We know very well what Putin has done to Russia:

Killed the free press, imprisoned or murdered the opposition and consolidated his "party" (read: old KGB + media & commodity control = fascism) power into a functioning dictatorship.

That's a lot different from the US. The free press here has killed itself by not doing its job by vetting Obama the way it would have vetted any other first year Senator who decided to run for POTUS.

The difference here is that the opposition is being imprisoned by the press and Obama supporters and surrogates with racism charges for anyone who disagrees with him.

And didn't Obama just take a jab at McCain for OPPOSING "commodity control"? Remember, McCain opposed governement mandated purchases?

McCain's response to Russia is very dangerous for the US and for the stability of International peace. Observing his response to this crises shows that he could easily escalate this to world War III, where as Sarkozy's and Obama's diplomatic response shows true leadership. Here's why:

1.McCain has not acknowledged the reports and eyewitness testimony that the Georgian army were shooting women and children.
2. Jumping to conclusions so fast with such strong rhetoric before the facts that are only now coming out shows a grave warning to what McCain would be like as president.
3. Calling for Russia to be removed from the G8 prior to all these events serves to only antagonize Russia (granted after their use of excessive force this maybe be a good idea). However, this only plays into the Russian's belief that the US is not a fair broker in international affairs.
4. McCain coming out with such strong anti-Russian rhetoric, his jokes at his town hall meetings, mispronouncing Mikheil Saakashvili's name and calling Putin president instead of prime minister all sends very bad signals to Russia and to the region.
5 McCain needs to bare in mind that Russia's support is required to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons and to stop it's influence in Iraq. McCain is burning bridges. A foreign policy blunder beyond belief.

Also: The headlines 'Obama moves to Mccain's stance on Russia' is very misleading. McCain started with a biased view on Russia and didn't wait for facts before starting the blame game. Obama on the other had showed a far better response, stating both sides had to refrain from use of force and then only when there was proof that Russia had over extended itself did he beef up the rhetoric.
This is what America needs in a president. A calm informed balanced response, not a biased two dimensional thinking war mongered.

What...and the US isn't interested in empire building...? Give me a break. Our leaders and the TV pundits who are suddenly international relations experts need to read some history books. Russia is not easily understood or judged. Russian history is highly complex, more so than the average American intellect can comprehend. Since 1918 their foreign policy has been dominated by fear of encirclement by the west (following two catastrophic invasions from the west). Look at how we are expanding NATO. Our goal is to encircle Russia and prevent Russian resurgance. They are working to prevent/undermine this strategy.

Why is it that the USA can march into any country it wants for any reason, such as to protect US citizens, as we did in Grenada, Panama, Serbia, Iraq, and that the USA can support and recognize separatist movements, such as in Kosovo, but we get so upset when any other country does the exact same thing? We are hypocrites and the rest of the world knows it, which is why we have less influence in the world and must rely on empty, saber rattling bluster from people like McCain who is impotent to doing anything about it.

See, I told you guys that McBrainless' attitude was not conducive to anything constructive. Instead of using prudence in an extremely delicate situation, this clowns looks to incite Russia. I don't know what he is expecting to accomplish with these remarks. In my opinion it further proves that he does not have the temperament to lead this nation.

McBrianless' saber rattling is not going to make Russia succumb to his imagined authority. What does he think Russia is going to do, pack up and leave so McIdiot won’t think they're trying to re-establish their lost empire? How utterly stupid. What kind of administration would McBrainless have? With nonsense like this coming out of his mouth, just exactly how effective does he think he'll be?

See, this buffoon has no idea how to lead on the world stage. All this posturing is only for the American electorate, that' s it. It shows how inept his administration will be. He doesn't even consider possible repercussions of statements like this. This, chuckles the clown, is definitely unfit to be President. Being president requires commonsense and a keen insight on how to deal with international problems, not waving a big stick and talking loud.

Besides, if Russia wanted to they could say the thing about us for invading a nation unjustifiably.

McBrainless is an absolute idiot, being advised by equally stupid people. Saber rattling is not the answer, McWizard.

Doesn't it bother anyone in the press or in politics that it was Georgia that fired the first shot and rolled in the first tanks, breaking a truce of over a decade? I'm by no means an apologist for Russia, but the lopsided and distorted coverage appears to be nothing more than an anti-Russian knee-jerk reaction. If we had held the British to the same level of responsibility in the Falklands, we'd have come down four-square for Argentina.

The best way to end an Empire is to get yourself in debt through wars; i.e., Rome and France.

I see McCain would like to see the U.S. follow the demise of those empires through his sabre rattling.

All this from a guy who could not remember that Putin was prime minister and not President anymore.

Perfect example of why McCain is not ready to be President and will never be. A vast majority of Russians back Putin, for many reasons, and the kind of talk offered by McCain only put fuel on problems instead of bringing something to the debate. It has nothing to do with being weak or strong. You do have to hold your ground while making sure, through diplomacy, to build a strong enough coalition to deter any ambition Putin might have. McCain does not understand that, nor does he have any real understanding of geopolitics. Not surprising considering he admits himself that he does not read. US can not afford 4 years with someone who does not know what he's doing.

Not sure if my previous post will get published so just wanted to add that Putin dealing with terrorism in his own backyard, whether linked to oil or not, is his business. Not ours. Certainly NOT McCains. Haven't we interfered enough with other countries? Forced democracy isn't in any way, shape or form, democracy. Putin is no threat to us, much as we would like him to be. Same with Sadam Hussein. He was also no threat to us, much as we would have liked him to be. Anybody getting a pattern here?

Many here shouting at Russia without knowing the facts. Georgia is a bordering nation and it cannot intimidate Russia with Israeli trained army or American supplied weapons.

Americans are dishonest and secretly supply GUNS to Georgia. American lap dog Isreal is also there! Why?

McCain can go and fight there instead of crying in USA. Bush barked that Georgia is a sovereign nation. Did these two idiots Bush and McCain know Iraq is also a sovereign nation?

NATO is not a democratic alliance but a military alliance. Russia is also a sovereign nation and it cannot allow American-Israeli backed criminals at her doors step!

American politicians or any American have no moral right to bark at Russia while they invaded Iraq for no reason and still killing people there. American medias now stopped counting the civilian deaths in Iraq. More than half million Iraqis already killed.

Only thing the Republicans have is to scare some of the American people about war because some of the American people think Mccain knows what he is talking about because he was a POW many, many years ago.
The "Russian Empire"??? McCain is out of his cotton-picking mind. What we need is someone like Obama who can see the world clearly and not through McCain's and the rest of the neocons' naive, child-like eyes. It's not all "good v. evil," McCain. He would make for a very dangerous president. I don't want this unstable old man anywhere near that red phone!

To those criticizing McCain; just what is he wrong about? So from now on calling out unnecessary aggression on a democracy is called fear mongering? So we should sit back and let Russia do whatever it wants to? You are siding with the aggressors. In your attempt to avoid war at all costs you let other countries commit whatever atrocities they want. Wake up, McCain is right. You all would sit quietly by why the world commits one act of genocide against its own people (Saddam in Iraq) to another (Russia in Georgia). Peace through strength.

Danger! Danger! Who wants a third world war?

What do republicans say about McCain?

Sen Thad Cochran of Mississippi said "The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine," Cochran said about McCain by phone. "He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

Sen Cochran has known the McCain family from the days when they lived in Mississippi and got to know McCain well in the 1970s when Cochran served in the US House and McCain served as a naval liaison in Congress

Young people think that Obama and good intentions can appease fashists and any KGB goverment . If you give them a finger, they will swallow your.

McCain-as-foreign-policy-authority is a myth, McCain has shown time and time again that, far from being an expert when it comes to foreign policy, he is frequently --- and dangerously -- clueless.

So every day between now and November 4th voters should be reminded that:
1. McCain has been among the most ardent supporters of the war in Iraq -- the most disastrous foreign policy decision in American history.
2. McCain falsely claims that, from the beginning of the war, he called on former Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld to resign. He should have, but he didn't.
3. McCain thinks it's "not too important" when American forces come home from Iraq.
4. McCain has repeatedly claimed that Iran was training members of al-Qaeda in Iraq, showing a fundamental misunderstanding of the key players in the war. He doesn't understand the difference between Shiites and Sunnis, and even after being corrected he still doesn't get it.
5. Need more proof of why McCain is not "ready to lead"? Do you want a president who thinks there is an "Iraq/Pakistan border"? Who believes Darfur is in Somalia? And that Czechoslovakia is still a country?

Senator McCain saw Putin's intentions years ago and no one would listen. Now it's happening. McCain isn't sending any troops. Get off the funny colored pills, Obama supporters. Through diplomatic and economic pressures the Russian's can be persuaded to look at things differently. We need Russia to help curb Iran's ambitions and Russia needs us economically. No one is going to bash one another over the head. However, the Russian's have eyes on again expanding their influence and we must help Western leaning nations like Georgia and the Ukraine get into NATO as quick as possible to ally themselves with Europe and the US among others.

I think the candidates need to stay out of this, neither one of them are the US PRESIDENT yet. This is President Bush decision to make suggestions to Russia. If that is the case, then any American person could tell the world what to do. What gives with these 2 candidates they are trying to be president already. Yes, there opinions do matter but make the suggestions to the US President. What is this world coming to?

But American imperialism is ok? We have military bases in over 100 countries around the world and want to put up missile defense shields in Europe, and we are the only country to have used nuclear weapons.

Quit trying to compare our wary in Iraq and what Russia is doing. We overthrow dictator and tried to build a democracy and help the people of Iraq. Russia is trying to overthrow an elected democracy and isn't trying to help the Georgian people. It's disgusting you'd even try to compare the two wars.

McCain is right all the way. The people who are criticizing him are the same people who don't care what happens to the rest of the world. The only care about the US, how selfish.

McCain seems to espouse too many antiquated ideas that have caused so many problems when approaching foreign policy from positions similar to the past eight years of the Bush administration. Dealing with Russia/Georgia in a constructive manner will require unified efforts through our relations with the European nations.

When comparing the two candidates, I honestly feel Obama offers the diplomatic appeal needed to strengthen these relations, as demonstrated by the warm reception Obama received from leaders when traveling abroad. His potential seemed reminiscent of Reagan's diplomatic achievements in this area. Obama '08

As usual, here comes good old John McSame with his fast draw...Act now, ask questions later (then forget the answers). He's so uninformed that he makes Bush look semi-intelligent - and that's pretty hard to do. Georgia's leader is nothing more than a gangster who pretends to love democracy & freedom. The Bush administration falls for that one hook, line & sinker because it suits their purposes. Georgia has oil. Everyone has gotten on the 'bash big bad Russia/Putin' bandwagon. Nothing about how Georgia has been terrorizing its own people and neighboring states. It would be so refreshing if just one branch of media actually reported facts instead of opinions based on partisan crap.

Come on CNN. Why do you continue to post comments that have nothing to do with the story? Could you at least provide some of these morons a spell checker. I know little kids can spell better than most of these morons that comment on here.

McCain is as stupid as he is ugly, and is clueless on foreign affairs. Does he really think that Putin will bow to his will just because he said what they did is bad. This is almost as pitiful as George Bush condemming Russian's actions. Putin doesn't listen to him either, and I'm sure he laughs everytime Bush opens his mouth. If McCain gets elected, Putin would laugh at him too, and probably yawn in his face.

Note to McStupid, it's not a good idea to ruffle the feathers of a Russian leader who was once the most powerful man in the KGB. Stupid, demonic Republicans--and that includes Bush and McCain supporters--they are the truly arrogant ones if they think anyone in the world will listen to them. When you look at polls of foreigners, 80 - 90% of them would rather sit down with Obama than these tired old stupid flatulating republicans.

What a suprise! More simple-minded posts from Obamites spouting the same old tired "Mc" isms and warmongering rants. Really, do any of you that post these try to gain any perspective on the subject by at least doing a Google search before you spout? I have come to the conclusion that many of these posts are automated and come from some server at Obama election headquarters.

For those that care, do a Google search with the following terms:
Putin KGB
Russia oil
Cold War peace through strength
