Ron Paul's wife was taken to the hospital Monday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Rep. Ron Paul's wife was hospitalized Monday at a Houston-area hospital, a spokesman for the Texas Republican confirms to CNN.

"Carol Paul has been taken ill and is currently in the Critical Care Unit at a Houston area hospital," Jesse Benton, Paul's spokesman, said in an email statement to CNN. "She has had several abdominal surgeries and remains in serious but stable condition. Dr. Paul appreciates the outpouring of concern and good wishes during this difficult time."

Benton did not name the hospital or provide further details about the hospitalization.

Paul unsuccessfully sought the 2008 Republican presidential nomination, developing a loyal following among people who support limited government as well as among anti-war activists. Paul was the only Republican presidential candidate who opposed the Iraq war.

Caroline, Kentucky   August 12th, 2008 11:13 am ET

Get well soon Mrs. Paul. Your husband is one of the few REAL conservatives left in Congress, and as a Democrat, I still deeply respect him and your family.

Texas Trail Dog!   August 12th, 2008 11:12 am ET

I hope you wife is better and I will pray for her. You are a good man with good intentions RON PAUL.

JD in Moraga, CA   August 12th, 2008 11:09 am ET

…funny, in that picture he kinda looks like Sir Ian McKellan…

Hannah, IL   August 12th, 2008 11:07 am ET

My prayers go out to Ron Paul and his family. He's a decent man, and I'm sure his wife is as well.

May God be with them at this time.

sick wife = party time   August 12th, 2008 11:06 am ET

Since Paul's wife is ill now, does that mean he can follow McCain and Edwards (and Clinton?) and cheat on his wife now too? Hmm…

Travis in Colorado   August 12th, 2008 11:01 am ET

Ron Paul, my families prayers and thoughts are with you and your wife at this time. We hope, pray and wish for a speedy, healthy recovery.

Matt   August 12th, 2008 10:54 am ET

It's a shame that the vile Obama supporters can't even put aside their illogical hatred to offer well wishes to a woman who has fallen ill.

Juvenile and obscene.

Mattness   August 12th, 2008 10:47 am ET

My thoughts and prayers are with you, Mrs. Paul and the Paul family. I'm also praying Ron Paul supporters will storm the Republican Convention and oust McSame! Then we can all vote for Ron Paul instead of the lesser of two evils.

Anyone but these 2   August 12th, 2008 10:46 am ET

Best wishes to Mrs. Paul. I hope she recovers quickly so that Ron can work towards a better America without distraction. He is probably the most clear-headed Republican out there.

ANGIE   August 12th, 2008 10:45 am ET

I am an obama supporter but my prayers are with your family, I like ron paul and i would have voted for him, Hope your wife is well soon!!!

INDEPENDENT NYC   August 12th, 2008 10:39 am ET

Ron Paul is a well intentioned man. He should leave the race to the dogs and tend to his wife. Hopefully a revamped healthcare system and economy will be in the future for all of America including he and his wife.

INSANE IN THE MCCAIN   August 12th, 2008 10:38 am ET

McCain Supporters,
He is not a maverick, but rather a flip-flopper.
Below are only a few position McSurge has changed positions on:
1. McCain opposed off-shore oil drilling; now he supports it
2. McCain strongly opposes a windfall-tax on oil company profits. Three weeks earlier, he was perfectly comfortable with the idea.
3. McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.
4. McCain defended “privatizing” Social Security. Now he says he’s against privatization (though he actually still supports it.)
5. McCain wanted to change the Republican Party platform to protect abortion rights in cases of rape and incest. Now he doesn’t.
6. McCain thought the estate tax was perfectly fair. Now he believes the opposite.
7. McCain pledged in February 2008 that he would not, under any circumstances, raise taxes. Specifically, McCain was asked if he is a “‘read my lips’ candidate, no new taxes, no matter what?” referring to George H.W. Bush’s 1988 pledge. “No new taxes,” McCain responded. Two weeks later, McCain said, “I’m not making a ‘read my lips’ statement, in that I will not raise taxes.”
8. In 2002 McCain said, it is OK for Bush to detain suspected enemy combatants in Guantanamo bay, without bringing any charge against them. In now (2007) he is against it, and even wants to closedown Guantanamo bay.
9. In 2006, McCain said he was the “greatest critic” of Rumsfeld’s failed Iraq policy.
In December 2003, McCain praised the same strategy as “a mission accomplished.” In March 2004, he said, “I’m confident we’re on the right course.” In December 2005, he said, “Overall, I think a year from now, we will have made a fair amount of progress if we stay the course.”
10. We can’t have a time-time for Iraq, and It’s OK to stay in Iraq for 100 years;
……….. 4 months later McCain appear agrees to an18-month time-table for a withdrawal
McCain is no straight-talker….so…If you support McCain…. could you tell him to rename his bus/plane….. the FLIP-FLOP EXPRESS ?
By keeping “straight talk express” on his bus & plane, McCain is insulting the intelligence of every American. Even a dummy, can easily tell McCain is the king of Flip-Floppers
……..FLIP-FLOP EXPRESS …. This is a better description of McCain, isn’t it ?

Angelina   August 12th, 2008 10:36 am ET

This guy should be President. Now HE would have changed things. He's conservative in all the right places AND he has a long history or changing things in Washington — totally unlike Obama who has no history whatsoever.

We are praying for you Dr. Paul and Family. You are a true American hero. You have spent tireless amounts of your time teaching the word of our founding fathers. You should be the next President and your wife should be the first lady. You received the most military campaign donations and that made you my Commander and Chief as well as a whole lot of other Americans. God bless! SInce we all have these kinds of traumas , we can hope these kinds of things will humanize ,and temper the rancor of politics, Paul certainly sounds more reasonable , kind and honest than most, can we transcend the conflicts in politics , or are they who we are? Maybe both, but intensions of good will towards somebody has been shown to have healing results on the body, so here is some.

It's a shame that this is the only new news we hear about Dr. Paul from the corporate media.

I am glad he is still out there, presenting wildly different views to the Republican base. Ignoring him and Kucinich during the primary debates was a grave mistake.

Best wishes to Mrs. Paul

I do hope that Ron Paul will be named as Bob Barr's VP. We might actually see a third party start to gain some traction. It would be a welcome relief from the two-party system we have now.
