(CNN) — Fred Baron, the finance chairman for the John Edwards presidential campaign, said in a Friday statement that he paid to help the woman Edwards had an extramarital affair with, and the former aide who was the alleged father of her child, move out of the former North Carolina senator’s home state.

“I decided independently to help two friends and former colleagues rebuild their lives when harassment by supermarket tabloids made it impossible for them to move forward on their own,” he said of his efforts to aid Rielle Hunter and Andrew Young.

“I did this of my own volition without the instruction or suggestion of anyone, and made a conscious decision not to tell anyone, including John Edwards, that assistance was provided,” he added. “The assistance was offered and accepted without condition. This is now and shall always remain a private matter between these individuals and me.”

Hunter and Young lived separately at an upscale development in Chapel Hill, and later in Santa Barbara, California.

Edwards career washed up? He wants to speak at the convention? Edwards, PROVE you're NOT the father! Prove you haven't lied, yet again.

Peter E   August 8th, 2008 11:46 pm ET

It's Hillary's fault! I don't know how is that even remotely possible, but I'm sure Obama supporters will spin it that way anyway…

Vig   August 8th, 2008 11:44 pm ET

I don't understand how he could be running for President, debating, ganging up with Obama against Hillary when this skeleton was about to fall out of his closet? Are these people so short sighted? What was he thinking?

CNN how far you have sunk!! Leave the family alone; this is really none of your business.

John Edwards, trial lawyer, made his money and political name by prosecuting hard-working physicians. Helping alienate the public toward doctors. Now the medical system is in chaos, partly because of malpractice laws that dishonest Edwards helped push and benefitted from. His dishonesty and greed now comes out in another way. I'm sure glad he didn't get voted in. He would have been much worse than CLinton and maybe, perhaps half as bad as the all-time worst president, Bush (which means he's really bad)
We should have laws against lawyers running for office like we did when the country was young.

I thought we learned, under Bill Clinton, that lying about sex is not big deal. Did we move backwards?

Robert   August 8th, 2008 9:58 pm ET

Why did the MSM sit on this story for a year and yet ran with an unsubstantited rumor on John McCain with no verification?

and I wonder if Obama extracted a little "endorsement" payment from John with a little intel about this affair? After all, the Dem Party now operates on the new Chicago model of politics.

sounds eerily familiar with how Gary Mauro helped one of Bill Clinton's hussies get a job in Austin and out of D.C.

It's all over the news about Mr. Edwards, and he is no longer running for office.
Why is it not all over the news about McCain's dumping his first wife for a thin rich new wife?

do you think obama knew the edwards situation was being exposed today and maybe thats another reason he went on vacation so he wouldn't have to answer any questions about it.

Edwards is human and made a mistake. At least he did not lead us into an unwinable war.

America, GROW UP! Why is our country so obsessed with the private lives of all public figures….They have to lie, because we react as if a felony was committed. I do not want to enter the bedrooms of any person, public or not. Europeans are shocked how appalled we become. Lets be real, no one is perfect and lets deal with the job they are performing tor this nation or television, movies, whatever, not their personal life. Everyone get a dictionary and look up PERSONAL. i am ashamed with the self righteousness of this great country. Shocking……..only to those who have nothing else to report. Tune into channel 103 if you want to hear news of importance.
