WASHINGTON (CNN) – John McCain’s campaign announced Thursday night that it’s returning about $50,000 in contributions believed to be brought in by a foreign citizen.

The actions late Thursday followed a move earlier in the day by the campaign that it would be looking at hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations brought in by Florida businessman Harry Sargeant, after reports that his business partner – Mustafa Abu Naba’a, who is not an American citizen – may have been connected with the fundraising efforts.

Federal campaign finance regulations prohibit donations from foreign nationals, but federal laws do not specify if it is illegal for them to solicit political contributions.

The McCain campaign says Abu Naba’a did not donate the money himself. But McCain spokesman Brian Rogers says, "we're taking the precautionary measure of returning any contributions solicited by Mr. Abu Naba'a. We thought it was an appropriate measure to take at this point, as we had an issue with the reports of people giving to the campaign who had no intention of supporting or voting for John McCain - that was clear from recent reports. We estimate that it totals under $50,000."

The New York Times reported on Thursday that Sargeant allowed Abu Naba’a to solicit the donations in March from a single extended family in California, the Abdullahs, along with their friends.

The McCain campaign is also sending a copy of the legal requirements for donations to all contributors whose funds were brought in through Sargeant.

Earlier this year, during the primary season, Norman Hsu, who was a top fundraiser for Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, was indicted for making contributions in the names of other people.

Uh oh. Abu naba? Does this mean the Arabs support McCain.does this mean McCain is an anti Israel secret Muslim? Does it Mr. Hannity? Mr. Limbaugh? I'm so sick of the double standard.

William Raymond   August 8th, 2008 1:13 am ET

Why doesn't the media talk about McCain's Islamic connections? And the fact that McCain is getting money from a foreigner is probably because he himself was not born in the United States of America.

I used to support the old John McCain, but now I will vote for anyone except John McCain, even if it means voting for a democrat.

Bill   August 8th, 2008 1:05 am ET

How about we ALL start cutting both McCain and Obama some slack and give them the benefit of the doubt. I truly believe both of them are honorable men who are trying to do the right thing in a VERY complex set of circumstances. How about we look for the GOOD behavior from each of the candidates and vote for which one we think would be best rather than strictly cynically dissect the actions of the "other guy" and blog until the cows come home??

How about returning the Exxon Money given to your campaign?

That way I might believe your not carrying water for mega oil enablers who have no interest in alternate energy options, but rather to continue the addiction.

Where are the Fox folks? Can you believe that a top Mccain supporter and fundraiser will have a Muslim for a friend?

Brad - California   August 8th, 2008 12:25 am ET

Oh my goodness, what a shock. I wonder why someone named Mustafa Abu Naba’a would be sneaking money into the McCain campaign. Poor John, he could have used it if only no one knew! But I'msure there's a good deal of quiet money flowing from oil into John's campaign.

Marc PDX   August 8th, 2008 12:00 am ET

LOL! The Barackiddies are all worried about McCain. Meanwhile they don't seem to have realized it yet but they are in the process of being outflanked by the Clintons! Hillary is going to call for her delegates to be counted – including ALL of them (not half of them) from Florida and Michigan (which Obama foolishly agreed to earlier this week). AND the Clintons are busy flipping enough super-delegates right now to pull the nomination away from Obama at the Democratic Convention. Just watch – we've never seen a comeback story like this before but that's what the Clinton's are doing as we speak. Obama is too weak to hold on against the Clintons and the super-delegates are realizing it as McCain is pacing him in the polls. This will be an historic Democratic National Convention. How can I get tickets to that stadium?

Nah, I'm glad McCain is doing the right thing here at least and that's all he realistically can do other than to be careful and have a proper disclaimer.
My concern is more of the supposed bundler of blue collar workers. It's hard to buy average wage workers maxing out. That's 2,300 bucks each which is probably a lot for a mechanic or a server to pay to get screwed.

Excuse me, but McCain back in March chose not to go see our wounded troops (while oversease) to go to a political fundraiser thrown by a British lord for him.

Well , lets follow Obama's money trail .
No doubt one would find some , if not more , questionable donations.
It's time the 'black churches' are investigated. The rumors are rife that millions are being funnelled through these so called 'tax havens' from outside sources.
Lets call this election for what it has become, an Abama 'cult mentality'. In other words, he has no intellectual deptth except charisma. Ladies and Gentlemen, today, charisma and nothing else will not give the confidence of security that the 'free world' expects from the United States. Obama is no more than a 'preacher'. Remember, Rev. Wright was his mentor for twenty years!
Of course, cultists will hear nothing that challenges their believe!.

Don Colony14Author   August 7th, 2008 11:06 pm ET

Both sides are guilty of accepting improper contributions from foreigners, but it appears that the Obama camp is taking in far more of them – and not returning them as McCain has done. Obama's records show an amazingly large number of contributions in strange amounts, like $72.47, which are indicative of "even" amounts that become "odd" after being converted from foreign currency. Obama has his own share of money to return, like contributions from Hamas member in the Gaza strip. Obama's web site has absolutely no controls to prevent foreign contributions, and it shows from a review of the records reviewed so far by astute reporters (i.e., reporters that don't work for CNN or the New York Times.)

CNN posts this story about contributions to McCain from foreigners, yet nothing about Obama's similar, and larger, problem. No wonder people think CNN is in the tank for the dems.

Cheryl   August 7th, 2008 11:02 pm ET

This is not the first time McCain has been involved in shady fundraising schemes. If people knew his real history they'd see that straight talking all American image is just a front he concocted a long time ago to further his political career. The real McCain is an anything-to-get-what-I-want bully.

Mary In AL   August 7th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

Alex, USMC   August 7th, 2008 10:54 pm ET

The real question for me remains whether anyone in the media will actually go in and ask the hard questions to see if this is really a case of "precautionary measures" or a question of somebody getting caught with their hand in the cookie jar.

Sure, media outlets can let this rest and tell themselves they've done their job by reporting it...but wouldn't it be great for the American people if someone actually investigated what goes on behind the scenes?

SWG   August 7th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

McCain can not help who sends him donations. But he can do the rightful thing and return donations that he feels are inappropriate.

Obama has decided not to accept public funding so that he can keep his contributors secret – although we know that he is gleefully accepting contributions from foreign lands, vis a vis his recent trips to China and Germany to raise dollars.

How come the Obama fans are not requiring their candidate to do the noble thing and either accpet public financing or not accept contributions from foreigners (including Huffington, Soros and Kos).

This is outrageous   August 7th, 2008 10:45 pm ET

McCain is a crook, and it says in all in that sneaky half-dimwit smile he has; which is insincere and condesending. Senator Obama has already told everyone that he has taken in excess of 2 million from the oil companies for his campaign (and clinbing). But NO, no one wants to believe Senator Obama! McCain is in lockstep with Bush, WHICH INCLUDES RIPPING OFF AMERICANS ALONG WITH THE BIG OIL COMPANIES FOR THEIR OWN GAIN. What disgusts me is when McCain is "caught red-handed", the media excuses it, sweeps it under the rug and searches for things to criticize Senator Obama about. It's ridiculous how much bad press McCain is allowed to get away with, with only a slap on the wrist, but everyone stands ready to demonize Senator Obama. It's RIDICULOUS!

John McCain's campaign says it is returning tens of thousands of dollars in contributions solicited by a foreign citizen.

The move follows the disclosure that the money was being raised by a Jordanian man who is a business partner of prominent Florida Republican Harry Sargeant III.

The McCain campaign says some of the people solicited by Mustafa Abu Naba'a had no intention of supporting McCain for president.

Campaign spokesman Brian Rogers says "that just didn't sound right to us" so the money is being returned.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP) _ John McCain's campaign began on Thursday to review donations brought in by the prominent head of a Florida oil trading company following disclosures that his business partner, a foreign citizen, also may have engaged in fundraising.

The campaign is looking into hundreds of thousands of dollars in contributions to make sure that they are appropriate, a spokesman said.

Sienna, TX   August 7th, 2008 7:33 pm ET

While they're at it, let them review their questionable candidate who doesn't speak for his own campaign. Also let them review why an old man picks on a young woman who's parents gave him money for his stupid campaign and tries to joke it off as if something is funny. They should also review why John is backing away from laughing at tire gauges.

Yeah, they need to review lots of questionable issues. Good luck.

biffington, biff   August 7th, 2008 7:25 pm ET

Funny, CNN.. how you conveniently did not mention that the money is coming from "middle-eastern" non citizens...

but this comment, like so man more today.. will never see the light of day.

probably a little too "newsy" for your news organization.

Valerie   August 7th, 2008 7:24 pm ET

Oh hell, they're all questionable. He's going to review the ones that reporters are working on. He's a 27 year politician who will say and do anything.

keating five and now this.

In case you didnt know   August 7th, 2008 7:19 pm ET

The tax cut for the wealthy funded China's growth to American workers detriment. Rather than invest it here they invested in China to build the plants that took away American jobs. Now those same foreign workers who are buying cars are driving up the price of gasoline.

The tax break was a double wammy for American workers. Not only was the capital used to outsource their jobs but now the oil demands by the low wage employees who tooks those jobs is pushing up fuel prices and creating more misery and unemployment.

The wealthy tax break is a job eating ebola virus to the American economy. John McCain thinks this is wonderful.

Anonymous   August 7th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

mccain is not good for america he talks about energy and he voted against every bill that came to the senate floor, and he calls his wife blue chip what kind of man is this.

The Preacher   August 7th, 2008 7:12 pm ET

This is the same guy who was a part of the Keating Five Savings and Loan Scandle ...what would you expect?

Charles Keating was convicted of racketeering and fraud in both state and federal court after his Lincoln Savings & Loan collapsed, costing the taxpayers $3.4 billion. His convictions were overturned on technicalities; for example, the federal conviction was overturned because jurors had heard about his state conviction, and his state charges because Judge Lance Ito (yes, that judge) screwed up jury instructions. Neither court cleared him, and he faces new trials in both courts.)

Though he was not convicted of anything, McCain intervened on behalf of Charles Keating after Keating gave McCain at least $112,00 in contributions. In the mid-1980s, McCain made at least 9 trips on Keating's airplanes, and 3 of those were to Keating's luxurious retreat in the Bahamas. McCain's wife and father-in-law also were the largest investors (at $350,000) in a Keating shopping center; the Phoenix New Times called it a "sweetheart deal."

Really?   August 7th, 2008 7:11 pm ET

I guess we will only know the result of that after he is the President.

lu/nyc   August 7th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

McCain does not care one way or another.

KG   August 7th, 2008 6:57 pm ET

Both sides should review them. I guarantee you that both sides have questionable donations. Obama has them and McCain has them AND they shouldn't be allowed!

Although I do find it interesting that CNN has chosen to only point out that McCain is reviewing them. Can you be any more more transparent in your partisanship? It's truly laughable. Independent news organization my rear. CNN is (and has been) in the pocket of the liberal Democratic party since it began its first newscast.

maggymay   August 7th, 2008 6:17 pm ET

It is my sincere hope that this will be thoroughly investigated by the press now! McCain has gotten away with so much so far in this election season. Ignore this, and it will be obvious that CNN and MSNBC in addition to NBC, ABC, and CBS are all in the tank for McCain. He is playing fast and loose with the truth, so this is not surprising. We wil be watching!

Mike in MN   August 7th, 2008 6:14 pm ET

Looks like McCain is taking the high road on this. Deifintly a man of integrity.

LLMTruth   August 7th, 2008 6:12 pm ET

Now all of a sudden, McBrainless wants an internal investigation into this Sargeant's illegal contributions. It seems it took Federal intervention before McBrainless realized that there was any impropriety in those contirbutions. I wonder if there weren't any questions into any illegalities, would McBrainless even say anything at all?

It just points to the fact that the republican's candidate has no character nor integrity. Voting for this man would be an absolute waste of energy. Why don't people just vote Dubya in for a third term and be done with it?

Pat Riot   August 7th, 2008 6:07 pm ET

Uncle Sam, maybe you don't know the history behind your name. You're not an American mascot. You're a creation of the state, a symbol for big government, a reminder of the military draft. Yet here you are criticizing a war hero and civil servant. Obama has twisted your mind.

Joel   August 7th, 2008 5:58 pm ET

Clearly there are crooks in the background supporting the McCain campaign.

John McCain is confused, showing signs of dementia and is mindlessly spouting dirty politics talking points from corrupt Republicans. Another four years of Bush would totally destroy our country and this is what the American people would get with McCain. For the sake of our country, we must make sure that Barack Obama is elected President.

susie   August 7th, 2008 5:56 pm ET

Someone should look into Obama's questionable donations, too.

Will we ever get the truth regarding McCain and his "donors"...NOT

Rob, from Canada   August 7th, 2008 5:48 pm ET

Don't worry, John McCain doesn't care about illegal immigrants coming into the country, that's why he support the legislation with Ted Kennedy to give them amnesty.

This does nothing to change the image Republicans should have if they were fully informed about their candidate.

Wait they probably aren't fully informed?

marty from Indiana   August 7th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

If you believe that I have some swamp land in Florida I'd like to sell you. He will use the money and run "cut and burn" ads against Obama. McCain is shameless.

True Blue   August 7th, 2008 5:45 pm ET

McCain is getting such a free ride.

This guy dumped his first wife after she gained weight from car wreck injuries and wears 500 dollar shoes....

if this were Obama, people would be screaming about it over and over.

Sylvia   August 7th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Problem with McCain contributors????? Why is everyone so surprised.....He'll do anything to get elected, no matter how dishonest.

Tammy - KCMO   August 7th, 2008 5:40 pm ET

Pretty funny stuff considering how many times the Republicans have spread those rumors about Obama's online campaign raising.

Guess what goes around does come around.

Deidre, Birmingham   August 7th, 2008 5:33 pm ET

What about the secretary (who makes $61k annuallyworking at the oil firm) who made her and her husband's first political donation ever – $2600 to McCain and a whopping $57,000 to the RNC. Her boss made the same donation the same day. The next week McCain switched his position on offshore drilling. Suspicious much?!!

If you think offshore drilling is going to help anyone except the oil companies, you are fool who does not understand the world market.

Peter E   August 7th, 2008 5:32 pm ET

It's considerably more vigilant than the Obama 'I'm only taking donations from state lobbyists, not federal ones' campaign is doing...

Rob   August 7th, 2008 5:28 pm ET

Uh huh, watch this one closely folks. These are the donations made by low level employees of 'Hess Oil' where they made Fifty Thousand Dollar donations out of the goodness of there hearts. Donations in excess of their salaries. Stinks like rotten McFish.

WWooooooPPPPsss... The OLD BUCKAROO is now going to tell us that he didn't know Mr Sargeants donors ( he's called a bundler folks) thats some one who collects money from people who don't want to be identified with a candidate OR are of questionable origin birth place or citizenship but want to influence our politics... According to Mr. Sargeant he has "a lot of Arab business partners and does a lot of business in the middle east" . Now I just wonder WHO is taking money from foreign sources. Could it possibly be that old Senator from Arizona who wants to be President of the United States of Arabia OOOPPPPs again.... America? NNNAAAAAHHHH!!!! MC BUSH WOULDN'T DO THAT NOW WOULD HE.....

Mark Webb   August 7th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

In that case, McSame would rejects most of his supporters, and from the RNC!!!
What's an HYPOCRITE!!!!!!

Mike in MN   August 7th, 2008 5:23 pm ET

With the way Obama is against drilling offshore, I would not be supprised if he is getting money secretly from big Arab oil.

He does not want America to produce more of our own oil. He says McCain is in the pockets of US big oil because he supports offhore drilling. He wants us to keep buying foreign oil instead of producing more of our own. Would rather give we give our money to big Arab oil instead of big US oil. Anyone wonder about this? Wonder how he is taking in so much more money than Hillary and McCain form supposdly just small doners. But barley beat Hillary in the primary and has just a 2% lead over McCain in the polls. It would take a tremendous amount of small donations to account for the difference in money. Where is the support in the votes?

McCain:SmallWeakCowardlyMan OffersMoreOfTheSame TearsOthersDownToBuildHimselfUp   August 7th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

Maybe they should review the questionable candidate and all his dirty, backdoor dealings, his wife's overseas investments, his lobbyist (campaign manager's and staff's) ties to foreign dictators and warlords. Need I go on?

jOhN McCain   August 7th, 2008 5:22 pm ET

THOSE QUESTIONANBLE PEOPLE ARE MY BIG OIL FRIENDS……

My friends.... We need in a surge in Drilling !!!

The Oil company executives have so far contributed $2 million to my campaign.
I recently told them, that if their donations to my campaign reach $100 Million .......and I become President.... I'll sign an Executive Order.....giving Exxon Mobil, Shell, BP & Chevron permission to Drill at the Rose Garden, the Capitol, the Pentagon, Disney-Land, and any other location of their choice.

That, my friends….. is how we get out of the energy crisis.

I'm John McSurge, and I approved this message

Peter E   August 7th, 2008 5:21 pm ET

Well, at least McCain is willing to review his own campaign. Obama only reviews McCain's campaign, and then behind closed doors still continue to accept money from 'state' lobbyists and oil companies who just happen to have multi-million lobbying business in Washington...

Peter E   August 7th, 2008 5:20 pm ET

Just wait and see a week when Obama announces he's following suit... and then his supporter's spin on it declaring Obama a 'visionary' Isn't it time Obama returned the $400,000 he got from oil companies, since he seems to hate them so much?

michael, Gladstone, MO   August 7th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

Now, McCain did read that law that bears his name, right?

While I don't think it is the senator's fault that the donations were allegedly done the way they were reported, once his camp looks into it they should immediately take action. Early reports said that the amounts from some donors were grossly in excess of limits. This kind of thing could have a huge impact on McCain's campaign and reputation in particular.

tamera   August 7th, 2008 5:16 pm ET

Surely the so called "Maverick", would not take hundreds of thousands of dollars for his campaign from a foreigner. Sounds like McCain is a Clone of Bush..............

The most "questionable" donations are the millions of dollars that poured in from the oil industry after McCain pushed for offshore drilling.

Joseph in PA   August 7th, 2008 5:00 pm ET

For someone who was so committed to campaign finance reform, Sen. McCain certainly seems to have more than his fair share of questionable fund raising and legal campaign issues.

But then again, he has greatly disappointed me on most fronts turning his back on his independent streak to win the nomination. Taking the low road attacking his opponent with "celebrity" ads rather than telling us why he is the better candidate and what he will do DIFFERENT from President Bush.

He may not be "willing to lose a war to win and election" but he seems perfectly willing to sell out his integrity to do so!

bridgette   August 7th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

WOW!!!!!!!! He is not even in office yet and already has some mess like this. This is just becoming a mess. First never getting facts right, second the two silly commercials, and now this. What's next.

Let him keep his money, he is only using it for comic relief anyway... tire gauges, Hilton and Spears, etc.

He's not campaigning, he's making jokes, which I find disgusting considering the energy crisis, economic crisis, housing crisis, health care problems, etc. It's an outrage, not funny at all.

It would probably be quicker if he sorted out the legal donations. ; )

so that guy (the citizen) lives not too far from me. He is known to have given money to Charlie Christ as well. So does that mean the president and the potential VP have been taking money from people who might not have our best interest on their mind?

He should've done this sooner, honestly, but ah well. I'm an Obama supporter, but I'm glad he's doing this. His reputation with me is shot after the negativity, and this is a band-aid, albeit a small one.

I think we should also review the sources of Obama's donations. Rumor has it that many have come from overseas donors who are citizens of other countries.

Mike, TX   August 7th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Obama's donations should be investigated as well. Most of Obama's donations come from outside the United States. Wonder who is really funding his campaign.....

Nicole In NE   August 7th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

Maybe he should review those donations from that Texas tycoon who made the rape jokes too.

cherrystrawberry   August 7th, 2008 4:26 pm ET

"who is not an American citizen – may have been connected with the fundraising efforts"

PUMA !

Mike   August 7th, 2008 4:21 pm ET

MIght as well review all his donors while their at it. I think you might find some very interesting individuals on the list.

Lady   August 7th, 2008 4:20 pm ET

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS DOES MCCAIN HAVE???

I mean educational qualifications. What college did he attend? What degree does he have? What books has he written by himself not by other authors?what exactly qualifies to him be Commander-in-Chief?

I am not asking about POW.That is not a qualification,it is was his job and what happened happened.

Thanks!
