Raymond Hunter Geisel is being held on charges that he threatened to assassinate Sen. Barack Obama.

MIAMI, Florida (CNN) - A man was being held in Florida on Thursday on charges he told classmates at a training seminar that he would kill Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama if he is elected, according to a law enforcement official and court documents.

The threats came just days before Obama was scheduled to visit Florida and were made by a person discovered to have ammunition, a handgun and other weapons, authorities said.

An affidavit filed by a Secret Service agent in U.S. District Court claims that Raymond Hunter Geisel, of Marathon, Florida, threatened to "kill, kidnap and cause bodily harm upon a major candidate for president of the United States, that is, Senator Barack Obama."

A search of Geisel's vehicle and a hotel room in Miami, where Geisel was attending a bail bondsman training class, found a 9-mm handgun, ammunition that included armor-piercing and rifle bullets, police-style emergency lights, body armor, a machete and two canisters of tear gas, among other military-style items, according to the document.

Agents say that classmates of Geisel reported that, between July 25-28, Geisel used a racial slur toward Obama and said "if he gets elected, I'll assassinate him myself."

A classmate said that, one day after class, she also heard Geisel say "that he hated George W. Bush and that he wanted to put a bullet in the president's head."

Obama made several campaign stops in Florida on Friday, a day before federal agents arrested Geisel at a Holiday Inn Express in Miami.

During an interview with the Secret Service, Geisel said he couldn't remember whether he threatened Obama and the president, but told agents that "if he wanted to kill Senator Obama he would simply shoot him with a sniper rifle."

He later said that comment was a joke, the agent said in the document.

Geisel also said he has post-traumatic stress disorder, which affects his memory, and had once checked himself into a psychiatric institution for treatment.

The affidavit, signed by Special Agent Charles R. Adie, said Geisel "generally provided no excuse" for why he had the weapons and other items - claiming that he collects some of them, that the handgun was for target practice during the bail bondsman course and that he uses the machete and a hatchet for cutting through brush in Maine, where he lived most of his life before moving to Florida in January.

On Thursday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen T. Brown ordered that Geisel be held in jail until his trial, calling him a danger to the community and a risk to run away before his date in court.

The judge noted that Geisel lives on a sailboat, is unemployed and has no strong ties to the Florida area.

Geisel is scheduled to appear in court on August 18. If he has been officially indicted by then, he would enter a plea. If not, it would merely be a preliminary hearing on the charges.

I'm fairly sure this won't get past the CNN moderators, but I'll try anyway [CNN guys note: I regularly post as qrstuv on many blogs.]

Cathy above says: "Never on CNN’s blog but on many conservative blogs I have seen down right racism and hatred statement toward Obama. The statement were not because they disagreed with Obama’s position on the issues but only because he is black (and nothing more)."

Now I read the conservative blogs a bit myself, and I have never seen any of the blog owners or regulars write *anything* suggesting that they thought whites were superior to blacks.

I see it all the time that conservatives get accused of secretly harboring racist thoughts, which are supposedly the "real" reason for opposing some liberal policy or other.

Here's a fact that is likely unknown to CNN regulars: The conservativematch Web site has a set of questions that everyone answers. Among them is "All men are created equal. Do you agree or disagree?" I have looked at a lot of people's answers and saw "disagree" only ONE time.

informed voter in fl   August 7th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

So many of you bigots hate President Bush and didn't say a peep about this man threatening to kill our actual PRESIDENT, yet you jump on the bandwagon ande scream RACISM when he threatens Obama. This is the exact reason I tore up my democrat voter registration card and re-registered republican. Obama and his "supporters' have just played the race card to death and i'm sick of it. They tell us Hillary supporters to suck it up and realize she lost but then they go on to say that if Obama loses , then it will be Hillarys fault. What a bunch of idiots who have fallen in with this smooth talking race terrorist. Obama will lose and guess what...it will be no one's fault but Obama's and his foul, angry bunch of cult member followers.

War Crimes   August 7th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Killing someone is not the way to solve probems. Bush seems to think this and McCain is A Bush. If anyone needs a "bullet" it's Bush. "Bullet" meaning... this man needs to be charged for his crimes and locked away.

Dominique   August 7th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

This is not a laughing matter and I am so happy this person was arrested. Based on our history there is no reason to ever joke about killing a political figure.

Jim Bob Zeebo   August 7th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

How much you wanna bet this guy is a dues-paying NRA member?

Yeah, America, let's arm all the racist, rightwing, blackhelicopter-chasing wackjobs like this guy–THAT'LL make us all safer. Not.

RD   August 7th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

Jessie Jackson was so wrong to say what he did about his desire to do bodily harm to Senator Obama, but black on black threats as hateful as they are in no way can compare to the white on black threats. Let's not pretend that racial issues are not the elephant in the room in America. Bad enough that hateful things are posted online about regular Americans who aren't running for President over mundane things. These kind of threats have to be taken very seriously with all of our collective seething frustration and anger in many. God help us all and keep all of our elected officials safe and well.

Hey Nova...you're going fell pretty badly come Nov. 5 when the inexperienced, unelectable one not only wins the presidency but he does so by turning Nevada blue. We're extremely active in your state and are continuing to send volunteers from California (where Obama is up 25 points in the polls) to help out in the effort. McPain has NO ground game and we're registering Democrats at twice the pace of the Repugnantcans. Believe it. Nevada goes to Obama and so too does the White House.
Obama '08...YES WE CAN!

Idiot, ignorant, hateful extremist liberals always blaming right wing Americans, the white guy, Red Necks, Fox New, Rush Limbaugh, etc.

LOOK IN YOUR OWN BACKYARD...you have the likes of the Clintons who will stop at nothing to get/stay in power and the hateful Jesse Jackson who wanted to castrate Obama!!

Cling to Your Gun   August 7th, 2008 8:20 pm ET

Maybe Obama was right, that some folks "cling to their guns" to bring them comfort in a difficult situation.

Was Bill Clinton behind this? Another reason NOT to select Hillary as his running mate. She has something substantial to gain if Obama dies.

I guess that blows a hole in the theory that "Black people aren't subject to extreme racial hatred in America."

And for every racist red-neck they catch, there are thousands more. I'm white, so I know what is said behind closed doors.

And that's only the vocal, violent few. The rest of the racists make excuses not to vote for Obama, such as "he's elitist", "he's inexperienced", "he's muslim" ETC.

Dood   August 7th, 2008 8:15 pm ET

Just another reason not to vote for Obama.

We don't need this type of aggravation on a daily basis.

Chris   August 7th, 2008 8:11 pm ET

Hollowpoint: The original story was only a few sentences long. It didn't even mention the stash of weapons that the guy owned. Add that to the fact that Obama was actually campaigning in Florida when they arrested the guy. Bush was in Maine! He was not a credible threat to Bush. If CNN wanted to hide something, they wouldn't have linked to the affidavit. You will notice that now CNN has had time to expand the posting and it mentions Bush. I am guessing your name is a reference to your opinions. You certainly do make a hollow point.

As a Hillary supporter, frankly I CANNOT believe some of you actually think this has anything to do with her. I am a lifelong democrat and am not against Obama, but carefully weighing my options. I am horrified that this happened and certainly hope that nothing more occurs. However, some of you Obama supporters are really making me rethink my vote. Keep on bashing the Clintons and see what happens.

Good should prevail   August 7th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

One evil man (woman) can kill all the good in the world. Remember the comments of Mike Huckaby (about gun) and Hilary ( Robert Kennedy and his nomination in June.).
Some imply and some are outspoken. The implied ones should be locked up too.
This is why America should elect Obama as the next president of USA.
We lost so many good leaders already.
God keep Obama and his family safe and protected.

Carl   August 7th, 2008 8:06 pm ET

It's ashame that we live in a country where people can be so ignorant and racist to hold back progress and peace in the hope for a better country. It is my true hope that when Barack is elected, thing start to change for the better. In that way, Obama really does represent hope in my eyes.

Nobama   August 7th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

Killing some1 is absolutely ridiculous. But whatever happened to freedom of speech. He can talk all he likes, its not like he actually committed a crime. Also race relations have always been a soft topic in US. If obama comes to power it will be worse than they ever were. A man who uses race (obama) to scare folks should never run for president. Marching to hell with Mccain is a better option than living through a civil war which obama is trying to instigate.

Disgusted Citizen   August 7th, 2008 8:04 pm ET

The dark side of America again emerges. It all began back in the primaries, often provoked and exploited, however indirectly, by the Clintons and the Clinton campaign.

Of course she's not responsible for people thinking dark thoughts and taking dark actions. But in her position of influence, she made no effort to eliminate them.

It is sick that the threat to Barack's life is very real now and in the future. It's even more disturbing to realize that Hillary will actually be thrilled if Barack gets out of her way, however it happens.

Kirk   August 7th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

Let me get this straight a man makes a threat on another mans life and goes to jail and people are saying he should be locked up for life.... What I'm failing to understand here is how you people can be so ignorant to believe this kind of thing doesn't happen on a daily basis to people all over the country. In all those instances when reported to police they usually suggest filing for a restraining order. Now I know some of you are going to say this is different because he is a candidate for president of the United States But seriously lets think about it. That in itself would show that there are lives worth more then others which according to our constitution is not true. Just remember all men are created equal, if that were the case why should an incident such as this be treated any different then any normal everyday person. We are all people and deserve to be treated and protected the same. I am by no means condoning this mans actions for what he did. But seriously how long are we going to take these double standards for people of power. Every human life is worth protecting and saving. Why should some of us get these protections while others are left to fend for themselves.

To the Why isn't Jesse locked up too commenters above:

Joking about cuttin someone's manhood hood off, albeit in very poor taste, and making numerous threats and possessing a mini arsenal are two COMPLETELY different things!!!! If you can not grasp that...then may God expand your tiny minds.

Angi's mom   August 7th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Until this country takes mental health treatment seriously, there will be more of this. Our young men and women are returning home from war with post tramatic distress and other brain disorders and practically being ignored by the government. Add the untreated mentally ill already living on our streets. Plus the easy availability of weapons. We should not be surprised if this country has more potential terrorists in our back yard than in the evil-doer country-of-the-month.

For all you people comparing Jesse Jackson's statements to this nutjob, how about asking if Jackson had any armor piercing bullets or underwent psychiatric help for being emotionally or physically abused. Not to mention the tear gas, the body armor and any of the other items that would suggest he is a real threat. Come on and use your heads. While Jackson is an idiot and should be held accountable for his words (as they did with Imus), there is really no comparison.

Peter (CA)   August 7th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

As an Obama supporter, I would never stoop to make a joke about this guy being on Hillary's payroll. I would like all of my fellow Obama supporters and Democrats to not even make such jokes.

If you are looking to the root of this problem...look at where this stuff comes from. A violent society, complete disregard for human life, and a paranoid affliction for firearms. If you want to blame someone, blame the NRA.

Re:Nova from NV   August 7th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

You say he's unelectable, which speaks volumes to the fact the he's beating your candidate. In any othere presidential election a 5% lead would be considered huge. The new outfits as well as the Repugs want to make this race out to be close, when it's not and the margins will grom when you put Obama on stage with McFather Time and he can't stop stuttering and misremembering things.

DRS   August 7th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

OMG, this brings back those horrific memories of June, 1968, when our beloved candidate, Robert F. Kennedy, was gunned down before he even got to the convention. Did anyone say "gun control"? I wish the govt. would get real and see that anyone can obtain a gun and change the course of history. Sad.

Erika, KS   August 7th, 2008 7:51 pm ET

Yes. It's sad. Human beings are evil. I don't think God can protect anyone. I don't know how God could have made such flawed humans.

Now, can you imagine how outraged lunatics like this guy would be with an Obama/Rice or Obama/Powel ticket? Too many red necks in this country. They will never elect two African Americans on a presidential ticket. He's already non-electability material. This should be a lesson for Obama. We'll see if he's actually paying attention to anything else but himself.

True...If McCain wins we will relive Regan Era all over again....I mean I know Regan is popular for many things but what not a lot of people know is that he introduced cocaine during the Crack Cocaine Era....One of his military leaders ( I forgot his name) was funding a private war in Nicaragua to over throw the government. The funny thing is that the Nicaraguan guy that was allowed to come sell guns and cocaine to the ghettos was given full citizenship not only to him but his entire family......
McCain may not agree with all this but he does support many Bush policies that we have seen just don't work....

I think Obama with his mistakes and all is a fresh new start for this country....and don't be so surprise that Obama is getting threats....you guys do know that he is the only candidate for President that has had secret service from the time he said he was running....Only people like Hilary has that.....THink about it.

I'm a bleeding heart liberal feminist. Therefore, I'm simply not voting for any man for president ever again. They just don't have a clue, and I won't perpetuate male domination of our country any longer. This world hasn't a chance in he&& of being peaceful with the men in charge.

Matt:

"Good Lord, the guy was joking!

People all over these blogs say worse (far worse) about Bush on a daily, if not hourly basis!!

You Obamaphiles take yourselves too seriously!!"

I'm sure that if your life were threatened, you'd take it as a joke as well, yes?

Dan   August 7th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Let this guy rot in jail. Nothing funny at all about this.

Lyndsey   August 7th, 2008 7:17 pm ET

Obama has and will be in my prayers because of fools like this. The hate in this world astounds me at times and if (and hopefully when) Obama is president I pray he will be kept safe. He is a brave man with a beautiful family and I admire the risk he is taking to better our country. I have faith that there is more good than evil in this world and I also have faith in Obama and what he could do for this country!!

Veteran for Obama   August 7th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

This is not a joke as some suggest here on this board. You people have the same sick sense of humor as McCain. Shut up and go vote for him, but you are sick.

Matt, Minneapolis, MN   August 7th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

When saying McCain is to old and may die in office, just remember this guy. There are plenty of crazies out there with guns who are bigots. Do you think they'll like having a black president. I don't care who you are you have to at least realize the fact that Obama's at a higher chance of death than the average president. It's a sad fact that there are idiots out there but hearing all the people talk about McCain's age as an issue, they also need to realize bigotry is an issue.

Adolf Hitler   August 7th, 2008 7:08 pm ET

Obama is the answer. What was the question?

SANITY IN NV   August 7th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

"If Obama wins, the country will come together as one. People will get excited about the future, other countries will begin to respect America again, America's respect in the world restored, race relations in the country will impove, new energy jobs will be created, American schools will start competing with China and India."

ROFLMAO!! Oh yeah, this little news story really proves just how the country will come together! You can't even get all of the Dimcrat Congress Members to support Brobama! And, what has he accomplished while in office? Seems that no one has ever been able to answer that question, since he has been in this little race of his. You just keep worshipping Hussein, and see what socialism is like. We do not need any more Bush people in the office, but even McCain is better than Hussein!

The only candidate to really care about this country's laws and citizens was Ron Paul! Too bad the media blocked him out, and most of you were too lazy to research his record (he actually has a record, unlike your Messiah, of representing America's best interest and Constitution!).

If you think Hussien is a good choice, then look at Chicago and the mess they are in. He can't even get the people in one state to "unite" in spirit! You really believe that he can "unite" the rest of the country? So sad!

Word from a middle-aged midwestern white woman to racists:

To judge a person by the color of their skin is simply not acceptable and I won't be polite company by allowing you to make your 'candid' remarks to me anymore. When you say something offensive, I'll respond so that you know that your words and attitude is NOT ok with me.

I'm tired of being polite just to keep the peace. If you want to be my friend, you will have to adjust the attitude accordingly. If you can't, I don't need you as a friend.

Be the Change that you want to see. :)

Punky   August 7th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Obama or McCain ...neither one is right to be our President. They (as well as all the others in the past) will do and say whatever they want to in order to get elected. Since when have we had a president follow through with any single promise he made in order to get himself elected. Who the hell trusts any of them I am Democrat and I still have NO idea who I will vote for. I do not want to see anyone get hurt either but maybe if the candidates tried a little honesty the US wont be where they are today. The US citizens do not trust our government and if we knew all of it we would banish the government all together. Think about in the city where you live I bet yo have no idea of the political BS that takes place there. It does and it is happening. The government (everyone one of them) need to be let go.

tina   August 7th, 2008 6:56 pm ET

Why didn't CNN state that President Bush was threatened also? Everywhere else, they mention in their headlines that Bush and Obama were both threatened.

The reality is that there are white supremacists out there, so to make a "joke" like that is crazy. They're definitely going to beef up security.

Joking about how Hillary is connected with this guy is really off base, and those who say such things should be ashamed to be Americans.

America is at a serious cross road in history.

If McCain wins, the country will continue its march to hell. Race relations will get worse, economy will get worse, China and India will emerge as superpowers with more money and influence.

If Obama wins, the country will come together as one. People will get excited about the future, other countries will begin to respect America again, America's respect in the world restored, race relations in the country will impove, new energy jobs will be created, American schools will start competing with China and India.

Terminator   August 7th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

Lock him up and throw away, we don't people like him voting for any candidate. Everyman has a right, if he can't handle himself like a human being, then he doesn't have the intelligence to vote. HOW SAD. Pathetic!!!!

Hollowpoint   August 7th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

While he wasn't arrested for it, the racist nutjob also said that he'd like to put a bullet in Bush's head... yet CNN doesn't feel that was relevent enough to include on their blog story? The extra two sentences would've taken up too many bytes?

Or was it that CNN wanted to portray the nutjob in question as a "typical" right wing racist who wanted to kill Obama? Letting your partisan mask slip a bit are you, CNN?

Given the nature of this election, don't even try to make the excuse that it wasn't relevant, or that the story as presented doesn't create a false impression of the man arrested.

Roy   August 7th, 2008 6:43 pm ET

It is not all that far-fetched to believe redneck Americans like this or other neocon bullies who can not accept a man of color as President will try to kill Obama. Look what happened to Robert Kennedy, who, although not Black, was Catholic, liberal and hated by the Republicans and the mafia.

Henry Landis   August 7th, 2008 6:42 pm ET

Any scum who would make such a threat, and calls it a joke should do his time in solitary, listening to a recording of himself. He can then laugh away his time while the rest of the world breathes a sigh of relief.

You are one sick puppy. If I understand your blog, you are suggesting that Barack Obama is being protected by the Devil's lieutenants because you believe that Sen. Obama is of the Devil.

I'm not sure if you are a racist, an insane Clinton or McCain supporter, or just a religious nut.

Whoever you are, I suggest you make an effort to come to know Barack Obama. His whole life has been devoted to others. Because he is greatly gifted, he presents a target to anyone in the public sector less gifted or intelligent. Certainly, I look forward to having a President whose intelligence will be a comfortable change from the past 7 years. I also look forward to his debates with John McCain, who in my opinion lacks sufficient insight to carry this nation forward in a difficult time.

Same with anyone that's been to counseling within 1-2 years for certain types of things.

The Obama Bots are crazier than this guy!!!

I am sure there are many, many more people sitting around and saying stuff like this all over the country. Maybe the government should detain all those who dare say anything naughty about the so-called messiah?

I appreciate some comments regarding a double-standard and Jesse Jackson. However, I encourage those of you who have written about a double-standard, as well as everyone who has commented, to read the full text of the Secret Service agent's affidavit.

Working even tangentially in the penal system Raymond Hunter Geisel should have known comments like his are not taken as jokes. Case in point, try using the word bomb in a joke with a TSA agent at the airport.

Geisel needs removal from mainstream society and psychiatric attention.

I'm not for Obama either, but I don't wish harm upon him...

HOWEVER

locking someone up for making a comment that he'd like to kill someone else, another American, is a little extreme....I'd say there are, maybe, 40 million people in the United States who at some point told someone they wish someone else was hurt or dead or both...I know I don't want my taxes going to pay for these peoples' food and entertainment in jail if they are not a REAL threat to anyone. I seriously doubt this pansy would try anything, honestly.

The hatred they have generated is almost impossible for me to believe, some of the vitriol coming from people for whom I have had the highest regard, until their twisted hate-filled rhetoric directed at a man who is for the most part gentlemanly and caring in his treatment of Hillary. Only the Annie Oakley comes to mind as something I wish he hadn't said, even though I shared his feelings or even had stronger feelings about her blatant appeal to the NRA during the Pennsylvania Primary.

bob in L.A.   August 7th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

I have a feeling this will not be the last one we hear about unfortunately.
If Obama's lead in the polls starts to surge, the recently silent members of the KKK or some other crazy group are just likely to say "no way" to a black man in the white house and make an attempt on him.
We can only hopethat does not happen and that today's security is smarter than these lunatics.

rocky   August 7th, 2008 6:03 pm ET

NELLIE B. CORTLAND,OH   August 7th, 2008 6:02 pm ET

B.Obama must be having a bad time in the polls he can't pull ahead.
But the way to incite the media into talking about him and this has happen over and over. You may be to bias to notice that when ever a competitor is ahead of him his office stirs the pot to get his name on top and more air time. I, have heard other people make similar comments.

Why weren't charges filed against Jesse Jackson, he threatened Obama? Could it be the color of his skin?

Joe   August 7th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

The bitterness and hatefulness I hear and read expressed about Obama and McCain is troubling to me.
The vilification of our political opponents may help rally the troops but may also incite some crazy person.
These are two good men and to hate either one shows lacking in our own character.

Neil K, Lake Forest CA   August 7th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

DEB, that's deplorable for you to say now you actually want Clinton to be VP in light of this news. There is nothing funny nor charming about what you said, and you prove the point of those who say that Hillary supporters only want her to be president merely so she can be president. That's beyond repugnant.

David S. Robins   August 7th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Sadly, there will probably be many threats like this against Senator Obama. All of them will come from right wing Republicans who love GWBush and John McCain. There are probably several major conspiracies already under way led by such people and funded by rich thugs close to Bush/McCain. McCain likes to brag about his courage, but we decent Americans already know that Senator Obama is a far braver man than McCain ever was or ever will be. Let us pray that he survives all these threats from such right wing, born again, so-called "christian" loonies and goes on to win in November. Then America's redemption can begin.

Not a joke when his cars and rooms are loaded with that kind of ammunition!! If a student enters a school and says anything about a killing, they will be expelled...and if the kid had bomb making materials ready at home you better believe there would be jail time. Now compare a school with the next president of the US and you have a bit of a difference. Major props to the SS for nabbing this trash.

"Can't the Secret Service take a joke?"

Hopefully, no.

Chester   August 7th, 2008 5:55 pm ET

He needs to sue the pants off the secret service (multi-million dollar verdict is in order). Freedom of speach still exists in America, and people are permitted to freely make idle chit chat without fear of arrest. This man made some stupid statement and the Orwellian police arrest him, eventhough he lacks the means, or intent to do it.

susie   August 7th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

Was this guy white? Jessie Jackson threats were on camera and because he is black nothing was hardly said about it. Obama even forgave Jackson.

eartraining   August 7th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

To the person who kept calling Obama "unelectable" ... no you don't get to decide that. You only decide who you vote for. The election decides who is electable and on November 4th Barack Obama will be elected President of the United States. America does not deserve a 3rd McCain term!

Also: The man that threatened Obama is scum. Pure & simple.

Robert   August 7th, 2008 5:52 pm ET

Just a joke? I'm sure he and no one else are laughing.

hitobito   August 7th, 2008 5:51 pm ET

There are psychopathic nuts everywhere. And the State of Florida has more than its share. These idiots need to be locked up for life. Every threat against either Obama or McCain must be taken seriously. One of these men will be the POTUS. I personally hope its Senator Obama. But if its Senator McCain, it wouldn't hurt me either. As an investor in energy companies and energy related companies, I like high refined fuel prices and high crude oil prices. I also hope we drill off of Miami Beach, Malibu, and anywhere else there is oil. The major fear I have about McCain is he may attack Iran and then we will see unleaded regular at $20 a gallon or more when the iranians blockade the Strait of Hormuz which they can do easily by mining the two three mile channels through the Strait. No military power in the world including the US can prevent them from disrupting 40% of the world's oil supply.

chyk o   August 7th, 2008 5:50 pm ET

I don't honestly know what people gain by killing an innocent person who did no harm to them. Of course they have, because they're used to this sort of thing in their communities. Or more properly *from* their communities. Except in those communities (if you can call them that), it's usually more than just threatening to shoot, isn't it?

Jonathon Baker   August 7th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

I think that anyone threatening our next president in such a way should be sent to a maximum security prison for the entire length of Obama's presidency with no possibility for parole, no questions asked period!

The Bu   August 7th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

To Matt and those who may think like him (thinking the Jesse Jackson situation is a double standard); there is a difference in threatening to kill someone, especially a President or Presidential candidate and "threatening" (if you really wanna use that word) to cut someone's n*ts off as Jesse Jackson did. Am I defending Jesse, hell no. All I'm saying is that this man was interviewed by the Secret Service, after making what can now be constituted as a terroristic threat to a man running for President of the United States, and repeated again. That's idiotic! What Jesse did was downright stupid! There is a difference, hence, there is no double standard. You can't go around threatening to KILL someone in Obama or McCain's (or even Bush) position. You just can't do it!! They were right to arrest him.

From the very beginning my family and i have feared that Mr. Obama would be a target, because of skin color...But, like some readers here believe, why does it has to be from Hillary? Why can't it be from the republican oil tycoons? Besides, what happened to FREEEDOM OF SPEECH? And, although it was stupid to tell the Secret Service this "joke", i can understand what the guy meant – he meant that IF he would do it, he'll do it simple, not with so much elaboration...
It's sad that people STILL can't be color blind when it comes to another HUMAN. You know, HUMAN, like we ALL are. So Obama is black, AND? Beware of those that will vote for him JUST BECAUSE on the outside he is black? Or the ones that WILL NOT vote for him because on the outside he is not white. How can we expect things to change if WE haven't changed... Besides, Bush has messed up everything so badly, that two terms would not be enough for ANY democrat to fix things up... I am a Democrat and, unless he (Obama) chooses a running partner whom I believe is qualified enough, i will NOT be voting for him – i think that this HUMAN BEING is not fully capable of running our LAND OF THE FREE. Skin color HAS NOT determined my decision...

You are a traitor if you don't agree with everything he says, no matter how much he changes positions. You're a criminal if you don't continually praise him. Now, you're a murderer if you dare make a joke about him.
You know, I remember a guy who was like that. He and his lackies told us that we aren't patriotic, and we're being criminals if we dare disagree with him... His name was George W. Bush...

The Colorado Marches, claim they are doing it to get Hillary on the ticket, well Hillary is telling them not to.

The people that refuse to believe the facts that he is not Muslim, and all the other junk they are throwing up in the air, to see what *()&) lands and sticks in the minds of those looking for a reason to believe that a black man can not accomplish more than the nut job we already have in office.

If the majority of Americans that are tired of all the political junk, partisan nonsense, and failed policies that has most of us in a funk, allow a remnant of the: its my way or the highway junkies to push us back while we have got our foot in the door of potential change, that will take us out of our condition in America for four more years of this living hell.

We deserve exactly what we get, four more years of unregulated corporate greed, poor healthcare, under funded schools, poor infrastructure, staying in Iraq, open borders, low law enforcement moral, political corruption, NAFTA, CAFTA, off shore drilling, unemployment, homelessness, while the fat cats live off the hog.

Like no one saw this coming. He is one of the most notable people in the world right now and one of the most polarizing so you know the crazies are going to be coming out of the woodwork. Personally I hope he loses the election as I see the country going to Hell with a socialist/marxist president. He ranks at the bottom and only slightly below Clinton and McCain on my "Bad-choice-for-President-o-meter."

However I think this guy may have taken his views to an extreme. Kind of like making terrorist jokes at an airport, not something you want to do.

Honestly if something did happen to him my first thought would be that someone close to Clinton would be involved but I said that several months ago. Look at the track record of people close to the Clintons that had "mysterious accidents".

Chanda-Cincinnati   August 7th, 2008 5:39 pm ET

To Thomas:

I read and still read many a hateful comment from Hillary supporters about Obama during the primaries and now. If she were the Democratic nominee, I would not be juvenile enough to hold the comments of her supporters against her and use that as a lame excuse to not vote for her. Obama not Hillary can control what thier supporters say/do. I would still support my party's nominee, since inevitably thier views on the issues would line up with mine much much more than those of a Republican. So please stop coming up with these sorry excuses as to why you won't support Obama. Be man enough to simply say I don't like him. Or better yet, stop throwing tantrums and get behind the man whose stance on the issues are the most in line with the thinking of your beloved Hillary.

As for this threat, Ray Charles could have seen this coming...and to RE I AM SURE BOTH THE CANDIDATES APPRECIATE THOSE WHO PROTECT THEM!!!

A Message to Sen. Obama and his supporters;

Here's a quote befitting of your whole improbable journey to the US presidency. You've probably heard it before. It's from the great Mahatma Ghandi:

First they ignore you
Then they laugh at you
Then they fight you
Then you win.
So be encouraged!

You Hillary haters need to get a life. She is a powerful person and would have been a terrific nominee but she is not responsible for all the bad things that involve Obama. I get that you want someone to blame all the time but it looks very silly to always blame the Clintons. Jesse Jackson is the only one who has threatened Obama with bodily harm. Look his direction if you have to blame someone.

At the same time the MSM refuses to fact check and publish the facts about Obama's actual record on issues relevant to us. I have to learn all of that from BBC, or, amazingly Obama's own website! Which the MSM also never read....

Tonya, ID   August 7th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

Matt:

Okay, so let's lock up Jesse Jackson now. You really think Barack needs to be worried about Jessie Jackson? Get real.

LJinLA   August 7th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

When Barack commuted himself to this thankless (or at least partiallly thankless ) effort, he knew what he was in for. His hope is that the majority of the voting country is wise enough to support his attempt to give the country back to the people. That's what ALL of us say we want, yet some of us are still blinded by various conditioning cycles over the years. Honestly, if you have not multiplied your wealth by virtue of oil or defense industry wares, you are not a Modern Day Republican. If you are not unfazed about today's current economy, you aren't a MDR. They gladly welcome you wanting to be one, and need your votes, but in the end, you get stiffed just like the vast majority, or 98% of us do. Unfortunately, only half of us are lucid, though more are waking up every day.

I recommend you research the Times/Bloomberg poll for the end of June.

Though the two horse race is closer, when you factor the top 4 likely candidates, Obama holds his pace and is ahead over a dozen points. This still does not really factor in the young guns who could care less about all of this pre-election drama but will be in booths in droves to vote for Obama.

Hillary will be the first woman President even at her older age after a successful two terms of Obama led change, and his full support and popularity exceeding even Bill's. Hopefully she will earn that support beginning tomorrow.
FYI, I'm a independent since the 70's and proud of it.

The best hope for anyone under 250 thousand a year is Obama. His congress and our collectives voices will set this country right. His cabinet is going to be possibly one of the best for us ever.

Final note: This comment comes to you from a product of South Central Los Angeles, educated in L.A.U.S.D. Publc schools work, especially when we make sure the resources are there, and we the people get involved.

Do the right thing for all of us. Shake up the status quo.

Vote for Obama, you will vote for US, and who could better restore the Constitution than a Constitutional professor?

Dj from Illinois   August 7th, 2008 5:31 pm ET

To all those trying to compare this to Jesse Jackson's comment, how ignorant are you? Like Barack said, do you take pride in being ignorant? There is absolutely no comparison in the two and I not going to waste my time trying to explain why because I don't believe anyone can be THAT stupid.

I would be absolutely heart broken if those two little innocent girls lost their father to pure hate. Racism is nothing more jealousy. Racism allows all the stupid racist people (of all colors) make themselves beleive they are smarter/better than others.

And yes, I do blame Hillary to a degree, IF this fool is a Hillary psycho. She has polarized the party and made fanatics out of her fans.

I wouldn't be made at BO if he dropped out. This is not worth his life. Let the ignorant racists people of the world win this one.

Regardless of whether he becomes president or not, this kind of stuff is intolerable. I don't know whether the guy meant it or not, but frankly, I don't care. Lock him up for a good long time. When he gets out, he'll have to explain on every job resume "I threatened to kill a presidential candidate in front of the Secret Service." He just screwed up his entire life in one sentence.

Yeah, and I'm sure that there's no racial motivation behind psychos like this guy. If anyone were to mention it they'd be accused of playing the "race card"...but O has been receiving threats for over a year now, hence the early secret service protection. Does anyone really believe that this would be the case if he were a white guy?

Racial hatred is alive and well, and only those of us who are true patriots and know our nation can do better can battle it. NO MORE FEAR AND IGNORANCE!!!!

Algal   August 7th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

Good Point AJ,

Barack Obama is the MLK our time and the FBI and everyone knows that. Most people are drawn to him and want changes for this country, but you got the hateful white folks who never want to see a black man be POTUS regardless of all the good he does and stands for. Just reminds me of watching MLK fight for rights that were justly due and the hateful whites trying to hold him down and sway the public's perception of him because they were afraid of his power...but keep on keeping on Obama. I'm with you all the way!

Big Bill from Brooklyn   August 7th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

A threat upon anyones life because they chose to work in the service of this country is uterly unAmerican. You would expect this type of threat from outside sources, not within.

No charges were filed against him.

You two can't be serious. "Cut off his nut$" was an obvious figure of speech. You know, I try to avoid thinking of others as just plain stupid, but every once in a while you run into someone (or two) who make the conclusion unavoidable.

You people who think Clinton or McCain had anything to do with this are sick – sick – sick. A true indication of where and with whom things are wrong in this country. It is a very stupid person who thought that Clinton was saying anything more than Kennedy was in his campaign well into June. If you thought anything else....well, what a show of ignorant Americans. You are stupid people and just what Obama ordered up – followers with no brains!

Shame on you folks.

Rachelraye- MD   August 7th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

The blood of Jesus is all around Senator Obama he has the power to keep him safe from all harm and danger. This year has already been a divine intervention for me. He wouldn't have gotten this far if the Lord was not holding him in the palm of his hands. What God has for him it is for him. The Secret Service needs additional help and it's the Lord.

I'm not surprised. Change is scary to most people which is why our leaders for change has always fallen victim to nut jobs. Lincoln, JFK, RFK and MLK. It would be a sad day in America if this happens again. Let all hope this doesn't happen and both candidates remain safe.

Needless to say, I was pissed off and could not enjoy the Senator's speech because of the lack of security.

WHEN you consider the incredible latitude that bounty hunters have,it is not surprising that this kind of remark would have been made.Bounty hunters have been taught they can basically do anything they want to bring back a bail jumper. They can break down somebody's front door without knocking if they have a reasonable basis for believing there is a bail jumper inside.THese vermin need to be taught a lesson that they are not above the law ;this guy should be made a national example of with the end goal of promoting reform in what these animals can do.

Mike in MN   August 7th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

I am so glad they caught this nut case.

With all the hatred being spewed in the blogs I'm afraid this won't be the last.

Hilliary supporters calling Obama and his supporters all kinds of terrible names and spewing hate.
Obama supporters calling Hilliary supporters calling all kinds of terrible names and spewing hate.
Democrats calling McCain and his supporters all kinds of names and spewing hate.

This is what comes out of all that hate.

Think of all the tension that is leading towards the Democratic convention. Hillary supporters who absoultly hate Obama have already planned two demonstations. There is so much bitterness and anger boiling over in the Democratic party. I don't think they are ready for the deep emotinonal termoil that they have created with an African American and Women as their two leading candidates.

Please tone it down. This is America, we are all free to support the candidate and party of our choice. We can disagree with each other, but keep it civil. Once the votes are counted, respect the results. If your candidate of choice does not win, look forward to the next election and respect, don't react with all this hate. Hate breeds violence. Stop it now.

Obama is the biggest celebrity running for the king of the world title. All he does is pandering for votes. He is an unelectable inexperienced elitist. I think people who vote for him are as naive as he is. But for a person wanting to kill Obama is crazy and should be sent to jail period. Obama may be unelectable but I think he is a good man and a good father.

Unelectable, King of the world, Pandering. I think both candidates are doing a little pandering, they are running for the highest elected position in our nation. Also, is it not ok for the world to embrace the Democratic nominee and then therefore re-embrace the U.S. ? I see two arguments one from the Dems early on and another from McCain and his 500 dollar shoes, 12 million dollars worth of homes and rich in-laws. How is Obama an elitist again? Is it because he is confident and has a purpose? Is it because he wants better for the American people other than being despised the world over. Or is it because he comes from a single mother, broken home, and scholarshipped education? ( that last part would be sarcasm, since you have a problem thinking for yourself. ) Please stop watching Fox Noise and engaging in all the USUAL talking points and come with some factual information. Also I would beg to differ regarding the unelectable comment as there are rethugs jumping on the Obama train. Its almost silly how people will force feed this nonsense down their own throats.
And that was cute how you got your shots in before you complemented him, another rethug smoke screen. Typical.

And for the looney that's thinking about it..you will make Obama an instant martyr and he will go down in history as the greatest person ever. There will be holidays, his picture on money etc. Let America prove that it is the place where anyone, regardless of race or creed has a chance at anything they put their mind to. If you don't like that concept, move out of the country.

Hate and racism is ingrained in people from a very early age; your upbringing fuels how you interpret and view the world as you grow older. Some have an open mind and discard what they were taught, but others live by how they were raised and will never change.

Unfortunately, there is still a segment of the population who are ignorant, and have violent natures and it doesn't take much to set them off. There has never been a guy like Obama 1/2 white 1/2 black as president of the United States. This nation has always been a nation of hate with some people. Doesn't surprise me.

This is the America. What else?

I remember Reagan being shot, the photos of JFK, etc... So hard on a nation.

Adrian Veidt   August 7th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

It's sad that there are people so terrified of change and so hateful that they'd rather kill a candidate than risk the possibility of seeing them elected (this can go for either candidate).

Berndt Seattle, WA   August 7th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

I am not a fan of NOBama, but I certainly don't want anyone killing him. That would surely turn him in to some kind of martyr and we'd never hear the end of it.

lady   August 7th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Its amazing to me how many people I have witnessed wishing death on our current president. People need to respect the candidates, officials already in office. Where has common sense gone with so many people?

Johnson in St. Louis   August 7th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

I think some of the commentary I've read on here is just as bad as the threat. Some folks think it's funny. I am not a great supporter of Bush nor Cheney but I would take great offense and take it very serious if some nutcase threaten their lives. I guess if this man took his threat out these same people would be jumping for joy. It's really disgusting.

Chris from NY   August 7th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I thought this day might come but I never thought it would be this early. I am persuaded to beleive that this guy didn't do this because Obama is black because certainly other president's lives have been threatened and sometimes attempts made on them. But never I heard a presidentail candidate's life being threatened. It's because of the hate they see spewed on the television. Some pundits take pride in playing right into people's insecurities.

jim   August 7th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

It is just because of these articles that it has come up. I suspect most are coming from the right!

Praetorian, Fort Myers   August 7th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Obama is a nuncio-one part of my brain prays for his safety-the other part cries out to silence his wierdo socialist agenda and ideology with all resources.

I am no killer–I've served 24 years in the military under Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush II.

But I'm very concerned about the direction our nation may take under Obama. We have the constitutional right to overthrow tyranny-would a socialist Presidencey like Obama's be considered tyrannical?

I know there are a lot of patriots–who would take up arms if their liberties are threatened. As it was in 1776– Americans minds are made up–tyrrany will not prevail on this land.

Cheryl   August 7th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

I couldn't stand if this country had another Bobbie Kennedy experience. He was our best hope for a better way back when I was a kid and we were robbed. Robbed of so much. I think I'd just sink into despair if that happened again.

Kris   August 7th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

If Obama becomes president, this isnt going to be the last attempt.. or threat or etc.. There are plenty of ppl out there that will not like having a black president.. and I think some have made that clear..

I am not an Obama fan either nor any of the current political ppl around, but death isnt the answer because there will eventually be a black or female president..

Shari, NY   August 7th, 2008 4:45 pm ET

Come on America – let’s be a role model here. Let’s unite and love one another.

It would be very bad for Republicans if someone knocked off Obama as Hillary would be stronger candidate. However what is in Clintons' best interest. Let's hope his security detail can prevent him from being "vince fostered". By the way why is CNN avoiding the John Edwards love child story.? If it happened to Romney ya all would report in a minute and don't use the Mrs. Edwards has cancer excuse as she already knows the truth and Romney's wife has Multiple Sclerosis but MSM would be camping out in his front yard under similiar circumstances.

None of this makes sense. I know there are a lot of idiots in the world but who tells the Secret Service you'd kill the future President with a sniper riffle and then claim that's a joke? I guess it's funny cause no US President has ever actually been killed by sniper fire? This man is a pansy for either the Repubs or HRC. Funny how this comes out as HRC is planning to campaign in Florida. How many people want to bet she'll be asked 1000 questions about this while in Florida so that it stays in the news and overshadows her visit which is what she wants? Politics is a dirty game.

Lee-- Dallas, TX   August 7th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

This was released from the AP by CURT ANDERSON- Legal Affairs Writer:

'In the interview with a Secret Service agent, Geisel said "if he wanted to kill Senator Obama he simply would shoot him with a sniper rifle, but then he claimed that he was just joking," according to court documents.

A search of Geisel's 1998 Ford Explorer and hotel room in Miami uncovered a loaded 9mm handgun, knives, dozens of rounds of ammunition including armor-piercing types, body armor, military-style fatigues and a machete. The SUV was wired with flashing red and yellow emergency lights.'

I am appreciative that the initial threat was taken seriously, investigated immediately and now the culprit is in custody. My prayers are with the candidates.

RDS   August 7th, 2008 4:41 pm ET

@Matt, Canoga Park....are you honestly serious? It's not even the same situation. Obviously Jackson didn't have any real plans to hurt Obama. This man really had intentions of doing harm to Obama. He supposedly made a similar threat against Bush

cornelius   August 7th, 2008 4:40 pm ET

I'm not surprised. Unfortunately....instead of focusing on the issues and the need for change...it seems that race and ignorance will will have a louder voice in this election and quite possibly the next presidency. Its ironic that a black actor or even a woman can play a president on t.v. but when it comes down to reality, it becomes a different story. Due to the economic crisis and impending energy shortage, we must accept that change will be the norm and not resist what it may bring to our lives, because its that resistance is what put us in this position that we find ourselves now. We have to look to the future and recognize that it may be quite different from what we;ve grown accustom to.

I even hesitate to comment on this...but as a strong Obama supporter and VERY in tune with the underlying racism and hate in this country this comes to me and I’m sure many others at no surprise. Never on CNN’s blog but on many conservative blogs I have seen down right racism and hatred statement toward Obama. The statement were not because they disagreed with Obama’s position on the issues but only because he is black (and nothing more).

Nevertheless, the only way we can fight the ignorance and hate like this is to deal with it head on BECAUSE IT'S NOT GOING TO GO AWAY!!!!! Obama is the best candidate to lead this country into a better America….no matter, gender, race or religion.

I challenge every single racist and ignorant person in this country to fight with your minds and not violence. If you really feel the way you feel then express it in words and not violence. Innocent and descent people should not be hurt because they don’t fit “your” norm.

God hates ugly….not matter the color of your skin!!!!

Plotting to take someone's life for whatever reason, is wrong and unGodly. Whatever political party Senator Obama represents, he is first and foremost an American, and should be safe to be whoever he wishes to be in this great country, whether it be a Joe America, a U.S. Senator and even a contender for the U.S. presidency without fearing for his life. We need to remember that Senator Obama is someone's son, husband and father. Therefore, do unto him what you wish to be done unto you.

Eric (a white guy)   August 7th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Raymond Hunter Geisel, at a bailbondsman training course – wow... I wonder if he's a hillbilly?

Marge Hibbing Mn   August 7th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

With all the conterversary he has raised it is a wonder that there have not been more threats. As well as threats to McCain and even tho she is not the candidate, Hillary Clinton also.

I bet there are a lot of people out there that have threatened them. They just haven't been caught. I think it is terrible that people go out and shoot other people.

ClintonDem4Cynthia08   August 7th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

Thats awful. Once Cynthia McKinney is president, things like this will stop happening. Go Green 08!

Karen B in Houston   August 7th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

This is only a preview of what's to come, and many in the black community have expected these type of antics.

Cheryl   August 7th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

So much hatred in this country. People should appreciate the courage it takes for Obama (and his family) to run for president. No wonder his stolen prayer from the Western Wall started with a request for God's protection for his family and himself. This must be on their minds all the time. He must have a very strong desire to serve his country to risk this.

Bushwhacked in Eugene, OR   August 7th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

This has been my biggest fear in this election year, and continues to be. Hatred is at a new height in this country, and racists abound.

Can't we just let the hatred go, folks, and deal on a more rational level?

Dan   August 7th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

This is the reason the rest of the world thinks Americans are morons. It is absolutely ridiculous that something like this would happen, and unfortunately I'm sure it won't be the last time something like this comes up.

Bob Indianapolis, IN   August 7th, 2008 4:33 pm ET

More PUMAs, huh?

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   August 7th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

He must listens to the haters on Fox News and Rush Gumba!

Whining Tommy Hussein in St. Louis   August 7th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

So, are the blind, bitter, hateful, glorying-in-their-ignorance PUMA psychos with their major malfunction going to openly wish that Geisel would have been able to carry out his apparent threat?

And, on an unrelated note: I know that somebody will inevitably post something to the effect of "Cue this or that in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1" or "Let the hateful comments start in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1..." Please... this countdown thing was clever for only the first 58 billion times I've seen it here in the Ticker, and after that it has gotten pretty old. It's especially cheesy when it appears in the middle or near the bottom of the thread, underneath many of the anticipated hateful or "cued" comments.

Lorenzo   August 7th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

Yet another REDNECK with a big mouth when he has a gun in his hands. Guess since he won't have that gun anymore he'll grab a bat when he becomes a Dog The Bounty Hunter wannabe!

PUMA in Training   August 7th, 2008 4:32 pm ET

I'm not an Obama fan but I would never wish him harm and am worried about those fantics out there.

Yes, Secret Service – keep them safe.

Ken Pittsburgh   August 7th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Obama please be careful out there the so called real red blooded
AMERICANS will be coming out of the wood work

informed florida voter   August 7th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Guys like him are all talk. Satan has legions of deamons protecting his protegy.

Connie, Tennessee   August 7th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

The crazies are out . The racists will be out in full force once they see that there's no stopping Obama. He will be our next President and I can't wait for an end to life under the Repugs.

Joyce, ny   August 7th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

Keep 'em safe please.

Leah DiMarco, Texas   August 7th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

It's pretty strange that this story comes out about Obama right when Hillary is back in the news!!!

james,Fort Lauderdale   August 7th, 2008 4:31 pm ET

I hope he doesn't get release anytime soon, Barack received many threats about his life since he announced his candidacy, anyone that's in their right mind will not joke about Killing somebody, specifically a major party candidate for the presidency of the united states...."Simply shoot him with a sniper rifle" seems like he was putting some good thoughts to it too, he doesn't want get close to him but use a sniper riffle instead...I congratulate the secret services for following up on the threat.

Howard   August 7th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Sad to say, I've been expecting precisely this sort of thing. In fact, I believe that much of the disparity between the polls showing how many are willing to vote Democratic and how many are willing to vote for Obama can be attributed to latent anti-black feelings. This is no reason not to elect Senator Obama to the Presidency, but it is a reason why, more so than most presidential candidates, he needs to choose as his running mate someone who could do the job as President.

Justin, Ohio   August 7th, 2008 4:30 pm ET

Absolutely horrible! Obama and I have completely different views, but I would never want anything like this to happen to anyone running for office.

NELSON Colorado Springs, Co   August 7th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Something like this can't be taking lighty lock him up. Go Obama

Susan   August 7th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

I meant Obama/Hillary

Becky   August 7th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

The lack of intelligence is clearly shown in his poor choice of words used in his "joke".

P, CA   August 7th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Sad thing is: I'm sure this won't be the last. I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I'm not looking for excitement in the stories of the day because my life is "so boring." But seriously, with the behavior of some of these blogger, even, I feel like this is the tip of the iceberg.

Funny how hate affects people. They say it takes more muscles to smile than it does to frown. So I guess people like taking the easy way out.

Ennis   August 7th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Please lock this person up for a really long time...

biffington, biff   August 7th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Father in Heaven, Please keep Senator Obama and his family safe. In Jesus' name I pray.

Amen.

Susan   August 7th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Someone just trying to get in the news. Glad they caight him.

Obama?Hillary!!

Bill from ALabama   August 7th, 2008 4:29 pm ET

Jessie Jackson threatened to castrate Obama on National Television..............has he been detained?????????

Re   August 7th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

I hope Obama appreciates his protection!!

NC Resident   August 7th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

If you didn't know, Obama has been under threats since the beginning of his campaign. Now that it is getting close to November, I bet you we will see a spike in the threats especially if he wins.
God help us if that should happen.

Dave F   August 7th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

This country is filled with ignorant, racist morons. It is a shame that in the year 2008 we have to deal with people threatening to kill our leaders.

Nova from NV   August 7th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Obama is the biggest celebrity running for the king of the world title. All he does is pandering for votes. He is an unelectable inexperienced elitist. I think people who vote for him are as naive as he is. But for a person wanting to kill Obama is crazy and should be sent to jail period. Obama may be unelectable but I think he is a good man and a good father.

McCain 08!

kcmookie   August 7th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Sadly, the first of many to come I am sure. Why do people so desperately want to detroy a person simply because they are black or because they want to change the world and make it a better place? I will never understand the thought process, but I know it is out there. So sad.

Anonymous   August 7th, 2008 4:28 pm ET

Can't the Secret Service take a joke?

S.M   August 7th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

I don't believe that this was a joke. This individual mean't every word and he should be thrown in jail for the rest of his life.

Mary   August 7th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

Yet another sicko in America. I guess the nut is comfortable with the state America is in why he'd wanna hurt Obama. Change Change Change all the way!

OBAMA 08 & 12!!!

TEXAS TRAIL DOG WONT HUNT!   August 7th, 2008 4:27 pm ET

wow, what a nut! we need to remember we are all americans. not need to kill, just vote your will.

megan   August 7th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

It's amazing that still people in this country are so idiotic that they would even make an attempt against Obama. Just because this idiot denies it does not mean that he does not need to be jailed. So put the idiot in jail

lym   August 7th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I AM SO GLAD THEY CAUGHT THIS IDIOT!!! SO SAD....

Abby   August 7th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Lord, please protect this man. Win or lose, please let him live a long long time to raise his beautiful children. Thank you!

man, my heart jumped.

Dwayne - L, OH   August 7th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

I'll make it quite simple. Prison is not where you want to be after something or anything of this nature. He's definitely going to be a starting receiver now. :-)

Winston   August 7th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Ad admonish all who love Barack Obama to cover him with your prayers. That Gods shield of protection may surround him. Barack is embarking on new grounds. As I watch him shaking the thrones of his faithfuls hands I always cringe. Its almost impossible for the Secret Service to fully protect him at his rallies.

rayofhope   August 7th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Here we go.... the first of many (I'm sure). There have probably been many more threats that we do not know about but because this one is being reported, it must be credible.

This is a very sick world we live in....

Haters   August 7th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

This needs to be taken seriously. We all have had the thought that there are white people who will do anything to keep an African American man from becoming President. We have our concerns about the lengths Hillary and her supporters will go to.

McCain 08   August 7th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

Eventhough I'm for McCain, I will continue to pray for Mr. Obama

Michelle, PA   August 7th, 2008 4:25 pm ET

This is the kind of thing many Obama supporters are afraid of. Secret Service, keep BOTH our candidates safe! If anybody can do it in a world full of crazies and haters, it's you guys (and gals). God Bless.

Disappointed Democrat, New York   August 7th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

I fear there will be much more of this to happen. I don't like Obama myself, but I certainly do not want any harm to come to him and his family. May God protect them.

cherrystrawberry   August 7th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

be careful Senator Obama. May GOD nestle you & yours in his sweet arms. Amen

indewoman   August 7th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

so sad

Obama/Clinton 08

Matt, Canoga Park   August 7th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Jesse Jackson said he wanted to do Barack bodily harm as well and his threat was caught on camera so there is no denying that he did it.

No charges were filed against him.

Double Standard? How convienient.

Linda from Prescott AZ   August 7th, 2008 4:24 pm ET

Good Lord what are we coming to.

Kevin, NC   August 7th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

This individual will no longer be threat to any individual once he hits the general population of a prison yard.

ben   August 7th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

fear bomb!

Watch out people, Republicans fear bomb at works!

Franky   August 7th, 2008 4:23 pm ET

Remember what I said before.......remember....

A Nightingale Sings in Berkley Square   August 7th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

He's probably a PUMA repug!

Did you hear that the Head PUMA has been embezzling from PUMA donations?

Beth   August 7th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

And Obama is not even officially nominated yet. This gives me a chill.

Kiah   August 7th, 2008 4:22 pm ET

Wow! This isn't the first and won't be the last.

United   August 7th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

I bet Hillary put him up to it.

Obama Supporter   August 7th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

Wow. Not a joke.

OBAMA Supporter all the way   August 7th, 2008 4:20 pm ET
