DNC Chair Howard Dean expressed shock over the shooting.
DNC Chair Howard Dean expressed shock over the shooting.

(CNN) – Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean has issued a statement reacting to the shooting at the Arkansas Democratic Party headquarters:

"This senseless tragedy comes as a shock to all of us. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Chairman Gwatney and his family and we pray for his full and speedy recover," he said. "While the investigation of this shooting continues, and our primary concern remains with Bill and his family, we commend the courageous and speedy action of law enforcement officials in apprehending the suspect."

Respects to the Gawtney family…senseless and random in the extreme. There is so much mental illness and stress in the world that if we do not make a change and soon, all hecks gonna break loose.

Note to HRC supporters: This story, much like the presidential campaign is NOT about her. Geez.

Will Hillary supporter give it up… Why are you demonizing Dean? She lost fair and square… A man just Died and all you worry about is Hillary…

This shouldn't be unexpected and I won't be surprised if it happens again. Even in a sad moment like this, you can still read the hatred in these blogs. Just look through them, see what is being written about conservatives, liberals, democrats, republicans, race, ageism, religion. This is simply an election. No matter who wins, life will go on after, the economy will get better (it's cyclical you know), countries will go to war and make peace, jobs will come and go, some people will pray and some won't, kids will grow and have their own families, etc, etc.

It is really sad that people cannot take the time to address what occurred today - a man was shot and later he died. It is not the time to be bad mouthing anyone -

Sacto Joe   August 13th, 2008 7:09 pm ET

Some of the comments on this site are simiply repugnant. You people should be ashamed of yourselves.

My prayers and sympathies go out to the family and friends of Chairman Gwatney, to the State of Arkansas, and to the country as a whole. May the Lord hold him in the palm of His hand.

Gary   August 13th, 2008 7:07 pm ET

TO WIN the nomination and election for the Presidency, not only do candidates have to rake in lots of money from the public by selling themselves to the public just as any product on t.v. , newspaper, magazine, internet, etc, which in most instances the beautifully packaged product is a big dissapointment once opened. I believe once O. is elected the pundits will waste not time in tearing him to shreds for every perceived miscalculation on his part, and believe me there are going to be thousand of bad judgements from O. I just can't wait for the barbarians to tear down the walls and we will see what all this messiahnic nonsense was about!

My heart goes out to Gwanety families. Gwanety and others democrats know the risks one has to make to push for change. Gwanety is a true democratic hero right now. He knew in order to change our country's way of living was to sacrifice his own life. Gwanety you are a AMERICAN DEMOCRATIC HERO TODAY AND FOREVER. STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER.

Andrea:
You are soooooooo condescending…
'How in God's name….?"

HRC stayed in the race for the small pocketed millions who couldn't financially carry her campaign but begged her to stay in. She was a known figure to them and a heroine to men and women everywhere who admired her strength in the 1990s despite the FEAR and HOSTILITY from many who couldn't bear the thought of a FIRST LADY with a brain.
This country was in a LOT BETTER FINANCIAL SHAPE in 2000 than it is now, with a target for a Federal Balanced budget and a surplus!!!!
What was it? $400 ea to squander that surplus in GWB first year?? oh boy.
I respect anyone's right to vote for Obama or anyone else.

But there was No SOUL in the PRIMARY with a stronger RESUME of service to the American PEOPLE and the DEMOCRATIC Party than Hillary Clinton, And I will STAND FOR THE RESPECT SHE MOST CERTAINLY DESERVES.

Voice of Reason   August 13th, 2008 6:37 pm ET

Andrea….if that is your real name, a woman president would have been a REAL ground-breaking historical decision as compared to electing another guy, what is new or historical about that? Gender trumps race any time, specially in this country, there has been TOO MANY male presidents, breaking that chain would had been monumental, too bad women are so wedded to men as presidents that it could never occur to them a woman could have made a great one, not a mediocre one as most male presidents have been. You will never know, would you?

P.S. This is typical CNN reporting…not telling the WHOLE STORY on this. And judging by the posts here, most of you don't even know what went on. This story makes it SOUND like it was just someone who was against the Dem Party official…while this nut actually appeared somewhere else threatening in a CHURCH. So CNN, do a public service and report the ENTIRE story like we at least get on local news.

Instead of people bad mouthing other people in these blogs why wouldn't people bad mouth the organizations that lobby to keep all the wackos armed to the teeth?

I've heard Lou Dobbs championing the right to bear arms and supporting the Texan who shot and killed two unarmed people he thought was robbing his neighbour. This type of empty headed rhetoric from public figures is one of the reasons the U.S. is so far behind modern societies.

If people want to blog for the better of their society try going against some of these senseless murders.

Laura   August 13th, 2008 6:19 pm ET

To Soldier 4 OBAMA.

Just by your nom de guerre (French for war name), you scare me. In fact, you sound like a Naiton of Islma follower. Now that's something to be very afraid of.

The Gang of Four - Machievillian Obama, Howard the Screamer, deer-in-the-headlights, simpleton Nancy Pelosi, and dimwit Donna Brazile - have taken de Democratic Party into such deep, dark waters that "for the first time in my adult life," I am voting for the Republican Party.

Moreover, I am willing to bet (and I don't like gambling) that Hillary and Bill, notwithstanding their public position, they, too, will be voting for Mcain.

Karen - Missouri   August 13th, 2008 6:16 pm ET

This is a tragedy no matter who it is. It should NOT be trivialized or made into some political matter. Apparently earlier in the day the shooter also entered a Baptist Church to threaten shooting…at least that's what's on our local news. A man shoots up the Democratic office and a person inside in the US. and all CNN can talk about is Georgia over by Russia and Cindy Mc Cain's hand. Dean is one of the great Democrats of this century, who was blasted by the media in 2004. We wouldn't be in the situation we are in if Dean had been the presidential candidate. He could have beaten Bush and his advanture in Iraq.

I just hope that there will be a country after this administration for our children and grandchildren to enjoy. This administration has bred greed and selfishiness the likes I have not known in my 65 years. Dean would not have allowed that to happen. But, he was wiped out by the media.

Blueray98, I hope you're joking. It is obvious to me that this country's healthcare system is in dire need of overhaul. If it wasn't, there wouldn't be so many people on this blog who obviously can't afford their medication. What a bunch of complete BS. Yes, yes, yes. It's all everyone else's fault. The entire media was against Hillary. Hundreds of TV stations, newspapers, magazines. All in a super conspiracy against "Our Little Girl". Yes. Obama was "selected" through the same vast conspiracy, in which hundreds of Democratic delegates, dozens of state campaigns, hundreds of campaign workers, the government, the communists, the aliens, the FBI, the CIA, the NSA, all conspired to get Obama in the right place. No, Hillary didn't make even one mistake. She is without fault. She didn't spend money like a drunken sailor, even after it was obvious she wasn't going to win. Nope. She hired all the right people, like Mark Penn. Nope, Mark Penn didn't stab her in the back. Nope, Wolfson didn't make one bad decision. Nope. Bill Clinton didn't say one stupid thing during the entire campaign. Yes. Hillary did dodge sniper fire while being covered by Sinbad, the comedian. All the sexists, chauvinist pigs jumped into this same vast conspiracy to prevent her from taking the nomination. If that sarcasm is lost on you, you are a complete idiot.

Would you Republicans stop thinking people are stupid on this blog site. Everyone knows that is you all making all of the Hilary Clinton talk. And you are sounding just stupid. Move on honey people are over that. And the more you nominee speaks the more its clear that he can't get anywhere near that white house.

This Democrat on Democrat crime is disturbing.

Maybe if we just banned Democrats……

Marty   August 13th, 2008 5:02 pm ET

Evidence? Who needs it? Certainly not some who have written comments here. They have already decided it is 'conservatives', 'McCain's campaign', 'GOPers', 'Hannity & Rush'. Who needs evidence or police!?! Why not withhold judgment until the FACTS are in? Right now, our prayers should be with the victim and family. Accusations only exacerbate an already divisive atmosphere.

Joe Reg   August 13th, 2008 4:59 pm ET

We have moved past this stage of history.

Cool down people.

Obama Has Substance   August 13th, 2008 4:58 pm ET

Raymond Duke, and sick people like you are not totally to be blamed for your hate of Obama. Hillary and Bill Clintons fueled a lot of this hate. They said a lot of hateful and untruthful things about Obama. They know that there are supporters like
Raymond and many others who have built-in hatred for people of color and they need to talk to these people and tell them who Obama really is.
Hillary knows who Obama the really Obama is and can do much better to re-introduce him her socall 18 millions. I just hope you guys can help to bring about peace for American. Please Raymond and others like you let us live in peace and unity.
Stop the hate Now. You know that Obama win the
Election fair and square. He was respectful and treated Hillary and Bill with much praise and honor. So please stop the foolishnes talk now.. It is
okay if you don't want to vote for Obama because he is black but please be true to yourself and say so. Let us have honest and fair
discussion about the facts and the candidates. And may the best man wins the election. I pray that God will work in all of our lives to be people of good character and honesty in all we do and say.

WILL YA'LL LISTEN TO YOURSELFS!!! There is absoultly nothing saying that this had anything to do with any political party or had anything to do with politics. Almost all of ya'll on here is so quick to judge but think about it. This could have been a dispute over anything and nothing has been anounced. It is very very sad that most of you are just tring to say its because he was a racist or a hillary supporter or a republican. Instead we should all just be saying a prayer for Mr Gwatney.

ClintonDem4Cynthia08   August 13th, 2008 4:53 pm ET

The biggest cover-up is of Obama's Islamofascist connections, in particular his close relationship with Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whose other best buddy is Moammar Ghaddafi. Odinga calls himself an Anglican Christian, but signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Muslims leaders where he first declares that he is actually a Muslim (stating that Islam is the only true religion) then promises to impose sharia law if elected. (The agreement became public knowledge when Muslim leaders decided to brag about it in late 2007.)

Given that Obama was raised Muslim (and has lied about it), the fact that his closest political confidant has been exposed as a secret Islamofascist ought to be front page news across the country.

ROSE JUSTWONDERING   August 13th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

leon   August 13th, 2008 4:50 pm ET

I feel sorry for the tragedy.

However in a different point I hope that the Convention select a new Chairman and get ride of the stupid Howard Dean and all the BS behind him. He is mostly responsible for the division we face now in the Democratic Party and he is leading the party and the country towards another disaster.

To all Obama's supporters this is a free country and even when Hillary accepted that she is not the nominee that does not mean that we have to follow because PUMA movement is more than supporting Hillary it is a demonstration that we do not accept and will not support Senator Obama who is a clear average politician formed in the corrupted school of politics from Chicago. He is an average politician that is already showing his lack of good judgement and his lack of moral values to stand firm on many critical positions. He changes his opinion ans where he stands in order to have votes and get elected. So there are plenty of Democrats who do not care abuot Obama and believe that the DNC is moving away from the principles of the party

Milwaukee WI   August 13th, 2008 4:47 pm ET

I pray for Gwatney’s family as I pray for America.

America’s true colors are beginning to show and will be in full bloom this fall and don’t nobody blame Obama. I am not talking about red/white/blue and I am not talking about the autumn colors either. Some have hidden behind so called religious values, others behind freedom of expression but it all point to one thing, hate and we all need to look in the mirror before things get worse.

anonymous   August 13th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

Once again, the hate mongers are at it. We're talking about human life here! And, Michael, for your misinformed statement, the shooter was not captured, he was killed!

Scott L   August 13th, 2008 4:46 pm ET

"we commend the courageous and speedy action of law enforcement officials in apprehending the suspect."

If a dem at that party was carrying a gun, maybe someone could have stopped him sooner than the cops. And did I hear a dem thanking the police for shooting and killing this suspect? Wow…sounds like we need a stronger military might than they may have thought. Dems would have tried to negotiate with the killer first…bad idea.

The right to bear arms is still alive and well in the good old U.S.A.!

I wonder if your country will ever realize the days of the wild west are over it's now the 21st century. The James gang no longer rules the west and sooner or later everyone will be able to put down their guns and resolve differences logically and diplomatically.

sorry diplomacy is not in bush's vercabulry…

time for change- Dallas TX   August 13th, 2008 4:37 pm ET

And we wonder why we are so divided…it is disgusting that some of the people posting try to make this a Conservative vs Liberal issue. People that make comments like that are part of the problem, yet they are so blinded that they will never see nor admit it…

On a side note…go ahead and try to take my gun Maggie! If we did not have the immigration issues and resulting gang issues (theft, vandalism, etc.) many of us would not feel the need to have guns to protect ourselves and property. Our worthless congress (both parties) has done nothing to further inmmigration reform because they are a bunch of cowards that only care about getting re-elected rather than what is good for the citizens.

Vigla   August 13th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

I'm afraid some people will try to politicize anything. Howard Dean works with this man who was brutally shot by a crazed gunman. This gunman was killed, although I would have loved to hear his reasoning. My guess it's some nut-job who is afraid we're becoming too socialist for his taste.

BTW, Howard Dean had NOTHING to do with Hillary's loss. In fact, he did EVERYTHING in his power to stay out of it. This Hillary obsession needs to end. Let's move on…

Ivonne   August 13th, 2008 4:36 pm ET

My prayers go out to Bill Gwatney, his family, and frends. So much senseless violence!!

A big thanks to Mr. Gwatney for working so hard for the Democratic Party in Arkansas…although our presumed Presidential candidate has yet to see fit to visit Arkansas. Arkansas is a small state but there are many dedicated people like Mr. Gwatney (and the Clintons) who work hard to boost the Democratic Party and the ideals of all Democrats. Arkansas may only have a few electorial votes…but sometimes a few is all it takes to make the difference between winning and losing.

California Gold   August 13th, 2008 4:17 pm ET

Are we so angry that we can not stop long enough to consider how the victim's life has been forever changed? We are a nation that values human life, not like other countries who see people as a disposable commodity. This should be a time when we are reminded of this fact and offer positive thoughts and prayers for the victim.

Ms. ANGIE…….

You are a little too self centered. A man was shot….and you're on here whining about being sick of Hillary supporters.

Typical Obama nut.

Thoughts and prayers to Mr Gwatney and his familiy.

Brooke   August 13th, 2008 4:16 pm ET

This shooting is a tragedy and has no place in American politics. And, anyone on either side who blames the "right" or the "left" for this should be ashamed of themselves.

Blueray98   August 13th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

No doubt it was an Obama thug trying to murder a Hillary Clinton supporter/delegate.

BTW, "ANGIE" — Hillary ran a great campaign. However, having almost 100% positive media coverage really helps. It sure helped Obama/Soetoro, not to mention that the DNC elitists were also behind him. Oh, and did I mention all of the PAC fund money from Nancy Pelosi to all of the superdelegates that endorsed him? Not only was he selected, NOT elected, but he was also BOUGHT AND PAID FOR.

Millions of us former died-in-the-wool Democrats will be voting Republican for the first time in ours lives. Enjoy the Obama/Soetoro party while it lasts!

Monica for Obama in Indiana   August 13th, 2008 4:15 pm ET

We heard Howard Dean on the radio, this afternoon. He expressed deep concern and sympathy for the Party Chair, and his family as we all did.

Love your liberals   August 13th, 2008 4:11 pm ET

You know, I've said for a while now that this irrational hatred of "liberals" among the lunatic fringe on the right is becoming a real issue. It needs to be diagnoses as its own mental disorder. To disagree with someone is one thing, but these people just have an intense visceral hatred for what they perceive as liberals that is just irrational and borderline pyschotic. It's the same reason that man gave for going into that church and shooting people just a few weeks ago. He said his life was screwed up and he couldn't find a job because of liberals. These people are just mean and nasty. They sit around and listen to the hatred of Limbaugh and Hannity all day (while liberals are actually out spending time with friends, having a good time and enjoying life) and they feel totally justified in this kind of irrational hatred. And you PUMA people are pretty much just as bad. You just use outlandish fabricated lies to attack instead of guns

rhoward   August 13th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Evidently some of the people on here didn't actually read the article or they would know it was about someone being shot. Anyway, I join with those others who wish the victim of this senseless act a speedy recovery.

fella from Chicago   August 13th, 2008 4:03 pm ET

Personal or politically motivated. Hope law enforcement discovers the motive. Unfortunately violence is part of politics, in this country as well as abroad; has been and always will be. Think the Secret Service isn't praying that Senator Obama isn't elected President. If he is elected, being the first black President will expand the bull's eye target on the President more so than ever before in the history of the Office. Wonder what Lloyd's of London thinks of Senator Obama's chances? This is politics in America, this is politics throughout the world. Politics is ugly and sometimes violent. Politicians whatever their party affiliation are brave individual's. I know I couldn't do it.

Laura   August 13th, 2008 3:57 pm ET

I hope Mr. Gwatney will be alright. Other reports are stating that the gunman is dead. So we may never know what in the world possessed him to perform such a horrible act.

It doesn't matter who your candidate is in this type of situation. We are and should be human beings first.

Laura,
Boston, MA

Michelle, PA   August 13th, 2008 3:52 pm ET

How can some of you turn this tragedy into an Obama vs. Clinton drama. A man was shot. Disgusting.

STILL FOR HILL   August 13th, 2008 3:48 pm ET

Nobody's fault but Hillary's own she lost the race…. lol… Obama's candidacy has been in play since the 2004 democratic convention…. Let's all get real.

I think it is funny that the National Inquirer outscoops CNN, FOX and everyone else on the John Edwards story. This election was fixed from the beginning and Obama would not be our candidate if he would have been vetted.

Most of you are like your candidate Obama, not an original thought in your head. Most of your talking points are what you learned last night on TV listening to biased journalism. Do everyone a favor, turn the channel once in a while and listen to both sides. Then make your decision.

As for me, I voting for a record. John McCain has a real record of working with Democrats. Obama has a speech.

nuff said.

Please and Thank You   August 13th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

What a fitting picture of the man who is at the center of the political s.. storm created by telling Americans, that only 1/2 the votes of one states certified election count and oh, don't bother registering Senator Obama in the state of Michigan, Howard 'Yeehaw' Dean will ensure you get 1/2 of their 1/2 of votes as well.

Unfortunately attitude begets violance and for a Democratically advertised country, we've reverted to allowing a self choosen few tell us what's best for us.

While this act of violence is extremely unfortunate, while Mr. Yeehaw Dean, Pelosi and Reid have worked so very hard these past months to pick the Democratic Candidate, while Hillary Clinton has focused on issues IMPORTANT to the American Public….then they tried to stop the DEMOCRATIC process from completing.

By the way Mr. Dean - that process completes with the conclusion of the upcoming convention..is it you're objective to now 'DICTATE' to the delegate representatives to vote for Senator Obama? It's bad enough that Bill Richardson, amungst other 'super' delegates have gone against the popular vote during the primaries and endorsed Obama.

Please - allow the American Voters popular vote voices to be heard this convention and thank you for returning determing Democracy to the democratic process of allowing the American public to be heard!

KATE   August 13th, 2008 3:39 pm ET

My thoughts are with the family of the victim. I hope this shooting is not politically or hate motivated. That would be a dark spot on this country's claim to democracy.
