Congressman wants to bring up “Paris Hilton plan”

Rep. Michael Burgess things the 'Paris Hilton plan' for energy should be considered.
Rep. Michael Burgess things the 'Paris Hilton plan' for energy should be considered.

CAPITOL HILL (CNN) - The lines between celebrity and politician blurred into a haze Thursday at a Republican news conference, as one congressman began pushing Paris Hilton's “plan” on energy.

"Let's bring up the Paris Hilton plan," goaded Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas.

Burgess and his fellow Republicans are in day five energy speeches on the House floor, despite the fact that the chamber is closed for August recess. They're trying to pressure House Speaker Nancy Pelosi into holding a vote on offshore oil drilling.

As they plan for another week of House protest, those Republicans have found an unlikely ally and publicity magnet in Hilton. The model and actress launched a parody campaign commercial earlier this week, suggesting a hybrid of energy plans from presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain

"We can do limited offshore drilling, with strict environmental oversight," the heiress suggested in an animal print bathing suit, "while creating tax incentives to get Detroit making hybrid and electric cars."

"Even Paris Hilton had an energy plan that she's talking about," said Burgess, seizing a chance to make Democrats look lackluster on the issue.

The Texas congressman tried to put Hilton in the Republican camp, claiming her words mirrored current GOP legislation known as the "No More Excuses Energy Act". But, while that proposal does allow offshore drilling, a congressional summary shows it does not contain tax credits to encourage new automobile technology.

And that keeps Hilton, strangely, in the centrist chair on energy. A centrist, poolside lounge chair

We all know what will happen if the "Paris" plan swings into effect. First off, "LIMITED" drilling means what? And where? Florida? Texas? Baja? New York? Come on....there is no such thing as limited! Secondly, the big car makers can not afford to start developing hybrid cars, or scooters for that matter! The overseas market is clobbering them every which way.

Are the Republicans that scared where they have to address a speech done by an airhead, who is doing this all for some notice on you tube? sad, very sad.

There's a reason why the plan is good - it was written by chief marketing and creative strategists for a major Web 2.0 website, and recorded by Paris Hilton. It's a coherent plan presented, um, effectively by a celebrity spokesperson.

I hope Obama will be able to use this idea of Hilton on republicans first they say she is nothing but a celebrity, and a hear head. Now they want to embrace the same person they made fun of in their add after she make and energy idea of her own they want to adapt her idea. What are these republicans thinking? Don't they have pride in themselves and the country? Boy are they in for big surprise. First make a commercial about her that she is celebrity with no but anyway they love her idea. If we vote for Mccain I hope we will not be surprise what we get.

The Republicans are losing it. If this off-shore drilling was so important why didn't they do it before...now they are endorsing Paris Hilton's plan? This country needs to wake up and throw these idiots out – and stop playing house in the Capitol. Someone forgot to tell them that they don't run the show anymore and their President is in China too. Hope he stays there.

Paris's plan makes more sense than Obama's. She has more common sense than these two candidates.

    To Abby:

What gives??? This blog has nothing to do with Hillary's debt or Michele Obama. Since your on the subject of MO take a look at what the local military community is saying about her visit yesterday in Norfolk, VA. Pilotonline.com will get you there. Seems the majority of the community doesn't see your candidate fit to be the Commander in Chief. Surprise...

Not Sleeping at the Switch says, "Just like a Republican…take ANYONES Advice but a Democrats. Funny thing is Obama has been saying the Same thing as Paris"

Sorry but you are WRONG! Obummer said he was against dirlling at all cost until the fool saw the polls and that the majority were FOR drilling. Obama flips and flops for political expediency. That kind of moron cant be trusted.

i find it quite interesting that the Republicans and McCain for that matter dont see when they are being mocked...HELLO! she called a fellow Repbulican "a wrinkley old man" and yet Republicans would rather look past that and use her "idea" it is very similar to Obama's differently only because it encourages Detroit to build more electric cars. which i am surprised that the Republicans didnt come up with THAT part of an idea. it was Obama that play his hand and said he would be will to allow offshore drill if... where are the Republicans willing to compromise on their drill drill drill policy?

  17. Republican for Obama

Just for the record Obama never said he supports off shore drilling, he said he would accept limited offshore drilling as a compromise energy plan. That is the problem with Congress, each party wants it their way or no way and no one will compromise leaving us in gridlock. We as Americans needs to realize that we cannot always get exactly what we want, but we can compromise with people that don't agree and get a workable solution.

if you numskulls actually thought Paris cam up with that plan you are crazy. She was reading a script.

Her idea is a hybrid of both plans. You can say it is basically mccains (drill with incentives for alternatives) or you can say it is basically obamas (alternative energy with maybe some drilling)

It matters very little since Americans are paying high gas prices, Not democrats and republicans. Americans. Pelosi will not allow a vote on any bill that includes drilling period. She is a failure, as is her congress.

Are you telling me that no one in Congress has suggested a comprehensive plan like this??????? I thought a hybrid of both plans (Obama's & McCain's) was a given!!!!!! This is so sad.

Maybe, although, its good that McCain likens Obama to Paris, as sadly she might just be one of the best "politicians" in Washington.
(Didn't Obama have about the same plan anyways? Comprimise.)

"Let's take Paris's advice" Sen. Obama could use this in an ad since it is his idea that she is talking about. Sad,sad, sad that the republican party has no ideas of their own so they take the idea that they think is coming from a celebrity. Maybe the celebrity ad was not so bad after all. They have no original ideas and have the nerve to address Sen,. Obama as empty, oh baby. Lol, lol, lol.

Didn't McCain make similar comments about home heating costs during the primaries? No one made a big deal about it because it was common sense stuff that many folks simply ignore or forget about, just like the tire gauge.

Most service stations do not check your tire pressures, even when they claim to do so for free with an oil change. Ya know. Free 20 point check with an oil change.
