Obama to announce VP via text, e-mail

Obama's VP choice will be announced via text messaging.
Obama's VP choice will be announced via text messaging.

(CNN) - It used to be that a presidential candidate announced his running mate at a carefully staged rally in a crucial swing state designed to boost buzz for the ticket and maximize media coverage.

But in a presidential cycle where so many of the conventional rules no longer appear applicable, Barack Obama's campaign said Sunday the Democratic VP choice will be revealed via e-mail and text messages to supporters.

"Barack Obama is about to make one of the most important decisions of this campaign - choosing a running mate," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe wrote in an e-mail to supporters Sunday night. "You have helped build this movement from the bottom up, and Barack wants you to be the first to know his choice."

Plouffe's e-mail is sure to raise speculation a running mate announcement could be imminent, even as Obama vacations in Hawaii and the Olympic Games reach full swing in Beijing. Most political observers had expected Illinois senator to announce his VP choice after the Olympics, ended in the small window before the Democratic convention.

Uh, people, he said "text message AND EMAIL." Some of you think this is playing to young people only? Did you miss the part about "email"? My 73 year old grandmother has been on email for 10 years.

This is nothing but a publicity stunt to get people to sign up for his e-mails so that he can pretend his campaign has more support than it really does. I have ALWAYS voted Democrat in my life, but now I am re-thinking my options.

    Third try:

Oh, yes. I always choose a president on "coolness" and ability to text message.

After all, that is so important for the 3:00 AM call.

    Obama

Great strategedy! Everyday I hear from the media what you need to do or aren't doing. Everyday, you up the annie on them. Its time for folkes to realize that some qualities are innate, and nothing can shut down hope and a leader that has shown so far that he can deliver change.
I believe this country can and will do better under the leadership of OBAma

My question still remains, what does Mccaine need to do besides come up with juvenile ads that focus on people who weren't going to vote for barack anyway. When is Mccaine going to talk about issues.

It's funny that people actually wants Obama to win and have no idea of his policies. That's the American people at its best!!!

Montana, Oregon, North Carolina, Alaska ... These are the same states that voted for Bush. Should we really trust their judgement?

Obama is going to text his VP choice to his followers. Sounds right, since Obama get's his experience from YouTube and his policy from Google.

John from New York: If you honestly believe that if Obama becomes president and you send him an email he will "be accessable" and read it you are fooling yourself. A low, low, low level staffer may read it and send a "response" but whoever ends up President will be too busy running the nation to sit down and read and respond to email from evetone who sends one. Get a clue.

Oh, brother! What an arrogant fool. He wants to get more people to sign on to his campaign website so he can claim more 'supporters' not understanding many of them will be non-supporters wanting to know who the rock star chooses as his back-up singer. This guy is a joke. If you won't drink the kool-aid, you will visit my website.

is this a feeble attempt at showing his superiority in using technology or is it just that announcing a VP in person to pay that person proper respect is just not that important to Mr. hollywood. after all it is much more important to have the media announce that Michelle will be making a speech at the convention wouldn't want to share her thunder would we.so what is the message here as sen. obama become that aloof that his subordinates are reduced to text. and we the voters are reduced to what

Actually, this sounds like Obama's way of showing he is technologically savvy and able to maneuver in the 21st Century....as opposed to the old man who can't even log on to "watch the internets".

When so many of the problems we face will be solved only through the use of new and developing technology, Obama showing he is technologically literate and appreciative of the power of the internet is a plus in my book. Technophobes like McCain will be at least three steps behind in grasping the possibilities to solve energy and other problems, and we don't have time for dinosaurs to play catch up.
