Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick apologized but a federal judge ordered him jailed for violating the terms of his bond.
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick apologized but a federal judge ordered him jailed for violating the terms of his bond.

(CNN) — A judge Thursday ordered Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick jailed after determining he violated terms of his bond by taking an unauthorized trip to Canada last month.

Kilpatrick, who is facing felony charges of perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct of office, has been free on $75,000 bond. He has been snarled in a public scandal since January, when the Detroit Free Press reported that he had exchanged romantic text messages with his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, indicating the two were involved in an affair. He and
Beatty, testifying last fall in a whistle-blower trial, had denied they had been having an affair.

Kilpatrick attorney Jim Parkman said an immediate appeal is planned. He noted that Kilpatrick's trip "wasn't a personal trip over there to go to Caesar's Palace and play" but a trip on Detroit business.

"He believes it was the right thing to do, and on the spur of the moment, he just went," Parkman told reporters.

A Nightingale craps on Berkley Square   August 7th, 2008 3:53 pm ET

Nightingale, what have you been smoking? This guy has got nothing to do with Obama and there's no racism involved. You must be one of those types that Obama was talking about. You know, the ones that take pride in being ignorant.

carlo   August 7th, 2008 3:47 pm ET

I don't approve of what Kilpatrick is doing at all, but I don't like the tone of this discussion. Just because Kilpatrick is black and an Obama supporter does not mean that Obama is just like him or that they have anything in common. If that's the case, let's tie Bush and McCain, two people who actually have been "buddies", even closer together.

INDEPENDENT NYC   August 7th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

At a time when Detroit is loosing jobs, can't balance its budget, its houseing market is one of the worst among a nation with a generally poor housing market and 10/s of thousands of dollars are being used to bring a man to trial because he may have lied about having sex wtih a co-worker.

This is a priority of the local government???

Banned from CNN   August 7th, 2008 3:44 pm ET

Wow, Clinton gets impeached over a sex act. Kilpatrick being charged with a felony for lieing about a sex act.

Bush, commits 40 seperate impeachable offenses against the Constitution and nothing.

Dems, I agree go back to Congress. Not for the charade of the up/down vote the Republicans threw together on "their" energy plan,

But how about coming through with your promises

IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY AND SEND ROVE TO JAIL!

Daryl from Seattle   August 7th, 2008 3:40 pm ET

I'm a black man and regardless of this man's ethnicity agree that he deserves what he is getting. He's a major screw up and I'm not sure how or why Detroit allowed him to represent their city as mayor.

But all of you posters trying to link this individual, independent, MAN to Obama as a means of mud slinging are pathetic and ignorant. How would you like it if I compared every older white man on here to Bush as a means of pointing out how unfit for a leadership position you are? Chew on that.

I'll tell you why these people are blogging about Obama on an article that's totally not about Obama. These people are plants. They are repugs trying to sway public opinion any way they can. I heard that the McCain Campaign is paying people to get their talking points out online. He is paying bloggers to blog about him.
I am starting to believe that alot of these people are fake. When ever they criticize Obama they do so with little to no substance. They too are having a difficult time portraying Obama in a negative light. So they just make stuff up or they say I'M VOTING FOR MCCAIN…because Hillary lost or something.

This is one of the first times an African-American politician has does some stupid stuff like this(You can name them on one, maybe two hands) and you all are using it to defame an entire race and a presidential candidate. There have been scores of white mayors, governors, and senators who have done far worse only to be displayed on page 3 or 4 of a local paper. You dont see them labeled trash or see comments like 'typical'. The same hypocrites who re-elected Bush and put our country in the state it is in now are the same hypocrites who are wiling to sacrifice their future and their children's future to vote for someone who is against everything they believe in. And for what? Spite? You all should check yourselves because you should be ashamed. Sometimes I wonder what the role of media outlets are when they claim to moderate these very same comments. What is this Mayor’s connection with Obama? Is he because he is a democrat, black, man, ….? Why do you allow such hate to be spewed through your medium? I am white and I live in Michigan, I think that it was a mistake for anyone to have voted for the current mayor but why link him with Obama. No matter how you look at it, Obama has done what a lot of you losers cannot even dream of. He rose from nothing (virtually) and today he is running for the highest office in the land. If you had any sense, the story of this trailblazer should be something you should encourage your children about. Tell them look, you too can be something. The story should bee told of how two years ago he still had school loans?????? I really pity the future of this country with the amount of hate that the media helps to espouse. I know my comments might be “moderated” but think about what you are doing?

It appears it's a never ending cycle of white hate but what's new. If a person of a darker shade than them messes up……….whooooooooooa nelly better bring out the white sheets. What inflammatory comments on here but yet people say well we have no more racism in the us. Look whatever kilpatrick did is on him and his shoulders but why blame or tie Obama to it instantly. As if Mccain doesn't have crooks around him or (excuse me) bad politicians. Just because of your stupidity, ethnic ignorance and plain fears you say Obama is dangerous and tie the man to worse things. Hey look if you don't like him cool. I don't think bashing him because of what others around him have done is the answer. Use your power when november rolls in. All of you cowardly people(white, black, latino) leave a disgusting aroma in the air of our "free" country. Look we know neither of them are Angels and both have recanted things. Let's not tie all of their backers actions directly to them. Watch for what happens come November it won't be long. Politics is a dirty game and really seems to devide us as Americans on the agendas and platforms they throw at us. I pray the best person wins regardless of party. Hopefully you fearmongers will quit reading into a lot of the sensationalism in the media about Obama. How distasteful it is to see you cower behind words because you fear him winning. The world is watching us and if we can't be civil then why call ourselves a nation.

I am sure millions of Americans share my distaste for this tacky behavior on the part of elected officials. Apparently, after all these years, they've learned little from the Gary Hart implosion as a result of stuff like this.

The facts are trivial unless favoritism and personal gain are involved. And I note it's the men in politics that can't seem to control themselves - nothing new there. But nonetheless repulsive.

The city is short on cash, laying off workers and car manufacturing is down and they are spending ten's of thousands of dollars because some lied about whether or not he or she had sex with a co-worker. No crime other than that lie that anyone, I repeat, anyone would tell, if it were a lie. Am I the only one or is there a sense of lost priorities here.

Joe Kiloz   August 7th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Is Obama jettisoning this guy ?

Chris   August 7th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

Another corrupt Democrat. Amazing. I used to be a Democrat until bubba's purgery and now Pelosi's idiocy. I am so SICK of the crap the dems are pulling it is a wonder that anyone with a brain ever votes for a dem ever again.

Cleveland just got raided ny the FBI and the IRS. Another town sinking into oblivion all caused by Democrats. When will people learn? They are NOT out to help you. Because if they did truly and actually help you you wouldn't need them anymore.

Get a clue people. for yours you in Michigan have elected Democrat after Democrat and look what it has done to your state.

ryan   August 7th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

Why don't ya'll include his politial party in here - Democrat.

Bet if he was Republican the article would have started

"A judge Thursday ordered Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, Republican, jailed after determining he violated terms of his bond by taking an unauthorized trip to Canada last month"

Left wing hacks…

An American   August 7th, 2008 12:41 pm ET

CNN forgot to add that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, A DEMOCRAT, was jailed after he violated terms of his bond by taking an unauthorized trip to Canada last month.

Lance   August 7th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

I live in the city of Detroit and I feel this is sooooooooo embarrasing for our city. I believe that this entire jail issue could have pended until the PGA Championship in Bloomfield Hills which is 15 miles away from downtown. Now the entire world will see the problems we continue to go through.

Autos, Crime, Employement, Insurance Red Lining….et

Message to the world: Detroit is great city……but when you see these types of issues it is a shame and very diffuicult to hold my head high after this.

Kathryn Irby - Metairie, LA   August 7th, 2008 12:38 pm ET

Good! Probably just another cooked politician wasting taxpayers' money! Throw him in the slammer!

Donovan   August 7th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

Kwame is making Detroit and the entire state of Michigan a laughing stock. He believes he is above the law … or in fact IS the law! This attitude is much like current Bush/Cheney administration. What is evident is that he and his family are the most corrupt politicians in the entirety of the United States … well, maybe not more than the aforementioned Bush/Cheney regime. The sad thing is that there's no good way to get rid of him. He fights everything tooth and nail, costing the taxpayers millions of dollars in the process. He also does have the support of people who put way too much emphasis on race. The minute you do anything against him, there's a cry of racism. It's a sad, sad situation.

m.s.   August 7th, 2008 12:36 pm ET

divided we fail. . . .

Hans-Erik Iken   August 7th, 2008 12:35 pm ET

No matter what the reason the law applies to all. If you break it you get punished.

A person in a position of authority should have better judgement and should be held to a higher standard then a regular civilian. Therefor he should get his punsihment and accept it gracefully.

I just hope the same standard will be applied to the criminal occupying the White House at the moment…..

George   August 7th, 2008 12:33 pm ET

I am sure he will some how make this a race issue.

Finally someone held this wimp accountable. The law is the law no matter who you are.

Chris, Middletown, CT   August 7th, 2008 12:32 pm ET

Why have rules for anyone…..because they shouldn't apply to the Mayor….its like when Bill Clinton perjured himself….I mean there should be a law that you can lie under oath if you want to….

Amazing country we live it huh?

Geez...   August 7th, 2008 12:24 pm ET

It's clearly obvious that this man thinks he is above the law and also lies. I'm glad the judge is granting no special consideration.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick apologized but a federal judge ordered him jailed for violating the terms of his bond.

Mary   August 7th, 2008 12:17 pm ET

It is about time they treated him like the rest of the people who are charged with a crime.

He is so arrogant. However, people who live in Detroit are not very educated and will most likely re-elect him. Just like they did his raciest mother.

He is the type of person that will always come out smelling like a rose.

Take notice America. Kwame is young, not alot of experience, everyone loved him. Remind you of anyone. Look to the Presidents race. Don't be fooled by Obama.

This guy is a crook and has been raping the city of Detroit for years. One can only hope he will wind up being found guilty and go to jail for years. Then perhaps the city will be able to grow and prosper rather than sink farther into ruin.

This man seems very defiant in his comments and actions.
Not living in Detroit, I wonder however if he is a good mayor forthis city that faces such hardships. If he is, cut some slack and let him govern and work out a deal on his charges or postpone them until he he out of office.
If he is not doign the job, then he should be removed, replaced and let the city focus on getting healthier. The people of Detroit shuld be the first concern and the last.

Chuck, Montgomery, AL   August 7th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

He depends on his mama in DC to bail him out of all his devious activities. He needs to be impeached (if that is possible). A rotten mayor setting a bad example to other politicians and to kids everywhere.

deborah jean palfrey, DC   August 7th, 2008 11:57 am ET

Jack cafferty doesn't have his own program on CNN for good reasons:

he's NOT beholden to the neo-con camp.

he said yesterday to the slimy blitzer's face:

"Iraqis didn't ask us to invade theri country, bomb their infrastructure, and kill / maim / torture / humiliate / traumatize their people, and

the democrats in congress did nothing to stop the war as mandated by the people through 2006 election and every polls, and have the nerve to be outraged by the iraq's oil money surplus."

the majority of this dumb nation also believe that the iraqis should pay for our destruction of their country!

jack, you're too smart and righteous for your own good!

CNN, you disgust me!

California Gold   August 7th, 2008 11:57 am ET

He believes it was the right thing to violate an order of the court so he just went on his trip and blew off the judge. The mayor who took an oath figured on a whim, just a lark, to violate an order of the court.

This folks is a lawyer's nightmare client come true.

They may have to repaint the courtroom after the judge finishes flaming out.

Jesse   August 7th, 2008 11:56 am ET

I did not have sexual relations with that woman….opps wrong guy. They need to lay off this guy, really, who doesn't have a girl on the side in 2008? In that case most marriages are a joke. If him sleeping with a woman outside of his marriage helps create hunger and hike up gas prices then yes lets jail this man. But lets be honest him sleeping around with other women does not do anything to hurt Detroit, America, or anybody but his own family.

susie   August 7th, 2008 11:56 am ET

ProudToBeDemocrat   August 7th, 2008 11:47 am ET

I wonder what the judge would of ordered if Kilpatrick was a white man. My guess is a slap in his hand and let him free. The standard for black person is 5 times higher than a white person, when will America change?. I am still hopeful some day.

Jack   August 7th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Kiah   August 7th, 2008 11:47 am ET

Foreign Observer   August 7th, 2008 11:47 am ET

"snarled in a public scandal"? aren't all scandals public? and, by the way, "snarl" means "a facial expression, where the upper lip is raised, and the nostrils widen, generally indicating hate, anger or pain."

Jason   August 7th, 2008 11:46 am ET

Finally a politician who doesn't get preferential treatment. Any other person being accused of what Kwame Kilpatrick is being accused of, would not have a job. How can politicians still hold their jobs while facing major charges is beyond me. I understand they are innocent until proven guilty, but sometimes putting someone in jail is the right thing. He thinks he is above the law and will get away with it. Larry Craig thought so, Ted Stevens thinks so and now this clown. They should never hold a public office ever again!!

Oh! The Irony   August 7th, 2008 11:46 am ET

John McCain wants to be a fiscal conservative president. You do the math.

Craig Shaver   August 7th, 2008 11:42 am ET

Kwame apparently does a lot of things on the "spur of the moment". Part of being a good leader is making "spur of the moment" decisions that are also correct decisions or something reasonably close. This guy couldn't find his backside with both hands and written directions. He should have been told to stay in Canada.

GOOD!

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   August 7th, 2008 11:37 am ET

Not sure why this on the ticker, but must be trying to show the connection between black politicians and lying? Same as Spitzer's replacement I guess. Won't affect him though, his supporters don't see this as anything wrong. Has the morals of an alley cat, but that is 'personal' and doesn't affect his political life, right? Hmmphh..

Jackie, DC   August 7th, 2008 11:36 am ET
