(CNN) – The woman who had an extramarital affair with former presidential candidate John Edwards won't seek a paternity test to prove whether he's the father of her 5-month-old child, her lawyer said Saturday.

In a statement he provided to the Washington Post, attorney Robert Gordon said Rielle Hunter is a private citizen and that she will not comment further on the media frenzy sparked Friday when Edwards publicly acknowledged the affair.

"She wishes to maintain her privacy" and the privacy of her child, Gordon said in the statement. "Furthermore, Rielle will not participate in DNA testing or any other invasion of her ... privacy now or in the future."

Gordon confirmed to CNN that he provided a statement to the Post. He said Saturday he would not immediately be releasing the statement to anyone else and will not be doing interviews about it.

After months of denying the affair, Edwards admitted making "a serious error in judgment" in 2006 when he had an affair with Hunter, a filmmaker who worked making videos for his presidential campaign.

He said her child is not his, as had been claimed in tabloid reports, saying the timing of the affair would make that impossible. A former Edwards campaign aide, Andrew Young, has publicly said the child is his.

Edwards said he was willing to take a paternity test to clear up the question.

"Happy to take a paternity test ... would love to see it happen," he said in an interview with ABC News.

Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, was the Democratic vice-presidential nominee in 2004. He made an unsuccessful bid for his party's nomination in this year's election and had been considered a possible VP choice for presumptive nominee Sen. Barack Obama - or a contender for attorney general or another top government post if Obama wins in November.

if she wants to maintain her privacy....she shouldn't have slept with an insanely public figure.

Annie   August 10th, 2008 1:53 am ET

I'd like to know what reason she doesn't want the kid to have a test. If Edwards is willing to do it, she should too unless she is lying and the other guy, Andrew Young, is really the father.

Rob indetroit   August 10th, 2008 1:52 am ET

This is none of our business!!!!

prezobama   August 10th, 2008 1:32 am ET

I think an investigation into who really paid for her "hush" money needs to be launched: Fred Baron, Edwards' campaign finance director, or the actual campaign donations? Something still seems fishy. I think the child is his.

Mark Ramsey MD Milwaukee WI   August 10th, 2008 1:21 am ET

Of course this was orchestrated. He already knew she would say no to testing before he said yes to it. Can you say "da da"?

Joel   August 10th, 2008 12:50 am ET

Wow, a has-been politician is revealed to have cheated on his sick wife and the world comes to an end. McCain _dumped_ his sick wife for a rich heiress half his age. Where's the moral outrage about that?

J.P.   August 10th, 2008 12:50 am ET

John Edwards......LOL!

mike   August 10th, 2008 12:49 am ET

Edwards is a traitor. He put our country at risk for his own personal interests. He should be tried as such. Had he won the presidency, and this sordid story come out after, it would have seriously damaged our international credibility. There are those in prison now for the same consequences from "what if" scenarios. Why should he be held to a lesser standard?

He knew he was an untenable candidate while running,. Or at the least knew he couldn't achieve the office to which he pretended to aspire. In addition to criminal penalties, contributors to his campaign should be due a refund – paid from his personal funds.

Greg   August 10th, 2008 12:48 am ET

I feel bad for everyone involved. I wish Elizabeth, Rielle and John all the best.
BTW, has anyone seen the Cindy McCain tape they are talking about?!?!

Brian, Pittsbrugh   August 10th, 2008 12:48 am ET

The Edwards Affair sure is getting a lot of press coverage. You'd think he was a presidential candidate. Here's a better question...

Senator John McCain, have you ever had an affair? YES, he has. But I haven't it ONCE in the mainstream media.

jason   August 10th, 2008 12:40 am ET

who cares! this is between him and his wife – the rest of the country would rather know about his voting record and rationale for that voting record. if he cheats on his wife – oh well! that's really none of our business! Why do you media bafoons feed us this drama crap, but never give us anything that effects WE THE PEOPLE?

BK   August 10th, 2008 12:39 am ET

Makes it sound like she knows its not his and just wants to keep doubt in the air to give him even more grief. Its none of our business; its between him and his wife. I never understand why pent up religious zealots have to be so sex-crazed and obsessed with this kind of news. I guess they're pent up.

Abby   August 10th, 2008 12:36 am ET

Edwards is a Disgrace! A Liar & FRAUD.
Shame on the DNC for not checking this guy out – just like obama.

SID KLEIN   August 10th, 2008 12:25 am ET

IM JUST THANKFUL HE LOST THE ELECTION IN
BUT HE DID NOT DO ANYTHING THAT WAS NOT DONE BY PRESIDENTS IN THE PAST

non white & non-black person   August 10th, 2008 12:12 am ET

i guess it's okay for McCain to cheat on his disabled wife but it's wrong for a democrat to do it. I guess there are different rules for the republicans and democrats(both are wrong for cheating), it looks like Bush really scared the crap outta america. We can't even question when a republican does something wrong. I mean why aren't the republicans getting the same scrutiny as dems.

m.c.   August 10th, 2008 12:08 am ET

Could this "lack of good judgement" also be the reason Edwards endorsed Obama and not Hillary???

Heartlight 3, Maui, HI   August 9th, 2008 11:49 pm ET

If she cared about him and his career at all she would be willing to have a paternity test done immediately to prove either that the baby is his or it is not. I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, but refusing to have a paternity test done is selfish and inconsiderate. It makes me wonder if she is deliberately trying to damage him.

WHY DOESN'T CNN COMPARE JOHN MCAIN'S AFFAIR TO JOHN EDWARD'S AFFAIR. THEY BOTH CHEATED ON THEIR WIFES.

Ben Martin   August 9th, 2008 11:19 pm ET

I wonder if you who are critical of Edwards because of his infidelity, will have the same cricism for McCain. McCain cheated on his former wife Carol, who was suffering from debilitating injuries stemming from a car accident. McCain left his wife, who was also 2 years younger than him, for a woman 17 years his junior.

If you find Edward’s actions repulsive, you should be twice as repulsed by McCain’s.

True Texan   August 9th, 2008 11:17 pm ET

If the John Edwards issue gets pushed too much, I wonder if the fact John McCain had an extra marital affair to end his first marriage will come up.

JB illinois   August 9th, 2008 11:10 pm ET

Has she made a lot of films lately ? It takes a lot of money to raise a child alone, and move out of state. Who expects the people to believe this nonsense? We should have known, any man who politics for the poor and then gets himself a 400 dollar hair cut is not, what he says he is. Americans are the best at overlooking the so very obvious.

aliousalam FL   August 9th, 2008 11:09 pm ET

John Mccain had several affairs while he was still married to an ill wife who had become handicaped because of an accident while he was in jail.

After jail, Mccain chased women all over washington and settled to divorce his wife to marry cindy.

He is still running for president and no one is finding anything wrong with such a let down.

It goes to his character. will he ever stand for anything than his pleasure and interest?

The media is not interested in talking about this Mccain's affairs and his lack of character in abandonning his handicaped wife.

Is that not media bias? a lot of people in this country still don't know who Mcain is even t hough the media has been talking to him for decades.

but we know who Obama sleeps with or dine with, how many growth dariha he had as a baby.

Curtis Marsh   August 9th, 2008 11:01 pm ET

This is always the risk when a nation turns it's elected officials into rock stars. We don't have public servants, we have celebrities. We have politicians who can write themselves personal campaign checks for millions, who are paid 200K a year. In this case Edwards needs to be investigated immediately for campaign finance violations. Where did the money come from for the hush money to his mistress. And what ever happened to feminism. In the 70's liberated women said they they would not be a doormat to a man. In today's HIllary's style feminism it appears the paycheck is more important than personal pride.

Her Bluff Was Called   August 9th, 2008 11:00 pm ET

She backed down on "demanding" a paternity test, when Edwards said "Fine – let's do it." The reason – now she knows it won't get her anything. One of the other men involved in the Edwards campaign now claims paternity, so she was apparently having sex with several of them. Maybe she's the kind of woman who uses her body in hope of shaking down someone rich and famous. None of that exonerates Edwards. But it's an example of how common it is for women to use sex to troll after rich famous men.

Independent Voter   August 9th, 2008 10:56 pm ET

A lot of money finding its way to this woman and the others involved. Even if Edwards has no guts, he DOES have money. And my bet is that he has paid her to refuse the paternity test.

And he's paid Andrew Young to claim fatherhood. Edwards will be supporting these two in the style to which they have become accustomed for the rest of his life – or at least the rest of Elizabeth's life.

And after that as long as he believes he might get a crack at a government post, either elected or appointed.

Here's a real life example of "The Audacity of Hope."

He can afford it. He's got all that money that he hangs onto while telling others to help the poor.

JV Jermn   August 9th, 2008 10:50 pm ET

It is unfortunate to see a talent like Edwards make a mistake. However the public does have a short memory and over time he could always bounce back. He is also a talented attorney and could go back to ambulance chasing at least for a period of time.

Ella   August 9th, 2008 10:46 pm ET

Part of a carefully orchestrated lie by a politician!
A one-time senator, somewhat unknown, too unknown, untrusted!
Trying to rely on legal issues to save himself from a bigger public
humiliation... beware!

Heather   August 9th, 2008 10:44 pm ET

Like what was talked about last night on The Situation Room and Larry King and AC360,a man doesn't leave his wife and kids for a trip to The Beverly Hilton to seea women he supposedly doesn't has have a relationshiop with and hold a baby that isn't his unless he IS the father. He has met with her so many times at this hotel that he established a pattern of bahavior let led to a tip to the Nat Inq.I am sure this is no way over.No matter how much all parties want it to.I'm sure Edwards paid her off.I'm sure he told about the interview. He told her what he would say. That way she had time to respond.Plus why would any mother of a child leave the fathers name blank on the birth certificate unless she knows Edwards is the father! CNN or the Nat Inq will find out where the money she was paid came from.Imagine the reaction when it turns out presidential campaign money was used, could be.Edwards needs to come clean, sorry that's 100% !

jimmy   August 9th, 2008 10:43 pm ET

BEST TO LEAVE THE MAN AND HIS FAMILY ALONE. HE AND FAMILY ARE SUFFERING. PUBLIC HUMILIATION IS A VERY PAINFUL THING.

jim   August 9th, 2008 10:38 pm ET

Didn't McCain admit to having an affair with his current wife while his ex-wife was ill?? If so, why is the media ignoring that?

Richie   August 9th, 2008 10:36 pm ET

I'm guessing this affair is enough to keep Edwards off the Democratic ticket. Why doesn't the fact that McCain did the same thing matter?

Anita   August 9th, 2008 10:34 pm ET

Why is it such big news about Edwards having an affair? In Washington D.C. he is not the first nor will he be the last to do such a thing. I agree that it is not the right thing to do, both morally and politically,, but in these times of such blatant immorality in our country and in the world nothing should be a shock anymore.

JIM...TX   August 9th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

Ms Hunter does not want to participate in any invasion of her privacy???? The lady was messing around with a married man and whose wife has a terminal illness which I'm sure she was aware of. Too bad if her privacy is invaded. She should have thought about that before she was playing with the rat Edwards!

aaaaa   August 9th, 2008 10:28 pm ET

okay wow He had a sex with someone big deal we are all humans and we do the same thing. Bush kills millions of people around the war with his oil buddies and no one is on the news or tried for war crimes!!!!!!!!!!!!! get over it cnn report something that benefits America people

ML - California   August 9th, 2008 10:26 pm ET

This whole fiasco with Edwards is a waste of everybody's time. If this man wants to have other relations while married, that is his business.
He is the one that has to "pay the price". Move on media, there are other more serious matters in this country!

Ivan, Chicago, Illinois   August 9th, 2008 10:24 pm ET

Didn't Edwards jump all over President Clinton?
The number of politicians are too numurous to list here that attacked
President Clinton while they had or were doing the same.

Cath   August 9th, 2008 10:23 pm ET

While this is a real shame and my prayers go out to his family, really how different is this than McCain and his affairs (ending with his affair with Cindy!!!)...McCain's first wife was in a horrific car accident and then she was dumped...what about his first kids!!!!! What about the fact that McCain is paying for all of the medical bills for his first wife (guilt, I guess!)...so, how come the press doesn't seem to be delving into this aspect of the presumptive nominees life, but they are all a twitter over Edwards, who is no longer running??? Where is the equality in reporting we always hear about??? How come Cafferty hasn't picked up on this, he is usually the best at scoping out the truth!!!

Aundre   August 9th, 2008 10:20 pm ET

If course she won't let a paternity test happen. She has him exactly where she wants him. Paying hush money, she knows he's not the father, but she has the upper hand doesn't she!

Anonymous   August 9th, 2008 10:16 pm ET

Elizabeth Edwards and John Edwards have started to work through this, that should be enough. Like Elizabeth said it is a private matter as she would like to keep it that way and we should respect her wishes.

GOOD. now maybe this highly personal tragedy that is replayed over and over and over again will be off my TV screen soon.

Fox's panel interview with an executive from the National Enquirer was so enlightening. Fair and Balanced.

Good thing adultery is no longer a criminal offense (of course, I refer to a time VERY LONG ago). The way these news channels play out missing persons/murder cases...there is clearly no guarantee of a fair trial before one's peers anymore.

Edwards would be stoned before he had a chance to vote for his endorsee in November.

John is repentent. Elizabeth/family/friends are gracious.
Let's move on.

Voter from California   August 9th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

This sounds rather suspicious. It seems like they all have an agreement to keep this a secret. Edwards could be the father, even if he denies it: he has lied once already, why not lie again about the baby? Hopefully, Edwards will not campaign for Obama, or the democrats can say good-bye to the White House already. I do not necessarily judge Edwards on his affair – that is his personal life, but I do judge him on the fact that he lied repeatedly when confronted publicly about it, and that he goes around talking about moral values when he clearly has none (cheating on your wife when when she is in remission from cancer is awful, so why talk about moral values to the rest of the nation?)

Sheri   August 9th, 2008 10:14 pm ET

I dare not touch that except to say, I hope it's not true.

Don Murphy   August 9th, 2008 10:13 pm ET

American's take this stuff too seriously. It has nothing to do with how good of a public servant the man has been or how good he could be. Public servants and private citizens alike have done this sort of thing since before recorded history. In the days before the religious right, the press had enough brains to ignore this kind of nonsense and so did the American public. It's time to let people do what we pay them for instead of expecting them all to be saints. We all know how "saintly" the loudest voices of the religious right are. Just read the papers or listen to the news. Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone. What, nobody wants to pick up a rock now?

faithsem   August 9th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Hmmm lets see....he's found in the hotel with her for 5 hours...then 2 wks later he comes out and says the child is not his and that the affair ended in 2006...he is willing to do the paternity(sp) test...she wants no part of it says her lawyer...as they say down souh...this baby don't cry right! My heart goes out to John Edwards wife, who is dx with the uncurable cancer and the children....

Charlotte   August 9th, 2008 10:11 pm ET

Obama best watch out for his EGO it might get him into big trouble. John Edwards knows about EGO. Obama acts as if he is, THE ONE. I cannot believe the DNC (Dumb Nuts Committee) and their choice for the nominee. I received a donation request from them, and I sent it back with a notation, No money/No vote. Main reason, Kennedy, Kerry, Dean, and Pelosi..I hope they can't pay for the football stadium Obama wants to pat himself on the back. His Presidential Seal was the biggest turn off for this voter. I am beginning to believe he is the Anti-Christ, nothing else explains his popularity. I mean really, what on his resume, qualifies him for the job of POTUS?

Mark, B'ham., Al.   August 9th, 2008 10:10 pm ET

Being a Liberal Democrat, Edwards lack of character and integrity does not disqualify him from being selected to a democratic party administration as a cabinet member. If the democratic party made integrity and character a sacred criteria ,it would be as hard for them to fill positions as it would be to make experimenting with drugs was used as a disqualify criteria. They are the party of you are not responsible for your actions and the government will be your nanny!

Jeanine G   August 9th, 2008 10:04 pm ET

suspicious, sounds like she is looking forward to keeping her stock up for longer then 15 minutes. gotta cash in....string it along....then...finally...do the test. Ahhhhhhh...the suspense makes her richer.

MR. Edwards;;;;

You were the one person I thought would amount to something. Was that little escapade worth your career and the hurt that yuo have caused to your family.

It seems like everyone who is in politics, has extramarital affairs.
You did it to yourself. and using the cancer that your wife had or has is no excuse.

You are now all washed up on the political scene. I thought you were better that the other people who do this sort of thing.
Its politics as usual

my reaction is disbelief, however John Edwards is not running for any office .that being said the matter should between the husband and the wife although that will never happen god forbid. In any case the dirty old republican party (and I do mean dirty old men) will play this out like they dont have anything to do that is important to issues, pure and simple. As a country we should forgive and we are human and we often sin and that suchmust forgive but the dirty old republicans wont forget. Its election year and the dirty old republican will do anything to achieve winning and at the expense of other peoples suffering.
