Accountable America is offering a $100,00 reward.

(CNN) — Conservatives who support election-year efforts by so-called 527s and other independent groups are about to get a tough new notice: donate at your own risk.

A new liberal group, Accountable America, is offering a $100,000 reward for any information that results in “the conviction or judgment against a conservative or business-related organization” that runs afoul of federal campaign finance regulations – and is planning to send “warning” letters to roughly 10,000 major Republican donors next week laying out the PR headaches and risks they could encounter if they decide to donate outside the legal boundaries.

In a statement sent to reporters, organizers describe the new group as “an effort to deter attempts by Republican donors aimed at ‘swiftboating’ Democrats from Barack Obama to Senate and House candidates.”

Listen: Organizers lay out their plan on a conference call with reporters

The 527 advocacy organizations are independent groups that are not subject to Federal Election Commission regulations because they do not directly call for the election or defeat of candidates.

The campaign will also include a Web presence and possible television ads.

Long-time progressive operative and former MoveOn.org Washington director Tom Matzzie is heading the effort – which is targeting some top McCain donors, like Sheldon Adelson, by name.

You are not a Democrat if you're voting for McCain. Let's go ahead and clear that up. All you have to do is take the time to get off your butt and do some policy research to figure that out.

What's so bad about searching for criminal activity??? It's criminal -activity, and searching for it is American. Decrying it and hiding from it, or trying to flip it means that "conservatives" you must have something to hide. I'm sure the Dems know that once they open that door, that same scrutiny will be placed upon them, so now we really get to see who the honest candidate is. I can hear the fear in a lot of your posts now. McCain wanted to use fear tactics to make you fear Obama right?, you got your wish because I'd be trembling right now if I were a Republican. lol. Be afraid of him because he does represent change, and a change that you aren't going to like, but America is loving. The American people are speaking and your beloved conservative is losing. It's symbolicon so many levels. I love it Obama, u didn't even spearhead this, but your message encouraged others to do something positive. Sure does sound like a president to me…

what a gimmick.. how much you want to bet they never pay anyone any money?
it's like those hucksters that say "we'll give 1 million dollars to anyone who can show me the law that says you have to pay income tax", and when someone points to section 26 of the US code, they try to weasel their way out of it semantically.

these people are under no obligation to pay anyone money for anything, and i guarantee you they won't. obviously a fearmongering gimmick.. why only conservatives? they are content with shady financing for liberals?

moveon - it's been 8 years and you have YET to move on. you've been whining about bush for 8 years now… my suggestion is to MOVE ON

Wow, these people are lunatics.

If you don't like the message, don't listen to it.

Who is anyone to say how much can be spent to get a message out, or how someone spends their own money?

I find it funny that the liberals always talk about how conservatives want to kill our freedom, yet the liberals are the ones who are constantly telling everyone how to live their lives. You folks are the worst, you are hypocrites. You pick and choose parts of the constitution and jam your opinions down everyones throats, as if you are the only ones who are right.

Anyone care to research the fact that the Dem's talk about McCain's gas tax plan as a gimmick, yet they were avoiding paying the gas tax while setting up for their convention by filling up vehicles at state fueling sites - why? TO SAVE SOME MONEY. The average american can't get a break on a few bucks a gallon because we NEED the money so badly- yet the elitist liberals in the government think they can skirt the law so they can save a few bucks.

More hypocrisy from the lunatic liberals.

Grab your pitchforks and torches, my true fellow Americans- lets take a trip to Washington.

(Only after congress gets back from their 5 week vacation… Hey, how was everyone's 5 week vacation this year? Funny, i seemed to have missed mine…….What a bunch of scum bags. )

Mike in FL   August 8th, 2008 2:41 pm ET

For The Love of God:
You have a point - both conservative AND liberal 527 groups should be held accountable if they break campaign finance law, and the responsibility to indict and prosecute such groups belongs to Congress and the Executive Branch of the federal government. However, since they are both a bunch of do-nothing children who would rather not take any real responsibility, then personally I like to see each side make a stand and take their fight to the other. If we can't hold our own government accountable for upholding the law, then it is up to all of us as individuals and groups to hold each other accountable.

Obama in 2008 - Yes we can!

Listen to some of you guys, shouting out support for a group that's organized by liberal 527s to hunt down any conservative 527s and donators who break any rules and regs, yet you'd scream and cry if a conservative group did the same. Notice the $100,000 reward for any info…That's a lot of money. People with big bank accounts are funding this hunt, and throwing a lot of cash behind it, to bully their guys into office. Don't you find that the least bit suspect? Now yes, if they offered that for information on -all- 527s and donations, I wouldn't have a problem, but this is one-sided and ridiculous.

Not sleeping at the switch   August 8th, 2008 2:15 pm ET

Chris   August 8th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

While the fact this group exists and is getting press does concern me, the comments thereafter are a bigger concern. From what I understand of these 527s, the finance reform laws do not apply to them. Therefore, a republican (or democratic for that matter) donor is not doing anything illegal. There may be a debate about the nature of the group, but we cannot nor should not police thought and intention.

For those of you who see this as the best thing ever and want to hunt down those evil conservatives, I hope you realize the danger this group could potential mean to the liberal side as well.

Elections should not be witch hunts and free speech should be available to everyone. Instead of trying to hurt either side with threats and negativity, why don't we try to work together to find the best balanced course for our country to continue being great.

Perplexed   August 8th, 2008 2:14 pm ET

Obama has a more loyal base than McCain and Obama's base is growing all the time, soon it won't matter what McCain says, he'll never have enough republicans out there to even vote for him, but Obama will. As the saying goes, "safety in numbers", and the Democrats have the fastest growing voter base ever. What a brilliant idea!! Great job, moveon.org!!

Carl from MI   August 8th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

The difference between Moveon.org 527 and the GOP's 527's is all of the ILLEGAL donations the GOP's 527s have… HENCE the need for accountability and this organization.

Evil has a name… and it's name is GOP.

Party before Country, Money before Honor…

Mike, Syracuse, NY   August 8th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

Leave it to the liberals to attack freedom of speech. You can say or do anything you want, as long as it agrees with the facist liberal agenda. Who's holding Move On accountable for it's trash like the General Betray Us ad? You guys are like the stuff you scrape of the bottom of your shoes.

Raymond Duke   August 8th, 2008 1:55 pm ET

What some slimeballs . You can smell the fear of moveon . ogr. This group is nothing but a bunch of anti-america socialist like Obama and his followers. The 527's have aright within the law to express their concerns with their adds. The BLACK MESSIAH' is not president yet and we are not his slaves or followers. Moveon . Org and the Obama campagin don't care to use them foriegn contributions from overseas and the Arab countrys. They sound like a bunch of cry babies. I want to be mean to you and say what I want but I don't want you to be able to fight back.

seeing the truth   August 8th, 2008 1:54 pm ET

i am so happy Obama opted out of the tragically flawed Public Finance System…but we see how McCain's camp has found loop holes that allow the GOP to receive huge amounts of funds…

I second that Informed Voter! Very very NICE indeed. It's about time!

Susan, Macedon New York   August 8th, 2008 1:53 pm ET

I'm glad Move-on is working on this. Someone has to stop the neo-cons who have more money than ethics. That swiftboat group after Kerry was reprehensible. Too bad they were trying to re-elect two men two never served in the military by ruining the reputation of someone who risked his life to serve his country. In my opinion, that's when politics fell to the lowest point in the history of this country. It was even worse than when Bush and company stole the 2000 election.

No, it's not nice to threaten the GOP, but they brought it on themselves and they definitely need to be watched - closely. As columnist Molly Ivins once said "you all go out and enjoy your holiday. I'll watch Karl Rove because God knows somebody has to!" Boy, was she ever right on! These are nasty people!

Jake   August 8th, 2008 1:52 pm ET

Guess this is what Obama meant when he said they would campaign in the politics as usual style…..oops…my mistake, he said hope and change, hope and change, hope and change. Guess he meant everyone else needs to change, except those that would directly try to benefit him. This is sickening, but I'm sure there will be a "turnabout is fair play" response and we will be back to "politics as usual."

FLA Voter   August 8th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

You Dems are silly….IDIOTS!!!

Dou you realize that Moveon.org is a 527 goup? The swiftboat group was only started because of Moveon to counter some of the Kerry loving that is going on now with "The One".

Oh, and by-the-way 527's are legal and they CAN spend as much money as they want to crush Obama. I just hope we get the same effectiveness as we got from T. Boone (the Democrats new best friend) and his buddies.

Oh, revenge is SWEET!!!

G   August 8th, 2008 1:51 pm ET

YOU ARE ALL A BUNCH OF MORONS
along with MOVEON.ORG and the likes.

Steve, Madison WI   August 8th, 2008 1:50 pm ET

I agree this group should target any group breaking the rules. But be honest, it is the Repubs that admit they try to suppress the vote of those that are likely to vote Democratic (yes, there are tapes from specches, etc. that prove this is their strategy - look it up). Diebold, a Repub corp. conveniently cannot provide a paper trail fro their voting machines, Repugs swiftboated Kerry, put out ads on Obama like "The One" and "The Celeb", send out false e-mails calling Obama a Muslim and "unpatriotic", ansd spawned the likes of Karl Rove - need I say more! So, I think it is more likely to see a Repug running a dishonest, sleazy campaign - facts is facts!

The Republicans have become bigots, biased hate-mongers, and constitution killers.

Tell me again why anyone would support such a group of people.

This party was hi-jacked by the Neo-Cons some time ago and is no longer the party I supported for over 25 years.

I cannot in good conscience support a party that is moving toward fascism. I have two simple filters for this coming election:
1) Anyone incumbent in Congress I can vote against, I will
2) If #1 above does not apply or there is a conflict, I vote DEM

Beverly, NYC   August 8th, 2008 1:45 pm ET

Dear ps:

The DNC learned from the best, the RNC & Rove. Obviously you have not been paying attenion to the issues the last 18 months. We'll have Obama take out ads in the tabloid of your choice, since that seems to be the mentality and reading ability of McCain and his supporters. What's the matter, not so funny when the little guy fights back!!!

If Obama truly means what he says about change, he should immediately denounce this anti-free speech tactic.

Independent-Latina-for-OBAMA   August 8th, 2008 1:44 pm ET

With all his expenditures on negative ads, why isn't the USED TO BE maverick not soaring in the polls??

demwit   August 8th, 2008 1:42 pm ET

Hmmmmm…

A new liberal group is offering a $100,000 reward for any information that runs afoul of federal campaign finance regulations, BUT, 527 advocacy organizations are independent groups that are not subject to Federal Election Commission regulations.

Anyone else see the progressive logic in this argument??

Absolutely unbelievable. Moveon.org shut down its 527 a month ago so it could find another way to wage its war against free speech. God forbid some of the 527s could disseminate information on the airwaves usually reserved for newsanchors fawning over Obama. Including the word "conservative" in the "bounty" illustrates the pathetic nature of this contemptible organization. "New politics", huh? The radical right wing of the republican party has been lying to it's people to get there agenda pushed forward basically so that the richest 1% of white Americans live in luxury while you and I make it check by check. I was a republican for many years and can not believe this radical right has completely corrupted my party. I am glad they are doing this these 527's need to be shut down on both sides of the line both liberal and right wing nut! We also need to stop these pac's. We have a system of democracy and all these things have been created as a way to go around the democracy we supposedly believe in.

This is what "taking back AMERICA" is all about. It is time to put another race in the White House, and it should be called quite frankly, "America's House" the term white-house is an subliminal message by the GOP and the likes of the Clintons to say "they don't look like us". The times they are changing, and the Democrats prove they will not be out manuevered this year or anytime in the future. OBAMA Nation has awakened the sleeping giant and in two months and a half, America will elect the First Bi-Racial President in it's 230+ years, Oh what a day in the life of this nation. CHANGE is on the way for Asian's, Latino's-Hispanics, Blacks, Whites, First Americans. This will be a glorious day in America on November 5th, when OBAMA is elected, then on January 19th, 2008, on the Lincoln Memorial, when the next great leader from the "GREAT STATE OF ILLINOIS" will ensure the beginning of "A MORE PERFETC UNION". The idea to offer a reward is grand, not this time GOP/RNC, this is our moment, this is the time we have been waiting for! The Dawn of a New Era-OBAMA 08 and beyond!

There are democratic 527 donors as well.

There go our 1st amendment rights, courtisy the democRATs.

Why isn't MoveOn.org being targeted, they are one the worst, with all of the lies and propagada that they put out.

This group is definitely needed. Senator McCain has gotten so nasty of late with some outright lies and other questionable things - and it is a shame. I would not have voted for him in the first place but thought he would run an honorable campaign but have since learned that he is not. He has let the Karl Rove types lead him around like he has a loop in his nose that they yank on and he does exactly what they tell him to do. Those 527s will be more vicious than Senator McCain's Karl Rove types.

Alan   August 8th, 2008 1:14 pm ET

I think it is admirable to limit the ability of 527's to slander any candidate. To bad this organization wants to hold only conservative groups accountable. Why not a large reward for any 527 who slanders a candidate? Apparently, they only want accountability for those who hold differing views.

perhaps CNN and the rest of the media should stop being propaganda machines and not give free ad time to McCaibn's ads without at least fact checking them within the article.

Perhaps you could start by giving equal time to the DNCs ad responding to McCain's ad of him being a maverick…..he is a USED to be maverick as revealed by the same people in his ad decrying his role as a maverick.

Peter NYC   August 8th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

That is laughable. Do they think they are going to deter anyone with that? I never gave money to a 527 in my life but I am thinking about doing so now just to stick it to these one-sided pseudo-do-gooders who apparently don't care at all about left-leaning 527s but I guess that is because they are so patently ineffectual and couldn't even defeat GWB!!! GWB!!! (Who I didn't vote for, by the way). John Kerry Swiftboated himself by trying to make his 4-month combat service record more than it was and on allowing others (I am sure it wasn't his idea) to do the "Reporting for Duty…" thing at the convention. He will never be president of anything. Obama may well be president someday but I would bet my life on it that it will not be in 2009.

NotFallingInLine.org   August 8th, 2008 1:07 pm ET

Something like the efforts of this group might have helped Kerry in 2004 by making up for his own inadequacies.

This year, no ‘swiftboating’ of Barack Obama will be necessary.

All that Republicans have to do - and all that those Democrats who have not forgotten core principles of democracy have to do - is remind the public regularly about exactly what Barack Obama really is:

an unknown, inexperienced and unprincipled rhetorician without a record.

Lesley   August 8th, 2008 1:06 pm ET

Well with the tv news media picking up every Obama ad of McCain's and playing up his negative campaign, he really doesn't need much money from 527s. The media it appears is still his base and will give him all the free advertising and propping up he will need.
