Congressman wants to bring up “Paris Hilton plan”

Rep. Michael Burgess things the 'Paris Hilton plan' for energy should be considered.
Rep. Michael Burgess things the 'Paris Hilton plan' for energy should be considered.

CAPITOL HILL (CNN) - The lines between celebrity and politician blurred into a haze Thursday at a Republican news conference, as one congressman began pushing Paris Hilton's “plan” on energy.

"Let's bring up the Paris Hilton plan," goaded Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Texas.

Burgess and his fellow Republicans are in day five energy speeches on the House floor, despite the fact that the chamber is closed for August recess. They're trying to pressure House Speaker Nancy Pelosi into holding a vote on offshore oil drilling.

As they plan for another week of House protest, those Republicans have found an unlikely ally and publicity magnet in Hilton. The model and actress launched a parody campaign commercial earlier this week, suggesting a hybrid of energy plans from presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain

"We can do limited offshore drilling, with strict environmental oversight," the heiress suggested in an animal print bathing suit, "while creating tax incentives to get Detroit making hybrid and electric cars."

"Even Paris Hilton had an energy plan that she's talking about," said Burgess, seizing a chance to make Democrats look lackluster on the issue.

The Texas congressman tried to put Hilton in the Republican camp, claiming her words mirrored current GOP legislation known as the "No More Excuses Energy Act". But, while that proposal does allow offshore drilling, a congressional summary shows it does not contain tax credits to encourage new automobile technology.

And that keeps Hilton, strangely, in the centrist chair on energy. A centrist, poolside lounge chair

Her plan is better than Obama's, at least she is willing to drill.

The cold reality is that we cannot continue to consume energy at this level. An expansion of renewable energy and offshore drilling will not lower energy prices anytime soon. What candidates need to be talking about is alternatives to driving (busses, trains, bicycles, etc.) so they don't have to consume so much oil in the first place.

As much as I hate to say it, Paris and Rep. Burgess are right. For political reasons. I am in no way endorsing off shore drilling, and the claim that it will make us energy independent. However, the only way to break this logjam in the congress is to allow it in a bill that also calls from drastic infastructure and alternative energy investment. Paris is just saying exactly what everyone in Washington knows is true, but can't suggest because they are politicians.

Paris' plan is what the general population has known for years now. Shame that neither party pays attention.

No one seems to realize how much damage Pelosi is doing to the party. Way more than any Hillery supporters. Her and her power plays. I was a Dem for yrs. Then went Independent leaning Dem. But There will not be a Democratic vote from me as long as she and Obama are in the picture. They have enough ego and arrogance to cover everyone in this country and then some. They are scary with the power they are throwing around and will kill this America that we have all grown up to love and respect through think and thin, war and peace.
To bad Pelosi can't be impeached.

HELLO REPUBLICANS AND MCCAIN!!!!! The commercial was written by Funny or Die for Paris. Give me a Break!!!! Obama's Energy Plan just introduced a compromised position on off shore drilling as long as it's environmentally safe but McCain said it was a bad idea. So now Republican's are going to support "Paris Hilton's position" (I use that statement lightly) over Obama's Energy Plan. OMG!!!!!

Now the republicans are truly making a fool out of this very important election.

Celebrity is defined as:1. a famous or well-known person.
    2. fame; renown.
Does this not include McCain? or has no one heard of him?

When oil prices are high – it is Bush's fault. When they have dropped almost 30.00 to the barrel, price is falling on it's own.

Of course not because Bush lifted the moratorium, not because Republican leadership is trying to force a debate.

It's probably because of the "Grand Speach " at Berlin. Why are you fixated on Paris ? Feeling bad that she trumped your guy, by having an energy policy, and not quick enough to get Hillary's ?

Dems should be sorry that they dropped Hillary ? The lady who's republican father has taught her, some hard nosed truths about market economy.

McCain does not have anything to say even on his add. We know him always crying about media attention and when he has it he talk about Obama. Media putting Obama under microscope and they can not find anything and now all I see McCain TV add for free in all the stations. McCain is follower and Obama is the leader. He had all week to talk about energy and all he said all the above is my plan he never give any $ or brake down on his plan he said “ALL THE ABOVE “he means Obama plans. Please ask him what his plans are about the war he just says we need to win just like a child not just like a leader. Senator Obama is a leader young like Kennedy and Celebrity like Ragan

Why do dems keep saying it will take 3 to 5 years to get any oil out of the offshore sites? They have been blocking even a vote on offshore drilling for the last 20 years. We need it all, except taking corn away from the food supply, new drilling, wind solar and biofuels from cellulose that we and the rest of the world don't need for food. And yes we need to conserve and $4 gas has been the best conservation tool to come along in a long time!

For you idiots (like Still for Hill) that question why Obama hasn't debated McCain, it's because the Democratic Convention has not nominated Obama yet. But, as usual, you can't have it both ways. If Obama were out there debating McCain, those same idiots would be saying, "who does he think he is, he hasn't secured the nomination yet". Do a little homework before opening your pieholes.

Rome became a world leader by taking innovative ideas, from any source, and adapting them, which in turn made for the greater good. Who cares where an idea came from if it is viable and good. Our politicians owe it to the nation to be better than mediocre. What we have now is clearly not working so it's time to try something new. The DNC and GOP are just two sides of the same coin.

These house Republicans are about as dumb as a "box of rocks". Don't they realize that Paris Hilton essentially repeated Obama's revamp energy plan of allowing some offshore drilling with environmental restrictions as part of a broad energy policy with plans of re-tooling American automakers so they can create efficient and affordable hybrid and electric cars.

Are any you political dummies even listening to the presidential candidates current energy platforms?!?!

What next, our Congressional body will be adopting Mel Gibson's and Kramer's mentality on race relations, better yet let's call Branjolena or Brittney and get parenting advice from them....no no wait, let's appoint Rush Limbaugh and Nicole Richey head of the DEA. No better than that let's appoint Amy Winehouse head of the FDA. And Texas elected this guy, wow!

I keep hearing this "68 million acres not being drilled" being tossed around by liberals as the reason to refuse to open up off-shore drilling. As a thinking person, I have to ask this question: "what reason is given by the companies holding the leases (for which they pay quite a bit of money) for not drilling and making even more money off the oil they would get?"

Could it possibly be because the lands that are leased are low quality/low quantity and not worth the effort at this point in time? These 68 million acres may someday be cost effective – when the price of oil is high enough to justify the investment that is required to extract it.

The sad thing is that the media is not doing it's job of showing BOTH sides of this story. Thank goodness we have the ability to do our own research to be informed on issues like this where the liberals (or conservatives) who control the information being broadcast are cherry-picking what to share.
