WASHINGTON (CNN) – John McCain is using his weekly radio address today to continue to attack his opponent, Barack Obama, as a celebrity.
“The Democratic National Convention is just a couple of weeks away. It was four years ago, at the same gathering, that America heard a fine speech from an Illinois state senator named Barack Obama. He's done pretty well for himself since then. And the smart money in Denver is on another celebrated performance,” says McCain in the recorded address.
“But even the most stirring speeches are easily forgotten when they're short on content. Taking in my opponent's performances is a little like watching a big summer blockbuster, and an hour in realizing that all the best scenes were in the trailer you saw last fall. In the way of running mates, Senator Obama should consider someone with a knack for brevity and directness, to balance the ticket,” adds the presumptive GOP presidential nominee.
The McCain campaign first termed Obama a celebrity in a television campaign commercial over a week ago. Since then it appears to have become a theme with the campaign, showing up in a number of ads.
In the radio address, McCain also criticizes Obama’s energy policies and touting his own, saying “a serious energy plan involves a lot more yeses than nos. And that is why I say yes to drilling, here and now. Yes to 45 more nuclear power plants to provide our country with electricity. Yes to clean coal technology, so that we can create jobs and use America's most abundant resource. Yes to renewable energy sources, so that we can shift away from petroleum over the long term. Yes to a break from the federal gasoline tax, so that our government helps you in a time of need instead of just adding to your costs. In short, yes to all of the above - to a bold plan for achieving energy independence that starts today.”
McCain heads to Las Vegas later today, to address the annual convention of the Disabled Americans Veterans.

McCain is a a slim bag. I wonder if some of the disablied Americans will remember John McCain's first wife. The one he ditched while she was in a bad car wreak and disfigured to marry Cindy and her money. McCain has been in the Senate for 26 years - doing what? Now all he can do is slam Barack. McCain can't manage his own campaign. How can he ever manage the USA. He has already said he wouldn't take with nation leader's. McCain is a Warmonger.
McCain is a disgrace to the American people.
John McCain may find attacking Obama to be an appealing strategy for laughing it up with superficial voters that would prefer McCain anyway, but the reasoning part of the electorate is taking notice of the fact that McCain not only constantly attacks Obama, but also has nothing useful or convincing to say about himself.
Interesting that another talented orator and celebrity – I think they called him the Great Communicator – used rhetoric and star power in the same way – with even less reliance on cerebral substance – and the right wing political machine and its followers had no problem embracing him to the point of even now claiming to BE him. Hmm, what happened? I have an idea; they became bankrupt of substance and ideas and had no other choice but to attack. Yes, it's time for a change.
Mccain you do sound like a sore looser. rather have a celebrity than other clown, like the one we have at the white house. you must be desperate.
Man this my friends is addicted to his fear and smear, attack, attack, attack, keeps on attacking never get tired of it. What a McShame and McBush lifestyle, so help me God with this man's got addicted personalities. He's so out of touch, he just mentioned it and he is the one, one, one, one, anti Christ.
McCain is fixated on Obama. Get on with the issues of the American people, old man.
I guarantee it is not the "celebrity" of Obama.
I
This guy is in love with Obama. He can't stop himself form mentioning him every time he opens his mouth. This celebrity stuff is gettign old and I'm tired of the media making a big deal out of it every time McCain says somehtign about it. Again, I think the way to shut McCain up on this is to run an ad that pieces together all the clips of him on SNL, 24, Wedding Crashers and his made-for-tv movie. This guy HOSTED SNL c'mon, how many US Sentors have hosted a comedy tv show? Obama needs to take the gloves off for a bit ad slam this clown.
I a running mate I suggest McCain picks someone with a brain.
Too bad that the "content" of McCain's speeches and ads are mostly about trying to flatten Obama. He might do better if he chose to remain dignified and deal with the real issues. Who admires mud-slinging? I would hate to think that the American people would be so gullible as to believe and vote in accordance with these desperately exaggerated ideas of McCain's! Bravo Obama for remaining dignified and focused.
Macain is simple on on jelous man.you have debate obama base on issues not on his celebrity status.obama is good for america john macain you are not.
Frankly, the one who's been lacking content is McCain. All he's capable of is attacking Obama, offering "gas tax holiday" plans that virtually all economists say won't work, insulting foreign countries by joking about killing Iranians, or saying Germans basically don't matter, whining about his lack of press coverage, and on and on.
When will McCain show us any substance?
So McCain's main angle of attack is that Obama is popular and inspires citizens to enter politics... might remind folks of the fact that this guy beat the Clinton machine, a feat all media outlets declared impossible. Or that his supporters are actually willing to put their money where their mouths are (which can't be said for HRC _or_ McCain). Might remind folks that this guy is popular because he's youngish, super-smart, shows excellent judgment, and works harder than three McCains would. Quite the strategy, Johnny!
I'm not sure it's a great strategy to identify your opponent as a "celebrity", because part of the celebrity status is due to Obama's beathtaking performance in out-organizing and out-campaigning and out fund-raising the vaunted Clinton machine. His celebrity status is also partly due to his All-American story of rising from poverty to great leadership at Harvard and in designing and effecting terrific change in South Chicago as a neighborhood organizer.
No one ever accused John McCain of organizing anything.
So far as experience is concerned, Barack Obama has more elective experience than either Abraham Lincoln or Bobbie Kennedy when they ran for the Presidency.
Wow, somebody is turning green with envy...
THE MAN[MCCAIN] IS OBSESSED!!!!! AT THIS POINT I AGREE WITH PARIS HE IS A WRINKLED OLD WHITE HAIRED DUDE, HE DOSN'T LOOK PRESIDENTIAL, , HE NEVER DID, HIS WRINKLED UP SHIRT SLEEVES AND HIS BELT IS ALWAYS BELOW HIS BELLY, OBAMA LOOKS PRESIDENTIAL HE DID FROM DAY ONE AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO, AND WILL BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT!! MCCAIN IS NOT ONLY OBSESSED ,HE IS JEALOUS OF OBAMA, HE WILL CONTINUE TO SLING MUD TILL THE VERY END, AND IT IS GOING TO ALL BACKFIRE ON HIM!!!!!! HE IS A CARBON COPY OF BUSH, IMPRESSED WITH HIMSELF,VILE TEMPERED,STUBBORN,WAR MONGER,AND DUMB AS DIRT!!!!!!!!!!!!!{AND NEVER READS}
If McCain wants to win the election he needs to get off the attcaks and offer positive reasons why he would make a better president than Obama. All I've heard lately are attack ads. If you examine the strategy that Obama used in the Democratic primaries, he avoided getting dragged into the attack startegies and it paid off.
There does seem to be a shift in strategies that work and McCain needs to wake up. I would like to hear more about how he can do things better, I think he does offer a viable alternative. However, if he and his advisors continue along these lines a democratic will occupy the White ouse staring next January.
I get the feeling that McCain is going to vote for Obama himself whether by accident (age wise) or he really likes him...
I had a lot of respect for McCain going into the general election, but it is rapidly eroding. His arguments are just plain stupid and make no sense. Everything McCain is accusing Obama of lately has no bearing whatsoever on anything and he's accusing Obama of being exactly what he himself is, a popular politician... I'm just not buying the whole, "Obama is popular and that means he's bad" gimmick.
Here we go with this "celebrity" crap again. John, do you EVER plan to talk about the issues?
MACAIN YOU HATING ON OBAMA BECAUSE AMERICA LOVE HIM.
It was barely funny the first time but now its getting old.. sort like McCain. The adds sound bitter. Attack him on his record not on the fact he is young or inexperienced... so was Bush, Regan & Kennedy.
The questions is why did McCain take so long to run for president after 25 years in government? Oh thats right .. the Keating 5 thing had to die down.
McCain should talk about why he should be president and let the people decide
No wonder McCain had no comment about John Edwards and the affair. When you have the samething in your closet how can you make a comment!
Maybe instead of pretending to be president by having a weekly radio address, Mccain should use his celebrity to tell the American people what he plans to do to make our lives better. Oh, that's right, his only plan is to bas Obama.
I say NO to 4 more years of the same. We need change!!
Obama '08
It's interesting that a democratic nominee comes to the forefront who is a good orator for sure, but at the same time comes off as somewhat arrogant and an elitist - usually traits one reserved for the republican nominee.
Says the person that hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live and had a cameo appearance in the movie The Wedding Crashers. Hypocrite.
