DeMint, Hensarling launch 'energy freedom' countdown Web site

Two Republicans in Congress launched this Web site Tuesday.

Two Republicans in Congress launched this Web site Tuesday.

(CNN) – As House Republicans continue to focus on energy policy, Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina and Rep. Jeb Hensarling of Texas launched a new Web site Tuesday that highlights October 1 as the day the congressional ban on offshore oil drilling will end unless Congress takes some action to continue the ban.

The site prominently features a YouTube video clip of DeMint and Hensarling discussing energy policy and encouraging the public to contact their representatives in Congress about lifting ban on offshore oil drilling and oil shale recovery. The site also contains a clock-like widget counting down the time until October 1. Visitors to the site can copy the HTML code for the widget so that they can embed the countdown clock on their own blogs or Web sites. Visitors can also sign an online petition on the site and read a blog about energy policy.

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, also recently launched a Facebook application that allows users to add a gas-pump-shaped October 1 countdown clock to their profiles on the popular social networking site.

These online developments come on the heels of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s announcement Monday on Larry King Live that she would be open to holding a vote on offshore drilling if it were part of a larger energy package. Pelosi’s change in position echoes a similar change in position by Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. Since August 1, House Republicans have been staging a protest against Pelosi’s refusal to hold a vote on an energy bill before Congress’ five-week recess began.

You need to make a website about drilling on the land you currently have leases to. 70 plus million acres and not a drill on a single piece of them.

Why give you more if you can't make even handle what you already have. Pathetic losers to deny that this is nothing but a ploy to give ALL of our lands to the oil companies, just so they can continue to sit idly on their hands doing nothing but pumping us for all our money.

Get your oil rigs our of our pockets, drilling us for all our money, and into the ground that you already have leases on, you sleaze balls.

I want to hear more about McCains $520 loafers. How many pairs does he own?

I want to hear more about how many 4-star meals McWarmonger and Botox Barbie have had. Or can they not afford to look elitist from one of their 8 homes or their private jet?

I want to hear more about McCain mispronouncing everyone's name and declaring all of us citizens of Georgia (the country – he certainly isn't my president and will never speak for me).

How much more can CNN cover up his gaffes? Is this a relay between FAUX Noise and CNN to see which can push harder to get McCain crowned King to take King W's place?

    I want to know.

If I hear this Republicans pushing for energy policy one more time I am going to scream. These are the people who have been in Washington for ages or at least in control of Congress and House for the last 7years. All of a sudden they remebered what they knew all along because they are running for re-election. Can someone please gag these people. I am upto my neck with these people. They had two oil big guns in the white house and they have benefited in every way from this oil hike and now you want to reward them again? What do we get as members of the public? Nothing but price hike. Can some please give me a break.

The time for "Energy Freedom" was in the late 1970's, when President Jimmy Carter tried to put the country on a path that moved away from oil and the Middle East. Jimmy Carter promoted solar power, even putting a solar collector on the White House. Then Ronald Reagan came along, telling us that we could stick our head in the sand and pretend nothing is wrong. The solar collector came down, and we began the long slow march of U.S. dollars to Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Sorry, DeMint and Hensarling, but in the words of your fearless leader, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me, fool me... won't get fooled again!"

Nancy Pelosi has been playing political games with important issues since she became Speaker of the House.

She has abused the trust of the American people, who voted Democrats into the majority in 2006.

She has failed us all and, when we're done securing the electoral humiliation of Barack Obama in November, she will be one of the first to go.

pelosi also advised dems who are up for re-election to say they were for off shore drilling to fool the voters into supporting them. if they get re-elected they will again refuse to do what the people they work for demand. just say no - no obama, no pelosi, no lying dems. drill now.

Jack, Why do Republicans want to drill so suddenly? The have been the majority untill 2006 and why do they want to drill now? It is so disheartning that Americans are suffering and the oil companies and making record profits.
And by the way, the House Speaker said "she would be open to holding a vote on offshore drilling if it were part of a larger energy package"
The is a difference between WOULD and WILL and most reporters always confuse us by saying that Nancy Pelosi has changed her mind on the drilling. Understand the ENGLISH before publishing. CNN is the worse offender.

I dont want off shore drilling, but then I am not an uneducated moron, and I am also not being paid much by any of the big oil companies. Like our government, my support can be bought. Just give me a number.

That's great, but offshore drilling isn't going to help. It won't help in the short-term, and it's not enough oil to make a long-term difference.

Why aren't BOTH parties discussing some REAL solutions?

So are they going to start a countdown of days until the environment is even more destroyed when these areas are drilled?

Or is there going to be a countdown to when oil companies actually start drilling the areas they are allowed to drill?

Good! We should be doing EVERYTHING within our power to address our dependence on foreign energy sources. Drilling offshore, using the reserves, exploring new energy sources that are more friendly to the environment.

If we as a country get serious about this, the price of oil will fall due to decreased speculation on the future price of oil. We need to throw everything we have at this problem. Also, we need to forget whether we're Democrats or Republicans – just when discussing this issue 🙂
