Congressman wants to bring up “Paris Hilton plan”

Rep. Michael Burgess things the 'Paris Hilton plan' for energy should be considered.

Rep. Michael Burgess things the 'Paris Hilton plan' for energy should be considered.

CAPITOL HILL (CNN) - The lines between celebrity and politician blurred into a haze Thursday at a Republican news conference, as one congressman began pushing Paris Hilton's “plan” on energy.

"Let's bring up the Paris Hilton plan," goaded Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas.

Burgess and his fellow Republicans are in day five energy speeches on the House floor, despite the fact that the chamber is closed for August recess. They're trying to pressure House Speaker Nancy Pelosi into holding a vote on offshore oil drilling.

As they plan for another week of House protest, those Republicans have found an unlikely ally and publicity magnet in Hilton. The model and actress launched a parody campaign commercial earlier this week, suggesting a hybrid of energy plans from presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain

"We can do limited offshore drilling, with strict environmental oversight," the heiress suggested in an animal print bathing suit, "while creating tax incentives to get Detroit making hybrid and electric cars."

"Even Paris Hilton had an energy plan that she's talking about," said Burgess, seizing a chance to make Democrats look lackluster on the issue.

The Texas congressman tried to put Hilton in the Republican camp, claiming her words mirrored current GOP legislation known as the "No More Excuses Energy Act". But, while that proposal does allow offshore drilling, a congressional summary shows it does not contain tax credits to encourage new automobile technology.

And that keeps Hilton, strangely, in the centrist chair on energy. A centrist, poolside lounge chair

The Republicans are so happy now... they've got their celebrity attention. The McCain/Hilton ticket...

I can understand Hilton picking up the ball and running with the spoof, but the Republicans too? Like Paris' mom said... "what a waste of money..."

I think this article's value lies with the number of looney Republican trolls and operatives who have posted here actually supporting this.

I wonder how much money the Republican Cetral Committee spends paying all you folks?

    I'd go with Hilton's plan....

Clearly Americans want something to be done about this issue...and the only way to get either side on board with something like this is to create a 50/50 compromise as no one will want to appear to be giving in to the other.

I support Obama's plan over McCains....but neither of them are going to happen if no one allows compromise to happen.

In a shocking press conference today the RNC announced it's support for "The Howdy Doody Peace Plan for the Middle East!" as well as "The Colbert Plan that Every American Deserves His or Her Own Spider!"

    Good grief..........

Yes, it was Obama's energy plan. The Republicans missed the punchline.

Paris was bashing McCain and offering Obama's energy plan. Did they really miss that – wait a minute, we're talking about the Republicans right, of course they missed it.

Offshore drilling is not the answer to our energy problems, it would just help line the pockets of McCain and Bush's oil buddies and transfer our dependence on oil from one greedy source to another. What we need is new thinking along with clean and inexpensive alternative energy sources, such as hydrogen, wind, and solar power.

And we certainly don't need to remove the gas tax for any amount of time. Americans are already willing to pay upwards of $4 / gal and oil companies know that. If you lower the price a dozen cents per gallon by removing the tax, companies will just raise the price a dozen cents per gallon to make up for it. They don't care that the people are getting ripped off; all they know is people are willing to pay, regardless of to whom the money goes. Consumers won't be saving any money, taxes would plummet, and the rich will just get richer. Let me know how that helps the average American working family fallen into hard times, eh?

Wow, you guys really aren't reading this story are you? They aren't seriously considering Hilton's plan for our 'energy crisis', they're just keeping the topic of energy going while all the do-nothing Democratics in congress take a non-earned vacation. READ, don't BLINDLY HATE.

  12. Joking Seriously

Is Burgess serious, her commercial was a joke at McPutz for bagging on a family that donates to his sick cause. Only a stupid repub f-uhk would think this is a good plan and we should move forward on it. This is the problem with the country idiots like Burgess that get elected by racist rednecks, that have no real pull in life and no understanding of how the world works. Dispicable, he should be thrown from office and lynched in the streets.

  15. Do we really want McJEALOUS, Mc Sane or John McCane????

There seems to be a whole lot of jealous, silly and immature Obama haters on this blog today. I guess you guys are just going where McCain wants you to.

It's one thing to say that you dislike a candidate's policy or ideas. But to say things that are flat-out untrue, like Paris Hilton has a better energy plan than Obama, or that Obama only knows how to read a teleprompter and doesn't have any ideas, you're just straight up mean and HATIN' ON HIM because he's getting a lot of attention.

Burgess is just anotther stooge in the Texas Repub redistricting plan that was hatched by that evil exterminator, Tom DeLay. Instead of our SE area of Ft Worth (predominately minority) having representation (see Martin Frost), we were lumped in with Denton and other predominately white areas to the north.

Hilton has a better plan than either one of the morons running for office.

Plus, she is not a warmonger like McBush or a racist like Hussein Nobama. Proven fact!

Please people, don't be fooled into thinking that Paris instinctively responded to the McCain ad. As an opportunist (when taking a break from wreckless behavior) she was simply reading a script which was written by SOMEONE else. Likely a publicist.

C'mon, people stay focused and dont be distracted by the "smoky mirror" propoganza. After all, we are (at least) high school graduates, aren't we?

Geez...Another reason why they hate America(ns)!

Are DEMOTARDS completely stupid? A DEMOTARD senate leader is blocking voting for offshore drilling. Offshore drilling would lower the prices of oil in America. I guess DEMOTARDS love paying $4 for a gallon of gas. And no I'm not a REPUBLITARD either – I'm a LIBERTARIAN, the only party that makes sense.

shows you how serious these bozos are. 8 years of W and 14 of last 16 years of Congressional rule and now all of the sudden this is so urgent. You know why ... they are about to lose the White House for 16 years of Obama, Bayh leadership and most of those idiots grandstanding will lose their seats in Nov.

McSurge says surges are the answer to everything. Surge in drilling, surge in troops, surge in economy ... doesn't surge mean that you go back to where you were before the surge when the surge was over? He is so old its ridiculous.
