A book based on Edwards' mistress is soaring in book sales.
A book based on Edwards' mistress is soaring in book sales.

(CNN) - Author Jay McInerney may have John Edwards to thank for a likely influx of book royalties.

His twenty-year old novel, based on the life of Edwards' mistress when she was a young adult, is soaring in sales rankings - so much so that the book's publisher has commissioned an additional 2,500 copies for print on Monday.

McInerney has said the book's main character, described as an "ostensibly jaded, cocaine-addled, sexually voracious 20-year old," was inspired by Rielle Hunter - the film producer who Edwards recently acknowledged having an affair with in 2006.

The book, about the New York singles scene amidst the excess of the 1980s, is now 299 on Amazon.com and 393 on Barnes&Noble.com - moves of a couple hundred places in only a handful of days. Before news of the affair broke, the book was thousands of spots lower.

Edwards, the former presidential candidate and 2004 vice presidential candidate, said he had a brief affair with Rielle Hunter in 2006 when she was employed by his political action committee to make "webisodes" about his campaign.

Despite breathing new life into one of his novels, McInerney said earlier this week he is no fan of the former North Carolina senator.

"To say that he slept with her but he wasn't in love with her - that's not very chivalrous," the author told the New York Daily News. "He's trying to distance himself from her."

"I don't feel my questions have been answered with regard to Edwards," he also said. "It was a half-assed confession."

I don't like John Edwards but I think the media has beat a dead horse to death. As far as the book I would not walk across the street for one if they were giving them away.

The situation with the kidnappings in mexico, please help! I haven't heard the campaigns talk about it, please please address this. I'm begging you guys if anyone take's notice please have Mr. Obama or Mr. Mccain, or any politician for that matter address it. Please!

Vesper,

I am sure if someone dug all into your business you would come up short in the moral department as well. So get off your soap box

ELLIOT   August 13th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

FOR EVERYONE WHO IS WRITING THAT THE AUTHOR IS "PROFITING FROM THE MISERY OF OTHERS".

The author wrote this book 8 yrs before Edwards cheated on his wife. Thus, how is he profiting from the misery of others? Is he really or do you just enjoy standing on your soap box?

Janice   August 13th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

Who cares who John Edwards slept with. It doesn't change the good things he has done. He is human and he made an error in judgement. Its nobody's business.

CJ   August 13th, 2008 1:18 pm ET

How are people blaming McCain for John Edwards being a liar, a cheat, and a horrible man. McCain had nothing to do with this. Quit blaming him for the Dem's own problems. You sound like a bunch of cry babies just like Obama is. Obama is a socialist pig

Morningstar   August 13th, 2008 1:16 pm ET

Oh Luis, where have you been during the repugs sexually scandales from the airport bathroom to the house of rep with a page? Ah those religious conservatives you have to "love" them.

Mauri   August 13th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

Now that this scandal has come out from the horse's mouth, the same one who is finished in politics, I beg of you, CNN, take it off the POLITICAL TICKER. Where it belongs is in the scandal sheets or on TV's Extra & Insider, and oh yes, The National Enquirer who has dibbs on it anyway. I never want to see John Edwards' name again, nor Elizabeth's either if, indeed, she was aware of his adulterous trek with R. Hunter during the current campaign. And finally, all of you who continue to trash Hillary with the Lewinsky experience, I say thank you, Lord, that Edwards did not endorse her - but laid his paltry delegates on Obama - the big winner.

aliou FL   August 13th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

I am writing my own book about Young McCain's multiple mistresses and his infidelity to a crippled wife. This book will not be centered on sex. It will be centered on the cowardice of a "war hero" who couldn't stand up for the only person in the world that God entrusted to his care: His wife, then not cindy. The first wife was callously abandonned when she needed him most.

What a shame that is the person some americans want to stand for them in times of needs.

Jake   August 13th, 2008 1:15 pm ET

And gee, this article on the front of CNN is going to help him make money on others' misfortunes, too. Did he pay for this article?

alabama   August 13th, 2008 1:11 pm ET

All I can say is that I'm glad this jerk is not in the White House or it would be Clinton all over again. Where is moral leadership and example? Where is the humility and spirituality of our founding fathers who were capable of receiving answers to their prayers when critical decisions arise? Such leaders are in great demand in our world right now! How could someone so arrogant and stupid get so far on the path to become a world leader? We must do better or perish!

Jerome J. Padin   August 13th, 2008 1:10 pm ET

After decades of the Kennedy behavior, the Clinton affairs and reported rapes and his abuse of a young intern. The mountains of unethical and criminal behavior committed by most if not all of our various elected congress critters, John Edwards is a mole hill on the sexual misbehavior of government pukes.

TMH   August 13th, 2008 1:09 pm ET

Please read the article carefully before making posts. It clearly states that THE BOOK WAS WRITTEN 20 YEARS AGO!!! (written in the 80's about the singles scene in New York during that time) .

At what time the author stated that the main character of the novel was based on Edwards' mistress is not known. Only after the affair was made public or since the time the book was first published 20 years ago?

Mccain was still married when he was fooling around with his now wife Cindy Mccain. It don't matter if it was before, during or after the race!! If people condemn Edwards then you better condemn Mccain for the same thing!! Mccain has been giving a free past as far as his personal life and wife personal life for that matter!!

I'm sorry the Johnny Reid Edwards family has had to confront the alleged charges of scandal more recently. I hope the healing process will begin in the near future for the sake of the future of the family.

Mr. Edwards did not have a glowing record as a senator from NC.

May they survive the present day difficulties and media reports of scandal, and work to enjoy a greater and happier life together. He may be better to return to his former profession as "Injury Attorney", or some of the famous lawyer/attorney programs on televisions, even as an actor!!

Politics may have to go along the wayside!

Sandra   August 13th, 2008 1:04 pm ET

I'm starting to wonder what's important in this country. We've got troops in Iraq. People are dying there daily. We hear every day about the critical situation in the Middle East with respect to Israel and the Palestinians. Russia has invaded Georgia and Putin seems to be determined to return Russia to its "old glory and prominence." Our current American president seems to have made a mess of our standing internationally. Remember those ridiculous meetings with Putin (Vladmer) and Bush. And CNN has devoted a whole section of their political page to John Edwards and his mistress. Come on. Is this really news? What are you thinking?

Sherri   August 13th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

So many people cheat – Edwards, McCain, Gingrich, Clinton have all cheated on their wives. No political party has a monopoly on lack of integrity and poor moral fiber.

Go Obama!

DC, SD   August 13th, 2008 1:03 pm ET

While the media maintains their morally bankrupt perspective by running stories that make no difference. So many important matters never receive coverage, as per usual.

Ya know, people cheat everyday. No one is perfect. I see most people flirt, kiss, etc with someone they are not involved with. And ya know what? It's not my place to judge. I don't care that Edwards cheated. It happens. He admitted it. My father cheated on my mother. Of the women I work with, all but one has had their husband cheat on them.

Anonymous   August 13th, 2008 1:02 pm ET

To all who keep saying this is about "democrats" or denouncing bad "morals" "betraying his family" "Clinton and Edwards" ....

Before you get all excited about how "moral" Republicans are: Don't forget John McCain cheated on his wife, who was severly and permanently injured and disfigured in a car wreck, with his current wife. A rich, tall, camera friendly blond with money to back his political career. He married her ONE MONTH after he divorced his first wife.

Hmmmm..... sounds like there's some dirty laundry in that basket, too!

Some of you need to read the article again. The book's 20 years old and it's fiction. I'm sure if the book were yours, you'd turn down those royalty checks, right? (that's sarcasm to the dim bulbs).

As far as Edwards, I'm not surprised at all. He looks like he's always been hung up on his appearance. Infidelity is just one of those roads a man like that some times takes to prove he's still "got it". I just thought he'd be a better liar if he got caught.

Dave, Illinois   August 13th, 2008 1:00 pm ET

A while back, CNN posted a ticker story about how Obama's followers are being portrayed as hateful and sheep. Please read the comments in these bloggs and form your own opinion. Obamites regularly hurl age-related insults and use childish names starting with "Mc". They practically fawn over anything Obama says. Please read for yourself and witness what this man's followers have to offer.

D.Nelson   August 13th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

Edwards HAS done a lot for the poor but I'm glad he's not going to be our president–and I used to be a huge fan, telling peopel he would be president some day.
I dont care who he slept with, either. I care THAT he slept with someone other than his wife and that he lied about it. Integrity isnt something you can turn on and off. And it's something I–at the least–want the illusion of having in the next president.

Edwards said the affair didnt mean anything. Really? He wants the world to believe that? He risked everything for it–his wife, his family, his career. It meant absolutely everything.

TerryDo--Puma +40   August 13th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

John Edwards now is like Richardson, whenever we see his face or hear his name it emotes antagonism for their corruption and betrayal.

They are branded by the American citizens and will forever have that stigma on their heads.

So, John Edwards, or is it the Ken doll Edwards that lived a life of lies and fornication?

Mark R. Milwaukee WI   August 13th, 2008 12:59 pm ET

I'm just betting that the affair didn't end after he found out his wife had inoperable cancer. And now he's arranging visits with the child conceived with his mistress while his wife slowly dies of inoperable cancer. EEEEEEEeeeeeewwwwww! I don't think a soap opera would touch that story line. It's too gross.

Over 4,000 soldiers have been killed in a war that is unjust and more have been sent home with mental and physical wounds that will never heal.Where is the outrage about that? All we worry about is sex and shopping. The fact of the matter is John Edwards is a good person who will be judged by GOD not by those who think they are god.

Vesper – I agree with Judgment – you don't pick an elected official based on morals, but on his or her ability to do the job they are elected to do. If we picked Presidents based on morals we would never pick a Christian, Jew or any of the other hundreds of religions in this country – why one simple reason. They could never advocate violence or the killing of another human being and therefore we would never be able to defend ourselves; we'd have to turn the other cheek time and again. So drop the holier than thou position – its not realistic.

John Edwards had a disgusting affair while his wife suffers with cancer.

That is not our business but it goes to character. He used and abused hunter and elizabeth. They should stop protecting him. We as democrats should stop trying to protect Edwards because he showed a utter carelessness for the truth and the faith his voters put in him.

I only wish Elizabeth would come out and say that she didn't encourage him to run for president, even though she found him to be a liar and a cheat. If she did support his decision to run, knowing the facts than shame on her for her part in the deceit.

This demonstrates the immaturity and gossip thriving country we live in. During economic times people complain about high gas prices, food prices and increases in basic expenses but still find funds to purchase a book about someone's personal life.

Fact, every human being has sex. Fact, over 40% of marriage end in divorce. Fact, women are more likely to cheat than men. Fact, at least 20% of marriages have at least one cheating partner. Fact, there is no correlation between fidelity and professional performance or efficiency.

Its time to grow up America, sex is a human factor of life and does not necessarily impact on ones ability to perform his or her job.

Diana Ewing NJ   August 13th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

I do not believe the John Edwards needed to confess anything to anyone except Elizabeth. If he used campaign money to woo this woman, then he owes them.. and should repay... but I will never understand the people who think he owes them anything.
The question should not have been asked... he is blamed not only for being unfaithful to his wife and family, but for not telling the reporter... " Yeh... I screwed her"...
What would we be thinking of him now if he did that..????

Bill from ALabama   August 13th, 2008 12:48 pm ET

SENSATIONALISM AT ITS FINEST! The media and journalists will do anything for a buck! They have no qualm about shreading a person's life ,family,or marriage,if it means they make a dollar. I think everyone aught to take pictures of these people with all of our new high tech phones,etc...and put their lives on the Youtube! Lets let them know how it feels to be on the receiving end of their money grabbing hypocracy. Maybe the media would seperate personal lives from public lives,as we do religion and the state. I have no need to know who Edwards is running around with or why. He is responsible for his own soul, and what acts he commits is between him and his Creator. When will we start examining our own lives, and leave judging others to God?

Sue   August 13th, 2008 12:47 pm ET

It's funny that all the negative attention has gone to John Edwards, when it takes 2 to tango. What about this woman who chose to have an affair with a married man whose wife was fighting breast cancer...could you go any lower? I blame them both. My heart aches for Elizabeth, as a breast cancer survivor myself, I can't imagine how I would feel if I were in her place...how devastating! People who find themselves on the threshold of deciding whether or not to go with their feelings, show the most selfish of atitudes, at the expense of the spouse, children, family and career....what a price to pay! I bet if he were asked today if it was worth it he would say no. I saw some news reports saying this woman had some negative things to say about Mrs. Edwards, I guess that maybe gave her a clear conscience to sleep with her husband. Please don't buy anything that will reward her for her actions.

I think this is an issue, because Millions of dollars exchanged hands, and it either did by someone laundering it to hide where it was going, or it was done through campaign financing. This is why it's an issue.

Vigla   August 13th, 2008 12:46 pm ET

I think it's ridculous that we are talking about Edwards and not McCain. After all, McCain is running for president. What McCain did to his first wife was 100 times worse than what Edwards did.

So, let's talk aout McCain's cheating and dumping of his first wife who #1 wasn't rich, #2 was disfugured in a car accident, and #3 waited fro him while he was a POW in Vietnam. What does McCain do? He cheats on her soon after he returns, dumps her, marries a rich, well connected trophy wife to satisfy his political ambition and is now running for President.

So if you hate what Edwards did, you HAVE TO hate what McCain did, right? That means you should be voting for OBAMA 08! No excuses...

Did people miss the second paragraph of this article?? The book was written and released 20 YEARS AGO!!! The fact that this woman is NOW in the news has made people (now 20 YEARS LATER) curious about her and they want to read the book. The author is not getting rich of the misery of others on purpose. This was just a stroke of "luck" for him. He didn't engineer the affair that is bringing his book attention. Why shouldn't he be happy about the extra income? Again, this book (which has nothing to do with John Edwards) was written 20 YEARS AGO!

Edwards lied to us all and has been exposed. Let's stop peeking in his windows and move on. He's no longer relevant.

McCain is still relevant though. He's still in the running for President and parading around with the heiress for whom he dumped his wife.

Both instances speak about the character of the man. Only one matters any more regardless of when it occurred.

David, Silver Spring, MD   August 13th, 2008 12:42 pm ET

I've seen reports that suggest something like 40% of the married population cheats at least once. I know at least one of my parents did. I'm pretty sure John McCain cheated on his wife.

Do we, as a society, really want to end careers and ostracize people over things like this? Should John Edwards or John McCain have to wear a scarlet letter next to their flag pins?

No surprises here, Edwards had some pretty good inspiration, and I don't mean from R Hunter, I mean from Bill cheating Clinton, Jessie cheating Jackson & a host of others. The funny thing is, they all have the continued support of their wifes, Go figure. As for hillBilly Clinton, a good look at Hillary and you can undersatnd his wanting it elsewhere. As for Jessie J, it's in his genes, they were bred to breed, it aint Jessies fault. Dear Friends:
In the shadow of the White House lies the pride of America!
Monuments for the brave and those we are proud of. They earned that
respect! During the night I heard on CNN that former President Eisenhower was being compared to a presidential candidate who should stay on permanent vacation.

A military commitment, sacrafice and those who serve this nation as veterans of war, as active military personel are heros. We will not and should not tarnish or diminish the importance of their service, sacrafice. Amoung them are the names of those who are and were missing in action. All veterans of Viet Nam know the names on that monument are for reason. No soul, no man or woman should ever be stripped of their dignity or memory. Especially for personal political gain. How many the world over know and remember, Normandy, D DAy, WWI, WWII, Korea, Phillipines, Falkner Field, Viet Nam, the Gulf War, Alphghanastan, Kuwait, Iraq, do not forget, the USS Arizona and all military action vessels, air craft, tanks for from Georgia a great state and all others of this nation we SALUTE YOU!

OBAMA IS NOT A HERO FOR STEALING OR TRYING TO IKE'S IDENTITY. I CRY AND WEEP FOR THIS SHAME.
I CRY AND WEEP FOR ALL WHO HAVE SUFFERED AND BEEN INJURED OR LOST THEIR LIVES AND THE SUFFERING OF THEIR LOVED ONES. HEROS!!!!!!!

WHAT ARE WE DOING AMERICANS? REPUBLIC FREE NATION NOT INSULT. HEROES OF ALL NATIONS YOU KNOW WHAT THEY MEANT

Hope he writes part two, where he takes a moment to consider the experience of the wife of a cheating husband, and not just focus on the character of a woman who, in the '80's, was cocaine addled and morally bankrupt, and continued her storyline of putting herself first, right into the present day.

Wrinkled Old White Man   August 13th, 2008 12:37 pm ET

Jay McInerney why don't you write a book about the POW that came home and dumped his diabled wife for the young trophy heiress? Or don't you do nonfiction?

I am glad for the author. The woman was a spoiled rich child who grew up taking whatever she wants. A real piece of work, no reguard for married people. John Edwards showed me that he is not all that. If you have to cheat, then you should not be married. Does a vow before God, family and friends not mean anything anymore? Have we truly come to this?

JMACSr   August 13th, 2008 12:34 pm ET

"He was a good man and has done a lot for the poor!" - yeah, by showing what a fraud most of those "help" efforts are....

As columnist Ruth Marcus pointed out, Elizabeth Edwards already KNEW about this when she said what a great president John Edwards would make!

Meantime, we're all supposed to believe that his sweetie is living in a $3M house funded by his biggest political contributor and Edwards knows noting about it? So we have $800 haircuts, !120K to his sweetie for a "video", and she's still collecting $15K a month to stay out of sight! The good news is that the money and efforts of his supporters have been totally wasted, showing what really bad choices they've made....typical.

Proverbs Chapter 5 of the Old Testament warns strongly against women like Rielle, "(3) For the lips of an immoral woman are as sweet as honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil. (4) But in the end she is as bitter as poison, as dangerous as a double-edged sword." More:

15 Drink water from your own well—
share your love only with your wife.[b]
16 Why spill the water of your springs in the streets,
having sex with just anyone?[c]
17 You should reserve it for yourselves.
Never share it with strangers.

18 Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you.
Rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 She is a loving deer, a graceful doe.
Let her breasts satisfy you always.
May you always be captivated by her love.
20 Why be captivated, my son, by an immoral woman,
or fondle the breasts of a promiscuous woman?

Read all of Proverbs Chapter 5 at Bible .com. Guess it just shows that there's nothing new with human nature, it's the same as it was thousands of years ago.

Susan   August 13th, 2008 12:30 pm ET

Truly why do we care? I was a John Edward's supporter in the primaries. I'm disappointed because I thought he had integrity – but my opinion means nothing. It's his wife and family that matter and their willingness to forgive. He made his bed.... he only has himself to blame for the media frenzy. But, since he is no longer a presidential candidate why is it such big news? I think because America has prayed and wished the Edward's family well because of Elizabeth's illness. We know them and like them because they seemed to be a strong couple who have endored not only her illness, but the sad loss of their oldest son. We like them as a couple and believed they had a strong marriage. Imagine Elizabeth's surprise? I've been where she is and I know how life altering it is when you think you are in a happy marriage only to find out only one of you is really in it. John Edwards is not the man of integrity he pretended to be. I'm sure he is not all bad, but he really failed this one big! He did everything wrong in handling this situation. Reille Hunter seems like a cheap tramp who is probably enjoying her 10 minutes of fame at the expense of Elizabeth Edwards and her (Reille's) own daughter. At this point why do we care? We don't... let's move on and let them work this out in peace. His political career is more than likely over.. let's hope he can save his family.

Jozee   August 13th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

Why do we expect our politicians to be perfect people? John Edwards is only a man, who falls prey to the young, beautiful, vibrant women that throw themselves at them every day. Knowing that men think about sex every 3-5 seconds, John allowed this tryst to ruin his political life--at least for a while.

I still respect his views about the poor and refuse to toss out the baby with the bath water. John Edward made an extremely dumb decision, unfortunatley it involves sex, and a possible love child. This is lovely fodder for the grist mill and the story is not likely to die for a long while.

Mike H.   August 13th, 2008 12:27 pm ET

To me the real issue here is the financial payoffs to Hunter and Edward's former aide, Andrew Young. I'll bet this was hush money whose payoff was authorized personaly by John Edwards. The question is: whose money was it? Were these campaign contributions made by ordinarly Americans blinded by this great, populist fraud.

Name a politician that HASN'T had some sort of fling with the opposite sex! I certainly don't condone what he did as my husband's infidelity caused our marriage to breakup, but the American people are not only forgiving but "forgetting" people. So, why all the crap now? It sells and the good ol press will keep it going as long as they can to SELL SELL SELL. The people who work for the press are, in my opinion, lower than people that cheat! When all you people quit buying the products, books, magazine, tabloids, etc. that make them so much money, then they won't have that to write about and it won't be new any more!

I would say more than 75% of married men in American have atleast visited a Strip club (or) Flirted with a women (or) mastrubated thinking about some other women... This is also Cheating. I dont see any difference between what Edwards did and what other married men are doing without the knowledge of their wife.
I also believe the most perverted people are those who claim to be conservatives. They are conservatives at home and something else outside (or) on the internet.
Edwards did a mistake , he lied and then admitted to it.. This women was born to ruin the career of a rising star like Edwards and he should have not done it. I feel sorry for him and I wish things would settle down in his family life.
THIS IS NOT LIBERAL TALK.. THIS IS PRACTICAL TALK.
My rating in a scale of 1 – 10 about Conservatives (who claim to be) being 100% honest in their married life is 2 and Liberals would be around the same.

PEOPLE LEARN TO READ!!!!

Everyone is condeming this book as a way to make money and not appropriate... THE BOOK IS NOT ABOUT THE AFFAIR.

READ WITH ME: The novel was written 20 years ago (1988) about NY in the 1980s. Edward's affair happened in 2006!

The book was written in the 1980s about the woman in the 1980s. It is NOT about the affair, it is about her as she was then, it just turns out that 20 years later she ended up with Edwards. Although I sense a new chapter or introduction in the works, as all the tabloids show people love this gossip.

I just want to make sure that some of you are paying attention. You did read the entire article, right? This book was written 20 years ago.

Phil in KC   August 13th, 2008 12:19 pm ET

The fact that sales of the book have picked up, once it became public that it was based on Hunter, is no surprise. People are naturally curious – particularly when it titillates their prurient interests.
The fact that the author is no great fan of Edwards is really neither here nor there as far as I'm concerned. Should he be? Should he not be? Who cares?
As for being chivalrous, has the author not heard? Chivalry is dead.
What did interest me is the timeline. He was a VP candidate in 2004. It alludes to the fact that she was his photographer or camera person, or whatever her title was, in 2006. That would have been a Congressional campaign and I was unaware that Edwards ran for Congress – either House or Senate – in 2006. Also, he is being much maligned for having an affair while his wife was diagnosed with cancer. Yet, the photo of John and Elizabeth accompanying another article on this website indicates that it was taken in May of 2007, 2 weeks after she was diagnosed with cancer. Even if it was 2 months, those timelines don't jibe. So, perhaps CNN can get the timeline straight for us. Or, maybe they could let the story drop because it's not really significant. He didn't get the nomination. You guys didn't pick up on it when it was relevant. So who cares?
In the end, it's their personal business and none of ours. Give them their privacy. You're doing Elizabeth no good by continuing to plaster this all over the airwaves.

Why did they have to come out with this nonsense about Edwards. I know what he did was wrong, but at least have the common decency to have his wife spend whatever days she has left on this earth and I hope a lot to have them spent in peace and without scandal. Anything to sell newspapers.

Michele, Oregon   August 13th, 2008 12:15 pm ET

"Alot of unanswered questions".........At this point, it is NONE of anyone's business. Their lives are in shambles and Edwards is not running for any office.

Personally, I prefer the "do-gooder" who fails rather than those who mock or never try. We all have to face ourselves in life and this is the crucible for Edwards. And I would say to him "don't give up". Get through it and come back to the poverty agenda with the sounder motivation of someone who has been purified.

David   August 13th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

David - RTP NC   August 13th, 2008 12:13 pm ET

John Edwards is the consummate politician – a quintessential spin doctor. From his $600 haircuts and fancy home in Chapel Hill – all the while talking up the plight of the poor...to a happenstance dalliance with a campaign staffer. There is a reason why Ms Hunter will not pursue a paternity test and it probably has much to do with owning a house that is out of character for her position in life.

At a time when this country needs character and integrity, John Edwards is all about that which we need less.

karenVA   August 13th, 2008 12:12 pm ET

When a Hillary die-hard loon says Obama was not selected by the public, I hear "count my vote, not yours". And that's why if the Clintons continue to sabotage our nominee, she can forget about my vote next time. I voted for Obama. He won our primary. How is this not public support? Blaming John Edwards for Hillary's defeat is nonsense. How many more excuses will she put forward for running a lousy campaign? I suppose it makes sense in a weird way when her people say they will switch to McCain – they are partial to bumbling disorganized losers who only have negative attacks to offer the voters.

I'm overwhelmed by Jay McInerney's cleverness in publishing a book to "profit from the misery of others" a full 20 years in advance. Maybe we should nominate him.

Who gives a flying pig's butt about some affair?!? That's not important news!!! I would rather know what the United States has been "doing or building" in Georgia that made the Russians invade last week. Looks like we have another Cuban Missile Crisis on our hands., except this time it's the Georgia Missile Crisis, and it's America tampering this time around. Between the new missile defense system in Prague and American occupation in Georgia, it seems to me like Russia has seen through this attemt to suffocate Russia's military by surrounding it with strategic American militatry facilities to the south and west. Looks like Putin is putin his foot down and putin the kaybash on the United State's attempts to strategically surround Russia. Too bad we'll never hear anything about it because the fascist news media (CNN, FOX, MSNBC (except Olbermann) is paid by Washington to do whatever serve's Washington's best interest's. I used to love John Edwards (in a political way), but I am so disappointed he would fall for the advances of this kind of woman. Unless someone can show me that he was the aggressor, I will believe it was her offering herself up .It was the same with Bill and Monica showing him her thong. How to women with this kind of behavior and a salacious history ever make it into someone's campaign, let alone the White House? Reminds me of nursing school in the 80s!

Big question: Why no puritanical chastising, finger pointing and fainting in the church aisles about McLame's "sins" by the "Taliban" evangelicals like they are doing to Edwards?

Why does John Edwards owe any confessions to this jerk. Of course he is not in love with her he slept with her based on the attraction he felt for her not out of love. While I am not excusing what he did, he does not owe any further explanations to the media or to this person. And who is the media to judge otherwise whether her child is John Edwards or this guy's child.

Perhaps he has written a book about, oh, say, an Arizona Senator who has had numerous affairs and even gotten involved with and married a trophy heiress before the ink was dry on the divorce papers?! Who'd believe that?!

What!!!   August 13th, 2008 12:07 pm ET

This is just like people slowing down on the interstate for that car crash. We have become a nation of pigs that roll around in the "Dirt" provided on the evening news.

Once again, I am so proud of my countrymen. I love my country but, not all the people in it.

GARY   August 13th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

he said he had his afair while his wife was in remission how wonderfull of him how this man and i use the term losely can sleep at night is beyond me-

JOB   August 13th, 2008 12:06 pm ET

"To say that he slept with her but he wasn't in love with her — that's not very chivalrous," ...

Well, he didn't inhale... typical Democrat response when facts catch up to them.

Marc PDX   August 13th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

Jeez, Russia has invaded another country (shades of 1968) and the Edwards scandal is getting as much attention in the MSM. Edwards isn't even a major political figure anymore and it seems pointless to wallow in his family's demolition. Leave them alone. Edwards is done with politics.

Maggie Muggins From Selwyn   August 13th, 2008 12:04 pm ET

I guess CNN will be doing an expose on all McCain's adultrous flings in the same manner they are covering John Edwards. The Republicans won't care cause they are the righteous right and what they do will be forgiven.

MJE WPG   August 13th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

another perfect example of just what poltics is really all about, and for those that don't think there needs to be an overall change in washington "when the garbage trucks move in please make sure that you are thrown in with all the other trash and slime.

jackrainman   August 13th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

What misfortune? He cheated on his wife who had been diagnosed with cancer.

Me   August 13th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

I have lost complete respect for John Edwards. Forget that he cheated on his wife, he cheated on his SICK wife, who is dying slowly.

Brian, Pittsburgh   August 13th, 2008 12:03 pm ET

McCain had an affair, and he's running for president. If a man can betray his wife, he can betray his country.

Kristena   August 13th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

John Edwards probably wasn't in love with her, but did he have to make a point of saying so? I'm with Jay McInerny on this one. It's like Clinton saying he didn't have sex with "that woman." Didn't she have a name? This just shows how both of these men really feel about women. Women should wise up to the clues men like this give that they really don't have any concern or respect for the female of the species.

ChicagoJosh   August 13th, 2008 12:01 pm ET

I used to always like Edwards, but I love this news.

If our Politicians are going to tell us how to live our lives (abortion, gay marriage, prayer in school, etc), then these politicians better have some values of their own.

Edwards was a bastard to his faithful wife and children. He deserves all the bad publicity he gets.

Media, please don't be afraid to talk about McCain's affairs while he was in his first marriage. This country should be proud to have a family like the Obama's represent them.

anonymous   August 13th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

I can't believe for the life of me, that people are going to buy this book. Guess you are supporting them, because they get money for any book sold. They probably did it for money, well that is usually what they do. Bet they could care less about anyone else with all the money they have. I will not buy any such garbage.

Ellie, Boyds MD   August 13th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

Geeez, here's a new concept Americans are KNOWN for making a profit off other people's misfortune. Talk about the integrity of the American People. What a bunch of "HATERS" greedy for the almighty dollar.

Money is DEFINITELY the root of all EVIL. Next thing you hear there will be a movie.

Never mind the pain the family or his children is going through. NO ONE ever thinks about them until it happens to THEIR OWN FAMILY and then they don't like it. Everyone is quick to "point their holier than thou fingers" until it happens to them.....

Funny that huh?

CT voter   August 13th, 2008 12:00 pm ET

There is a war going on with one of the biggest superpowers known to man and we are still talking about somoene's secret love life...only in America...

Cathy   August 13th, 2008 11:59 am ET

I wish people would stop acting so surprised that another politician had an affair. Infidelity is a bipartisan issues....and dates back to the days of Abraham Lincoln (if not sooner). So unfortunately for his wife, John Edwards just joins the club of another person cheating on his/her spouse...just like B. Clinton, McCain and Spitzer.

If you ask me B. Clinton and McCain haven't suffered politically to much from their infidelity.

Luis   August 13th, 2008 11:58 am ET

Gotta love those Dimocrats (spelled correctly).......

mama4obama   August 13th, 2008 11:55 am ET

I personally have no desire to read about trashy women. I do my best to stay as far away from them as possible. I have absolutely no respect for anyone who cheats, married or not. What a loser!

Mickie in PA   August 13th, 2008 11:53 am ET

And still, not one word in the press about John McCain cheating on his crippled wife and kids with his trophy second wife. She has enough $$ to keep it out of the press.

William, from Cali!   August 13th, 2008 11:53 am ET

Some people, need to "get a life, of their own".........Reading about the "misery, of others" in an opportuntistic bestselling novel.......surely, want make "their life;" any more interesting..........................As for the author, his "deeds" speaks for themselves!

The Heck with Lying Edwards and his cheap Mistress

Mary Dale   August 13th, 2008 11:51 am ET

Who cares about this stuff? Edwards is out, its a 20 year old novel that never made it. Lets hear more about John McCains extra-marital affair that ruined his first marraige. Why dont we hear about that in a ticker article? Monica L. is still a hot topic

dave   August 13th, 2008 11:49 am ET

"To say that he slept with her but he wasn't in love with her — that's not very chivalrous," the author told the New York Daily News. "He's trying to distance himself from her."

I hope what he said was the truth. There is no need for Edwards to be chivalrous toward the woman who sleeps around with married men. Edwards needs to start being chivalrous towards his wife

FabFem   August 13th, 2008 11:49 am ET

John Edwards and Bill Clinton- two sleazbags who will not be in the White House next year. Thank goodness.

Nia - AZ by way of MN   August 13th, 2008 11:49 am ET

Everyone wants thier 15 minutes. how did a book already get completed and released for sale?! Didn't the story just break this past Friday. Something about this whole thing seems staged.

Emma   August 13th, 2008 11:48 am ET

John Edwards is a liar! He is probably a new dad and shame on him for what he has done and is doing to his family.

If he ever runs for public office where my vote is needed, guess what hell will freeze over before I give him my vote even for dog catcher!

He mistreated his wife and now she has to deal with the public side of his confession and her inoperable cancer! Elizabeth needs all of her attention focused on her survival not the antics of her cheating husband! Shame on you Edwards!!

Proud to be American   August 13th, 2008 11:48 am ET

McInerney need to mind his own business – John does not have to confess to anyone other than his God and wife and family – if they forgive him so shall we .... CNN let this one go okay...

Michael G- Ventura ca   August 13th, 2008 11:48 am ET

I trusted him. No more!

We need to elect DECENT men and women as leaders - not the lowest of the low who lie, cheat and are dishonest, with absolutely no moral fiber. What kind of example is that? WHO can look up to him???? This "hero" turns out to be a ZERO.

We put our faith and trust in him and he betrays us, as well as his family.

Isn't it funny that even though Obama is on vacation and kind of out of the spotlight, McSame still can't garner attention....something else, whether good or bad usually steals his thunder! God don't like ugly!

Ready For Change   August 13th, 2008 11:43 am ET

I just keep seeing Edwards and Obama hugging the day Edwards FINALLY came out and endorsed Obama. He should have endorsed Clinton, she is the one who was much closer to his voters and his supposed agenda. What a worm. I guess I have a much clearer view on Edwards view of women now.

Linda   August 13th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Please America grow up! People cheat, people make mistakes - leave the Edwards alone. This is none of our business!

Sigh   August 13th, 2008 11:41 am ET

Who cares. Really.

JM from SC   August 13th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Americans are so gossip hungry. This book should not make the money it took to think about writing it. That fling or whatever it was should be between Edwards, that woman, his wife and God. There is too much trouble in the world to worry about who is in an affair with who.

dollorbil   August 13th, 2008 11:40 am ET

Nowhere is it written that you have to love someone to sleep with them. That goes for female as well as male.

Kelby from Houston, TX   August 13th, 2008 11:40 am ET

I have not heard alot about the woman with John Edwards had an affiar with. Heck, I had not even heard the woman's name, and now this.
And to find out that the woman was "ostensibly jaded, cocaine-addled, sexually voracious 20-year old," ... Rielle Hunter. Sexually voracious, eh? Yeah, hanging around someone like this is not good for anybody's marriage

TWT   August 13th, 2008 11:39 am ET

You go John, they don't care the other John (McCain) did the same.

Of coarse thou that is exceptable by women and faith groups as long as your a Republican or a Hillary supporter.

Ouh ya- you go to Bill!!

Joe Kiloz   August 13th, 2008 11:39 am ET

There are many unanswered questions about this. The mainstream media is hoping that Edwards' denial wil satisfy. Under what circumstances did Miss Hunter come up with the down payment for the purchase of the $3,000,000.00 enclave in which she now lives ? Who put out this money and how was it obtained ?
This story has a Watergate ring to it and it is just beginning to brew. The Enquirer should be thanked for shining its spotlight on it while mainstream media chose to ignore.
I don't know about you, but I think Miss Hunter is not taking the paternity because it will reveal Edwards' continuing lying. Besides, and understandingly, Mr. Edwards says that the affair was "nothing." And that "nothing" is something her daughter will find out sooner or later.
Hope the medium will get to the bottom of this.

Abby   August 13th, 2008 11:39 am ET

I guess that’s the way it is. Some profit from the misery of others.

I still wish Edwards well but would lose all respect for him if that’s actually his child and he denied her…then again maybe he’s trying to spare Elizabeth that last bit of pain.

What a mess he created. What a mess.

This book is FICTION. Yet these morons will buy it up
and hit the Net with their, "Did you know she did this?"
*shaking my head* How truly pathetic we've become.

And then I realize how idiotic I am for spending time
commenting on this ridiculous article.

chicago chris   August 13th, 2008 11:35 am ET

I love how Hillary supporters continue to say Obama was selected by the DNC and not the public, even though Mark Penn even admitted her campaign was in dis-array and didn't plan for after Feb 5th. It may have looked like he was handed it, but only because Hillary looked so bad in the final leg of her campaign.

Judgement over experience   August 13th, 2008 11:34 am ET

I don't care who he slept with, he didn't cheat on me. He is still a good man and has done alot for the poor.
