Barack Obama is up by 6 points in the latest CNN poll of polls.
Barack Obama is up by 6 points in the latest CNN poll of polls.

(CNN) – Barack Obama continues to hold a solid lead over John McCain with just over 80 days remaining until the presidential election, a new CNN poll of polls shows.

According to the average of several recent national polls, Obama registers 47 percent among registered voters nationwide with McCain at 41 percent.

That lead has basically held steady over the last two months: A CNN poll of polls on June 20 also had the race at 6 points, 46 percent to 40 percent.

The national general election poll of polls consists of four surveys: Pew (July 31-August 10), CBS (July 31-August 5), AP-IPSOS (July 31-August 4), and Gallup tracking (August 10-12). The poll of polls does not have a sampling error.

Of course the CNN poll isn't slanted. they have only been shamelessly in bed with BO since the beginning. Rasmussen, a more reputable poll has them within 2 point for over 9 days. 25% of dems are not falling in line behind BO. They are afraid his only real example of proven success is self-promotion.

Hey Bob, you identified the "endless war" as being your concern.

What makes you thik Obama will end it? He originaly said he would, now he has come out and basically said his "timeline" will be subject to preconditions on the ground. That sounds very familiar. . . .ya, I know why. . . . .McCain has said this from day one.

____________________________________________________

I hate to burst your bubble but Obama has ALSO said this from day one, he just has been misquoted, if you go back and see what he actually said you would see that he stated that he would START WITHDRAWING THE TROOPS IMMEDIATELY (or tell the generals to devise a plan for immediate withdrawla) but that the rate of withdrawal depended on the conditions on the ground but that is should be accomplished in 16 months. idiot

Finally for those of you who tout experiance over judgement I simply point out that in the 1970s and 1980s IBM was the WORLD LEADER in computers, they were the undisputed industry standard. they ahd the experiance, the knowledge, the people, eeverything that should keep them on top and a couple of guys in a garage, with NO EXPERIANCE, NO DEGREES, NO MONEY nothing but an idea and good judgement were literally laughed at by IBM. Now me I wish I could have sent Microsoft some money and bought into them then… I am doing that now by buying into (with my donations to his campaign) my countries future and Mr. Obama's win. So go out and support Big Blue me I will take IBM (I could have used the same story and told about Ford or Chevy or Chrysler and compared them to Honda, Toyota, or Datsun (who has undergone a name change since the 1970s!) but I am sutre you will see the point the old, traditional, the failed, must give way to the new, the untried, the next generation of leaders

Mike Cobb, Palo Alto, CA   August 13th, 2008 3:43 pm ET

To what extent do you think that McCain's comments are a reflection of his chief foreign policy advisor, who was until recently a paid lobbyist for the country of Georgia … and one of the neocon architects of the war in Iraq? This connection needs to be clearly and forcefully made by the media … or do they like McCain too much to report unpleasant truths?

Nan Houston Texas   August 13th, 2008 3:42 pm ET

I find it rather funny to read the McCain fans postings. They state that if you back Obama you are stupid, he doesn't know anything and a number of other rumors which have been proven time and time again to be false. This just demonstrates the type of individual who will follow a man who states he has no clue as to how economics work, makes so many gaffes in his speeches he is second only to Bush, and sang the song "Bomb Bomb Bomb Bomb Iran"

Mike, Syracuse, NY   August 13th, 2008 3:38 pm ET

Let's see, McCain is a Rep. in a Democratic year, he admits to knowing little about the economy (America's #1 concern), and routinely misspeaks; yet Obama can't seem to move the dial at all in over 2 months. In fact, a month ago he led by 8. This should be a blowout. Could it be that many Americans see through to Obama celebrity dazzle and see there's no beef? Remember how Obama froze in the debates with Hillary, especially when George Steffanopolis asked some tough questions? One big mistake by Obama and he's toast. Democrats, be afraid, be very afraid. Can't wait for the PUMA demonstration at the convention.

The Poll of Polls is an average of polls across the country. The November electorial process is a state by state winner take all vote. Per one analysis, the 6% difference reported can be completely accounted for by Obama's lead in California, the land of fruits and nuts.

Polls reflect the popular vote. Our so called Democracy is not by popular vote for the Presidency, it is by electoral vote. Obama could win the popular vote and still lose, like sort of what happened to Gore (but Florida was stolen by Jebb Bush). Both of these candidates better concentrate on a specific few key states to win, because this is going to be another close election like in 2000.

A lot of people are committed to Obama no matter what. The real test is going to be the voters, those 60% who decide after the conventions. I think he got a lot from being the Dems nominee, it's their year, but many of the people supporting Obama really dislike the man. Like me. I keep looking for reasons not to support Obama, and I will find them. Come November, Obama will loose because of people like me.

Duke   August 13th, 2008 3:25 pm ET

I know that traditional wisdom says that Obama should be up my more, but I think this is good news. This is not a traditional campaign and Obama is not a traditional candidate. McCain is expending alot of energy right now while Obama is expending none, yet he continues to hold on to his lead. Until McCain can find the right negative campaign line of attack that actually puts him into the lead, I think the Obama camp wil just coast until Sep/Oct then go into high gear for a sprint to the finish.

Obama is trying to shorten the game. McCain can only change this if he can show that he can take a lead. So far his fierce attacks are having little impact over the last several weeks.

I think that what is being missed is that the Obama camp is never going to win by a landslide. I think they are perfectly comfortable winning by 1 or 2 percentage points. I don't see any panic in the Obama campaign apparatus. This is going to be interesting. McCain has to shake him up and it has not happened yet. McCain has to go more negative, but right now he is right on the crest of going so negative that it is going to hurt him, so he has to be careful.

I know that the Repugs try to reverse the argument that Obama has something to prove, but in fact, it is McCain that has to prove that with all his experience and referring to Obama as a young man (age card) that he can stop this upstart that supposedly should not be on the same stage as him.

I love the way that McCain always suggests that he can teach Obama something or that Obama needs to learn and understand. McCain needs to learn and understand how to beat Obama period. I have a feeling that McCain is going to learn the same lesson as Hillary. They both underestimated Obama and they are both going to pay the price or being so dismissive.

For the people who keep saying Rasmussen has Obama's lead lower please look at the polled population. The daily tracking poll is from likely voters, not the type that Obama's ground forces have been recruiting this year.

If you want to quote that poll then look at the others that poll registered voters. Obama's lead goes up to 6 points and doesn't drop below 3 for almost all.

Factor in the other candidates and its in low double figures or high single digits. Not a bad lead before the debates.

Independent NYC-

"A 6% lead in the general election is a landslide equivalent in electroial college points"

You can't be that naive. If you are just trying to paint a better picture, stop. You are not foolig anyone. Everyone knows, the general election IS not a general election. It is a bunch of State elections.

If Obama won CA and NY by 100%. Meaning, McCain didn't get a vote, it is no different than if it was 49% to 515. Winner take all, remember. So, if all the states Obama wins, is by huge margins, and all of McCain's wins are 49-51, mccain could still win, but lose the NATIONAL polls.

You may need to go and do some more research, so you understand!

Klaus   August 13th, 2008 3:04 pm ET

"Funny how the US Today poll shows McCain 4 points ahead of Obama. Guess it's all about whom you ask and where you do the polls at. Wait for the big surprise for Obama in Sept.."

Actually, that poll showed Obama up by 3, but they created a McCain lead with a dubious 'likely voter' model. Regardless, Gallup polls released since have all shown Obama with a significant lead, including a poll released yesterday that had Obama up by 7.

Brooke   August 13th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Debby   August 13th, 2008 3:03 pm ET

Its still staggering at 6 points with a report of a sold out acceptance speech. Pretty dim for Obama I would say since those undecideds haven't made up their minds yet. I would think Obama would have triple digits just in his rock star status alone. In what states are these polls conducted they never mention that. You can poll 1000 people alone in Harlem, Georgia, Mississippi, etc. and that will give you your 6 point lead for Obama.

It's too bad there is so much rancor between the bloggers as this election year progresses so does your futures and your country's future.

Why don't people do a comparison on the following rather than relating lies and smears about one candidate or the other?

Which candidate shows more intelligence?
Which candidate proposes the best economic plan?
Which candidate has the highest stature throughout the world?
Which candidate has the best family values based on their history?
What are each candidate's voting records on issues like Veteran's Affairs, Womens Rights, domestic issues and foreign relations?

All the above and lots of other issues will determine how you want your futures to go and probably how they will develop.

J W Westerhausen   August 13th, 2008 2:45 pm ET

News reports say John McCain has been talking with the President of Georgia on a daily basis, isn't this against the law, only the administration should be?

Jeff, AL   August 13th, 2008 2:43 pm ET

For Obama to have a significant lead, he needs Senator Clinton on the ticket.

karen   August 13th, 2008 2:40 pm ET

John Mccain ia an honorable man who is well versed in the political arena. It matters little what your poll says, Mr. Mccain will be our next president due to the fact that Mr. Obama is unprepared to handle what lies ahead for our country. We all know it but are afraid to say it. He needs to sit and learn from a man like Mr. Mccain who has spent 5 years of his life facing down the enemy. Where does that leave Mr. Obama?

Not to undervalue Obama's political ability, but McCain's views are so similar to the failed "ideas" of George W. Bush and such an UNINSPIRING & BORING politician (he reads, badly, instead of speaking), that Obama should be ahead of at least 10/15 points…..

JDC // Ohio   August 13th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

After the next election…suggest we split the country…liberal vs conservative, socialists vs capitalists, irresponsible vs responsible, spenders vs savers, unproductive vs productive. Worthless welfare vs hard workers. You get the idea! And in 6 months, the political truth will be obvious.

Erica, TX   August 13th, 2008 2:29 pm ET

Watch the MSM spin this into "why isn't his lead larger?" Not to worry, this is the year we take the country back. We want a President that is honest, intelligent, and intuitive. We won't get that with McCain, just more of the same.

YES WE CAN, AND WE WILL!!

INDEPENDENT NYC   August 13th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Shawn - GA   August 13th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

Dems are ALWAYS ahead at this point, actually they are normally ahead by a lot bigger margin. In the end Obama will lose… so who cares now? NO ONE!!

People are always saying that these polls are not calling on Cell phones and such.. what they are forgetting is that they are also not calling people at work. Since most of Obama supports are not working, they are home to get these calls.

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   August 13th, 2008 2:28 pm ET

If this maintains through October into November and this gap is the same nationally as it could be in many states, it looks like McCain would lose. We still have the conventions, debates and VP picks to hear about. It is too bad this isn't broken down by state.

Praetorian, Fort Myers   August 13th, 2008 2:27 pm ET

It will clearly be a close election.
Frankly– a whole bunch of independants will be deciding this sqweaker. And most of those people when asked about political favorites from a pollster would say likely tell them where they could put their poll.

Thank God for those God clinging, gun clinging, NASCAR racing, beer drinking–regular folk.

Steve - Wyoming   August 13th, 2008 2:25 pm ET

It's nice to see a US politician mobbed by wellwishers in other countries again – other than Bush in Albania. A lot of what anti-Obama people say doesn't really make sense. They are so bitter and desperate, they'll say anything.

PJ, New York Independent   August 13th, 2008 2:17 pm ET

Once again, these polls don't mean a thing… let's see what happens in November. I predict Obama will lose. It may not be a landslide win for McCain, but it will be big.

Remember, John Kerry was always 'up' in these biased/liberal polls too and we all know how that turned out.

Was for Hillary, now for McCain.

Military Man   August 13th, 2008 2:16 pm ET

Kerry and Gore were up by a lot more than 6 points at this points during their respective election cycles (try double digits). Moral of the story? Don't count on anything until the polls close in November.

I have a feeling there's gonna be a lot of backlash amongst the democrats once Hillary's supporters realize that she's not gonna be either a presidential contender or a choice for VP.

My friends (cough*) John McSame has been talking this Washington game for 26 YEARS, AMERICA; YET he is only now realising that he has been on the WRONG SIDE of the issue all along!

John McSame judgement to lead = talk tough games just like he has been doing all his celebrity life in WASHINGTON!

He was talking about Edwards—but when it was pointed out that mccain committed adultery the right winger said, "he had his body broken in prison" and "edwards wife has cancer". So the logic taught in college says, THEN IT IS OK TO COMMIT ADULTERY IF YOU WIFE IS NOT SICK OR IF YOU SERVED YOUR COUNTRY. by the way, i am a vet also and now have an excuse–my wife is not sick and i am a vet. wow

Sen. John McCain's top foreign policy adviser prepped his boss for an April 17 phone call with the president of Georgia and then helped the presumptive Republican presidential nominee prepare a strong statement of support for the fledgling republic.

Wow, So THIS is McCain's doing! He's such an LOSER when it comes to foreign policies.

Obama and his wife do not hate America. It was just a thesis paper. The school didn't seem to have a problem with it. The Reverend Wright only speaks for himself, not Obama. He's not an empty suit. Your must be a Hillary fan, a McCain fan, or just someone whose really scared because the reality of the situation is that he will be the next president. You know African-Americans are citizens of this country too. The Constitution does not say that they cannot become the president.
Get a grip. Get a life. Go Away.

So, why are you under the impression Obama would be bette than McCain when it comes to this "endless war"?

As far as I can tell, they have the same views, and, I would rather have McCain, a man who has MANY more years of experience with foreign affairs.

Just my thoughts!

Mike - Texas   August 13th, 2008 2:12 pm ET

The problem is that historically at this time of year the democrats are ususally ahead by 20 – 25 points in the polls.

A 6 point spread is nothing this time of year, you may as well call it tied.

Morningstar   August 13th, 2008 2:11 pm ET

As much as I love Hillary, it will be impossible for Obama to lead with Hillary at his side. There cannot be two or three president, in additions the repugs will use the words of Hillary against Obama.

McCain is not nice at all. War war andar. Now he wants to go to war against Russia because "we are Georgians". My friends let this McOld go home!

C'mon guys, how 'bout engaging in a civil campaign and addressing serious issues?

Betcha CNN moderates this post though …

Wendy Ontario, Canada   August 13th, 2008 2:08 pm ET

I think Obama is likley farther ahead but the young people supporting him are rarely involved in polling due to cell phones etc. It doesn't seem to matter whether Obama is ahead or not, the pundents do everything they can to find reasons he is not doing well enough. I was kind of surprised to hear that he is "too thin", never knew that had alot to do with politics. :(

CNN I got confused !
Your poll of polls average is flawed
Let's do the math
Pew (July 31-August 10) : Obama +3
CBS (July 31-August 5) : Obama +6
AP-IPSOS (July 31-August 4) : Obama +6
Gallup tracking (August 10-12) : +6

The average should be : (3 + 6 + 6 + 6 )/4 = 5. 2 NOT 6

By the way I am an Obama Supporter

His pastor is a racist and also hates America, Obama belonged to this church for 20 years.

His former Muslim coordinator was tied to Hamas which is intent on destroying America.
