Edwards endorsed Obama in May.
Edwards endorsed Obama in May.

(CNN) – Former U.S. senator and Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards admitted to an extramarital affair in an interview with ABC News, the network reported Friday. He denied being the father of the woman's child, as had been alleged in tabloid reports.

Watch: Edwards met Hunter at a bar

Asked by a reporter late last month whether he had provided any financial support to Rielle Hunter, or to Andrew Young - the former Edwards aide who claimed paternity of the child - Edwards replied that "I have no idea what you are asking about, I have responded to consistently to these tabloid allegations by saying I don't respond to these lies." He also said again that he had not lied during his presidential campaign when he denied an affair with Hunter.

Election Center: The John Edwards File

Speaking to the network for a story to be aired Friday night, Edwards acknowledged the affair with 42-year-old Rielle Hunter, which began after she was hired to make documentary videos for his campaign, ABC said.

He said he has not taken a paternity test, but that the timing of the affair rules out the possibility that he could be her baby girl's father.

Well, good thing we didn't pick that guy. Phew!

Concerned Citizen of America 08   August 8th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Sen Edwards was my first pick for Dem Presidential nominee. I'm not only heartbroken for Elizabeth, but very disappointed in John.

Tom Williams   August 8th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Better check out Obama. Look, his wife isn't even with him anymore - she went back to Chicago. What do you think that means??? She knows something about her husband that the media has not dared put out there yet. I can guess what it is; that man thinks of himself as Godly and Rock-star stuff. Why do you think that is??? (Not to me, he isn't) Major media, don't wait for National Enquirer to scoop on this one.

StopOBAMAEXPRESS   August 8th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Edwards is the lowest person on earth. His wife fighting cancer and he is out having an affair. I am sure Obama has dirty secrets too!

Joe   August 8th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Hey Luke Brown, this is not about McCain. This is about a sleazeball guy who thought he would not get caught or that people would feel bad for him because of his wife's illness. This should not be about politics and to bring in McCain is just immature.

Spencer, Newport News, VA   August 8th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I respect the fact that Mr. Edwards is being forthcoming with the public, but I don't think that's any of my business and it shouldn't be none of America's business either.

Tim in California   August 8th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

We have a chap above...John from California....wonders what skeleton's Obama has in his closet. Who cares...but then again let's count McCain's known skeletons first:

He cheated on his first wife with his current wife. One wonders how many times he's done that?

He took bribes from Charles Keating.

He took bribes from Paxson Communications.

Dianne in NY   August 8th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

A big disappointment for sure, especially with his wife being
so sick. Now whats going to come out about Obama before
this is all over. At least with Hillary it was all out there, like it
or not.

disenfranchised   August 8th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

What's the big deal? We're talking about a polititian here. They all have something in the closet. It's just that noone knows about them yet.

N.S   August 8th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I just heard the sound of a political career being shot behind a shed.

Dorothy   August 8th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

Oh NO!!!!!!!!!!!! I truly believed that John Edwards might be one of the few decent men/husbands in the world (as I think Barack Obama is), and am truly sad and disheartened about this. I truly believed that he loved and respected his wife so much that he was truly incapable of betraying her. Oh my God...I guess nothing is sacred. There are words that I could resort to to describe the kind of person who would betray a woman as decent, loyal, couragious and smart as Elizabeth Edwards is...but I will let you guys fill in the blanks. Elizabeth honey, just get the H away from that slimeball. Printable enough?

So men really ARE pigs...but then that would be insulting the pig in Mr. Edwards case.

Tom   August 8th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Oops. Wardrobe malfunction (zipper), I would guess.

mark   August 8th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

"I really viewed John Edwards as one of the few really upstanding men of our time."???

a man who "channeled" the voice of a dead child in court to sucker a jury into a ridiculous verdict is one of the most upstanding men of our time? really???? these are dark times indeed

David   August 8th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Why does it take FoxNews to break this story after the National Enquirer and CNN to take so long to finally look into it after John Edwards finally admits to it. I think CNN needs to focus on being a little more objective than filling up the news with unwanted and useless Obama news articles.

Cheri   August 8th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Infidelity is simply a standard of measure for the soul.

There are plenty of private and public examples of the selfish, petulant power hungry feeding their egos at the expense of spouses, families, friends, companies, supporters, etc

He has the company of Clinton, Gingrich, Spitzer, Greevy and multitudes of others

cb   August 8th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

Not surprising. These stories have become the norm rather than the exception. What I find most repugnant is this guy's amazing hubris – did he really think he could run for public office and keep this story buried? What stupidity! He can now join the prestigious ranks of lying cheating politico's like Newt Gingrich who did the same thing to his wife who was suffering from cancer. How very sad for his family – they are the ultimate victims here.

No,no, I don't buy that. Yeah, there are people who cheat on their wives but there are as many people who have a wonderful and loving family. Infidelity is a choice not an option...

It is surprising that the GOP may have all the crazynness involve, but even the Dems themselves are following their footsteps...

I feel bad for him, I do. Is a big mistake that he said it publicly...

Anita   August 8th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

I dont like what he did but nobody knows the whole story or circumstances. Rather have an indiscretion than someone running the country that has half a brain and continues to damage our economy. I'd take Edwards with this story than what's happened to the US over the last 6+ years

Stan   August 8th, 2008 3:24 pm ET

John in CA - Why would a John Edward affair make you wonder about skeletons in BARACK's closet? That doesn't make sense. It's just as likely there are skeletons in John McCains closet. To Joe - why do you say it boosts his Democratic resume? What about all the Republican sex scandals of late; Larry Craig, Mike Foley, etc.?

I don't think Edwards was destined for V.P. anyway.

Patrick Howard   August 8th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

Edwards has just confirmed what most of America already thought. He is just another empty suit with a great haircut. Always thought he would do well as a used car salesman, however, given his pitiful sense of ethics he should just continue his legal career.

I am very disappointed in Edwards even so I know things like that happen all around us.
With his wife Elizabeth suffereing with cancer it would have been nice if Edwards use some self control.

Maxine in Tennessee   August 8th, 2008 3:22 pm ET

This is a personal matter between him and his wife. No one can know the stress they've been through–certain cancer treatments prohibit conjugal relations. However, I wonder about the effect of this on public confusion with the OTHER Edwards who has been suggested for Democratic veep. Now confused voters will think HE had the affair.

Brooke in PA   August 8th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

I always had a bad feeling about Edwards, like something about him always rubbed me the wrong way. I found out about this three weeks ago but now I'm glad it's coming out.

Funny, it's nearly 10 years to the day (August 17th) when another well known Democratic party member admitted to lying about an affair..hmmm.

My thoughts are with Elizabeth and the kids.

Jason in Juneau   August 8th, 2008 3:21 pm ET

Wow, I really didn't see that coming at all. It's too bad but it also is common place in our society to cheat, it's everywhere you look. It's not an excuse, and I hope they are able to repair their marriage. I have this feeling though they've dealt with the issue between them before it went public, Elizabeth had to have had some idea about it.

I won't throw any stones because I refuse to judge someone based on what they do in the bedroom. Who knows what John Edward's relationship with his wife is like behind closed doors. This is not news, and none of our business.

White Dude for Obama!   August 8th, 2008 3:19 pm ET

Edwards isn't running for President, so this doesn't hurt Obama. In fact, I bet most people don't even care. If it is his child, Edwards is a MILLIONAIRE, so the kid will be well off.

Edwards infedelity has nothing to do with anything other than problems in his relationship with his wife. It probably started when she got sick and couldn't respond to his needs physically.

I wouldn't agree with what he did, but as a man, I understand. As a Christian who supports Obama, you gotta stayed Prayed up to make sure you aren't weak in these situations.

Edwards, make your peace with your wife. I hope u become a better man.

Everyone is now seeing John Edwards for what we in North Carolina already knew – a low life that will say and do anything to satisfy that monstrous ego of his.

I knew from day one he did it and not surprised. Shortly after the Enquirer story broke, Elizabeth totally disappeared off of the campaign trail. Nothing more was seen or heard from her once the story came out. We didn't see here again until NO when John dropped out and she just stood in the back.

Going to be interesting to see how this pans out. Hopefully Elizabeth finds as "determined" a lawyer as Edwards was and takes him for everything. Of course, that means that John will then have to go back chasing ambulances again and wreck our health care again here in NC.

Joe Kiloz   August 8th, 2008 3:18 pm ET

Wow, he says he's not the father because of the timing ? In other words, he was intimate with this woman at other times but not when she got pregnant. Take the paternity test John and come to the court of public opinion with the results.

As for Andrew Young, if he is the father and accepts it, step up to the birth certificate and start paying child support. Another dynamic duo who are critics of all kinds of crooks out there.

Must have been that $300.00 haircut ? And this guy has the audacity to claim moral leadership within the Democratic party and criticized Bill Clinton for his dangling lavolier ?

I'm not the least bit suprised by his behavior, and who cares if he was lying about it or not. Would it made him a better man if he admitted to it when he was running or what? Obviously, he lied to his wife, and what worse a behavior than that. Thank goodness people didn't vote for him.

Well, I wonder if Obama still wants the support of a man like this?

BigBear   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

I Love America. Not very much, I would say, when your definition of a good family man is someone who subjects their wife and kids to the diatribes of Reverend Wright, and the relationship of a convicted felon.

hooooey   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Thanks National Enquirer for actually having breaking journalism. I am sorry Mrs. Edwards unless you knew about it which may not suprise me. Now O'Reilly will have to report on it that dirty big poppa bear

Michael   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Sleeze, Power and Politics. Forever linked!

Just to say   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Well... I suppose I'll have to throw my full support behind La Clinton for VP now. I was counting on this guy... what a shame!

kathryn   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

NOW we know why he did'nt run with Obama. What a jerk! And his poor sweet, cancer-stricken wife probably knew what a creep he was all along. What a rat. Kathryn

carlo   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Nobody's perfect! Goodness people. I didn't think it was funny when Elliot Spitzer got caught and its not funny now.

Why don't you just pray for people when these things happen and not throw stones?

I will admit though, he shouldn't have run for President with this looming over his head. That part is totally inconsiderate. However, I'm not his judge, and none of you are, either.

Cynthia   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Feel sorry for his wife but the reality of it he is no different from the rest of the men out there who cheat, be they Democrat or Republican.

stuart_zechman   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

This is all part of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy against Democrats.

Melissa   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Was this going on while he was making campaign ads preaching about his morals? If you come back to NC, you've got some balls.

Dominique   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Wrong answer! What was he thinking? He should have been able to say that he did not father the child because he had never slept with her mother. The fact that he cannot say that reveals so much about his character.

JDC // Ohio   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

The PERFECT Dem choice for VP!

Dems 20081968 Convention Riot   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Edwards for President. Bill Clinton for VP. Bush for Defense Secretary. Powell for Sec. of State. This will be the best adminstration ever. Oh wait....it is already the U.S. Government

Susan from Scotts Valley, CA   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

Interestingly enough the National Enquirer has some of the best investigative reporters in the print business. I know it may not seem like it when we see some of the headlines they have but they do.

It's a sad story but infidelity happens all the time and causes grief in families every day. It's just when you're living in the national spotlight it seems amazingly stupid to do something like this – like you're not going to get caught. And on top of that to do this when his wife is so sick, makes it even worse. I think he can kiss off Attorney General as well.

Houston, TX   August 8th, 2008 3:17 pm ET

George   August 8th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Yep, if my wife were dying of cancer I'd be cheating on her too. NOT.

John Edwards....you are a scumbag.

Tim K.   August 8th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

With his wife suffering and fighting a courageous battle of Breast Cancer, John Edwards takes it upon himself to have an affair and possibly father a child. Too chicken to take a paternity test. Edwards now belongs in the company of have an affair while you wife lays sick Newt Gingrich style. He along with Gingrich, total scum, total waste of human flesh.

Steve   August 8th, 2008 3:16 pm ET

Poor Elizabeth, dying of cancer, probably divorce now

Good that you were not the Democratic nominee! Anyway, go and sin no more! Same to all those of the same ilk in the political arena/ public limelight who to this very day are shooting their mouths off.

Greg, San Francisco, CA   August 8th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Very disappointed. Thought highly of him until now.

Zelda   August 8th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

I'm sorry to hear about this. I wish the Edwards family well. They've been through a lot.

Socialists for Obama   August 8th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Well, there he is, right on schedule... "Mr. Honorable." He's only coming out with this because someone must be getting ready to release photos of him doing the 3 AM walk of shame from the Beverly Hilton.

So, let's see... if he lied about something as mundane as playing the hokey pokey with the hired help, what else do you think he may have been lying about?

Do you think he may have ever been lying in one of the multimillion dollar legal shakedowns of medical professionals, you know, the scumbag ambulance chasing lawsuits where he single-handedly did his part to help RAISE the cost of healthcare and RAISE the cost of medical providers' insurance, all in the name of building a 35,000 square foot shrine to himself. Oh, yeah, look ladies and gentlemen, he's a man of the people. And liberals have the "audacity" to talk of hypocrisy across the aisle. Please pick the beam from your own eye first.

craig   August 8th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Why can't any democrats keep their pants zipped up? What a disgrace. He should not be considered for VP or for that fact he should resign. This is supposed to be a position for people with values and morals. Of course the former democratic president Billy boy was getting off in the oval office with his intern and the dems excused that also.

What a disgrace.

Luke Brown, Charleston SC   August 8th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

McCain should admit to the affairs he had while he was married to his first wife.

Joy Henley   August 8th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

Oh....how I have loved John Edwards. He seems to have the most devoted wife. Elizabeth has stood by him when she is so ill. She also worked hard throughout his campaign, despite her own needs.
She must be devastated, to put it mildly. This is sad..... I will be saying prayers for this family. These are really dear people to me.

Bonnie O., Raleigh, NC   August 8th, 2008 3:15 pm ET

J Smith   August 8th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

I wonder if this would have gotten more than 2 sentences if it were a republican former presidential candidate. And they say there is no media bias.

Dianne   August 8th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

Oh my, this is sooo disappointing. I really viewed John Edwards as one of the few really upstanding men of our time. The weakness of men is unbelievable, especially with so much at stake. He has lost all credibility in my eyes. Very sad.

Mike   August 8th, 2008 3:14 pm ET

What a wonderful August Surprise. Im sure he can speak with Bill Clinton at the DNC convention on the need to change the tone of politics in Washington. In a way, Im kind of underwhelmed that he didnt hold out until after the convention so he could swagger around with the 21 delegates that he won.

Im sure the baby issue will pan out later.

Melissa   August 8th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

Well, he won't be elected for any office in North Carolina. I didn't agree with his beliefs, but never thought he would cheat on his wife who has breast cancer.

AK   August 8th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

What affair? There was an affair? I didn't read about any affair on CNN, or NBC, or ABC, or CBS, or the New York Times. So what are they talking about?

Amazing that it took the National Enquirer to do the work of the MSM and these so-called "journalists".

Start digging in to Obama's past instead if applying his sunscreen and the darkness will be revealed.

Former presidential and potential vice presidential candidates affair (while his wifes cancer has returned) is verified, after months of denials, and relegated to the ticker? Come on.

Melissa Sandoval in Whittier, CA   August 8th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

I was wondering when CNN was going to report this. The LA Times had not reported anything on Edwards affair and most of the news outlets ignore this story. This story is another example of the public's disappointment with their politicians.

sms   August 8th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

You wouldn't think it if you looked at the guy...and his wife has cancer. Just goes to show that you really never can tell.

Matt Jennings   August 8th, 2008 3:13 pm ET

And it's our business why? This is between him, his family, and whoever or whatever he believes he'll meet on the other side. The traditional media is turning into a cheap, gossip rag.

james   August 8th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

yikes! I guess we now know why Obama didn't pick Edwards as his VP. I was hoping for it personally, but now I see what a distraction this would have been...(huge sigh of relief)

Jason   August 8th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Anyone surprised?

Not too surprising for a guy who pays $400 for a haircut.

Amen Ellen...

Richard B   August 8th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I am happy to see that you finally decided that this could be printed. Of course Edwards had to admit it publicly before you decided to put it on the website, so I am not sure why you felt it was important to filter the news on this issue.

Linda K.   August 8th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Poor Elizabeth. How can she stay with him?

Lying: bad.

Affair: worse.

Affair while wife WAS UNDERGOING CANCER TREATMENTS: Horrible.

Thanks, John Edwards.

KM   August 8th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Okay, so he admits that he's human. This happens everyday but since he is in the spotlight, we rake him through the coals. The only person that he needs to answer to is his wife.

Joe   August 8th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Who cares, he is not running for anything now~~

Aaron, Sterling VA   August 8th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

I can't believe pot is still the head story even though this has broke and Russia has invaded another country that's allied with the U.S.

Boo to CNN for pushing things that are actually important under the rug and giving attention to stories that don't really impact anything.

Rob Stumpf   August 8th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

Impossible!!!! Democrats NEVER lie.

This must be a Rovian trick to destroy him because Johnnie is our strongest VP candidate. That MUST be it. It's a conspiracy!

Angelina   August 8th, 2008 3:12 pm ET

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! Think of all the dimwits who wanted this guy to be PREZ. He can't even tell the truth about his own life! Democraps are dumb

I for one am not surprised. He didn't show much empathy for Elizabeth, when they were campaigning in the dead of winter. I felt so sorry for her. She is a strong women, who loved her man more than he loved her. God be with you Mrs. Edwards.

kisha   August 8th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

WOW! ...didn't see that one coming.

Generation X   August 8th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

This is news? This is a every-day occurence world over. As long as there are men and women willing to give and receive, this will continue. It would only be a problem if the woman was underaged. It takes two to entangle and no job has been lost by Edwards sleeping with this woman. Give it a good rest for good!

Patty   August 8th, 2008 3:10 pm ET

So sad.
