Roberts is skipping his party's convention.

(CNN) – Another Senate Republican is officially skipping the party's national convention next month, the latest sign vulnerable Republicans may be wary of linking themselves to the GOP brand this election cycle.

Pat Roberts, the two-term senator from Kansas who finds himself in a closer re-election bid than initially expected, won't be on hand to see Sen. John McCain accept the Republican presidential nomination in Minneapolis, his spokesman Molly Haase confirmed to CNN.

Roberts will instead be completing a 105-county tour of the state, Haase said. Polls show Roberts holds a double digit lead over Democratic challenger Jim Slattery, though the race has narrowed over the last several weeks.

Roberts joins a handful of vulnerable Senate Republicans who have flatly said they will not attend the convention, including Susan Collins of Maine, Gordon Smith of Oregon, Ted Stevens of Alaska, and Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina.

Two other vulnerable Republicans — New Hampshire Sen. John Sununu and Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker — have yet to announce if they will attend.

Roberts' decision comes a week after Republican Congressional Committee Chair Tom Cole reportedly suggested some embattled Republicans should steer clear of the GOP Convention.

According to a report in The Hill, the Oklahoma congressman also urged Republican lawmakers to feel free to criticize the party -– including prospective future colleagues — citing dismal congressional approval ratings. “These ratings are worse than we had on the eve of losing the majority,” he said. “Don’t be afraid to say you are disappointed in fellow Republicans… don’t hesitate to be anti-Washington, D.C."

I am sad to say that the Dems aren't doing their jobs- have a rogue presidential candidate whose trademark is change and the reps are doing good stuff now

Stupid independents and young kids dethroned the Clintons- when we had PEACE AND PROSPERITY

St. Paul Supporter   August 13th, 2008 8:40 pm ET

The RNC convention is being held in St. Paul, not Minneapolis as falsely reported in this story. This is sloppy journalism.

Yinka   August 13th, 2008 8:25 pm ET

It is not at all surprising that Republicans are ditching senator McCain. Nearly a dozen of senator McCain's Republican colleagues in the Senate and the house have made it clear that they will not attend the convention, while some are still contemplating whether or not to stay away from the convention. All of this in an attempt to distance themselves from senator McCain. The question is: why should anyone vote for Mccain when his own party is avoiding him?

There is a lot of concerns about senator McCain`s appetite for war. I hope he does not excercibate the Goergia/Russia crisis with his so-called "tough talk". He believes that "nations don't invade nations", but he signed off on invading Iraq and he is encouraging invading Iran.

Interesting that we continue to see all these posts blaming Democrats in Congress for all of the things wrong in this country and projecting all kinds of blame on Obama for whatever is currently happening.

Yet, it's the Republicans who do not want to go to their convention, even though the RNC is trying to hide Bush and Cheney.

This is the year to take the country back from the elitists!

The GOP convention is NOT in Minneapolis you idiots. It is in FACT in St. Paul. Why can't you people get it straight? People thinking this is going to be some kind of landslide are at best delusional and at worst in need of serious therapy.

Hannah Stevens   August 13th, 2008 7:13 pm ET

I am with Think About the Future. This person aptly describes what it would be like to have McCain sitting in the White House. McCain is very pro war and would jump at the chance to start another one with Iran, Syria any country that looked at us sideways. He "my senator" from Arizona and leading up to the iraq war, I wrote letter after letter to him imploring him to go against the war, but he wrote back that he supported the Iraq war 100%. He is bad for America.

I don't understand people who can't see that the election is really not a hard choice at all. Why then would you vote a member of that party into government when their vested interest is to make government unworkable? Think about it will you!?

boered1   August 13th, 2008 6:33 pm ET

There is no landslide, there are too many of the radical right who would rather vote for a puppet than a black man, there are too many of the fanatical revisionist religious groups who have too much power to lose if a Democrat gets into office to allow such a thing to happen. Even now dobson and the rest of the political group over at focus on the family (why are they still tax exempt?) are planniing on putting measures on every state's ballots to get out the radical rights base (ie removal of gay rights, abortion, redefining the pill as abortion, homeschooling etc) who traditionally vote republican because they believe all democrats are athiest (over 50% of Americans are registered Democrat.. over 80% of Americans are members of mainstream religions.. but hey logic is not the radical rights strong point). So Obama will have a tough time this election, on the local scene however, the republicans know that the further they distance themselves from those in Congress now (or bush if they are in congress now) the better they will do, congress has a lower approval rating than bush so it is an easy target. I understand why the republicans are doing what they are doing but this will be a closer election than people think, the only good thing I can say is that at least the polarizing liar hillary is not running as a democrat this year so democrats have a chance at winning!

Nick   August 13th, 2008 6:32 pm ET

Jim in Indiana   August 13th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

Trust,
I admire Chuck Hagel a lot. But he is not on Obama's side other than on foreign policy. He would be a great Secretary of Defense. But not a good pick for VP. Also, just by picking him, Obama would NOT get Nebraska. Nebraska polls show McCain leading by a big margin.

That's not the case in Indiana. Obama and McCain are neck & neck in Indiana now, with conventional wisdom saying that it will go GOP, as normal. Unless Evan Bayh is on the ticket. He is popular here, he has a good record as a moderate Democrat. He could swing a lot of independents to Obama, not just in Indiana but elsewhere.

Joe Biden would be an ideal match for Obama. They stand almost together on all major issues. Biden has the foreign policy experience that so many would like on the ticket. He would bring no single state, as his state is Democratic anyway, but he would be a good VP, which is the important issue.

Peter of Oregon   August 13th, 2008 6:27 pm ET

I hope to see more Republican officials endorse Obama. In many respects his policies are more in keeping with conservative values than McCain.

Voice of Reason   August 13th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Electing Obama will be the greatests disaster in American politics!

Erika, KS   August 13th, 2008 6:26 pm ET

Too bad Obama was the favored chosen one. Too bad Clinton isn't the democratic nominee. Now THAT would have been a landslide!

Here we have people who slam McCain for his age, (I didn't think we believed in age discrimination, but never mind that) then we have Obama who, lets face facts, has a very limited resume in his 47 years.

Then there's Hillary Clinton. 60. Just about right. Kind of like Goldilocks really. Not too old, not too young. Just right. The DNC blew it. Kiss off Obama, you are TOO inexperienced. I won't be voting for Roberts either. I hope Mr. Slattery beats him up in a landslide.

Mark Webb   August 13th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Just one question: Is McCain attending????

Concerned Texan   August 13th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Does this mean that there will be some empty seats for the taking at the republican convention. That was one of the reasons that I intially changed partys because I could never get a seat at the convention because of the smaller venues and now they will have empty seats. Too late to change back now!

Sacto Joe   August 13th, 2008 6:22 pm ET

Per CNN, "Refineries were operating at 85.9% of capacity" and oil has risen in price as a result.

What the @#$%#ck! is THAT!!!?

We reduce demand, and our reward is that the refineries REDUCE CAPACITY, thus ultimately driving the price of gasoline higher? Where is the OUTRAGE against the oilmen running this country into the ground??!

And how in hades can anyone justify putting another REPUBLICAN in the office of President under the circumstances?

TonyinKentucky   August 13th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

Why this doesn't put the public on alert, I can't guess. The Republicans are in effect saying they have wrecked the country and all hands on deck should scatter to avoid the blow back and just hope they can hang on to enough power to keep running the nation into the ditch.

John Q. Public needs to heed the GOP's advise and stay away from them.

Franky   August 13th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

You know, even they gotta stick together. And as much as President Bush or Cheney might've not had an earlier role after it was announced they will attend, the matter of fact is that they are Republicans.

What are they gonna do?? Just sit there and wait for God??

Jason, Los Angeles   August 13th, 2008 6:13 pm ET

This all sounds like silent endorsements for Obama. McCain has no shot at the Oval Office. As soon as the debates kick off, and people start seeing Obama and McCain side by side on TV, people will flock to Barack in droves. Tom in MD   August 13th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

Great advice from Mr. Cole. After Republicans have pretty much unanimously rubber-stamped everything Bush wants and stood united against everything congressional Democrats have tried to do, they are now advised to go back to their constituents and say:

"Hey, I've been trying to do what's right all along and it's just all those OTHER Republicans who have been messing things up!"

It might make sense for one or two who really don't go along with the pack, but when every one of them is saying it then it's obvious most of them are lying.

It's funny until you realize that enough people will buy it to reelect many of them (or just don't think the economy and preventing World War 3 are as important as stopping gay marriage).

Anne E.   August 13th, 2008 6:05 pm ET

This is even funnier than Mrs. Senator McCain's owie (and I was thinking it was something serious, like a broken acrylic).
At any rate, another chicken bailing from the convention.
The GOP has given a whole new meaning to the term "CUT AND RUN." They're stuck with GW & Dick Cheney, there's nothing they can do about it, and I for one am ecstatic about it!!! Let's see those two save GOP incumbents' jobs come November….

What if? Just what if? (and there is enough information to consider the possibility) what if Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia really is a war criminal. What if (IF) russia just happens to be right and America won't even investigate!? what if Russia cannot be hypnotised into believing the murder of blue beret russian peace keepers and 1500 civilians was not a war crime?
What if he is a war criminal and America discovered this to be true?
What if Russia's request to investigate Mikheil Saakashvili as a war criminal was accepted and they THEN they would not stand down?
THEN America would 'finally' have the moral high ground in a conflict!
America, you don't have to CHOOSE sides; just agree to an IMPARTIAL investigation!

The problem with our country is that our elected officials have no "Cojones" to tell the American people the truth about the dangers of Socialism and the Marxists within our society. The best thing that can happen to awaken Americans is for all the Republican Senators to lose their office and then watch this country go to hell in a basket. The Democrats will destroy this country yet and we are going to allow it because of our ignorance of their agenda. The famous words uttered by Kruschev will become reality.

I just think this is the year EVERYONE changes their party affiliation.

It won't be the first time, of course.

The Republicans used to be the liberals (power to the feds) and the Democrats more conservative (state-rights based).
Even then the party-affiliates felt members of the other were the Children of the Devil.

Abraham Lincoln, the consummate man of change, was a Republican.

But nowadays, everyone thinks they are the one with 'the big ideas'.
Bah. Big whoop.

Oh well, I'm sure the Republicans will still figure out a way to fill their arena during their convention.

Why can't the senate and house work at doing the job instead of trying to keep it? If they really did what they were hired to do they wouldn't have to worry about keeping the job. Just a thought.

“Don’t be afraid to say you are disappointed in fellow Republicans… don’t hesitate to be anti-Washington, D.C."

My what a flip flop from "you're with us or against us."

Hypocrisy at it's most blatant, now that their (the republicans') approval is way down and people want to kick them out, it's ok to criticize washington.

I am sure now that Cheney is speaking at the convention there is even more reason to run. Mr. "90% votes with the President" McCain is no maverick and the only way he can win the election is to make Obama seem "an elite celebrity".

This guy is married to a beer heiress, wears $500 shoes and goes jetskiing in Georgia… how is he the "down to earth one"?

David in Illinois   August 13th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

Smart man! More Republicans, in fact all, should choose to skip the GPO hate-fest. That includes the presumptive nominee, John McBush. The Republicans have too much explaining to do to the American people…. it can't all be done in a few days up in Minnesota. What about the two endless, needless wars? What about this economy? What about the deficit? What about our increasing dependence on foreign oil… an independence that has deepened since McBush has been in the Senate and the past eight years with Bush-Cheney? What about all of that? What about the petty, negative, gutter-politics campaign McBush & Co. have been waging?
See what I mean? Call it off.

Kelby from Houston, TX   August 13th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

I feel that the presidency is all but in the bag for the Democrats. But the Dems MUST HAVE more control over the Senate. They call this a do nothing congress but everything that they have tried to do has been met with a veto or a repug philabuster. So many good bill die in the Senate. You want to get things done dems you need the whole thing. I want it to be just like it was for the Repugs for the Dems. Almost complete control over the legislative and exec branches.

So everybody send Democratic challenger Jim Slattery a dollar!!!

Stephanie   August 13th, 2008 5:24 pm ET

On McCain and his comments to the Georgian president that he is "speaking for all Americans"! Please! John "StraightTalk" (NOT) McCain does not speak for all Americans! If Barack Obama had done this the biased media would be all over him for this foolishness! Barack went overseas and was well received by other countries (in fact, made America look good) yet here at home was criticized by the media and the right wing for for doing so! I am so sick and tired of the unfairness the media continues to show in this election! Just because John McCain is a former POW does not make him capable of leading our nation! McCain really and truly scares me! He seems to hiss when he speaks and that continuous "my friends" is unnerving to say the least. Wake up America!!!

Raymond Duke   August 13th, 2008 5:21 pm ET

In this election year whether you are republican or democrat you are on your own. I think that there will also be a lot of democrat seats in jeopardy over backing Obama. I think this is open season on a lot of incumbents. I know that I will not support any senator or congressman that supported Obama. Seen where it has been put out that Colin Powell will endorse Obama. at the convention. They act like this was a big shock. Blacks have voted for Obama with 92 to 95 %. Colin Powell is black isn't he. Thats no big surprise . Just fall in line with the brothers and sisters. To bad that these white liberals were as unloyal to Hillary Clinton as the Blacks were to her and her husband who did more for blacks than any other president in history. They better hope he wins. I have a feeling if he don't that they may get a lot of lip service in the future but no presidential canidate or president will ever again take the chance on them as Bill and Hillary CLINTON DID.

Picture this:
Obama flailing around as the nation and world crumbles around him and he doesn't have a clue what to do. That happens when you put someone in charge who has absolutely no experience. Words are cheap but experience will give you an indication of what someone will do and act.

So what. There are 18 million Hillary supporters who will not be showing up for Obama, I think that's pretty significant - but of course CNN who has used it's influence to endow favortism on Obama will minimize this. Using influence to effect outcome is illegal in many situations. How is it CNN can get away with this? Where is the FCC?

Sean   August 13th, 2008 5:09 pm ET

In view of Obama's consistent lead, Mc Cain's team has gone on the offensive.

Comparing our next President to Paris and Brittany-come on!! It does surprise me that these negative ads don't seem to be having an impact on the polls.

DNC=Dumb Nuts Committee
I love the way the Obama-bots call for party unity and want a republican as VP? Get real you mindless fans, the party is democrat, not repubacat? Who will run for President, God Forbid, if Obama should win the election and serve his term? The incumbent would be a Republican. I cannot believe Obama would pick a republican as VP and expect any kind of party unity in November. His fans are pretty crazy, but I can't believe they could be that stupid. Maybe they are as dumb as I first thought they were. Whomever McCain picks as VP is, without a doubt, a hairs breath away from the Presidency. The party expects Hillary to be so loyal to the party, but Obama can pick a republican as VP, go figure. I will write Hillary on my ballot in November….

Phil in KC   August 13th, 2008 5:07 pm ET

Pretty bad when party leaders are telling their candidates they should avoid the convention. What kind of message does that send? An accurate one, I would guess. Avoid aligning yourself with McCain or the national party. If they're that radioactive in Kansas…..
Of course, we know why Ted Stevens will not be attending. I imagine he is persona non grata at any Republican gathering right now.

Jim   August 13th, 2008 5:05 pm ET

Most Americans know deep in their hearts that our two-party democratic system requires a change in leadership and a repudiation of the Bush/McCain policies. Even Republican senators like Pat Roberts sense the tide is running against the GOP and are chosing to skip the convention.

Fortunately voters who want such change have a clear choice for President: a highly intelligent, "A" student," flexible, pragmatic and clear-thinking Sen. Obama, vs. a bumbling, "C student," rigid, ideological and confused Sen. McCain.

Rob indetroit   August 13th, 2008 5:04 pm ET

John McCain has cooked his own goose and Republicans are just running for the hills. McCain and Lieberman yesterday made it clear how they stand without diplomacy on international affairs. McCain with Lieberman's support are getting us in the worse mess with Russian which neither used judgement about before speaking. Now when McCain was interviewed today about it he repeatedly tried his best to avoid questions about using the Russia and Georgia conflict as a political platform, he was asked three times and still couldn't deny or respond. Russia is not taking McCain's words lightly. Imagine McCain as president and your answer should be he is unfit and will start war and get us all killed.

I'm 100% for Obama and not just because I'm a Dem but because McCain is the worst possible candidate. I'm not saying a Rep couldn't be a great president. Had you guys put up Guilani or Hagel, the field would be very different. But you guys put up McCain because it was 'his turn' not because he has the best ideas for the country's future and he's an inspiring candidate. McCain inspiring? Come on guys, that's laughable. Give Obama the chance. He's going to go a great job and deep down you kinda know it.

Hillary pointed this all out to you, yet 51% of you voted for him anyway.

When IBM hires someone to be the CEO, they don't hire someone who has almost no experience, no matter how bright he might be.

McCain is a moderate, with tons of experience. In fact, Kerry wanted him to be his Vice President.

O'bama is qualified to be a TV news anchor, or perhaps a United States District Court judge. McCain, of course, has his faults, but at least he has 30 years of experience.
