Sens. McCain and Obama both told Entertainment Weekly that they'd like to be Batman.

(CNN) – They may disagree about a lot of things — but Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama share an affinity for a certain dark superhero.

In an issue of Entertainment Weekly hitting newsstands Friday, both presumptive nominees reveal their pop culture favorites — and it turns out that both men want to be Batman.

“He does justice sometimes against insurmountable odds,” McCain said of the comic book hero. “And he doesn’t make his good works known to a lot of people.”

For his part, Obama told the magazine he would like to be Batman and Spider Man because “they have some inner turmoil.”

“They get knocked around a little bit,” observed Obama.

Issues of age and race — which have hovered over this year’s presidential campaign — also popped up in the discussion of popular culture.

Asked who was his favorite TV or movie president, McCain praised 24’s David Palmer portrayed by actor Dennis Haysbert. “He’s fabulous,” said McCain. “He’s a guy who makes tough decisions, he takes charge, he’s ready to sacrifice his interest on behalf of the interest of the country.”

Reminded that Palmer portrayed the nation’s first African-American president on the television series, the presumptive Republican nominee said “I hope that I and all Americans can be color-blind about any president.”

But McCain also told the magazine that the new Indiana Jones film was the last movie he’d seen. “I enjoyed that so much. The old guys wins,” said McCain, who will be the oldest president to be elected to a first term in the White House if he wins the general election.

"King Obama"

Once again the repub swift boat liars try to paint Obama as an elitist. Mr. McCain who doesn't even know where his twelve houses are and traded up to a new richer model woman while still married to his old wife. His wife is worth $ 100 million plus… and Obama is an elitist?

He's not even a good fighter pilot… how many planes did he lose and how many of the enemy did he shoot down?

Election Watcher,
You are so silly. There is no u before the q in Aquaman. If you don’t know how to spell it, then you shouldn’t use it. Besides, in the comic’s books I remember Aquaman as being half human, half mermaid. He wouldn’t flip or flop either on land, or in the water. Did I mention that he is the ruler of the 7 seas? Ruler of Atlantis? Wow, with leadership qualities like that, maybe he is a lot like Obama.

In a McCain campaign "Economic Communications Plan" that was obtained by the Huffington Post, an aide to the Senator lays out several themes, tactics and objectives to shore up the Arizona Republican's standing on the economy and paint Barack Obama as a "job killing machine."

"Our polling tells us that Americans are still not tuned into what the candidates might do to fix the economy," reads the memo. "We have an opportunity to fill in that gap."

The strategy, which was authored by Taylor Griffin — a veteran of the Bush White House and Treasury Department who serves McCain as a senior adviser — seems built around traditional themes. The McCain campaign will paint Obama as being "aligned with trial lawyers" and "unions (card check, trade, education reform)," and push the frame that he "raises taxes" and "will kill jobs."

In contrast, McCain will be positioned as a bold leader on economic matters, someone who has a "record of taking on corporate interests" and will "fight speculation driving up prices of oil and food" as well as "the lawsuit culture." per Hunt. Press.

Maybe Obama could be Two-Face. You know, everyone's least favorite character that spends twenty years in a racist, anti American Church with a blasphemous preacher, the character who uses the sexism and race cards against his opponets, but cries racism and foul whenever someone doesn't vote for him (because they're automatically racist) and has to flip a coin to see which way he's going to vote that day/time. Offshore drilling or buying oil from his muslim friends in the middle east? Seating Florida and Michigan or continue to punish them until he needs them? Clintons: racist has beens or people I need to help me win? Huge ego or no clear idea what I'm doing, I'll just read from the telepromter and decide! Catch Barack "Two Face" OWhiner in all of his can't believe adventures, with more to come several times a day!

Obama has a lot of inner turmoil and it shows. Why would you want someone as President who has inner turmoil? Obama is still trying to figure out why he is running, I believe he said he got hit on the head by a rock? McCain and Hillary would make a great team. He has tried to cross party lines and Kerry did ask McCain to be his running mate. Why not, an unstopable ticket? Both of these guys could clinch the election with her as their running mate. Todd in Texas: yes, inflating tires WILL save as much gas as drilling. In fact, it will save much more, as you can do it TODAY. Do you know that the government's energy website says that drilling won't yield results until 2030? The Daily Show had a hilarious melange of quotes going downward from 20 years over 6 years over 2-4, 1-2, to McCain's recent "a few months." Don't let yourself be fooled. Oil drilled for in the US is sold on the same market as Saudi oil, and for the same price.

McCain=Two-Face, Obama=Gordon   August 7th, 2008 3:41 pm ET

I think all men want to be a comic book hero, period. It's their inner child still refusing to grow up and wanting to live outside of reality.

The real buzz that Batman is a metaphor for BUSH…. which I believe is incorrect. Batman is our inner turmoil over wanting protection at any cost — it sounds good, but we struggle over the means by which it is achieved.

McCain is more like the Harvey Dent (aka Two-Face)– bitter and not what he appears on the surface (after reconstructive surgery). When pushed, he gets angry and reverts to the Two-Face character, whose main motivation is bitter revenge for perceived injustices TO HIMSELF.

Obama is more like Jim Gordon.

I think its so funny that people are still trying to make fun of Obama for the whole tire inflation thing. Well guess what, he was right. AAA and NASCAR both agree that it would be a step that could help. The best part is John McCain made fun of Obama about this for days. Then when Obama started making fun of McCain for being proud to be ignorant, and then McCain changed his tune. So all of you idiots out there that want to make this a big issue I have only this to say. First earlier this year McCain said we could all turn out the lights five minutes earlier. Is that is energy plan. Second just yesterday McCain specifically said he agrees with Obama that inflating your tires would help. Its on tape check it out. So when you make fun of Obama, you are making fun of AAA, NASCAR, DOT, and yes even MCCAIN.

But if I had my choice of a fictional hero I would like to be… It would be President of the United States so I can do a proper job in saving this country from the hell it is going through. And if the Batman fictional story were be true, Bush, Obama and McCain would be the JOKERS!!

Everyone is asking what is wrong wiyh Obama, but the question should be why would a democrat lose 30% of his base for just winning the dem nomination. It sounds like the party of inclusion is hypocritic.Racism, sexism, and the idea that Hillary is entitled seems to be the problem.I never knew that Hillary or McDrill was president before,I guess this is where they get all of thier experience from.

In point of clarification, depending on the incarnation, Batman is more about vengeance than justice. Batman doesn't do good works, he does bad works against bad people – important difference.

Green Arrow – now HE does good works.

As for the main thrust of the news item – does this count as a break from campain coverage?

Angela - Florida   August 7th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

After the recent poll released yesterday you would think CNN would lay off frivilous news about Obama like this. Hello, most of America is sick of hearing about Obama. The more they show him the more support he loses, they should back off a little! Don't get me wrong, in no way under any circumstance would I ever vote for Obama, other than not having solid plans for help on the economy, the world is in turmoil and I just do not trust him to keep me and my family safe. Think about it, all of our economy and health problems won't mean much if we are not here to have them. The threat of an attack is not a Republican "boogeyman", does anyone in here read articles actualy pertaining to news such as the impeachment of the Packistan leader, Israel's quest to destroy Irans nuclear facilities and Iran's threat to the US, UK , Israel and any other nation that they don't like? Wake up America we are yet again on the verge of more threats.

Another grumpy old white woman for Obama   August 7th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

If Obama has "inner turmoil" it is because he has a conscience and a soul. He is human.
Something McCain is sorely lacking.
This is also true of any Hillary supporter who would vote GOP just to spite Obama. Mindless adoration of another human being is just plain sick. This election is about issues and trying to fix what has gone so wrong with America in the last 10 years. Voting GOP is a death sentence for the economy, for womens hard fought rights, education, fair taxation, healthcare and our respect in the world.
Respect cannot be gained by force. It must be earned. We have all but lost it because of the school yard bully you elected twice. Rather than admit they were wrong ,they will keep being wrong trying to convince themselves they were right.

Ties up congress by submitting bills, then refuses to show up and vote on these "Important' issues while screaming "Get back and vote everyone but me, I am too lazy and too old to go vote".

Obama Rules   August 7th, 2008 1:31 pm ET

Geeeez, so let's recap for just a moment if we may.

We got an administration that lied to congress, America, and the world about the evidence to invade Iraq, that resulted in the death of 1,000,000 people. We have an FBI and that sent government grade anthrax to several locations in America, then covered it up, blamed on a single scientist, and then killed him. We've got companies like Haliburton turning billions of dollars in profits due to an illegal war created by the Bush administration. We have a constitution that has been raped and pilladged routinely by the Bush administration. We have the torture of prisoners by the Bush administration and the treasonous outing if CIA agents by the Bush administration. We have about a million super important issues that need to be discussed before November, etc etc etc. And yet CNN chooses to run a story about which fantasy super hero the candidated relate to most. Way to go CNN, you guys truly are an amazing bunsh. Dana will fit in perfect with the likes of Glenn Beck and the rest of the intellectuals at CNN.

OBAMA 2008!!!

edw   August 7th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

"Our polling tells us that Americans are still not tuned into what the candidates might do to fix the economy," reads the memo. "We have an opportunity to fill in that gap."

The strategy, which was authored by Taylor Griffin — a veteran of the Bush White House and Treasury Department who serves McCain as a senior adviser — seems built around traditional themes. The McCain campaign will paint Obama as being "aligned with trial lawyers" and "unions (card check, trade, education reform)," and push the frame that he "raises taxes" and "will kill jobs."

In contrast, McCain will be positioned as a bold leader on economic matters, someone who has a "record of taking on corporate interests" and will "fight speculation driving up prices of oil and food" as well as "the lawsuit culture."

MMN-Milwaukee WI   August 7th, 2008 1:25 pm ET

It’s August and Hillary has just confirmed to us she’s been involved in the whisper campaign for the DEM nomination and the YouTube clip also confirms the Clintons have been salting the wounds which only confirms why the party is not uniting. Like someone said before, “a Clinton will pat you on the shoulder while they piss down your leg”. They publicly proclaim to support Obama and yet they continue to encourage their supporters to rebel. My $0.02 worth is if Obama wants to steer the DEM party in a new direction then he needs to cut lose the Clintons and build a new DEM party “from the group up “ like he likes putting it. It’s clear:

Can Hillary Help Unite the Party? NO.
Have the Clintons Gotten Over It? NO.

If the Clintons can’t look beyond themselves and spoil the chances of the DEMs getting the presidency in 2008 then they are no different than the current Administration that they so claim to loath.

Do you really want a president who has such bad taste in films that the fourth Indiana Jones was a movie that he "…enjoyed so much." Did he see the film? Really? I'm pretty sure me and my friends were laughing all the way through it because we felt it was the worst movie we'd ever seen (that's an exageration. The list goes 1. Scary Movie Three 2. Ice Age Two 3. Fun With Dick and Jane 4. Indiana Jones Four)

I'm pretty sure the whole movie was fantasy. Lead painted fridges that withstand nuclear blasts (completely unscathed) Alien heads, which are made of crystal, that open a portal to another universe. And old people being successful…

I thought I was in the wrong theatre when the CGI Gopher came up. That's when I realized that Indiana Jones was going to be Amazingly bad.
I thought I was reading the wrong language when John McCain said he really enjoyed Indiana Jones four. That's when I realized John McCain is going to be Amazingly senile.

Inner turmoil? That is a problem I have with Obama. I feel he has a lot of inner turmoil and we, the public, best be leary of. He speaks well, but has spent more time running for office then sitting at his desk, in his office. The majority of his time as a US Senator, has been spent running for the next office. I have no real feel about him, and that makes me nervous.

NELSON Colorado Springs, Co   August 7th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

Jeff   August 7th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

It's a sorry state of affairs when any candidate wishes to become a comic book hero. All I ask for from either candidate is to communicate to the American people his vision of the future, replace fearmongering with the ability to rally all of us to act for the greater good. Instead of telling us that it will take anywhere from 10 to 20 years for a comprehensive energy policy to come to fruition, we need bold leadership, the marshaling of our resources (money, people, technology) and a can do attitude to accomplish an energy goal (and any other goal) within 5 years.

Eyes   August 7th, 2008 1:08 pm ET

CNN chooses very carefully the phrases picked to print that were used by both McCain and Obama to subtly show their preference for McCain. ie, McCain wants to fight evil.

Oh look, does Obama have inner turmoil? This is an incomplete phrase – thought – what was the full context?

I really don't want to see McKeatingFive in spandex and a cape… Obama is kinda dark so i'll go that route. So are the Hill-billy's jokers?!

Clearly our country's leaders watch too much tv.

CNN

These articles read like something out of a child's weekly reader.

Meanwhile, Obama goes unvetted.

Investigative journalism, anyone?

Of course, you will censor this comment.

Give me a break. McCain only said that his favorite TV prez is David Palmer so as not to appear racist. I hear the pitter pander of little/old feet.

Jon Woodyard   August 7th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

Wanting to be a comic book character says a great deal about our presidential candidates. When's the next flight to Mars?

Matt-NE   August 7th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

This is a perfect example of the differences between the two candidates.

McCain wants to be the hero.

Obama wants to be the victim.

America will make the right choice in November.

…..and it WILL NOT BE Obama!

Anon   August 7th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Thanks for spoiling the ending for Indiana Jones for me, JM. I was waiting for it to come out on video. Now you'll never get my vote.

Kelby from Houston, TX   August 7th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

this is one of the rare occasions that CNN.com makes me want to use vulgar language. It also makes me want to pose a question that I believe CNN should ask themselves. WHY IS THIS NEWS?

Other questions i want to ask include, WHY IS THIS HERE? IS IT A SLOW NEWSDAY? WHO IS IN CHARGE OVER THERE THAT ALLOWED THIS TRIPE TO PLACED ON THE TICKER?

Hillary Clinton just told her supporters that they need a "catharsis"…WHY ISN'T THIS STORY ON THE TICKER?

CNN please get your priorities straight. NOBODY CARES WHO THERE FAVORITE FICTIONAL SUPERHERO IS…NOBODY!

Obama supporter"White, 60 year old woman   August 7th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

Why is CNN becoming more like Entertainment Weekly than an objective, newsworthy blog.

Perhaps a better use of these blogs could be to fact check the accuracy of what the ads you run for free are actually.

One wonders what percent of the people voting that Obama was receiving too much press time (research shows 72% being negative) are Obama supporters who are tired of the media giving McCain a free ride. Let's have some scrutiny of this man's campaign statements and constant errors and changes.

David Goldman for OBAMA   August 7th, 2008 1:01 pm ET

MCMORON IS MORE LIKE THE RIDDLER.

HE SPEAKS IN RIDDLES THAT NO ONE BUT

HE, KNOWS EXACTLY WHAT HE MEANS. AND

MOST TIMES, I AM SURE, IT ESCAPES HIM AS WELL.

Chris, Denver CO   August 7th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Why must our political process be cheapened and trivialized with bimbos and comic book heroes? Let's hear what programs they have to improve things around here, not who their favorite superhero is. What next? Pro wrestling?

TonyinKentucky   August 7th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

McCain is more The Joker but you know…that's cool.

How does CNN determine who gets posted?   August 7th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

Batman is cool. But Wolverine is the absolute best superhero of ALL time!!!!

Nick Bustamonte   August 7th, 2008 12:58 pm ET

I can understand why a disgusting publication such as Entertainment Weekly would publish this garbage. However, I was under the impression that CNN made itself out to be a respectable source for news. However, this entry being on the front page of the Web site demonstrates a complete lack of depth or adherence to any kind of journalistic integrity. You people have no shame. Maybe you should enter into a joint-media venture with the Weekly World News. On second thought, they probably have more respect for themselves than to lower their publication to your level. There's an old saying: Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups. Thank you, CNN, for demonstrating the wisdom of that old chestnut.

HE COULD BE STANDING RIGHT IN THE CENTER

what's funny about the movie   August 7th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

Is that it is a conservative movie made after 9/11. A man fighting evil. A man that must sacrifice his own popularity and must use "illegal and moral lacking" means to catch the enemy (spying on cell phones).

Sounds familiar? Sounds like the current administration.

Janice Patoka Illinois   August 7th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

This!! not worthy of comments.

kathryn   August 7th, 2008 12:57 pm ET

This is news? CNN needs to make this news? What about the rebuilding of New Orleans, or the ecomony, or how Ted Kennedy is doing? What about national crime statistics or how our soldiers are doing in the hopital? What abou the national nursing shortage? Can we please stop pandering to these 2 and their every mindless thought? God, I can't wait for the Olympics—at lease we'll have something interesting to listen to. Kathryn Amherst MA

Ken in Dallas   August 7th, 2008 12:56 pm ET

The Batman is a vigilante who violates the law in pursuit of a "higher justice" that he claims the right to unilaterally interpret.

As an imaginary crime-fighter, he is symbolic of the pursuit of justice, and of the struggle and triumph of the individual.

As a President, the Batman would be a unilateralist disaster, a tyrant unconstrained by the rule of law.

We don't want to live in a country where Batman rules.

Ted van Tol   August 7th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

I think the Batmansuite fits better on Barack.
Imagine John Mccain in it even Cindy would run away!

Aaron   August 7th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

this is what exactly is wrong with America. we don't care about monetary or foreign policy platforms, but we DO care about what their thoughts are about batman??!! Disgusting.

AL in West Palm Beach, FL   August 7th, 2008 12:55 pm ET

Do you really believe that McCain went to the movies? I mean having all those youngsters around with their gadgets can be a little intimidating. I believe Cindy called the theater and have them bring the reels over, so that she and Mc can in their huge projection room.

TALK ABOUT OUT OF TOUCH….HUH

Vincent   August 7th, 2008 12:54 pm ET

Being a Veteran, I would not spend one minute of my time listening to Songbird McCain. His despicable treatment of his first wife and the deplorable way he spoke to the family’s of our POW/MIA (calling them whiners, vultures and the lunatic fringe) is not, in this Veterans view, anyone that I would cross the street, let alone, vote for office of the President as he has no respect for anyone. His voting record on veterans affairs is sorely lacking and he has had 25+ years in Washington to do something, 6 1/2 years both houses Republican run to accomplish something and what has he done? Nothing.

For the person who stated that he spent 5 years as a POW, let me tell you this, McCain was shot down on Oct 26, 1967 and by Nov. 9, 1967 he was giving interviews to foreign correspondents, providing information on his prior command, casualties and tactice, in direct violation of the Code of Conduct. Which, is considered collaborating with the enemy.

He has repeatedly stated that he was given no special treatment while in the Hanoi Hilton. Yet when he was interviewed by the North Vietnamese he is shown at a hosptal reserved for Vietnamese military and was taken care of by Soviet Surgeons. He was drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes while being interviewed. This is a far cry from the way the rest of the POWs were treated.

I say NO to Super Hero, Songbird McCain. (I would suggest that you google Songbird McCain to see how he sang to the North Vietnamese)

Senator John McCain is dead wrong on the economy and dead wrong on energy. He is a Old Man who time has come to retire. He believe in lying and just simply put being stupid..

Clinton/McCain   August 7th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Obama is no superhero. He's more like a villan.

Ken   August 7th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

Isn't there SOMETHING more important to report on than bipartisan support for a movie???

Army Vet in Charlotte   August 7th, 2008 12:52 pm ET

A ticker story about a frivolous news article in a worthless publication…

I guess they have to fill the blog up somehow.

Obama,
Please Please Please DON"T pick Hillary for your VP !

18 Million people voted for you and NOT for Hillary. We don't want her anywhere near the White House. She's a disgrace to this Country with her behavior.

I will Only vote for Obama if Hillary is Not on the ticket.

Wow, this is the first time I've ever agreed with McCain.
David Palmer IS the best TV president ever.

But, I'm a Superman fan, so, there's a draw there.

R.I.F.   August 7th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

The fact that both CNN and MSNBC put this on there blog spells "Slow Day" Get used to it. Obama's going on vacation and the media refuses to cover McShame and all his blunders so maybe the media should take a week off from politics and enjoy the Olympics. Wolf, Campbell, beat it!!!

Todd in Texas   August 7th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

Like we care, but I think Obama would be a better superhero because he is more fictional.

"The will learn English" WHEN?

"Inflating your tires could save as much oil as we could drill." Really?

He stole, "Yes, We Can" from Bob the Builder, a kids' cartoon.
"Can we build it, YES WE CAN!"

I have never called an empty suit. Although if you can't see through his smoke, maybe you are the empty suit.

Independent-Latina-for-OBAMA   August 7th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

OH BROTHER CNN, IS THIS NEWS! Not all of us have sunk to be level of tabloid news. Some of us, are actually thinking people who want a REAL debate about issues: economy, energy, healthcare, Iraq…..etc.

Please save this tabloid news for the tabloids.

Barack obama is the Dark Knight always fighting off the Clintons,MSM,McCain and the RNC. He is America's superhero. McClown is the joker.

Independent NYC   August 7th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

One big difference –
McCain wants to Batman for the oil companies; and

Obama wants to be Batman for the people.

Bulldog   August 7th, 2008 12:45 pm ET

The "Hillary" supporters are in fact Republicans being once again put up by Rush Limbaugh, the fraud of frauds. Don't fall for their tricks. Republicans successfully were able to vote for Hillary in many primaries to cause this ruckous and the media is falling for it. These people are not Democrats. They are Republicans putting on yet another show. They are being paid and transported by the GOP to pretend be PUMAs. Don't fall for their lies.

Flip Flopper   August 7th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

Used to be for Hillary… Now for McCain
