August 18. If he has been officially indicted by then, he would enter a plea. If not, it would merely be a preliminary hearing on the charges.

I'm fairly sure this won't get past the CNN moderators, but I'll try anyway [CNN guys note: I regularly post as qrstuv on many blogs.]

Cathy above says: "Never on CNN’s blog but on many conservative blogs I have seen down right racism and hatred statement toward Obama. The statement were not because they disagreed with Obama’s position on the issues but only because he is black (and nothing more)."

Now I read the conservative blogs a bit myself, and I have never seen any of the blog owners or regulars write *anything* suggesting that they thought whites were superior to blacks.

I see it all the time that conservatives get accused of secretly harboring racist thoughts, which are supposedly the "real" reason for opposing some liberal policy or other.

Here's a fact that is likely unknown to CNN regulars: The conservativematch Web site has a set of questions that everyone answers. Among them is "All men are created equal. Do you agree or disagree?" I have looked at a lot of people's answers and saw "disagree" only ONE time.

informed voter in fl   August 7th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

So many of you bigots hate President Bush and didn't say a peep about this man threatening to kill our actual PRESIDENT, yet you jump on the bandwagon ande scream RACISM when he threatens Obama. This is the exact reason I tore up my democrat voter registration card and re-registered republican. Obama and his "supporters' have just played the race card to death and i'm sick of it. They tell us Hillary supporters to suck it up and realize she lost but then they go on to say that if Obama loses , then it will be Hillarys fault. What a bunch of idiots who have fallen in with this smooth talking race terrorist. Obama will lose and guess what…it will be no one's fault but Obama's and his foul, angry bunch of cult member followers.

War Crimes   August 7th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Killing someone is not the way to solve probems. Bush seems to think this and McCain is A Bush. If anyone needs a "bullet" it's Bush. "Bullet" meaning… this man needs to be charged for his crimes and locked away.

Dominique   August 7th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

This is not a laughing matter and I am so happy this person was arrested. Based on our history there is no reason to ever joke about killing a political figure.

Jim Bob Zeebo   August 7th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

How much you wanna bet this guy is a dues-paying NRA member?

Yeah, America, let's arm all the racist, rightwing, blackhelicopter-chasing wackjobs like this guy–THAT'LL make us all safer. Not.

RD   August 7th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

Jessie Jackson was so wrong to say what he did about his desire to do bodily harm to Senator Obama, but black on black threats as hateful as they are in no way can compare to the white on black threats. Let's not pretend that racial issues are not the elephant in the room in America. Bad enough that hateful things are posted online about regular Americans who aren't running for President over mundane things. These kind of threats have to be taken very seriously with all of our collective seething frustration and anger in many. God help us all and keep all of our elected officials safe and well.

Hey Nova…you're going fell pretty badly come Nov. 5 when the inexperienced, unelectable one not only wins the presidency but he does so by turning Nevada blue. We're extremely active in your state and are continuing to send volunteers from California (where Obama is up 25 points in the polls) to help out in the effort. McPain has NO ground game and we're registering Democrats at twice the pace of the Repugnantcans. Believe it. Nevada goes to Obama and so too does the White House.
Obama '08…YES WE CAN!

Idiot, ignorant, hateful extremist liberals always blaming right wing Americans, the white guy, Red Necks, Fox New, Rush Limbaugh, etc.

LOOK IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD…you have the likes of the Clintons who will stop at nothing to get/stay in power and the hateful Jesse Jackson who wanted to castrate Obama!!

Cling to Your Gun   August 7th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

Maybe Obama was right, that some folks "cling to their guns" to bring them comfort in a difficult situation.

Was Bill Clinton behind this? Another reason NOT to select Hillary as his running mate. She has something substantial to gain if Obama dies.

I guess that blows a hole in the theory that "Black people aren't subject to extreme racial hatred in America."

And for every racist red-neck they catch, there are thousands more. I'm white, so I know what is said behind closed doors.

And that's only the vocal, violent few. The rest of the racists make excuses not to vote for Obama, such as "he's elitist", "he's inexperienced", "he's muslim" ETC.

Dood   August 7th, 2008 8:15 pm ET

Just another reason not to vote for Obama.

We don't need this type of aggravation on a daily basis.

Chris   August 7th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

Hollowpoint: The original story was only a few sentences long. It didn't even mention the stash of weapons that the guy owned. Add that to the fact that Obama was actually campaigning in Florida when they arrested the guy. Bush was in Maine! He was not a credible threat to Bush. If CNN wanted to hide something, they wouldn't have linked to the affidavit. You will notice that now CNN has had time to expand the posting and it mentions Bush. I am guessing your name is a reference to your opinions. You certainly do make a hollow point.

As a Hillary supporter, frankly I CANNOT believe some of you actually think this has anything to do with her. I am a lifelong democrat and am not against Obama, but carefully weighing my options. I am horrified that this happened and certainly hope that nothing more occurs. However, some of you Obama supporters are really making me rethink my vote. Keep on bashing the Clintons and see what happens.

Good should prevail   August 7th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

One evil man (woman) can kill all the good in the world. Remember the comments of Mike Huckaby (about gun) and Hilary ( Robert Kennedy and his nomination in June.).
Some imply and some are outspoken. The implied ones should be locked up too.
This is why America should elect Obama as the next president of USA.
We lost so many good leaders already.
God keep Obama and his family safe and protected.

Carl   August 7th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

It's ashame that we live in a country where people can be so ignorant and racist to hold back progress and peace in the hope for a better country. It is my true hope that when Barack is elected, thing start to change for the better. In that way, Obama really does represent hope in my eyes.

Nobama   August 7th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

Killing some1 is absolutely ridiculous. But whatever happened to freedom of speech. He can talk all he likes, its not like he actually committed a crime. Also race relations have always been a soft topic in US. If obama comes to power it will be worse than they ever were. A man who uses race (obama) to scare folks should never run for president. Marching to hell with Mccain is a better option than living through a civil war which obama is trying to instigate.

Disgusted Citizen   August 7th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

The dark side of America again emerges. It all began back in the primaries, often provoked and exploited, however indirectly, by the Clintons and the Clinton campaign.

Of course she's not responsible for people thinking dark thoughts and taking dark actions. But in her position of influence, she made no effort to eliminate them.

It is sick that the threat to Barack's life is very real now and in the future. It's even more disturbing to realize that Hillary will actually be thrilled if Barack gets out of her way, however it happens.

Kirk   August 7th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

Let me get this straight a man makes a threat on another mans life and goes to jail and people are saying he should be locked up for life…. What I'm failing to understand here is how you people can be so ignorant to believe this kind of thing doesn't happen on a daily basis to people all over the country. In all those instances when reported to police they usually suggest filing for a restraining order. Now I know some of you are going to say this is different because he is a candidate for president of the United States But seriously lets think about it. That in itself would show that there are lives worth more then others which according to our constitution is not true. Just remember all men are created equal, if that were the case why should an incident such as this be treated any different then any normal everyday person. We are all people and deserve to be treated and protected the same. I am by no means condoning this mans actions for what he did. But seriously how long are we going to take these double standards for people of power. Every human life is worth protecting and saving. Why should some of us get these protections while others are left to fend for themselves.

To the Why isn't Jesse locked up too commenters above:

Joking about cuttin someone's manhood hood off, albeit in very poor taste, and making numerous threats and possessing a mini arsenal are two COMPLETELY different things!!!! If you can not grasp that…then may God expand your tiny minds.

Angi's mom   August 7th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Until this country takes mental health treatment seriously, there will be more of this. Our young men and women are returning home from war with post tramatic distress and other brain disorders and practically being ignored by the government. Add the untreated mentally ill already living on our streets. Plus the easy availability of weapons. We should not be surprised if this country has more potential terrorists in our back yard than in the evil-doer country-of-the-month.

For all you people comparing Jesse Jackson's statements to this nutjob, how about asking if Jackson had any armor piercing bullets or underwent psychiatric help for being emotionally or physically abused. Not to mention the tear gas, the body armor and any of the other items that would suggest he is a real threat. Come on and use your heads. While Jackson is an idiot and should be held accountable for his words (as they did with Imus), there is really no comparison.

Peter (CA)   August 7th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

As an Obama supporter, I would never stoop to make a joke about this guy being on Hillary's payroll. I would like all of my fellow Obama supporters and Democrats to not even make such jokes.

If you are looking to the root of this problem…look at where this stuff comes from. A violent society, complete disregard for human life, and a paranoid affliction for firearms. If you want to blame someone, blame the NRA.

Re:Nova from NV   August 7th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

You say he's unelectable, which speaks volumes to the fact the he's beating your candidate. In any othere presidential election a 5% lead would be considered huge. The new outfits as well as the Repugs want to make this race out to be close, when it's not and the margins will grom when you put Obama on stage with McFather Time and he can't stop stuttering and misremembering things.

DRS   August 7th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

OMG, this brings back those horrific memories of June, 1968, when our beloved candidate, Robert F. Kennedy, was gunned down before he even got to the convention. Did anyone say "gun control"? I wish the govt. would get real and see that anyone can obtain a gun and change the course of history. Sad.

Erika, KS   August 7th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Yes. It's sad. Human beings are evil. I don't think God can protect anyone. I don't know how God could have made such flawed humans.

Now, can you imagine how outraged lunatics like this guy would be with an Obama/Rice or Obama/Powel ticket? Too many red necks in this country. They will never elect two African Americans on a presidential ticket. He's already non-electability material. This should be a lesson for Obama. We'll see if he's actually paying attention to anything else but himself.

True…If McCain wins we will relive Regan Era all over again….I mean I know Regan is popular for many things but what not a lot of people know is that he introduced cocaine during the Crack Cocaine Era….One of his military leaders ( I forgot his name) was funding a private war in Nicaragua to over throw the government. The funny thing is that the Nicaraguan guy that was allowed to come sell guns and cocaine to the ghettos was given full citizenship not only to him but his entire family……
McCain may not agree with all this but he does support many Bush policies that we have seen just don't work….

I think Obama with his mistakes and all is a fresh new start for this country….and don't be so surprise that Obama is getting threats….you guys do know that he is the only candidate for President that has had secret service from the time he said he was running….Only people like Hilary has that…..THink about it.

I'm a bleeding heart liberal feminist. Therefore, I'm simply not voting for any man for president ever again. They just don't have a clue, and I won't perpetuate male domination of our country any longer. This world hasn't a chance in he&& of being peaceful with the men in charge.

Matt:

"Good Lord, the guy was joking!

People all over these blogs say worse (far worse) about Bush on a daily, if not hourly basis!!

You Obamaphiles take yourselves too seriously!!"

I'm sure that if your life were threatened, you'd take it as a joke as well, yes?

Dan   August 7th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Let this guy rot in jail. Nothing funny at all about this.

Lyndsey   August 7th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Obama has and will be in my prayers because of fools like this. The hate in this world astounds me at times and if (and hopefully when) Obama is president I pray he will be kept safe. He is a brave man with a beautiful family and I admire the risk he is taking to better our country. I have faith that there is more good than evil in this world and I also have faith in Obama and what he could do for this country!!

Veteran for Obama   August 7th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

This is not a joke as some suggest here on this board. You people have the same sick sense of humor as McCain. Shut up and go vote for him, but you are sick.

Matt, Minneapolis, MN   August 7th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

When saying McCain is to old and may die in office, just remember this guy. There are plenty of crazies out there with guns who are bigots. Do you think they'll like having a black president. I don't care who you are you have to at least realize the fact that Obama's at a higher chance of death than the average president. It's a sad fact that there are idiots out there but hearing all the people talk about McCain's age as an issue, they also need to realize bigotry is an issue.

Adolf Hitler   August 7th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Obama is the answer. What was the question?

SANITY IN NV   August 7th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

"If Obama wins, the country will come together as one. People will get excited about the future, other countries will begin to respect America again, America's respect in the world restored, race relations in the country will impove, new energy jobs will be created, American schools will start competing with China and India."

ROFLMAO!! Oh yeah, this little news story really proves just how the country will come together! You can't even get all of the Dimcrat Congress Members to support Brobama! And, what has he accomplished while in office? Seems that no one has ever been able to answer that question, since he has been in this little race of his. You just keep worshipping Hussein, and see what socialism is like. We do not need any more Bush people in the office, but even McCain is better than Hussein!

The only candidate to really care about this country's laws and citizens was Ron Paul! Too bad the media blocked him out, and most of you were too lazy to research his record (he actually has a record, unlike your Messiah, of representing America's best interest and Constitution!).

If you think Hussien is a good choice, then look at Chicago and the mess they are in. He can't even get the people in one state to "unite" in spirit! You really believe that he can "unite" the rest of the country? So sad!

Word from a middle-aged midwestern white woman to racists:

To judge a person by the color of their skin is simply not acceptable and I won't be polite company by allowing you to make your 'candid' remarks to me anymore. When you say something offensive, I'll respond so that you know that your words and attitude is NOT ok with me.

I'm tired of being polite just to keep the peace. If you want to be my friend, you will have to adjust the attitude accordingly. If you can't, I don't need you as a friend.

Be the Change that you want to see. :)

Punky   August 7th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Obama or McCain …neither one is right to be our President. They (as well as all the others in the past) will do and say whatever they want to in order to get elected. Since when have we had a president follow through with any single promise he made in order to get himself elected. Who the hell trusts any of them I am Democrat and I still have NO idea who I will vote for. I do not want to see anyone get hurt either but maybe if the candidates tried a little honesty the US wont be where they are today. The US citizens do not trust our government and if we knew all of it we would banish the government all together. Think about in the city where you live I bet yo have no idea of the political BS that takes place there. It does and it is happening. The government (everyone one of them) need to be let go.

Why didn't CNN state that President Bush was threatened also? Everywhere else, they mention in their headlines that Bush and Obama were both threatened.

The reality is that there are white supremacists out there, so to make a "joke" like that is crazy. They're definitely going to beef up security.

Joking about how Hillary is connected with this guy is really off base, and those who say such things should be ashamed to be Americans.

America is at a serious cross road in history.

If McCain wins, the country will continue its march to hell. Race relations will get worse, economy will get worse, China and India will emerge as superpowers with more money and influence.

If Obama wins, the country will come together as one. People will get excited about the future, other countries will begin to respect America again, America's respect in the world restored, race relations in the country will impove, new energy jobs will be created, American schools will start competing with China and India.

Terminator   August 7th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Lock him up and throw away, we don't people like him voting for any candidate. Everyman has a right, if he can't handle himself like a human being, then he doesn't have the intelligence to vote. HOW SAD. Pathetic!!!!

Hollowpoint   August 7th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

While he wasn't arrested for it, the racist nutjob also said that he'd like to put a bullet in Bush's head… yet CNN doesn't feel that was relevent enough to include on their blog story? The extra two sentences would've taken up too many bytes?

Or was it that CNN wanted to portray the nutjob in question as a "typical" right wing racist who wanted to kill Obama? Letting your partisan mask slip a bit are you, CNN?

Given the nature of this election, don't even try to make the excuse that it wasn't relevant, or that the story as presented doesn't create a false impression of the man arrested.

Roy   August 7th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

It is not all that far-fetched to believe redneck Americans like this or other neocon bullies who can not accept a man of color as President will try to kill Obama. Look what happened to Robert Kennedy, who, although not Black, was Catholic, liberal and hated by the Republicans and the mafia.

Henry Landis   August 7th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Any scum who would make such a threat, and calls it a joke should do his time in solitary, listening to a recording of himself. He can then laugh away his time while the rest of the world breathes a sigh of relief.

You are one sick puppy. If I understand your blog, you are suggesting that Barack Obama is being protected by the Devil's lieutenants because you believe that Sen. Obama is of the Devil.

I'm not sure if you are a racist, an insane Clinton or McCain supporter, or just a religious nut.

Whoever you are, I suggest you make an effort to come to know Barack Obama. His whole life has been devoted to others. Because he is greatly gifted, he presents a target to anyone in the public sector less gifted or intelligent. Certainly, I look forward to having a President whose intelligence will be a comfortable change from the past 7 years. I also look forward to his debates with John McCain, who in my opinion lacks sufficient insight to carry this nation forward in a difficult time.

Same with anyone that's been to counseling within 1-2 years for certain types of things.

The Obama Bots are crazier than this guy!!!

I appreciate some comments regarding a double-standard and Jesse Jackson. However, I encourage those of you who have written about a double-standard, as well as everyone who has commented, to read the full text of the Secret Service agent's affidavit.

Working even tangentially in the penal system Raymond Hunter Geisel should have known comments like his are not taken as jokes. Case in point, try using the word bomb in a joke with a TSA agent at the airport.

Geisel needs removal from mainstream society and psychiatric attention.

I'm not for Obama either, but I don't wish harm upon him…

HOWEVER

locking someone up for making a comment that he'd like to kill someone else, another American, is a little extreme….I'd say there are, maybe, 40 million people in the United States who at some point told someone they wish someone else was hurt or dead or both…I know I don't want my taxes going to pay for these peoples' food and entertainment in jail if they are not a REAL threat to anyone. I seriously doubt this pansy would try anything, honestly.
