Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty has been mentioned as a potential VP pick for Sen. John McCain.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty – mentioned as a top contender to be John McCain’s running mate – said Thursday that the Republican Party needs to change its image and outreach geared toward young voters.

“I don't think we're doing a very good job reaching out and attracting the support of young people right now and that is part because we need to freshen up the party a little bit,” Pawlenty told CNN Headline News’ Glenn Beck. “Doesn't mean we dilute our values or change our values. We just have to do a better job of making sure we translate that them into the modern generation.”

Watch: Pawlenty on GOP, guns, bailouts

Veepstakes speculation has recently surrounded Pawlenty, a governor from a state in play this year. Political analysts say the Minnesota governor – who possesses a Washington-free resume - could take some of the same-old/same-old feel off the Republican ticket, counterbalancing McCain's age and decades in Congress with a light touch.

Watch the full interview on Glenn Beck tonight at 7 p.m. ET on Headline News.

Pawlenty also touched on a hot-button issue: Gun rights.

“[I’m a] strong supporter of the second amendment and I have been supported in all my elections by the NRA,” he said. “I'm the only governor in the USA to sign the concealed carry legislation twice. Once after the court threw it out and once before.”

When asked if car companies such as GM, Ford and Chrysler – who have fallen on hard times with a sagging economy – need a bail out, Pawlenty said the government “can be in the business of bailing out every large company that's in trouble.”

“We'd be bailing out the airlines we'd be bailing out lots of other companies, I think the answer is to have those companies … be competitive and compete in a world marketplace.”

The Minnesota governor also praised McCain’s ideas on tax credits for people who purchase next generation vehicles, which he said includes low emissions, fuel efficiency and next generation cellulite battery technology for their cars.

Oh yeah since Gun Control and the progression of Car Companies really appeal to the young voters....uh not really Pawlenty...however I think your parties' issues are a big negative for young voters, refusing to change those may get you no where with the new age, and I praise you for actually wanting to change your parties' politics as usual stance.

Lisa   August 7th, 2008 10:05 pm ET

Pawlenty's is only partly right - Republicans DO need to change their values and not be so beholden to the anti-tax and religious fringe if they want to"freshen up" the party and atttract younger, more progressive, more tolerant voters.

Henry Miller, Cary, NC   August 7th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

“I don't think we're doing a very good job reaching out and attracting the support of young people right now..."

I don't think you're doing a very good job of reaching out to, and keeping the support of, decidedly former Republicans like me who vividly remember Barry Goldwater.

Get rid of the bible-thumping bigotry and the arrogant, paranoiac, jingoistic, America uber alles foreign policy. Return to a decent respect for the Constitution and the freedoms of American citizens. Do all that and I might consider becoming a Republican again.

An Independent   August 7th, 2008 10:03 pm ET

"Doesn't mean we dilute our values or change our values."

Hmmm...I'd say it's the values that most need to be changed.

What I see as the values of the current Republican Party are things like:

- "Every human life is valuable" – but only until birth. Then, if the child's not in a wealthy family, who cares about them?

- "We need to cut taxes" – but still make sure all our pet projects get funded. Of course, the government can't afford that, but we'll just stick future generations with the bill. We'll be dead by then, so why should we care?

- "The science on global warming is inconclusive" and "We need to drill for more oil" – because we don't want to sacrifice anything now, especially if it cuts profits for our donors in the energy industry. By the time the full effects of global warming kick in, we'll be dead. Yeah, future generations will suffer, but we only care about ourselves right now, not other people or the future.

Stuff like that is why the Republicans are losing support. Changing the way you say the same selfish short-sighted things isn't really going to help.

Susan   August 7th, 2008 9:47 pm ET

You need more the fresh for the Republicans, you would need an entire makeover. Oh, wait, The Republicans would stillstink! Obama 08!!!

I hope McCain does pick Pawlenty. He will lose the entire Great Lakes and Upper Midwest, then. Pawlenty IS NOT loved in MN. And all the neighboring states are glad he's not ours.

Jo Ann   August 7th, 2008 9:17 pm ET

What is amazing to me is if Obama had suggested that Michelle be in
cowchip contest= the media especially Fox would be playing that day and night including you CNN but since it was McCain that made the statement you hear it one day and it's not news. When will the media ever be fair in their reporting?

Joey, MN   August 7th, 2008 9:14 pm ET

Pawly: its not that young people aren't hearing your message properly: they're hearing TOO WELL!!! Anyone paying attention knows you're full of it.

henry   August 7th, 2008 9:12 pm ET

Why dont John McCain hold press conferences anymore, the Republican are afraid he might loose his cool. Ha–Ha–Ha.

David Newport, OR   August 7th, 2008 9:10 pm ET

we are more educated...we can look at the facts and make our own decisions. That means the Republicans will have to 'uneducate' us.

Drew from Green Bay, WI   August 7th, 2008 9:09 pm ET

Gov. Pawlenty is absolutly right. They do need to target young voters better, because right now the Democrats are winning a large majority of the younger generation. On a side note, I wonder if the reason for Bush's adminstration to suddenly be in sync with Sen. Obama is because they are trying to make Sen. Obama look more like Pres. Bush and Sen. McCain to look less like Pres. Bush. Oh well, I don't think the Republicans have an honest bone in them and that's why I'm for Sen. Obama.

The Repugs are so out of touch with the needs of the public. This is the worst I have seen since I have been voting for over three decades. The rich are richer, the rest of us trying to make a living every day are getting poorer over these past eight years. As long as the Repugs have big business in their back pocket, the trend will continue. Time for new blood. Obama 08/12

I'm a Christian and voted Republican all my life due to Christian values. But these Republican media moguls are really damaging our country with hatred, and I can't support it as a Christian.

Sorry, REPUBS, you're going to lose the Evangelical vote this year!!! That was the swing vote that got Bush elected the last 2 terms.

Cling to Your Gun   August 7th, 2008 8:54 pm ET

The right-wing conservatives like Rush, Glenn Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly, are really stirring the pot. Instead of spewing hatred (and pretending it's because they don't like Obama's policies), they should be working overtime to heal the divisions in our country. What's going to happen when Obama DOES become president and they've created an internal war zone in the U.S.A. for their children and grandchildren? Then no one will be safe!!! Don't they see what they're doing??? Can't they STOP???

If your candidate is so great, talk about him, and stop dissing Obama!

Nathan from Texas   August 7th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

Pawlenty said the government “can be in the business of bailing out every large company that's in trouble.”

is that a misquote? cause it seems from context that he meant to say "can't"

Alex   August 7th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

As a young Republican myself, the party needs to branch away from the social-conservative issues which make it so abrasive and focus on what Barry Goldwater wanted, minimal government in private life, free markets, and strong national defense. Gay marriage, gays in the military, abortion, the death penalty, etc all contradict the core of the Republican Party, Government should not be telling people what to with their own personal lives. If young people realize you can be socially liberal and economically conservative then there would be a huge increase in young participation.

steve-MN   August 7th, 2008 8:53 pm ET

He is not different. Once a rethug always a rethug. He agrees with Bush in almost everything. So Pawlenty/ McSame=Bush third Term. We are not fooled here in the land of 10000 lakes

Bruce A., South Carolina   August 7th, 2008 8:51 pm ET

Many good options for VP. Senator McCain should consider Sen Joe Biden. I remember telling my wife during the early days that JB is a Dem that a Dem or Rep can vote for. His ideas really make sense and could mesh well with Sen McCain with some hard sitdowns.

Pam   August 7th, 2008 8:45 pm ET

Reach out to younger voters with Grandpa Munster as your candidate?? Not gonna happen!

mary   August 7th, 2008 8:44 pm ET

Headline from Minneapolis paper. Seriously.

How about if you start by giving your republications geography books, then teach them how to use computers and the internet and exercise sending and reading email via devices like blackberry and iphones, then get them off offering their wives for topless contests at bikers rallies and for a one step closer to being a modern person, get off alcohol. I think thats a good start.

Peter   August 7th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

Pawlenty must really want to be VP if he says this...

Cynthia   August 7th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

They can work on that for the next eight years and by that time the Democrats will have gotten this country back on track

Anonymous   August 7th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

you're not reaching voters because the mccain camp is a pathetic joke.

M in MN   August 7th, 2008 8:31 pm ET

Given the "state of the state" in MN since Pawlenty took office: downturn in economy, loss of jobs, extreme increase in property taxes, and need we mention the fact that Pawlenty VETOED increased spending on transportation in a state where a major freeway COLLAPSED, I don't think Pawlenty would be much help to McCain. (Not that we wouldn't be happy to get rid of him...)

Oh well, doesn't matter anyway, because McCain/Whoever will be out of jobs in November, anyway.

Biased Journalism?   August 7th, 2008 8:27 pm ET

Pawlenty said that the government canNOT be in the business of bailing out every large company that's in trouble. Come on CNN. Proof read your articles.

Gogo   August 7th, 2008 8:26 pm ET

Don't you think there is a typo in this article ['can' should be 'can't"]?

When asked if car companies such as GM, Ford and Chrysler – who have fallen on hard times with a sagging economy – need a bail out, Pawlenty said the government “can be in the business of bailing out every large company that's in trouble.”

Bruce W. Krafft   August 7th, 2008 8:22 pm ET

The only problem with Pawlenty is that he ticked off 56,000+ permit-holders in his state when he failed to keep a promise he made in November of 2006. He said that he would inform the Department of Public Safety to actaully start following the MN Citizens Personal Protection Act (the law so nice he signed it twice). We are still waiting, and a whole bunch of us have been busy telling GOP fund raisers that the GOP will not get one thin dime until the Governor keeps his promise.

Yinka   August 7th, 2008 8:18 pm ET

No amount of freshening-up would help a candidate (Senator McCain)who is so out of touch with the American people.
He
(1) He makes fun of the American people concerning the value in inflating tires.
(2) His campaign wishes another 9/11 attack for their political gain
(3) He thinks the economy is great as it is
(4) He wants the troop to stay in Iraq for another 100years or more
(5) His advisor believes that America is a nation of whinners
(6) His campaign is packed with lobbyist
(7) He wants to give billions of $ of tax break to the oil industry
(8) He has no knowledge of the world
(9) He would rather 'bomb, bomb, bomb Iran' and 'wipe out Iran with cigarette'
(10) All he is good at is mocking Obama and his plan, but he has no idea of his own
(11) He has flip-flopped million times: on troop withdrawal, on talking with Iran , on value of proper tire-pressure etc

Senator McCain would be the worst thing to have happened to America, if he were to be elected as President.

John McCain did a good job of looking for a younger vote by his attack ads which featured Paris Hilton. Now she has young America which we know that she owns calling McCain the old white hair guy. For the republicans I think getting the young vote well lets just say "that ship has already sailed".

Wisconsin   August 7th, 2008 8:01 pm ET

Wisconsin   August 7th, 2008 8:00 pm ET

We need to reach out to the youth of America, so here is the oldest white guy we could possibly find!

I relate to Obama and Edwards both talking about making it easer to pay for collage.

I relate to stopping the war.

To ending the Bush tax cuts while I have to pay a higher 5 of taxes then most CEO's

I relate to a campaign that can do more then lie about the person they are running against.

In short there is no reason in the world for me to McShame no matter how you try to spin him.

shaik   August 7th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

Listen to what Paris H said....that's indicative of what young people think of your candidate and the party. Wrinkled old man/party!
In contrast, 220,000 young people mostly showed up for Mr. O in Berlin, and they are not even voters!!

Steve   August 7th, 2008 7:58 pm ET

It's a shame Pawlenty isn't running for president. His gun control policies aside, he has some good ideas for this country and comes off much better than McCain. Maybe he can go for it in 2012 when all the "yes we can" is long since for gotten and people realize Obama "can't"....

Seattle Aaron   August 7th, 2008 7:57 pm ET

HA Good Luck GOP!? We the younger, modern generation support gay marriage, like the environment, are anti-war, more secular than religiously affiliated, demand responsibility in gov't, prefer alternative energy research and investment, and don't really care if one big corporation goes down the tubes because of their old worn out beliefs in business or questionable business practices, nor do we make grandios, megalomaniacal claims such "moral majority."
hmmmm......
Query: Who would Jesus Bomb? Who would Jesus kill? What people's rights would Jesus impinge? After all those questions, I wonder who Jesus would pick to be more moral?
GOP, it's not your message that needs changing, it's your entire perspective of the world.

Gary   August 7th, 2008 7:55 pm ET

Steve   August 7th, 2008 7:53 pm ET

Translation is not the problem. The younger voters are educated and much more politically savvy than their elders in a lot of ways (I'm saying this as a 56 year old man). Younger voters clearly understand the Republican message. No translation necessary. Younger voters are bombarded on a daily basis with erroneous and distorted information from all sides. They have excellent BS detectors as a result. They smell the very, very strong odor of BS in the Republican message. Freshen it up a bit, and all you've got is fresh BS. Still unsavory.....

Pawlenty may have a young, "fresh" face himself, but after the comment about his wife liking fishing and soccer but he "wished she liked having sex with him" (look to earlier article here today on CNN), I find him to be another "hilarious" republican with "family" values. What if his wife joked about wishing he could "get it up"? Not so funny after all, especially considering the age of the man he is supporting.....

This is time for the Republicans to purge and renew themselves and get back to decency. It will take years. Their time is NOT now.

Pawlenty, why don't you just support Barack. You know you want to. Leave the rethugs alone. They won't change. Barack has stated no more lobbyists money going to the DNC. He's remaking the party into the people's party. The repubs are for the corporations.

Young people by and large don't have the sense to vote Republican, because they don't know enough about the world, they haven't had enough experiences/time earning an full-time income, and they are very gullable. When they eventually go to school, and get their careers going/established, and the money starts coming in, that is when they notice that the Democratic tax policies discourage hard work, and steal your money to pay for bad policies; that's when they consider the Republican Party. Admit it young people, you don't really have enough experience or money, that's why you're voting for the Democrat-Barack Obama!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

R.S.-St. Paul   August 7th, 2008 7:40 pm ET

The GOP is going to get CRUSHED this November... and most of them don't even see it coming. Rupert Murdoch, in all his glorious wisdom, appears to be the only Conservative aware of their impending dismal defeat. Get a clue, Repugs... you have NOTHING in common with today's youth or even the average US citizen, for that matter.

That's how minority parties tend to be made up.

If you truly want to make inroads into more folks considering Republican themes, the morons with lack of vision must be purged in a very public fashion, and a "from the heart" invititation to those who want to join.

The Republican party should stick to what they know best: taking bribes from the oil companies, running oil services companies like Haliburton, and keeping America addicted to oil while simultaneous running up the price of oil by fighting endless wars with oil rich nations and telling America the solution to our crisis is drill drill drill when we have 2% of the world's oil and we use 25% of the world's oil which of course will only make the oil companies have another umpteenth record profitable quarter for a public company.

Someone in the media said John McCain doesn't care how old he is, he just wants to be president. I agree because logically speaking why would McCain at age 71 even think he can lead this country into the 21st century which is a world of technology. The only thing McCain will be capable of doing is starting another war. McCain is scary and dangerous for our country.

Maybe when schools don't hire professors or teachers that only spew the liberal leftist agenda set forth by hack teachers unions, we might get young people to hear a differing view BEFORE they enter the REAL world.

I agree with Winston Churchill who put life wonderfully: "He who is not a liberal in their 20's has no heart, he who still is one in their 40's, has no brains".

This is about indoctrinating our young in schools and NOTHING ELSE.

The truth hurts you are a bit off, Democrats do fine with young people until they get their first job and have to pay EXTRA taxes for social programs for people that DON'T WORK or EVEN BETTER, WHEN they LOSE a job due to some affirmative action program that liberals covet.

Churchill was so right.

The tax cut for the wealthy funded China's growth to American workers detriment. Rather than invest it here they invested in China to build the plants that took away American jobs. Now those same foreign workers who are buying cars are driving up the price of gasoline.

The tax break was a double wammy for American workers. Not only was the capital used to outsource their jobs but now the oil demands by the low wage employees who tooks those jobs is pushing up fuel prices and creating more misery and unemployment.

The wealthy tax break is a job eating ebola virus to the American economy. John McCain thinks this is wonderful.

And why isn't Obama being prosecuted for receiving bribes just like the senator from Alaska? Oh that's right, Obama would play the race card.

Sherry, I would have to disagree. Being a recent college grad, the idea of starting my own company, working hard and making as much money as I want is what I relate to. I don't relate to big government taxing me to death, charging me for medicare that I'll never be a recipient of, social security that I will NEVER get back! I don;t relate to giving anyone breaks without their personal excerted effort.

Luckily when I was young the Republicans never appealed to me because they always seemed filled with greedy "I only care about myself people" I liked your description though except for the old guys who end up working for oil companies making 45 million or more a year salary-then they stay Republicans because they want to hold on to all their money and care even less about others!!
Who the H needs to make 45 million a year I ask? I wouldn't know what to do with one million and I think that is more than enough for most people. It is sick....

Perhaps if Sen. McCain knew how to turn on a computer , use the internet and e-mail, all tools of the modern age you might catch up to the technological advances of Sen. Obama.

Perhaps if Sen. McCain knew how to turn on a computer , use the internet and e-mail, all tools of the modern age you might catch up to the technological advances of Sen. Obama.

But as Paris Hilton said: "John Mcain is the oldest celebrity in the world, like super-old, old enough to remember when dancing was a sin and beer was served in a bucket," and she asks, "but is he ready to lead?"

SwingVoter   August 7th, 2008 7:01 pm ET

Perhaps McCain can pick Paris Hilton as his running mate. That will freshen the party...

Democrats "better equipped" to solve health care problems – Sen. Dave Durenberger
Says Republicans are "dead wrong" about education funding.

Click here to download or listen to show
Former U.S. Senator Dave Durenberger knows health care. He's written two books on the subject and was appointed by Governor Tim Pawlenty to head the Minnesota Citizens Forum on health care.

Durenberger, a life-long Republican, says his own party has "stepped way over the line by saying only private insurnce companies can deliver good health care."

Although he says he will never be a Democrat, Durenberger says Democrats are "better equipped to carry the day" when it comes to health care. Durenberger says Republicans are right that people make better choices than government does. But he says Republican/insurance company health care solutions are the worst choice since "insurance companies don't make better choices than either government or families".

Don't worry about the GOP, Gov. Pawlenty.

The leaders of the Democratic Party have failed us.

And the leaders of protest groups – Darragh Murphy of PUMA PAC, in particular – are now failing those of us who watched the leaders of the Democratic Party fail us before. It's a world gone mad...

Compared to us Democrats, you have it just fine.

I do not know much about Pawlenty, but I would like to hear more from him.
I read that he said, "The GOP has to be the party of SAM'S CLUB not just the country club." Also, this article said that his brothers and sisters have "blue collar jobs" . He has accomplished a lot of bipartisian legislation in MN.
He sounds like he identifies with ordinary people and their problems. He should get on the news more.

Wow, that's a pooly edited piece. I'm pretty sure he said the government "can not" be in the business of bailouts. And I don't believe we've come up with car batteries that run on cellulite.

victorhill   August 7th, 2008 6:48 pm ET

In a McCain campaign "Economic Communications Plan" that was obtained by the Huffington Post, an aide to the Senator lays out several themes, tactics and objectives to shore up the Arizona Republican's standing on the economy and paint Barack Obama as a "job killing machine."

"Our polling tells us that Americans are still not tuned into what the candidates might do to fix the economy," reads the memo. "We have an opportunity to fill in that gap."

The strategy, which was authored by Taylor Griffin - a veteran of the Bush White House and Treasury Department who serves McCain as a senior adviser - seems built around traditional themes. The McCain campaign will paint Obama as being "aligned with trial lawyers" and "unions (card check, trade, education reform)," and push the frame that he "raises taxes" and "will kill jobs."

In contrast, McCain will be positioned as a bold leader on economic matters, someone who has a "record of taking on corporate interests" and will "fight speculation driving up prices of oil and food" as well as "the lawsuit culture." per Hunt. Press.

Good luck with that, RNC - this ain't the "go-go 80's" of Wall St. tycoons, "greed is good" Gordon Gekko or "...let's make lots of money" Pet Shop Boys nonsense. People are actually becoming, dare say, sensible?

TheTruthHurts   August 7th, 2008 6:44 pm ET

I think Republicans do fine with young people until they get their first job. Then they begin to realize how they're getting screwed. Then in their 50s if they've got any money, they go Republican again becuase they hate taxes. About retirement time they change back to Dems because they want Social Security and Medicare to be there for them.

See, we all flip-flop.

Catty   August 7th, 2008 6:36 pm ET

He's right. The republican party seems alittle stale...no rock star running for president on our side of the ballot. But, young voters aren't stupid. We know the issues and our positions and we vote accordingly.

Capt. Smash, Salt Lake City, Utah   August 7th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

John   August 7th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Tim...why don't you just vote for Obama already? He represents the change you want to see in the Republican Party. Inclusion has not / will not be the focus of the Republican party because of their polarizing of America, they need citizens broken into groups...white, black, abortion, illegal immigrants, gun owners. They need these wedge issues to divide America...Tim, you're just in the wrong party.

Peter (CA)   August 7th, 2008 6:31 pm ET

Freshen up?
That's like saying New Orleans could have used a little fresh paint.

Here is a party that touts "family values" yet continually uses hate and fear to push forward their agenda. My own congressman is an incredible crook who will probably win again because people in my district vote for their party.

If the Republicans want to be real, they will make themselves over from top to bottom. But, right now, the money is just too good.

Good luck with that one. Until you reform our School System that brainwashes our children and turns them against American principles
as they tried to do with my two boys, now young men, you will not see
a resurgence in the Republican Party. They are fed socialist propaganda from kindergarden through high school. The Greens are getting them very young and converting them to tree huggers, and the
evolutionists also get their views accros in our textbooks. It takes
a very strong mind and parents that are being vigilant to overcome the school system. Several times during the past 12 years, I had confrontations with teachers and administrators that were more concerned with my boys fitting in and being liked than they were with their education. The next one is the media that dishonors our elected officials, degrades public servants and panders to the left wing elements in our society.

No to Dirty Republicans and their Criminal Agenda!

Well if that's true then don't put a 71 year old man at the forefront of your party. It sounds like he thinks he should be the nominee instead of McCain. He's definitely pushing for the VP spot.

Alex_58   August 7th, 2008 6:06 pm ET

Pawlentry is correct – but it may be difficult to recruit from the younger generation. The GOP is often seen as the party of exclusion, and the new generation has been taught to accept any and all behaviors & viewpoints (with the exception of conservative Christianity).

It will be interesting to see if he can translate his vision into action.
