Obama's VP choice will be announced via text messaging.
Obama's VP choice will be announced via text messaging.

(CNN) — It used to be that a presidential candidate announced his running mate at a carefully staged rally in a crucial swing state designed to boost buzz for the ticket and maximize media coverage.

But in a presidential cycle where so many of the conventional rules no longer appear applicable, Barack Obama's campaign said Sunday the Democratic VP choice will be revealed via e-mail and text messages to supporters.

"Barack Obama is about to make one of the most important decisions of this campaign — choosing a running mate," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in an e-mail to supporters Sunday night. "You have helped build this movement from the bottom up, and Barack wants you to be the first to know his choice."

Plouffe's e-mail is sure to raise speculation a running mate announcement could be imminent, even as Obama vacations in Hawaii and the Olympic Games reach full swing in Beijing. Most political observers had expected Illinois senator to announce his VP choice after the Olympics, ended in the small window before the Democratic convention.

You ridiculous kids. If you are so great with technology, you would already know you can email the President at any time.If you think the emails go directly to the President, you had better start using your head for something other than a hat rack. As for using google earth to find out what is going on around the world (such as Georgia, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.), the government only allows you to see what they want you to see. Don't you think the terrorists would be using google earth to see troop movements, strategies, etc. if it could do what you think? My GOD, the younger generation is so darn stupid. Is this the so-called intelligence of the educated Obama supporter? GOD help us!

I was a little reluctant when I found out about the text announcement on facebook, but now thanks to the comments I'm definitely signing up! Obama's supporters should be the first to know about his choice–it shows where his priorities are. It's a really cool idea and shows that we have could have a president who puts his money where his mouth is when it comes to technology.

As to the older people or those suffering from the digital divide–I'm sure plenty of media reporters will be receiving the text, and will alert the America mainstream accordingly to Obama's choice!

AMW   August 11th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Joe, VT   August 11th, 2008 10:35 am ET

Only 12.8% of the American population is over 65, Tom. A lot of those not only have computers but have e-mail. McCain's in another era.

McCain is using morse code to announce his pick.

And to all the trolls, he will be making an official announcement, this is just to inform his supporters at the same time the decision is leaked to the press. Why should the media be the first to know? It's called being engaged with the American people. Some of us like to know what's going on.

Thus his plan is not a sign of immaturity, but a sign of savvy and strategy.

What has Sen. Obama done in his life? He was editor of the Harvard Law Review, voted "present" the most in the Illinois State Senate, and won the U.S. Senate seat as a result of scandals committed by the other candidates. This man is running for President of the United States! Who cares if he (his campaign) is texting his choice? It can't make up for his lack of experience.

Robert   August 11th, 2008 10:32 am ET

That just means McCain won't find out for 100 years. He still doesn't know how to work a computer or as he calls it (WONDER BOX)

Actually, this sounds like Obama's way of showing he is technologically savvy and able to maneuver in the 21st Century….as opposed to the old man who can't even log on to "watch the internets".

When so many of the problems we face will be solved only through the use of new and developing technology, Obama showing he is technologically literate and appreciative of the power of the internet is a plus in my book. Technophobes like McCain will be at least three steps behind in grasping the possibilities to solve energy and other problems, and we don't have time for dinosaurs to play catch up.

CNN = Jerry Springer of news   August 11th, 2008 10:10 am ET

Well, this is interesting on two points. One, McCain does not use technology such as email, blackberry, etc, and using this method of notification accentuates that fact. Two, it is going to get a lot more people to sign up for his listserve emails, which means they will be getting a lot of other relevant information about Obama (as well as solicitations for contributions). Very interesting choice. This is another one of many reasons I am excited about Obama's presidential campaign - always one step ahead of everyone else.

I want to make one more comment about this. I complained that the two candidates were being too soft, but I must give Obama credit for one thing: He uses the Internet!

This whole idea of giving me the scoop by email or text message makes me think that Obama will be a very "accessible" President of the United States, meaning, he will probably read my emails if I have a concern or a complaint.

I don't think I can say the same for McCain.

Once again, his campaign makes another big mistake. The youth and inexperience factor is shining through. By doing a hot dog move like this one, he's going to lose those critical votes he will need in November.
Let me guess, the bright one who figured this one out was the same idiot who put an all too familiar Presidential Seal behind him during a speech.
Obama, here's a piece of advice for you: hire less marketing wannabes and more with actual political campaign experience. Idiot!

Did he send a text to Putin this weekend also???

This shows Sen. Obama's readiness for issues facing the world in this century as opposed to Sen. Mcain, who seems better ready for issues from the last two century.
I had doubts before, but now I'm all for Obama!!!

I have signed up I think that is a brilliant idea, those that don't agree with what he's doing are McCain supporters and they are really too old to understand e-mail and computers like him nor do they want change so they might as well get use to it, It's a new sheriff in town.

I think Obama goes out of his way to exclude and downplay the importance of older voters. What am I saying, someone who can walk on water doesn't need the largest most reliable voting block to come out for him.

INDEPENDENT NYC   August 11th, 2008 10:01 am ET

I will like having a President that is current with electronic trends and understands that the world information forum has changed. He and his staff obviously understand this evolution. McCain's has never sent an email once in his very long life; if he doesn't understand the emergence of a new electronic communication age how does he intend to respond to a blackberry emergency????

I think people really need to look into obama's campaign committee and find out who's pulling his strings (besides moveon.org) and where the money is really coming from. This country is being set up big time. obama is very dangerous. I don't trust him at all.

Nick   August 11th, 2008 9:57 am ET

If these comments, dripping age and gender discrimination, from Obama supporters are any indication of the candidate himself then the U.S. is in serious trouble should Obama be elected. Discrimination, race, age or gender, has no place in any election yet the Obama campaign supports and promotes all three.

BARACK OBAMA AN AMERICAN PRODUCT?

According to the Federal Trade Commission, a "MADE IN U.S.A." product specifies that "All, or, Virtually All" the product has been made in the U.S.A. That is, all significant parts, processing and labour that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. Products should not contain any, or only negligible, foreign content. Does having a U.S. mother and a non-U.S. citizen father not render Senator Obama a fifty-percent natural born U.S. product?

Let's be respectful of John McCain's age in these bloggs.

That doesn't mean it can not be discussed in a relevant way but let's not turn off those older Americans that agree that Barack is the better choice for America in the 21st century.

We can be sure that, by Barack Obama simply being himself [playing b-ball and using current technology ... like texting supporters on important decisions like this] the distinctions between he and McCain will be clear. McCain's best days are behind him.

Now McCain may copy this just like he's copied other things Obama has done, [like positions he has taken in Iraq and Afghanistan] , but the American public won't view John as genuine if he does.

Joe in NJ   August 11th, 2008 9:54 am ET

I would be very careful who you call stupid especially when you do not even spell the word correctly. You might consider investing in a spellchecker program or a dictionary. If you are going to call the American people stupid you need to at least show you have some intelligence and misspelling a simple word like "stupid" doesn't exactly so intelligence much past the second grade.

Sorry but I spend a lot of money on my education and I take great exception to someone calling me stupid. Especially when they cannot even spell the word correctly or give me any basis in fact for their accusation.

I would be ashamed if Hillary accepted any part of this hollow ticket, beside a hollow man..

Independent-Latina-for-OBAMA   August 11th, 2008 9:52 am ET

HONESTLY………. "HELLO SAYS THE MEDIA GAVE HIM HIS PRESIDANCY (LEARN TO SPELL 'HELLO') BY KEEPING JOHN EDWARDS RUNNING……." ARE YOU NUTS?

The media DID NOT 'give' Sen. Obama the presidency! ORDINARY PEOPLE LIKE MY HUSBAND, OUR FRIENDS, FAMILY, MANY NEIGHBORS……. ETC.,……….. WE VOTED FOR SEN. OBAMA BECAUSE WE WANT CHANGE!

We do not want politics as usual! The politics of the GOP AND McCain! The fear-hate-divisive politics, that have torn our nation apart.

We do not want the politics that ALLOWS BUSH/CHENEY/MCCAIN TO INVADE THE SOVEREIGN NATION OF IRAQ (THEY NEVER ATTACKED US!)…………. AND we don't have the right to say ONE thing to Russia as it attacks Georgia!

We don't want a continuation of WAR! McCain told us very clearly who he is when he 'sang'………"BOMB……….BOMB……….BOMB IRAN"

We don't want our nation to continue to slip into greater DEBT, THE NATIONAL DEBT HAS DOUBLED DURING THE GOP/BUSH/CHENEY TENURE TO………$10 TRILLION!

We don't want to continue to be imprisoned by BIG OIL……..BUT NEED A LEADER WHO WILL INSPIRE AND DIRECT OUR NATION INTO A FUTURE WITHOUT FOREIGN OIL.

We do not want the failed policies of the Bush/Cheney/McCain years! McCain has been in Congress for 26 years……… and NOT much has changed. We are still in BED WITH BIG OIL. ASK YOURSELVES WHY IS WE NEED OIL…… BIG OIL IS NOT DRILLING ON ITS OVER A MILLION ACRES??????????

I could go on, but I hope that this answers you "Hello"…… you need to do some reading up on what each of the candidates stand for.

And with ALL the EXPERIENCE MCCAIN HAS, HE BELIEVED THE LIES OF BUSH/CHENEY TO GO TO WAR IN IRAQ…….. A WAR THAT HAS COST US BILLIONS ($1.38 A DAY!) AND ……..COST US THE PRECIOUS LIVES OF OUR YOUNG SOLDIERS! I SAY NO………NO!
TO MORE OF THE SAME WITH MCCAIN!

i agree with all of you who have the wisdom and common sence to see that obama is playing to the youth of the nation and to no one else. it shows that he is still too young and too inexperienced to take this job seriously. he knows that he can fool the children but he cant fool the adults. life is agme to many of our youth today. im betting that the more experienced citizens takje the youth to task by voting for mccain. we need to remind the youth that they dont have what it takes to survive in this world, that knowledge comes with age and eventual experience.

Good point ME. Your right. With the technology we have today, and the technology we are facing in the future, Obama will understand the concept of such technology that is needed to improve and change the way things are done now.

As for McCain, how will he have any impact on our future by using new technology if he has no knowledge of what we have today. The computer for example. McCain doesn't know how to use a computer. If he can't understand something as simple as using a computer, how is McCain going to face the bigger challenges of new technologies?

Is this serious? Text messaging/emailing an important decision like this is, for lack of a better word, stupid! If elected, will he send his State of the Union speeches via text messaging/email. In my opinion, this is simply pandering to what one author calls "the dumbest generation"

To be taken seriously as a presidential candidate, perhaps Obama should begin acting like one.

Another point — I agree with the poster who inferred the Clintons are up to no good. I agree. Obama should be afraid, very afraid, of the Clintons.

His why to save us and the earth is tax us to death. Remember anything that's implemented will be paid for by the people who pay taxes. Taxing big oil is a joke, big oil will raise prices and cut production if he does. By the way why is he going after big oil who paid ninty billion in taxes in the past year which is more than the next 30 largest corporations combined? Obama-Junkie, IL   August 11th, 2008 9:46 am ET

Very interesting and smart…Obama is definitely breaking the old rules of how presidential campaigns are run.

Obama and his campaign realize the power of the Internet and information technology age in this presidential campaign far more than any presidential candidate in history.

The response will be first to us Obama-supporters and then the mainstream media will jump into a frenzy to report the VP selection results. Obama will have the blogosphere at full attention followed by the mainstream media.

Obama in 08!

Actually Obama has the RIGHT experience. You clearly don't understand the way the world is changing. His embracing of new ways to reach more people and not relying on traditional, out dated, MSM methods, shows his willingness to take educated risks to help foment change. Exactly the opposite of the last 8 years.

Its amazing how people are spinning this as negative. You're on a board posting comments, and then you chastize a candidate for using new media CORRECTLY.

I'm tickled pink that Obama is using the latest technology, even tho I'm not savy! He's providing us with REAL CHANGE in many ways. That's what we want. I sure hope he doesn't spoil it by having Hillary on that message or any other woman. We need a sure fire better half not anothger Cheney! Contrary to what is being said, he doesn't NEED Hilary. He needs someone who will be 100% with him, which I don't think she is.

Hill 08   August 11th, 2008 9:41 am ET

This is a very effective strategy, particularly appealing to those of the younger generation whose day-to-day operations are technologically driven. As an issues-driven voter, rather than a "party" voter, I believe this may add a nail in the coffin in regards to the age-gap this presidential election. Most Americans, as myself, want a president who will outlive his term in office!

The announcement should be made to his supporters first. The Presidential debates should only be held on C-Span. Any involvement of corp. news media is a bias slant against Obama. Brilliant. This is why Obama will win. Embraces technology and the future, not for its own sake, but with a secondary motivation: get more people signed up at his site, and then utilize them to get him elected.

Hes obeying a primary motivator of generating leads– give something, get something. He gives you early info, you sign up to help him. Smart marketing.

McCain will probably announce via telegraph.
