Look, there's only ONE WAY to stop an addiction: You have to stop taking the drug.

There's only one way to stop America's addiction to oil. And drilling for more is not it.

T. Boone Pickens has offered up a true alternative solution. We are blessed with huge reserves of natural gas. Presently, we burn much of it in power plants to make electricity. Instead, we should start switching our cars over to burn natural gas. This has been technologically possible for decades!

Then we should start building wind and solar power plants to phase out the coal and natural gas burning power plants.

We could cut our foreign oil dependency in half in ten years!

WAKE UP, AMERICA!

A vote for McCain is a vote for continued oil addiction.

VOTE BARAK OBAMA FOR CHANGE!

If the Dem's vote to extend this ban Obama is toast. On the other hand I do believe it should include some alternative energy pieces.

What a surprise. Big Oil expects the government that it's bought and paid for over the last eight years.

Yo, Obama is wrong in his numbers.

It isnt a few cents in ten years. Its 20 percent immediately. Or did you forget the huge drop oil prices just took when the executive ban was lifted?

Are you really that blinded by what your candidate says as versus facts right in front of your face?

These guys are doing what 80% of Americans want, whereas the Wicked Witch of the West, Nancy Pelosi wants to hold American hostage to high gas prices and wants us to conserve while she flies around the country in a <b>PRIVATE</b> jet burning fuel and adding to the GLOBAL WARMING that she claims to oppose.

Pelosi's motto <b>"Do as I SAY, not as I DO"</b>

DeMint and his republicans friends would give the deed to the country to the oil companies that own them lock stock and barrel if they thought for one minute they could get it done.
The oil companies own the republican party and 90 percent of the republicans in the party.
If you do not believe that then why do not they ask the oil companies to drill on the 68,000 million acres they already have leases on and 10,000 of those acres are in Alaska.

Idiots!
Which uneducated Americans actually think offshore drilling is the answer? Do they not realize that there are roughly 600 MILLION, yes MILLION, acres in the sea that they can already drill on that have not even been touched. Why, when they have 600 million acres available, are they wanting more? Because the oil companies know that after they open this up, they will own the offshore ocean, and that will lead to more money in their pockets. Why does no one else see this?

That bill does not have all the energy alternative and things that are needed to help with oil independence. It just has that oil ban lifting. That alone will do nothing to help. Republicians are trying to spin this recess in Congress into their own politicial gain. Don't fall for it. It's pandering at it's finest.

If the Republicans are serious about energy they will work with the Democrats to make a comprehensive bill. Let's hope. But don't hold your breath people because there is a lot less money for Big Oil if we were to have a sound comprehensive plan. Don't be fooled by the Republicans who so far only want a Drill Bill. I say NO WAY.

ALSO PEOPLE VOTE ONLY DEMOCRAT THIS TIME AND YES WE CAN OBAMA.

ENERGY FREEDOM WILL BE THE DAY WE DO NOT HAVE TO RELY ON OIL FOR ENERGY!

But if we want real energy freedom, we will never get it by voting republican.

We need to turn the page and start moving America in the right direction on energy and all other issues.

And that starts by voting for OBAMA in November.

The old ways die hard don't they......
if the price of oil stays down, watch everyone run out and get another SUV.

It's time to move forward, come up with a prudent plan but know that coming off oil has to be at the top of the plan.

If Pelosi is smart and has the gonads she'll jerk these grand standing repugs around until they are dizzy with Parlimentary procedures until Obama gets in the WH so he can include some form of reasonable off shore drilling concepts in a more comprehensive energy independence policy.
Political compromises aren't "changes of position." If the dems have to agree to a little bit of entirely pointless drilling in exchange for, say, a few billion dollars of development money for clean and renewable energy, go for it. Did I mention that drilling is nonetheless entirely pointless, as the government's own energy website suggests?

Just amazing to me how, when the republicans had the majority and a lazy, compliant President, off shore drilling was never brought up as an issue. But now that the republicans need an issue to divide and manipulate ignorant voters at election time, off shore drilling is the most important priority of the ages.

And Pelosi changing her position after Obama flip-flopped is what is scary. We just seen what 6 years of a rubber stamp congress did with a Bush presidency. A Democrat president and a Democrat rubber stamp congress will be jusy as bad. Either way it is unbridled power. That is not what this country needs. A Democratic congress certainly won't keep Obama in check, they are too afraid of a black backlash. Our only hope is stopping Obama.

God what a ridiculous stunt.

What's more ridiculous is that over half of America is falling for it.

Drilling offshore lines pockets, not gas tanks. By the time this "gold mine" is opened...there'll be two customers on the block with MORE demand than we have...(India and China). That means we'll be third in line for any preferential treatment, folks.

Someone care to explain to me how WE'RE going to save a thin dime if our revenues and supplies AREN"T nationalized?

Truly. What a bunch of idiots. Only the ignorant and absolutely non-cerebral will not be insulted by this infantile display of laughable politics. Drilling offshore will not produce enough oil to make a dent in our dependence on oil imports. There are things we could do that would make a difference but I don't hear these boys even hinting at them. One has to wonder why drilling offshore is sooooo darn important and nothing else is worth talking about. We produce 41% of the oil we use now. Increased efficiency in the use of the resource and shifting to alternatives is the most immediate way to reduce or eliminate our dependence on oil imports. So the question that come to mind again is "Do they just want to drill offshore or do they want to become energy independent?" Now don't get me wrong. I'm not necessarily opposed to drilling but I just see ways to become more energy independent more quickly. So what's the goal here?

Jim DeMint is the king of the poison pill. He is a thoughtless obstructionist posing as a conservative. He hates America. He hates freedom. And sadly, he is the poster child of the the majority of so called conservative republicans, not only in the senate but the house too --the whole party-- all the way to the Nazi Bush.

He and his kind need to be beaten up and banished from American politics once and for all. For ever. Fascist lunatics.

this is as repulsive and short sighted as most everything the republicans have done for eight years. it should be a count down clock to their going away party. is there some magic drill they have in their possession that will immediately bring the gas to the pump? if they have THAT they should have used it long ago.

The site should be called COUNTDOWN TO THE TRIUMPH OF IDIOCY DAY

"If you still believe offshore oil drilling will reduce gasoline prices and set America on the road to energy independence, you've been badly bamboozled.

Even the politicians and pundits espousing the plan don't believe it will do anything of the sort.

They're counting on the fact that you don't understand the oil market and can be suckered into mistaking slogans for solutions to the very complex energy problem."

Coastal states will never allow off-shore drilling, Arnold already flat-out opposes any attempt to drill off CA. It's easy for people who live away from the coast to want drilling, but if it was in their backyard i'm sure they would feel differently.

Funny how these Repubs who claim to love America so much are so ready to destroy it's nature and wildlife just so they can sound tough.

That's too general, we don;t know who you're talking about. Even though you're from NY, I wouldn't presume to guess.

I've heard all the Dem's excuses for not drilling, and they all fail miserably. Especially the "it wouldn't have an effect for five years." The threat has ALREADY had an effect, or haven't you been watching the price of oil lately? Besides, if you'd started SEVEN years ago, when we told you to, we'd be at minus-2.

"Windfall profits" tax? Yeah, like we'd EVER see that money back in our own pockets. No thanks. Russia and Mexico tried that plan. It worked good until the cost of getting oil out of the ground went up. Now, it's failing, their production is plunging, - one of the reasons oil is expensive, declining production - and they're repealing those taxes. Intentionally advocating a failed plan... there's a word for that, and it ends with "tupid."

There's no one solution, and BOTH the D-s and R-s need to wake up and realize that. It's going to be a combination of efforts - drilling to decrease the price while we conserve, increase efficiency, and find new and better sources of power. (Hint, there's a HUGE, safe, non-polluting fusion reactor in the sky! And it's never dark in orbit!)

I notice there is no link to the Countdown Website but only links to Democrats activities. What irresponsibly biased news reporting. CNN, your reputation for balance continues to slide. I'm not a devotee to either party, but in this case shame on elected officials and their constituents standing in the way of American independence by blocking off-shore drilling and securing our dependence on the Middle-East. New technologies in drilling make this a safe alternative for the present time and all off-shore drilling sites are so far out to sea they aren't even visible from US shorelines. Democrats won't have to worry about they're coastal property values going down.
