From

ERIE, Pennsylvania (CNN) – John McCain had dinner Sunday with former Gov. Tom Ridge, before they begin a two-day campaign swing through Pennsylvania.

Anytime McCain appears with someone that might be on his vice presidential shortlist, it stirs up a whole new round of speculation. And as Pennsylvania is a key battleground state, Ridge’s trip is getting plenty of attention.

Ridge greeted McCain on the tarmac at Erie International Airport when the candidate arrived. They hugged and chatted briefly before getting in the motorcade. A McCain aide handed Ridge a McCain hat, which he held as they talked.

If the presumptive Republican nominee needed any reminder of Ridge’s prominence, the airport is also named “Tom Ridge Field” in the hometown politico’s honor. The former Homeland Security Secretary grew up in Erie, and began his career there.

They then went to the Smuggler’s Wharf Restaurant on the waterfront in Erie. The two posed for pictures as they sat down with Ridge’s wife Michelle and daughter Leslie.

How come the Republicans have idols like Ronald Reagon-MOVIE STAR, and Gov. Arnie Terminator-MOVIE STAR/MR-UNIVERSE, while trashing Obama for inspirering large crowds? How dare that Democrate grab some of their lime light! Ridge won't help you McBush. The current Gov. of PA backs Obama. Go watch an old black and white movie featuring Reagen and Gonzo.

Ridge helped Bush with his fear mongering remember the color coded security alerts, Ridge lied to the american people right along with Bush, so much for mccain distance from bush WHEN WILL SOME OF YOU PEOPLE WAKE UP AND SEE MCCAIN= BUSH THIRD TERM!!!!!!!!!!

Rob S.C.   August 11th, 2008 11:08 am ET

Tom Ridge is teaching John McCain how to induce fear into the American people by manipulating the Terror Warning System, just like he did for Bush. Anyone surprised?

Please show that cliip over and over. We got all of Obama's stuff over and over for months.

Just don't think Ridge will help him unless he feels that independents will suddenly flock his direction. OR that somehow Ridge can swing Pennsylvania.
In fact, evangelicals are even more likely to not go to polls. And with Obama's ground game going full throttle, suppressed turnout by evangelicals clearly hurts McCain.

No Hillary on Ticket = No vote for Obama

Go McCain!!!

Please pick Ridge   August 11th, 2008 10:59 am ET

McCain already has problems with his conservative base (probably because everyone knows he's an agnostic). Picking a pro-choice VP would be excellent! This would really help us in places like VA and NC. Obama all the way baby!!!!!!!!!!

Herman in LA   August 11th, 2008 10:59 am ET

Don't forget the food taster…

DJ in TX   August 11th, 2008 10:51 am ET

For some reason, I don't think this helps McCain. Ridge is pro-choice (as romney once was). While this might help a few independents, it could alienate some conservatives.

And what's this rumor that he's only going to run for one term? Sounds like a ploy to get Hillary's supporters.

Value-Added Vote   August 11th, 2008 10:47 am ET

McCain is having a very hard time finding someone to be his VP. Don't think the Ridge connection is going to work because Ridge is too smart to fall into a failure trap and he would make McCain look much more weak than he already does.

BJ in PA   August 11th, 2008 10:36 am ET

Ridge is the guy who used his ridiculous "Customer Choice" program to get elected. Because of that, PA residents are now experiencing the largest electric rate increases ever and almost all of the electric utilities are owned by companies from other states. "You have the right to choose!"…There are no choices, but feel free to pick any of them. He is an excellent choice, McCain! Why not put him in charge of your "energy plan" ? LOL

OBAMA 08!

J.C.   August 11th, 2008 10:34 am ET

McCain/Ridge is a great ticket for the Republicans.

Governor Ridge's extensive executive and economic experiences will compliment Senator McCain very well.

Too bad Ridge is Pro-Choice… McSame will never draw in the Religious Radical Right and the other GOP Extremists if he chooses Ridge… too bad!!

This is EXACTLY why McCain is no longer the 'Maverick'… he doesn't do what he wants anymore (Like choosing Ridge for his VP), he only does whatever he has to in order to pander to the GOP and Conservatives JUST to get elected.

He gave up… he's any empty suit now and just an empty husk of a man. Who would vote for this fake and loser… besides the fakes and losers who support him on here. WAKE UP, AMERICA!!!

America wake up ! For gods sake! Republicans are bad for this country. It use to be farmers, carpenters , average joes where elected to the house and senate and Pres postions. Now its sneaky lawyers who don't care enough for there own country men to be honest and fair. Mc Cain is no different hes a Republican . Republicans care less for whats right, and none for the poor. They complain about giving help to the poor. Can you belive that. But then give huge amounts of money to companys they support , companys not familys , not kids. They want are kids to fight there wars. When there kids are in school getting law degrees . Wake up or shake up.

Paul from Texas   August 11th, 2008 10:21 am ET

Well McCain still has not picked a VP yet. If he did it may help him in the race for the White House. I think Obma already knows who he wants. But is keeping it underwraps until McBush makes his mind up or can he really make his mind up or will he have to read it of a card who he or someone else picked as VP.

M. Winners, Mesa, AZ   August 11th, 2008 10:19 am ET

AVEE capitalcityVA   August 11th, 2008 10:15 am ET

Despite all McCain's claims of Obama's inexperience, know this. Bill Clinton was right. No one is really ready to be President. Being a Senator is not O.J.T for being P.O.T.U.S. All McCain's 26 years in the Senate says is he is now part of the game. He can't be the candidate of change. He is jaded.
His Drill Here Drill Now battle cry is B.S. Gas didn't go up overnight. Why didn't he say this while campaigning for the nomination? Wake up people, if you are not better off than you were 8 years ago, I suggest you take another look at Obama. Believe me, he can't do worst than what Bush has done or what Warlord McCain will do.

I wonder if Thomas Ridge is also the fictional name of the evil wizard in the Harry Potter stories ? Eeek CNN moderators, what's happening with my posts?

Your comment is awaiting moderation.
There are numerous issues with many of the people on McCain's purported VP list.

Ridge's pro-choice stance will hurt McCain's appeal to conservative voters.

I dare McCain to pick Carly Fiorina. It is incomprehensible that her name could even be on that list - fired from her position at HP after pillaging the company and sending numerous jobs overseas, no government experience, etc. That would be a match made in heaven for Obama supporters.

BTW, where were the CNN moderators this weekend??? Even McCain worked this weekend.

Richard J   August 11th, 2008 9:46 am ET

McCain is not another Bush and whoever he picks will be a lot better than obama's choice. McCain speaks the truth. Obama lies everytime he opens his mouth. He will end up making you sick if you vote for this liar and fool.

Pat   August 11th, 2008 9:41 am ET

Personally I don't think McSame's Short List stirs up as much speculation as tribulation! While he constantly Campaigns on Change
he consistently surrounds himself with past members of the Bush Administration. Why would a candidate seeking to win the White House continually "Stay the Course" with a current Administration that has the lowest ratings in history and is viewed with nothing but contempt around the world! Tom Ridge ! If McSame considers his calibre of Politics a plus he better not give us his Senator's Position!
McSame hasn't got a prayer! Why doesn't he step down and let George run again! At least we'd have the original copy vs.a clone!

Except for the fact that he helps swing PA toward McCain, I'm not sure Ridge adds anything to the ticket. He has great national security credentials, but isn't that supposed to be McCain's forte any way? McCain needs someone to shore up his economic and domestic policy shortcomings.

Richard J   August 11th, 2008 9:21 am ET

Ridge would be a great running mate. Senators RARELY win - this cycle we're gonna get a senator so having a Governor as a running mate would be beneficial (i bet both will have a governor as a running mate)

All comes down to experience… McCain has years of experience… and as Hillary put it "Obama has that speech he made. . ."

energy   August 11th, 2008 9:21 am ET

Tom Ridge will be a good fit, if Obama strikes with Hillary Clinton. However, in event Obama goes with a different candidate, McCain should consider a strong woman to toy with Hillary Clinton's die-hard supporters, who will naturally vote against Obama, if she is not on the ticket. There are some good republican women to do the magic, especially Carly Fiorina. She is white female, married to a Hispanic, and has top corporate credentials. She can get about 10% additional female votes, and 5% additional Hispanic votes. Those numbers can translate to 2-3 percentage points nationwide. Overall, he should not choose until Barack chooses. I wish both of them luck. May God allow the best candidate to win.

McCain has not been full of vigor for years. They can show a 5 or 10 minute clip of him that way, but truth is, he's an old worn out Bush Jr.

He will have us in war with Iran. I CAN'T vote for him.

He did the same thing many years ago to Carol (crippled) that Edwards did to Elizabeth (cancer) - difference is, McCain went thru with divorce to marry the woman whose money LAUNCHED his political career. He hasn't changed, just sneakier.

Romney and Ridge both have a lot that has been hidden by the Republican Machine. I want all that to come out.

Obama '08

PA-Danielle   August 11th, 2008 9:17 am ET

Ridge is not as well liked outside his little PA circle as many would like to believe. Adding him to the ticket and the democrats get to link the disaster that was FEMA's response to Katrina to McCain. Brown and Chertoff may have taken the fall for it, but it was Ridge who sat in that chair the longest and never corrected the sinking ship. He did, however, add some snazzy color coding system to terror that is often questioned to be used for political gain.

jfs Memhis, Tn   August 11th, 2008 9:16 am ET

I think McCain can use a youngster like Ridge on his ticket. There's no connectopn to the Bush Whitehouse there …..hug . MCCain needs to out Rob paul on the Ticket……there's a move that NO One would expect. If they wantto win in Nov. they have to sever all Bush ties.

McCain = Campaigner in Name Only   August 11th, 2008 9:15 am ET

Those that are not even close to McCain can see his weaknesses and inability to serve as President of the US. Any competent person considered for McCain's VP would recognize the set up for disaster going on there. Interesting that Ridge just took the McCain hat & didn't put it on.

Erik from ERIE   August 11th, 2008 9:13 am ET

Tom Ridge should be able to help McCain remember if nothing else. Ridge is the person who dreamed up the the warning colors so maybe he can design a system to alert McCain when it's nap time and when it's time to eat and then when it's time for a gas tax holiday.

M.O. Yousuf   August 11th, 2008 8:55 am ET

I would respectfully suggest that Mc Caine drops the idea of becoming President simply because he is too old and has skin and other health problems; a matter which, if elected, will not help him withstand the various pressures and challenges of internal as well as foreign policies, especially as the United States is experiencing a lot of economic difficulties. Inspite of all these internal problems, Mc Caine will not hesitate a moment to declare more wars, in addition to prolonging the current Iraq war until the last moment of his breath. He is a war monger as he possesses a lust for bloodshed. If I were an American I would vote for Obama, who is characterized with charisma, sound judgment, wisdom and vision. Obviously some Americans find difficulty in discerning between the two candidates: who is right and who is wrong – whose is honest and truthful; and who is lying and deceiving the people.

Robert, the McSame thing is getting old, and it's childish. So is the thing where people put Obama's middle name in all caps. Let's talk more maturely here. Ridge is Pro-choice, and McCain, who needs to rally the party's base, won't pick someone who is pro-choice, since the majority of the party is pro-life. I'm from Pennsylvania, and I don't even think Ridge is that popular here. Neither is our current governor, Ed Rendell. He's even worse.

If you make $0 to $20,000 you will save:
$567 under Obama
$19 under McCain

If you make $20,000 to $38,000 (about 40% of American households make less than $38,000) you will save
$892 under Obama
$113 under McCain

If you make $38,000 to $66,000 (note the median household income is $46,000 as of 2007, more than 2-thirds of Americans make less than $66,000), you, along with the vast majority of Americans will save,
$1,042 under Obama
$319 under McCain

If you make $66,000 to $112,000, along with about 87% of Americans who make less than $110,000, you will save
$1,290 under Obama
$1,009 under McCain

If you make $112,000 to $161,000 you will save
$2,204 under Obama
$2,614 under McCain

If make $161,000 to $227,000, putting you in at least the top ca. 6-7% of American households), you will save
$2,780 under Obama
$4,380 under McCain

If are at least among the top 2.5% and make between $227,000 to $603,000 you will pay $19 more under Obama and save $7,781 under McCain

If you are among the 1%, but not 0.1%, i.e. semi-rich (I usually use $1,000,000 per year as the cut-off for what I call "rich"), making $603,000 and $2,900,000 , you will pay $115,974 more under Obama and $45,361 under McCain

Finally, if you are super-rich, making $2,900,000 or more (only about 0.2%-0.1% of Americans do), you will pay $701,885 more under Obama and save $269, 364 under McCain (note that many in this group make far more than $2.9 million - the Fortune 400, for example, had an average income of $214 million in 2007)

Simply put, unless you are among the bottom 99.2%, you will pay less taxes, less so under Obama if you make less than $112,000 and about as much as under McCain if you are in the bottom 94% and make less than $161,000. If you make more than $603,000 you will pay more under Obama, but perhaps you have a concience and favor poverty relief, universal health care and a good education for everyone, and are thus willing to see the Bush tax cuts expire.
