Congressman wants to bring up “Paris Hilton plan”

Rep. Michael Burgess things the 'Paris Hilton plan' for energy should be considered.

Rep. Michael Burgess things the 'Paris Hilton plan' for energy should be considered.

CAPITOL HILL (CNN) - The lines between celebrity and politician blurred into a haze Thursday at a Republican news conference, as one congressman began pushing Paris Hilton's “plan” on energy.

"Let's bring up the Paris Hilton plan," goaded Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas.

Burgess and his fellow Republicans are in day five energy speeches on the House floor, despite the fact that the chamber is closed for August recess. They're trying to pressure House Speaker Nancy Pelosi into holding a vote on offshore oil drilling.

As they plan for another week of House protest, those Republicans have found an unlikely ally and publicity magnet in Hilton. The model and actress launched a parody campaign commercial earlier this week, suggesting a hybrid of energy plans from presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain

"We can do limited offshore drilling, with strict environmental oversight," the heiress suggested in an animal print bathing suit, "while creating tax incentives to get Detroit making hybrid and electric cars."

"Even Paris Hilton had an energy plan that she's talking about," said Burgess, seizing a chance to make Democrats look lackluster on the issue.

The Texas congressman tried to put Hilton in the Republican camp, claiming her words mirrored current GOP legislation known as the "No More Excuses Energy Act". But, while that proposal does allow offshore drilling, a congressional summary shows it does not contain tax credits to encourage new automobile technology.

And that keeps Hilton, strangely, in the centrist chair on energy. A centrist, poolside lounge chair

So for 6 years of Republican controlled congress – nothing, no energy plan, it was all about oil, as in Operation Iraqi Liberation (OIL). Less than2 years into the Democratic majority, suddenly they want to do something like give public land to oil companies RIGHT AWAY, NOW, HURRY HURRY. Gee do you think this is a political ploy, right before the election? What a way to run a country!

I say drill under one stipulation. We buy oil from the cheapest maker. Arab or Off shore US. If not, one day we will really be slaves to big oil.

  4. Are u kiddin'?

Aaron and every other PUMA, Republican morons out there. The problem is not drilling. In fact, the problem is not even the environmental effect. The thing you dumbbeats can't get into your thick skull is the fact that the oil we drill locally will go into the world bank and into the global market where we will be competing with countries like China whose demand has surged over 40 % in the last 5 years alone. What this means is that it will have little to zero impact on our current predicament. Alternative engery is the way to go. We need short-term solutions in order to build a long term strategy. hssssssss
nevermind. I'm talking to a bunch of idiots who can't think for themselves. Go to daddy Limbough you for you PUMAs, keep masking your racism with the wrong notion that Obama is the cause of Hillary's campaing failure.

Given that McCain is demonstrably sexist, and rather extremely so, I can't possibly understand what would motivate a former Clinton supporter to say that they're going to vote for him. Voter for Barr, vote for Nader, not vote at all, these I can see. Can there any reason other than petulance or racism to vote for somebody who not only doesn't agree with you, but is the antithesis of all your political positions on gender and equality?

"If Obama gets the nomination, I'm going to vote for the candidate who left his first wife after she was disfigured in a car accident, who pimped his current wife out to a crowd of bikers, and who voted against equal wages for women! That makes perfect sense!"

Explain this to me! Please! It's like a Christian voting for a Satanist over a pastor because the pastor is a Presbyterian instead of a Lutheran. There is no sense or reason to it, is there?

This whole thing about Republicans trying to tell tell the Democrats that it will be their fault if the government is shut down is ridiculous. It's right up there with a psycho ex-girlfriend putting a gun to her own head telling you that it's your fault because you broke up with her. You wouldn't blame yourself then so don't blame the Democrats now. Blame the psychopath, the Republicans (and I say psychopaths only in the context of this specific debate).

Once again the Republicans are proud of looking ridiculous. Paris Hilton plan? Her plan was to mock McCain and now the republicans hold on to it like Paris is the economic guru they've been waiting for.

I know the bar has been lowered the past eight years but during McCains campaign it seems the Republicans have just placed it on the floor.

Have you read Obama's web site. ALL the ideas are someone else's – essentially the same as any liberal democrat.
Yes I have and both of his books. He is not nearly as liberal as some people (McCain supporters & Obama haters) want others to think. I strongly suspect you have not actually read the policy statements on his website. You did not make reference to one specific position. It appears you want to affect the opinions of others with baseless claims, hoping they won't actually "read" his website.

The Republicans of Big Oil include your Boy Barack… Check his Voting Record…
Obama's voting record shows he has voted against big oil many times, while John McCain has not actually voted on any energy bill in two years and sided with oil frequently prior to that (that is, when he did actually take the effort to vote).

Why would we electe as our President, a Senator who has almost completely shirked his duties by missing nearly 75% of the votes over the past two years? Just call him Senator AWOL!

Run Paris run. You would get my vote and you may help the rest of these fools to wake up and to start doing what is best for our country. I knew that if George Bush could be president than anyone can. We had a vice that was not as smart as a 5th grader so Paris may be the one to expose just what is going on in Washington.

Another thing I am getting sick of the Dimocrats spouting is

–It takes 10 years before drilling would produce anything (yeah thats right...OH WAIT....Clinton vetoed a bill over 10 years ago that would have been producing oil 2 years ago with the Dimocrats thinking)

    - It takes 5-6 years for nuclear power plants to be up and running (again the Dimocrats want you to think they have a plan that will deliver something faster?

Oil, clean coal, natural gas for the immediate...DRILL NOW! Nuclear to shore up and glean off coal, AND while we are using our OWN supplies of oil and keeping OUR money in OUR nation we can develope alternative fuels.

Get real people.....Obama is an empty suit

IGNORE THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN......oh wait...nm its just a person with a teleprompter

How are they spending our Tax dollars? They are on vacation, are they not? If they are not then we need to have a long look at why the Dems are no were to be found.

At this point, I would vote for Paris Hilton over both McCain and Obama. While she doesn't elevate the level of intelligence of this campaign season, at least she's less revolting to look at and listen to than either of the current candidates.

Canada supports Obama August 7th, 2008 1:36 pm ET

John McCain flip flopped on drilling for oil on June 23rd, 2008 for political gain.

Barack Obama compromised and although he still doesn't agree with drilling is willing to meet the GOP in the middle on this issue.

Actually McCain has one of the best records for compromise.
The flip flop you are talking about is actually a compromise. When he was opposed to drilling gas was about $2 per gallon. Obama didn't compromise he flipped. The only thing that changed during him going from no drilling to drilling was he dropped 10 points in the polls and Americans were 70% in favor of drilling.

maybe you should take off you hockey skates and do some research, EH!!!!
