McCain's adviser said the GOP candidate has 15 years of experience on Russia policy.
McCain's adviser said the GOP candidate has 15 years of experience on Russia policy.

NEWARK, New Jersey (CNN) – John McCain's top foreign policy adviser briefed reporters Tuesday on his candidate's policy towards Russia and Georgia, noting that McCain and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili are friends that have been speaking throughout the conflict "to exchange daily updates about what's going on."

The adviser, Randy Scheunemann, also confirmed a report that McCain and Saakashvili enjoyed a day of water sports in the summer of 2006.

"I can confirm that Sen. McCain and President Saakashvili were jet-skiing on the Black Sea together," he said.

Reporters spent several minutes asking Scheunemann, a former lobbyist for the government of Georgia, to firm up details on McCain's comments regarding the crisis that has unfolded in recent days.

Asked about Barack Obama's statements on the Georgia situation, Scheunemann accused the Democrat of lacking experience on the matter, saying his record consists only of a handful of paper statements, most of which related to matters of loose nuclear material. But McCain's record on Georgia and Russia, he argued, runs deep.

"There's a depth of knowledge, a breadth of knowledge, and an extent of historical experience that doesn't compare between the two on Russia policy," Scheunemann said. "You can't compare a 15-year historical record to three or four statements over the course of 15 months."

Scheunemann repeatedly stressed McCain's position that Russia's actions in South Ossetia and Abkhazia are without merit.

"What he has said is whatever tensions and hostilities preceded the Russian invasion, nothing justified the Russian invasion," he said.

Scheunemann said that Western leaders are now coming around to positions that McCain "has raised for years," in particular his calls for Russia to be expelled from the Group of Eight and for NATO to reconsider its decision to not extend membership to Georgia.

He said "nobody is talking about military action" against Russia. He also indicated that U.S. troops wouldn't likely be part of an international peacekeeping force in the separatist regions.

No lack of experience ya think? Obama hasn't had an original proposal come out of his mouth since being on the campaign trail. The only thing he proposes is Universal Health Care that will leave out what 20 million people so how does that make it universal. LOL People had a chance to vote for someone who can think for herself as the Dem. nominee but they liked the cool dude better. This happened with George W. to they thought of him as sitting down and having a beer with the guy vs. picking someone that can actually lead. Look where we are after 8 years. LOL At least with McCain he has some smarts and original ideas.

Putin's sudden surge in power started right after "Jet-Pilot" took office and has accelerated ever since. Why? Because he knows the "Connecticut Cowboy" doesn't know how to make a decision or deliver an idea. It's the difference between being an experienced soldier or a weekend warrior.

The United States is in big trouble......... neither candidate is a good choice for our failing economy..... OBAMA with his racist wife & pasture........ You can't tell me OBAMA isn't racist when his pasture of 20+ years is spouting stuff out like he was... I would think after 20+ years you would get a sense of who a person is....MCCAIN with his desire to stay in Iraq..... MCCAIN is essentially like voting for another 4 years of BUSH which is a nightmare and a whole other topic...

First, Why isn't McCain making this statement for himself? You don't see Obama's foreign policy adviser speaking for him all the time.
Second, the adviser is a LOBBYIST for Georgia.

I wouldn't trust on someone who befriends a leader who razed tens of villages and kills civilians in Ossetia....

I guess people don't remember that Georgia strike first that zone and from then this terrible episode began....

No one is good in a war, neither Gerogia or Russia, but I guess some people has missed the point of what Georgia did

Internet Argument Winner   August 13th, 2008 11:15 am ET

1. Georgians shelled sleeping S.Osetian town in the middle of the night, killing estimated 2000 civilians (Russian citizen mostly), many children and women.

2. Russians attacked Georgians and moved into their territory to destroy their ability to do this in the future.

3. McCain: "We are all Georgians now"

Hmmmmm......

McCain jet skiing? Maybe on a jet hospital bed or in a jet ambulance!!!

wow   August 13th, 2008 11:13 am ET

What a bunch of rabid crazies. You all bash McCain for laying out a multi-pronged, multilateral approach to the situation, and you all either can't read, or you've been so brainwashed that you refuse to listen to his plan, instead brazenly lying about his approach. And you say he's not experienced enough, or because he went jet skiing he's not qualified to make a judgment on this situation? I don't know any Americans that have not been jet skiing before. How is that out of touch? And if you want to talk lobbyists, I challenge you to look at Obama's closest advisors, the donations to his campaign and DNC. Obama and the DNC have taken more lobbyist money than McCain or the GOP. Check the facts people, they actually do matter more than the communist images that flash across the news media of sen. obama.

the heart of the matter   August 13th, 2008 11:13 am ET

this morning on cnn the Ga. Pres thanked McCain for his sentiments, however it was clear that he's not looking for talk–and further, where's all the big russian friendship and influence that bush touts he has? odd-russia says they stopped but CNN reporters on the ground wsith russian troops clearly prove thats just not true! i find it very disturbing that the MCCain camp see this as a political gain for them–its disgusting behavior to say the least-however–this pattern of saying we support these people and then what?? its no wonder that bush's current and McCain's potenital future policies make our country look like fools!! hw did the current admin & Mccain or the armed services comittee(oh thats right mccain doesnt attend those meetings anyway) not see the buildup coming? cuz why with all that exprience–and ya think we need 4-8 more years of this????

Xavier   August 13th, 2008 11:12 am ET

If McCain is so experienced why hasnt he learned to keep his mouth shut and not make promises he cant keep. The Georgian president called him out, and what can he do about it as senator? NOT A THING! McCain likes to talk trash on Obama, but McCain is the one that is all smoke and mirrors as far as I can see.

We don't need a president who can be manipulated by small countries like Georgia to enter another World War... isn't it obvious that Saakashvili is trying to spin his terrible miscalculation into an existential threat to the Entire Free World? He tweaked the nose of the Russian bear, and now is running to Uncle Sam to protect him. And McCain is more than willing to play into that game.

What are you going to do McCain? Send a "surge" of American troops in to fight Russia and ignite World War 3? All your big talk about being Georgians and stopping the Russian Empire is being called as a bluff.

We don't need belligerent rhetoric or promises of more war now. We're tired of the same rush to war of the Bush years. Let's mop up what we started in Iraq and Afghanistan first. I say we get more creative in solving world crises, instead of sending in the brave men and women of our armed forces every time we want something done in the world.

Republican for Obama   August 13th, 2008 11:11 am ET

Who would I rather vote for? I respect John McCain... But I can't vote for a Republican this time 'round. The main issues we have now, we've had over the past few years, or longer.. Jobs going overseas, the Iraq war, Energy issues, Health Care concerns. I'd be more concerned with why, with someone that has had so much experience and been there for so long – has it taken till now to talk about what we're going to do to fix things? These are things that should have been issues – with all McCains experience – years ago. Mr. McCain, also, please don't speak for me. You are not my President. Had Obama said anything like ' I speak for all American's', I would have seen another Britney/Paris commercial about how he thinks he's 'all that'. Funny how its fine for McCain to do it though. Too bad McCain hasn't spoken out as loudly or strongly about things going on in Darfur. Oh yeah, there's no oil there so why should it matter? I'm TIRED of it all. Obama may not have the same experience, but may have some new ideas – because the old ones certainly aren't working. It's a CHANGE I'm willing to put my money on this time. We need to make changes and make them quickly.

I am so glad that McCain has the stage on this one, and everyone can see how foolish and idiotic he looks announcing that we are all Georgian! Who provoked whom?

Obama wants diplomacy to be exercised before physical combative agression is implemented. Isn't that common sense thinking?

McCain want to stay, if possible, 100 years in a war that has killed and maimed our sons are daughters. Many more are psychologically depressed when they are discharged from the military. The country is financially drained by two wars currently, do we need another war?
I think McCain needs some brain food to think before he speaks. We need PEACE NOT MORE WAR!

Laidetea   August 13th, 2008 11:10 am ET

THE MAN WITH EXPERIENCE AND JUDGEMENT TO BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT.

THE BUSH TWINS : GEORGE & JOHN   August 13th, 2008 11:09 am ET

Exactly what "experience" does McBush have concerning Georgia ?. The jet ski experience he shared with the president of Georgia in the Black Sea perhaps ?.
Don't we have enough problems here at home to worry about ?. And what about Iraq ?. McBush concern yourself with whats going on here at home. Make a solid stance on something concerning the American people. In fact for the good of the American people just go ahead and concede the race to Sen. Obama so he can move on with repairing the damage done by your daddy Cheney and your twin George.

Joe Kiloz   August 13th, 2008 11:08 am ET

Obama's sheepish response is what we can all expect as his foreign policy.

McCain, an honorable man who understands commitment to our allies, measured his response and responded in kind. Think for a moment he is talking about one of our major allies who had 2,000 + troops alongside ours in Iraq.

McCain has stated, just like the rest of us wish, that peace is our goal, diplomacy is first.

Nevertheless, this is the world that we live in, and there are certain attitudes that diplomacy alone cannot change. In this case, the anarchical ways of Mr. Putin will not be "negotiated away." That is the reality.

This is one of the fundamental differences between the candidates. McCain has the judgment and experience to know when and how to respond to crisis, Obama does not.

non black nonwhite   August 13th, 2008 11:08 am ET

I really don't believe one word that McCain says he is the biggest flip-floper of all. he makes Hillary's sniper fire seem like nothing.

I think McBush still thinks that we are in a cold war, he probably is unaware when it ended. he has lost his mind, no good judgment from him.

Sue   August 13th, 2008 11:08 am ET

Experience, what experience? Please...someone who thinks McCain is experience explain to me where.

Think First - then vote   August 13th, 2008 11:08 am ET

If John McCain knew so much (or remembered so much about Georgia), then perhaps he can explain why the first 3 paragraphs of his remarks were lifted directly from Wikipedia!

While I'm glad he's mastered "the google" – I'm not at all impressed by his handling of things. Kudos to Pres. Sarkozy of France who flew in and is actually trying to do something – as well as the other European presidents.

But I'm not at all impressed with Condi and Bush and McCain who have nothing more to offer than very empty words and empty threats while thousands are being killed. Obama had pointed out the problems in South Ossentia a month ago – when McCain's only interest would have been what deals he could cut for a jet-skiing buddy? Or business deals for his lobbyist/campaign advisor.

Alice Brinkley   August 13th, 2008 11:08 am ET

Everything still gonna be the same if the Arizona McBush is elected President. Nothing is going to be different than the Bush and Chenny's failed Policy. Nice McCain, so you want a war with Russia which by the way would crush us. Look people, a lot of the media is portraying Georgia as the poor victim here. If you look at the conflict Georgia has been the one starting most of this. Russia is trying to stop "ethnic cleansing" by the Georgian military. So please, fellow Americans read up on info before you say Russia is doing something bad. They are trying to stop killings. As one can see the Georgian president (who is pretty crazy) stated that the Russians are going to attack the capital. The CNN reporter who is riding with the Russian troops stated they aren't even headed that way.

Check your sources fellow Americans before jumping on the "Destroy Russia and protect Georgia" bandwagon.

One of the qualities of a great nation is depth of the wisdom reflected by its people. Gauging the arguments for and against this or that candidate in this blog really scares any intelligent reader. All the vital attutides of a leader are being trashed here, its makes any sensible person reading this blog to wonder, with a bunch of idots supporting their candidate at all cost, who needs a wise leader. Who needs an experienced leader if the people are only interested nothing.

For generations we heard phrases like: experience is the best teacher, tested and proven to be true, well done is better than well said, look at his record. We look at experience when hiring people in any position. Why are we trashing people with experice and forcing someone into position whci really needs an old hand. We tried that with Bush, look where we are in the world today. You call senator McCain all the bad names in the book, but he is the right leader of this country at this time given the choices.

Senator Obama is a gamble and he does not even a stand on any issue. We need a leader with strong convictions, not a wind chaser.

John McCain has been the only one telling us of the dangers that Russia and Putin still pose. Russia/Putin for the last several years have been pulling the strings of Europe due to their need for Russia's natural gas and oil. this is just a power play by Russia to maintain/increase their control of the worlds energy reserves. Just like what they are trying to do int he Artic by claiming large areas as theirs for oil and natural gas exploration. Face the facts the Cold War is back on!!!! and only a true visionary like john McCain can see thru the "red curtain" that Putin's is trying to throw over the world!!!!

We need to be putting troops into Georgia and the Ukraine to be a trip wire to stop the Russian’s from reforming the old Soviet Block…

um….McWar would just attack, Obama might talk to Russia and not start WW3"

So tell me. Would YOU be willing to go try talking an ex-KGB leader into halting all hostilities. The KGB thrived off of this stuff. Chances are he would just laugh in the diplomats face that went over there. It's sad but true. Ideally every situation could be worked out diplomatically, but that is not the case. For a short list of those that simple reasoning would not work with is, Iran, Al Qaeda, North Korea, ex-KGB prime minister Vladimir Putin, Syria, and Hugo Chavez when he's having a bad day.

In the end though, neither of these candidates gets to do anything so anything that comes out of this event will be pure speculation. It's up to Bush still to handle the situation, but he's taking the easy route and letting the United Nations do it's thing (or lack thereof)

Wow CNN you closed the first article after only 23 responses. I guess you do have to go to Fox News for fair and balanced reporting. I do however find it very telling that the Georgian leader opened up to McCain but never even mentioned Obama, that in itself is very, very telling.

Leadership and experience first and foremost

McCain 09

Chuck, Euigene Oregon.   August 13th, 2008 10:54 am ET

Give me a break, McCain does not speak for me. I am not Georgian, never will be. If McCain think he is going to go head to toe with Russia he has another thing coming. The American people and congress will not allow such a stupid stunt. Our military can not support it's self right now with its current missions. What is McCain going to do, institute the draft? If so it will take a year or more to induct, train, equip those new troops? Very silly on his part to take the position he has. Sorry, NO WW III for this country. Obama had this one right again. Europe has it right. McCain has it all wrong, even Europe as a whole take a position different from McCain. So really who is wrong when you take into consideration the world response vs McCains response. I rest my case.

Tom. B   August 13th, 2008 10:54 am ET

Not just Georgia, Obama doesnt have experience in any area.

GrandMa   August 13th, 2008 10:53 am ET

On August 12, McBush had town hall meeting on Philadelphia. I just want to let you know he always make fun of Senator Obama, which said on Germany “citizen of the world”, and also questioning senator Obama love of the Unites State which is stupid and unacceptable. He did not do nor had the flag pin on his speech and not call him self-citizen of Georgia but call all of us. McBush I just want to tell you I am US citizen and proud of it you can be Georgia’s citizen since you got the money from that country for your campaign not us the people of USA.

AZ Senior   August 13th, 2008 10:53 am ET

what Mccain's policy over for Georgia...go to war with russia!!!...seems like the only policy GOP leaders can boast about is how they went for Wars that killed thousands of American Soldires

Shari, NY   August 13th, 2008 10:52 am ET

The same lines over and over. The LP is stuck on the turntable – time for and IPOD!

Does Sen. McCain want to throw in the towel? Can this be an attempt to sabotage his own chances because the little train just cain't anymore (not a typo). Too much pressure, and Georgia asking for deeds and not words is causing him grief. Poor guy!

eye's of the wise   August 13th, 2008 10:51 am ET

Oh they are good buddies , that why Mccain immediately came out and blame the whole thing on Russia without knowing that detail's of what was going on, that is very irresponsible and war mongerish

caron   August 13th, 2008 10:51 am ET

McCain scares me. He's like one of thos Chihuahuas who does a lot of barking but then he personally won't be able to back it up – he would force our military to go and cover his stupidity.

M. Winners, Mesa, AZ   August 13th, 2008 10:50 am ET

Jeez, what did you expect Scheunemann to say – he was on Georgia's payroll as a registered agent! Now he's McLame's foreign policy advisor.

Come on America – see thru McLame for what he is – a war mongering, pandering, hypocritical liar who will say and do anything to anybody just to get elected.

McLame has experience all right – in how to screw this country using fear, smear, mock and lie tactics.

PS: I'm an American, not a Georgian as McLame says we all are...

Barack Obama is Our 44th president! YES WE CAN !   August 13th, 2008 10:49 am ET

And while you are spending your time trying to find ways to critize Sen. Obama for using good judgment here and abroad, you better do your homework and take a closer look at McCain and start critizing him because he definitely lacks experience in terms of exacting good judgment to lead this country and restore America's image abroad.

It's definitely time for REAL change in Washington, it's time to elect Barack Obama for president !

Lost (maybe) in CNN Moderation   August 13th, 2008 10:49 am ET

What's interesting to me about this whole situation is that the French are the ones who seem to be making the most progress in this situation. You know, the same country that all you Republicans critized Obama for visiting and the same country that seemed to agree with Obama on foreign policy.

BTW I don't think having one of your advisers lobby for Georgia is makes you objective. Then again, I'm sure we can find a lobbyist from Russia on McCains team. Afterall, lobbying seems to be a job requirement to work in the McCain campaign.

I hear all of you Liberal democrats bad mouthing him, I predict after the conventions are over your shallow man will be on the losing end and McCain will will be elected president.

Cathy   August 13th, 2008 10:46 am ET

I love how McCain criticized Obama acting to presidential when in Berlin and stating we are "fellow citizens of the world," and now McCain is basically doing the same thing..but even worse..speaking on behalf of all Americans.

McCain first response to any crisis "dictator like"…and basically threatens war if you don't do as I say (pound…pound). McCain thinks everyone should listen to America. MCCAIN WE HAVE NO MORE TROOPS FOR ANOTHER WAR….!!!! Obama is more rational and waits to get all the facts and speak to the parties effect by the crisis before he issues a position.

This just shows that McCain will throw America into as many wars as he possible could….(and people don't think McCain would implement the draft…)

Will in Richmond, VA   August 13th, 2008 10:46 am ET

All that 'depth of knowledge' you supposedly have didn't help you keep your foot out of your mouth, McCain.

You are a sad, sad excuse for a leader. All this hard talk about what we should do and nothing to back it up, NOR are you providing any diplomatic solutions yourself.

Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan are kittens compared to the Soviets and after what I've heard out of you this week, I am even more convinced that you are not the right person for the job.

tj in fla   August 13th, 2008 10:45 am ET

This same advisor was a paid lobbyist for Georgia until recently. What gives him creditability to criticize? The Maverick's sabre rattling certainly helped to defuse this situation. If we want 4 more years of this false bravado, let's by allmeans elect McCain.

Reading the comments made after reading the article is simply mind blowing. It scares me that you people are responsible for voting in the next President. Instead of a heated debate based on facts held in a mature manner it's more like a high school cat fight in here. I am going to try to convince myself that the majority of Americans are not as asinine as the people making the comments above and an informed decision will be made.

When you get upset for being called names like mindless drones or Obamabots, consider the impression you leave behind with the type of statements you make. I for one will be voting for the candidate with experience and common sense who didn't use celebrity type measures to become known which caused the reaction everyone should have expected by doing it that way.

I do not believe that the details of Russia's role in the is conflict has been disclosed to us. The terms of their cease fire are fairly mild and it does not appear that Russia is in a mad power grab which is what I was led to believe. It actually sounds like Russia over reacted to succession movement. And why do these people want to break off

Erik   August 13th, 2008 10:37 am ET

This "lack of experience" wheeze is growing tiresome. There is no specific experience to adequately prepare somebody for the office of President. It's about vision, character, statesmanship, and the ability to inspire others to make America better. This snide, blinky old man doesn't have what it takes.

Obamalism   August 13th, 2008 10:37 am ET

What do you expect? McCain is NOT our sitting president. He can't make the decisions that he wants. Parroting the role of the president while only being a candidate is Obama's thing.

NOTICE: You pitiful UN loving fools out there...where is the UN? huh? Where? Sitting on their butts just like our democrats in congress!!!!...as usual.

Elect someone who knows how to make a decision. THAT is what true leaders do.

Marc   August 13th, 2008 10:37 am ET

McCain showed his support for Georgia and chastised Russia for their aggressioin, just like Obama did, albeit days later. I don't see where you guys are getting that he wanted to start another war. I think it's the Georgian president who's losing his cool when he should be trying diplomacy on his own with Russia and appealing to the UN for intervention.

james   August 13th, 2008 10:37 am ET

Mccain does not have experience at being the one making the decisions. Just because he's old as a fossil, doesn't mean he's experienced. It's about one's judgment. What if all his experience had been negative?
Would you want a bad doctor with 50 years experience who's lost 50% of his patients on the operating table, or a newly educated, steady nerves, level headed doctor that knows exactly what he's doing?

Chris from NY   August 13th, 2008 10:33 am ET

Threats are but the only thing any American can make at this time. Be it president Bush or the presidential candidates. For anyone to critize Obama on this Georigia issue is seeking for recognition than what the issue requires. Experience is not wisdom. Otherwise people will not do same thing over and over again. McCain and Bush are singing the same song that hey have sang for may years with same result. But Sarkozy sang a song yesterday that was diffrent from what we heard from Bush and McCain but similar to the position Obama had maitained all along . We can't be everything to the world but to ourselves first. Others can help and they are willing to do so if given the opportunity.

What's going on in Georgia is not going to stop the bank from foreclosing my house next month.

Oh yes, it was the same neocon "experience" that brought us Iraq. I think we can do with out that kind of experience.

I'd rather go with someone who has the experience of using his head and his education and most of all his experience living life as a regular American who knows what it means to push one's way through school, live on a budget and prepare one's children for school and life. That kind of a person will be much more thoughtful about tossing America's treasure in human capital and purse away.

I know everyone remember the other gunslinger that got us in the position this nation is in. McShame would be a paper president with a laimbrain cabinet surrounded by idiots. This nation would be the laughing stock of the world that has already lost it's credtability if he is elected. " The fall of the American Empire",sounds familliar. The poeple of this nation need to be taken in different direction. Check out his military record. He is not a hero. He was a collaberator with the enemy at the Hanoi Hilton. He was one of the Keating 5. "Oh" you remember the keating 5 don't you. I will refresh your memory. Lincoln Savings and Loan. The taxpayers had to fork out over 3 Billon Dollars for that fiasko. Don't you remember him coming home from VIet Nam and not liking how his wife looked after her auto accident. He immediately started fooling around. He had a problem keeping his pants zipped up. He dumped Carol by offering to pay her medical bills for life and bought a condo on the beach. 1980 Was a good year for McShame. How about that for a rag to riches story. "Obama 08".

The man has no clear ideas of his own. She and the rest of us wanted Obama put on the spot first to show he doesn't have a clue as to what to do. He was allowed to second speak Clinton ,at all of the debates, until he had Hillary's platform down pat. It was a sham from start to finish, I tell you!

MMN-Milwaukee WI   August 13th, 2008 10:23 am ET

Both McCain and Bush know empty words because they use them a lot.

Bush’s Russia policy is staring at Putin’s eyes to see his soul and he called him a good man.

McCain’s Georgia policy is jet skiing with Saakashvili and Scheunemann, a former lobbyist for the government of Georgia probably reminds McCain what to say before he utters “Eduard Shevardnadze” instead of Saakashvili.

McCain-as-foreign-policy-authority is a myth; McCain has shown time and time again that, far from being an expert when it comes to foreign policy, he is frequently - and dangerously - clueless.

CNN,

Why you are not posting my views. Is it because you don't won't me to tell the truth about the media keeping up tensions between Obama and Hilary camp. Or is it because if Clinton don't give Obama her full support, that her political future will be over. If Obama lose or win without the Clintons full support, she will lose her Senate race in the future. She needs Obama supporters and we will not rally around Hilary for her Senate seat if the Clinton supporters don't rally around Obama!! Now that's the bottom line. If Clinton wants to play politics, then let the games begin.

The Europeans handled it just fine with diplomacy. What I want to know is the substance of McCain's diplomatic skills. My way or we'll throw you out of the G8? I'd like to see McCain get the votes from Europe to throw Russia out of the G8...lol, McCain is naive.

Dave in Boston   August 13th, 2008 10:17 am ET

I'm very happy to know that John McCain was out jetskiing with the President of Georgia while Barack Obama was too busy working in the Senate on behalf of his constituents that sent him there.

Greg, Atlanta   August 13th, 2008 10:17 am ET

Seeing how Saakashvili provoked this conflict with the Russians, I can see why he and McCain are friends...they are both war mongerers.

David in Virginia   August 13th, 2008 10:16 am ET

The only experience "Bang Bang Shoot'em Up Mccain" has with Georgia is reciting Wikipedia. He also claims to be friends with the president of Georgia but he can't pronounce his name? Hmmmmmmm........

I thought the GOP came out all guns blazing at Obama during his tour. Obama was labeled with things like celebrity, citizen of the world, not paying attention to problem at home. Honestly, it is so sad to see the GOP come up with this BS. Now will it be right to call McMoron citizen of the world or not paying attention to matters at home. I think the GOP are frustrated, satanic, confused, deceptive, arrogant, dishonest, angry, bitter people. These guys are nothing but "ANIMALS IN HUMAN SKIN"

mel   August 13th, 2008 10:13 am ET

McCain, you will put anything in thicker just for all american to see

I don't think you are being honest with the voter. Voter be careful

Jet skiing on the Black Sea? Now there is some foreign policy experience we can count on. If you are insane vote McCain

Dick/NH   August 13th, 2008 10:13 am ET

Why was the Georgian president attacking the area in dispute LAST WEEK??? Did he actually think that Putin (still the REAL leader) would not retaliate? Or did he think the U.S. would come to his aid ?
Maybe the "wrinkly white-haired guy" would lead the charge on his jet-ski?
BTW, "wrinkly white-haired guy" , it was very presumptuous of you to speak for "all Americans"....let me make it clear that YOU DO NOT SPEAK FOR ME!!!

lol   August 13th, 2008 10:13 am ET

obama had to "adjust" his original response on the russia/georgia conflict, because as usual he didn't know what the hell was happening. just like he did in the debates with hillary, he stole mccain's ideas and ran with them. inexperienced, empty suit, hot air, that's obama.

steve   August 13th, 2008 10:12 am ET

This is coming from Randy schuemann ,Mclama`s Foreign policy adviser who is a lobbyist with the georgian government.
Schuemann and the mccains gave this georgian folks a false sense of security that made them to start this conflict in the first place.
Now the Georgian president would want some of thier money back because Mccain and his henchmen could not protect them as the taught.

Barack O'blah-blah = World Chaos   August 13th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Clever sound bites and flowery oratory taken from history will NOT lead this country out of war, the energy crisis, or terrorist risks – it will only cause us to stumble and bumble our way into chaos. Barack Obama is NOT fit to be the President – not even close

Linda from Prescott AZ   August 13th, 2008 10:12 am ET

Senator McCain has no right to speak for this country. He is a war monger who thinks all situations are best served by rattling a sabre and threats. Hello, where the hell are we going to get troops to send anywhere, remember...we are sending them to Iraq for the next 100 years.
And why are we being lectured by his lobbyist advisor

Besides tough talk that baits Russia, what is McCain's plan for stability?? How is he going to help out his old chum? The Georgia Pres today said he wants to see Deeds, not words from McCain. Well it turns out McCain doesn't have anything to offer. He was speaking out of turn.

While Johnny and his good buddy were on jet skis in the black sea, did John ask him about the separatists regions?? Did Johnny ask him about attacking the Russian peacekeepers?? Apparently Johnny didn't give his good buddy any good advice.

Ridiculous   August 13th, 2008 10:07 am ET

So now jet skiing counts for experience and because you talk to another president on the phone counts for experience...i think its even better if you're not friends so it doesnt clout your judgement. Even though it's realistic to support Georgia becuase Russia is being unfair but jet skiing with the one of the presidents definitely disqualifies you from being "unbiased"

Veteran for Obama   August 13th, 2008 10:07 am ET

McCain is using Georgia and Russia another political stunt. Just like his campaign has said if there is a terrorist attack it will benefit McCain. Since that hasn't happed this is settling for second best.

If you want another military draft vote for McCain. He loves war and their will be alot of it.

Smith   August 13th, 2008 10:07 am ET

James Pagani   August 13th, 2008 10:06 am ET

It sounds like John Mcacque [A.K.A McWARMONGER] told his jetski- body to provoque russians so he can get a war story to run on. Now he thinks all americans have have to become georgians. What a poor jugement!

Proud Army and Navy Mom

If you had any sense of reality, you would understand that war is not the answer. It's ok to be a proud mother, but don't let it distort the fact that war actually kills people. Being a military mom doesn't mean that we should be using acts of murder as a means to solve problems around the world!

McShame is a opportunist. He was dieing for something to kick off adroad so he could boast about his leadership abilities. He shows up as trying to be a gunslinger of a super power. Don't you remember him coming home from VIet Nam and not liking how his looked after her auto accident. He immediately started fooling around. He had a problem keeping his pants zipped up. He dumped Carol by offering to pay her medical bills for life and bought a condo on the beach. 1980 Was a good year for McShame. How about that for a rag to riches story. "Obama 08".

What else can McCain do except criticize, lie and complain? The old fool has no record of his own to run on other than being an ex-POW, of which someone should remind him, does NOT qualify him to be president!

America please wake up before it is too late. McCain is living in the twilight zone by threatening Russia, and other countries with his shoot from the hip lip. What does it say about us as people if we constantly want to fight with other people in this world, instead of using the verbal and diplomatic skills that we have before going to war. McCain (26 years in government) and his friend Bush (nearly 8 years) are two of the least intelligent products of the Republican party that I have seen so far. Look at the mess they and their conservatives have created for all of us who are not fortunate enough to be wealthy. God please help America and save us from another Bush term!

ignorant people deserve ignorant leaders.its a dangerous world and we dont need a president who does not believe that but rather believes we are all world citizens.reminds me of the movie spoof invasion of the martians where the president says cant we all just get along.lets apply current logic to all situations in our lives.the less experience the better. airline pilots need minimal flight training/experience,police no special training, doctors.lawyers, teachers, plumbers, electricians, soldiers, basketball coaches, football coaches, olympic athletes.anyone with any experience cant fiil these positions because we are better off with smooth talkers.

Cathy in MD   August 13th, 2008 10:02 am ET

Why is it okay for McCain to jet-ski with foreign leaders (if he really has, I just can’t picture it), but when Barack Obama simply meets with them he’s criticized for appearing too “presidential” and overstepping the boundaries of what should be Bush’s territory? Incidentally, where was Bush during that beach party? Anyway, this cozy camaraderie between McCain and Scheunemann makes me question McCain’s motives, judgment and trustworthiness. McCain is obviously terribly jealous of Obama’s popularity and I suspect he’s been discussing his own personal criticisms of Obama with the Georgian President – which would be highly inappropriate.

Another blow to Sen McCain. Jetskiing with a president on the black see. What a great celebrity is Sen McCain? Can we really afford an all out war? Is it really what we want? I would choose peace, prosperity and economic growth over bombing. So, I hardly see Sen McCain as commander in chief in we dont spend the next quarter century destroying each other. Sorry Sen McCain, it is time to put the country and the rest of the world together. What we have done as unilateralism has backfired. That's why Russia ceases the occasion to show us its military might. We need peace to recover. Probably Sen Mccain can get elected for good in 2032.

Sane John   August 13th, 2008 9:57 am ET

"This is an example of why we needed to invade Iraq and why we need to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Lets see Russia has a very large army and 12,000+ nuclear weapons."

And that makes it good judgment for McCain to be doing everything he can to get into a war with Russia?

McCain is the kind of crazy that'd think we need to invade Russia in winter. Make straight for Moscow, and everything will be just fine, right?

You liberals haven't a clue of the evils in this world. The Eastern mentality understands nothing but force – and the West has not the will to prevail. Russia will simply laugh at the impotence of the U.N., NATO, and the rest of the West and take all they gave up after the break-up of the Soviet Union. It's basically post WWII all over again! And once again, after being the whipping boy of the free world for decades, everyone will look to the U.S. to save their rears again. Although this time, it may not be possible!

McCain is saying we should kick Russia out of the G8 and other international clubs, which is a stupid idea, if we were to do that then we would have no more leverage over them to persuade them to play by the rules.
Also Russia would no longer finance our deficits, Americans would see instant price hikes at the store and at the gas pumps.
Remember Russia controls a percentage of the world oil supply, so they could push up the price of oil on us and Europe.

Age and/or experience doesn't guarantee good judgement. McCain would be a disaster for this country, the world is more dangerous than it has ever been thanks to hawks like him.

Doug   August 13th, 2008 9:42 am ET

The president of Georgia needs to court McCain. If by some stretch McCain becomes president, Georgis will quickly resemble Vietnam (American effort to save small insignificant country from threat of opression and take-over). The prez doesn't want US weaponry to come in and turn his little country into a wasteland...napalm, old land mines, etc.

What Americans have to realize is that although McCain is a good. decent guy with a "colorful" and deverse past, he still carries the wounds of war and imprisonment. He wants to fight a war somewhere because he missed out on the fighting in Vietnam due to his imprisonment. He has a bone to pick. His legacy wants revenge.

No different than W., who went into Iraq because they have scads of oil, Saddam wanted to "kill my daddy", and so the Bush family can say that they saved the world from terrorism....even though terrorism is a statistical blip on the radar screen of danger.

We don't need this "personal vendetta" mentality of the republicans anymore.

Connie   August 13th, 2008 9:41 am ET

I believe that Obama just proved he is the best to lead. Cooler, calmer heads are needed in situation like Russia and Georgia, not bulling our way as we have in the last six years when we invaded a country.I am sure that the McSeniles adviser who was a paid lobbyist to Georgia had a stake in keeping Georgia whole so he could lobby his friend John McSenile in the white house for them. INDEPENDENT NYC   August 13th, 2008 9:40 am ET

Lets be honest here. Georgia is being used by the Republican Party to set an agenda with Russia. Georgia has invaded land that has allegiance to Russia which is the cause of the conflict. This was done by Georgia with the support and blessing of the Bush Administration. Not to mention weapons support. Russia's reactions were in retaliation of Georgia's actions. Senator Obama called for a reversal of positions back to the status quo – a position prior to Georgia's insurgence on Russia's territory – McCain wants to continue that insurgence and add flame to the fire. How many wars or conflicts does this elderly citizen think we can handle at one time; conflicts that factual have nothing to do with our national security.

If McCain is the answer to the troubles of the U.S. of A., why wouldn't the republicans have voted to put him in office 8 years ago? Why nominate and elect Bush? Something doesn't seem right with the republicans and this election. I feel they have caused enough trouble and many are bailing out. Which leaves McCain to be so nieve and arrogant enough to want to run 8 years later. After the way the republicans had thrown McCain under the bus?

...I believe I have made up my mind. The republicans doesn't sit well with me this go round. I've decided as an independent voter to cast my support for Obama. At least his campaign isn't a regime of Bush or anyone close to it.

Nikki, Florida   August 13th, 2008 9:34 am ET

When is the McCain camp going to stop criticizing and start telling us what McCain would do for this country. You can't always win by tearing others down.

voter   August 13th, 2008 9:32 am ET

Laura from Boston you are correct. You also want someone who knows the difference between a femor and a rotary cuff when you are having surgery. Not someone who claims to have experience but can't tell the difference between the two. This is McCain. McCain may have been an POW, but how does this equate to having foriegn policy experience when he does not know that dafur is in sudan and not somelia. He believes iraq borders pakistan which is not true. He does not know the difference between shiate and sunni. How is he planning to speak to world leaders when he confuses countries and cultural groups?

Brenda   August 13th, 2008 9:30 am ET

See how wrong you are again MSwain.... The idea came from Georgia to start it with the blessing of your bigger supporter GWB.... You are really senile, if you believe that Obama got not experience, he proove it again , he is having more judgement than you have in 30 years..

Virginia   August 13th, 2008 9:30 am ET

I noticed that McFossil says he speaks for all Americans on the Russian and Georgia problem. Well, he does not speak for me. It is easy to see that if he had his way and had the ability to do so, he would have started sending our troops to Georgia to fight Russia. Is this the kind of person we want? A leader who starts beating the drums for war for the slightest reason? I believe we have had enough of war for a while. Especially one brought by lies and greed. Please vote for Obama, who would at least try negotiations before jumping into war. Our country has been left in a weakened condition due to the Iraqi war. We need time to replenish and rebuild before we start sabre rattling again.

Christy   August 13th, 2008 9:30 am ET

I'm saddened by the events in Georgia but I am much more concerned for our presence in Iraq.

That is why I am voting for Obama.

Lieberman accuses Obama of "not always putting his country first" when it comes to policy.

That statement comes from a guy who always puts Isreal first whenever he has a decision to make. LIke who to support for POTUS.

That statement comes on behalf of a guy whose recent comments are stronger than those of the current POTUS. Whose interest are McCain putting first?

Now they turn around and criticize Obama for going on vacation, while bragging about their man, McCain, having vacationed with the President of Georgia.

Is the general public paying attention to what they actually do, and not what the claim to say and do?

Phil From VA   August 13th, 2008 9:29 am ET

This is a joke. Just because you talk to someone does not mean youy are qualified to run the country. Bush was sitting right next to Putin at the olympics while his country was bombing Georgia.

Would love to know Saakashvili's opinion of John McCain & George Bush.

The US through the Republican administration had basically no diplomatic authority to do any thing in this conflict. Our country is in DIRE need of a president that can build international relations.

Phil in KC   August 13th, 2008 9:28 am ET

If he's such a good friend, why can't he pronounce his name? McCain used Saakashvili's name 3 times in a speech recently and mispronounced it all 3 times.
It would be refreshing to have a president who sounds educated and intelligent when he speaks. After 8 years of a president who sounds like an ignorant hick and offends foe and ally alike, I'd like a president who puts our best face forward to the world and garners their respect.

JC   August 13th, 2008 9:27 am ET

Here we go again – another article that highlights a flaw in Obama and the Obamabots are all over it spewing hatred and name calling. What a shock – every discussion that doesn't praise Obama as the new messiah turns that way.

California Gold   August 13th, 2008 9:27 am ET

This still does not make the voter believe in McCain's policy, which amounts to nothing other than aggressive talk of invading and bombing. In November McCain will experience the back lash for tirelessly campaigning against his opponent rather than campaigning to promote himself.

McCrazy   August 13th, 2008 9:27 am ET

Again, what has all this experience gotten him exactly? Iraq, Iran, Water Sports with the Georgian President? Who cares. He only knows how to start conflicts, not end them.

David, Silver Spring, MD   August 13th, 2008 9:26 am ET

Personally, I don't want my President getting too chummy with specific foreign politicians–it clouds their judgment.

It's like Bush saying he looked into Putin's soul. Now Putin is bombing Georgia and John McCain is playing "water sports" with the Georgian President.

What next, pictures of John McCain walking hand-in-hand with "Misha" ?

JJ   August 13th, 2008 9:25 am ET

McCain is a joke and he needs to stand down from this situation. Both he and Bush just need to let the European leaders handle it. The last thing we need is to tick off Russia. Georgia has not been an innocent party in all this.

I guess Scheunemann should know what he's talking about since he's a lobbyist for Georgia and McCain's top advisor on this issue.

Why aren't you at CNN reporting the fact that one of McCain's campaign staff is a lobbyist for Georgia? No wonder he is himself lobbying so much on Georgia's behalf. All of the phony saber rattling is just talk and only talk. The United States invaded a sovereign nation and refuses to leave. So how can the hypocrites in this country slam Russia for doing the same thing? Quit being a tool and start being true journalists.

EBC   August 13th, 2008 9:24 am ET

McLAME needs to just SHUT UP, he's OLDER than dirt and yet he lacks any level of "original" JUDGEMENTS.

His only focus is taking this country back into another WAR!!! That's ALL he knows. WAR, WAR, WAR!!! How predictable. This OLD WHITE HAIR DUDE continues to live in the past. What a scary thought.

He forgets, HE"S NOT THE PRESIDENT. He's been flapping his gums like he's the man, when in fact, he's NOT THE MAN!!! Sooner or later he's going to stick his nose in too far and it's going to get cut off!! He's meddling yet again and rambling out the side of his neck. His recent speeches were so LAME and put me to sleep yet again.

Experience vs. Judgment
McSame endorses US unprovoked attack on Iraq but condemns Russia unprovoked attack on Georgia. Where is the moral high ground? McSame jet skies with Saakashvili and proceeds to misspeak his name three times in a speech on the Georgian incident. Is the Georgian regime coming out for McSame because he likes to take a hard line against Russia because old habits are hard to give up? All of this makes McSame stronger on international relations? I’m missing the connection.

Funny, that's exactly how I feel about McCain. Everytime he opens HIS mouth, I shake my head and wonder if it's PTSD or pre-Alzheimers causing his confusion. He NEVER is seen without Joe or Lindsay whispering advice in his ear and his handlers have restricted his cell phone use so he doesn't get advice from outside the campaign so I would say they have HIM on a very short rope (or leash) now!

atutsie   August 13th, 2008 9:23 am ET

Since they are friends, how can we trust McCain to make an unbiased judgement in this situation? Friendship with the Georgian president DOES NOT in any way or form indicate that McCain has better international relations. For pits sake, telling one side to restrain itself is not the answer if two parties are fighting. Both have to stop and thus for me Obama shows better maturity.

Jerry   August 13th, 2008 9:23 am ET

So what does Mcain having gone Jet skiing helped the kids, women and men of Georgia who are getting killed every day. Bragging that Mcain are friends with the Georgian president is lame unless he has done anything to bring the two countries to a cease fire. Obama is friends with many leaders that Mcain doesn't even know but Obama won't brag about it.

Mcain, foreign policy does not mean War. It also means peace and economy, your foreign policy "expertise" only seems to be concentrated around war struck countries. Mcain do you know the presidents of Andorra, Grenada, Nauru, Tuvalu etc...they have no standing army and they still exist peacefully.

It is funny how the Obama supporters are posting comments about McCain being a war machine and making comments about why aren't we attacking Russia or defending Georgia militarily. This is an example of why we needed to invade Iraq and why we need to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Lets see Russia has a very large army and 12,000+ nuclear weapons. The Russia issue is a little different than the US invading Iraq. History lesson 101, Iraq invaded their neighbor in '91. We drove them out. We spent the next 10+ years using sanctions and diplomacy with them. Saddam continued to threaten people and refused to work with us to prove that he did not have WMD. We called his bluff. Everyone thinks that we just woke up one morning and decided to invade Iraq.

lets see, McCain gets shot down over Viet Nam, which give him hero status and military insight. Must have visited South Korea where he gets idea for military occupation for generations to come. Is this true......France and other countries in the EU have started talks with the neighboring countries.and cease fire calls have taken place. The U.S. does not and can not solve every countries problems. We do not have the recources. They have been run down. The U.S. does not have the money to handle other countries affairs......as the French Pres. said there are World Courts to take countries to task for any wrong doing by whoever. Oh that the people in the U.S. had that type of effective court system. Here, anyone who is in power can do whatever they wish to whomever they wish at anytime , whithout concequences it seems. Just watch C-Span.....and the non action of the new Attorney General with regards to anything brought to him that might be in the least way tied to Pres. Bush. All the t.v. channels are reporting the stories.....rule of law ?????? If this country can not protect and stop violating it's laws against it's own citizens and take to task wrong doers, whether attorneys or pres. or v.p., then do folks realy believe the U.S. would be effective to other countries ???????McShame has not even been taken to task for knowingly writing a bill that was queitly signed by pres. Clinton that forcefully removed women, children and elders onto a radio-active toxic dump. So much for their health/survival.
He will help now with a health plan ???? No. He will help with the economy ? No. Please....do not forget he is one of the TOP RICH people. He is one of the BIG fish. They did ,however, help their country publicly and in their jobs they were quiet leaders ,by example.

Yes, because CLEARLY the use of troops and military hardware to settle tthe disputes in Georgia is working so well.. why HASN'T NATO or the EU "surged" into Georgia, bombarded the Russians and driven them back to Moscow.

because the situation there is VERY volatile, very tense, and more destruction and troops will only escalate the crisis. you want to talk about a lack of international experience and lack of judgement on the world stage, take a good long look in the mirror McCain. Your positions on the Georgian crisis would only widen the conflict.

..from above.'
He said "nobody is talking about military action" against Russia. He also indicated that U.S. troops wouldn't likely be part of an international peacekeeping force in the separatist regions."

I'm sorry. That is flat out misleading to the point that I will declare it outright false. On Friday, McCain had called for NATO peacekeepers to go into Georgia to resolve the conflict as if Georgia were already a NATO member.

Just what role were these NATO peacekeepers supposed to play this past Friday?

Mike in Houston   August 13th, 2008 9:10 am ET

Hypocrites!

Bill Nash   August 13th, 2008 9:10 am ET

McCain is a neo-con war monger, as is his top advisor. What's all the more dangerous here is that Scheunemann is being paid by the Georgian gov't. to expouse this diatribe. McCain will insure that we go to war with Russia and Iran. It naturally follows then, given the depletion of our military, that we must have a draft. We can all now agree that we were lied to, intentionally deceived, and duped into supporting a war with Iraq. Trust and believe McCain will dupe us into WWIII. Is this what America needs right now: A 72-year old, senile hawk, still trying to fight the Viet Nam war all over again? Think about it...

RAY IN NJ   August 13th, 2008 9:08 am ET

Hmmm...because McCain's lobbyist has worked for the Georgian president, this makes McCain a foreign policy expert? Yes, the fact that they are intimate does give him an advantage in this one country but I seriously question whether this qualifies McCain as "ready to lead". I'm sure if Obama knew the Georgian president, the McCain campaign would malign him for such a relationship – saying this is more indication of his "celebrity" but does nothing regarding "experience". 'Experience' without 'Judgement' means nothing in my opinion. McCain seriously lacks the latter as evidenced by his chaotic campaign and flip-flops on every issue. Whatever he feels is the right thing to say at the time becomes his stance. What kind of leader is that? More Bushism! Finally, the fact the McCain has issued statements on the Russian/Georgian conflicts as if he were already elected smacks of serious "audacity" and "presumptiousness"! Again, if it were Obama, the republicans would be saying the same!

ben   August 13th, 2008 9:07 am ET

Who cares what a Georgian lobyist says? Obama would like to see diplomacy used instead of war. Georgia feels they are already at war and who better than the United States under McCain to join them against Russia. Russia is not Irak, my friends. They do not have a rag tail army. They do have a powerful air force. They also have a nuclear bomb! !!!!!!!!

Mike   August 13th, 2008 9:07 am ET

So... we should vote for the inside man, is that it? The guy who has had lots of time while his party was in power to get these cherry picked state visits? it shouldn't count as "experience" if you weren't calling at least some of the shots...

So what is McCain's actual plan for dealing with this situation? Let Georgia fall? Declare war on Russia? What does that "15 years" get us, Senator?

Oh, and next time you meet with the President, Senator, please ask him what exactly he saw when he looked into Mr. Putin's soul. We'd love some details; it might even tell us if Russia is going to try something in Iran, Iraq, or Afghanistan...

Lay off Obama for a minute and tell us what you will do for us, Senator McCain, and where you will lead us. Because, if you're elected, that's all that will really matter.

Which nations are now siding with McCain? Always generalizations and attacks without any details. McCain's bellicose response and his presumptuous comments are politicizing a very tense situation and further isolating America's voice in the world.

McCain's support of the Bush foreign policy and obviously a desire to see everything in black and white has made America unable to help in an "international peacekeeping force" and anow are spectators on the sidelines as the real diplomacy is being handled by the Europeans.

Shawn, Lincoln, NE   August 13th, 2008 9:03 am ET

That's great for McCain if we in the middle of the Cold War but this is a new century where force must be met by overwhelming international response. Bellicose statements about Russia will not hinder their intentions of returning Georgia back to Russia. Democracy must be protected here in Georgia so that others can know we stand with and for them. The Czech radar plans and recognition of Kosovo have contributed to Russian antagonism to the West but we are correct in promoting democracy in Kosovo, Georgia, and wherever it is threatened by a police state. The European Union, NATO, UN, and the US must get a peaceful settlement here with as little bad feelings as possible so the Russian mentality does not return to a paraniod distrust of the West. Maybe Bush should go jetskiing with Putin to solve our dilemma and bring our two countries closer.

If McCain is such "good friends" with Georgia's president, how come he mispronounced his name 3 times

Mr Republican   August 13th, 2008 8:58 am ET

Hey Mr McCain, is it the Shiites or the Sunnis that are fighting in Georgia?

Hurley   August 13th, 2008 8:57 am ET

The crisis in Georgia exposes how delusional and out-of-touch McCain actually is. He's saber-rattling and trying to start a new Cold War while our economy is on the skids and our military is already stretched to the breaking point in two major conflicts. McCain is imperiling this nation, and heaven help us all if the American people are foolish enough to let this incompetent into the White House.

Brian G, Sugar Land, TX   August 13th, 2008 8:56 am ET

Actually, John McCain's rush to judgement comments (most undiplomatic and largely hypocritical to critize "an invading country" after all the recenet invasions the USA has engaged in) demonstrate that he is NOT ready for the job of commander in chief.

The stupidity of the statement: "Today we are all Georgians" was so ridculous. Most of Americans (even the well traveled ones) can't find the country of Georgia on a map, let alone empathize with any of its heritage, culture, language, or religious background.

What McCain should have said is "Ich bin ein dumber than toast".

raw is war   August 13th, 2008 8:56 am ET

"You can't compare a 15-year historical record to three or four statements over the course of 15 months."

but when the only direction McCain wants to pursue over 15 years is "bomb the **** out of them" and in 15 months you have someone willing to pursue peaceful diplomatic negotiations, it makes you think

Not fooled by distractions   August 13th, 2008 8:55 am ET

Obama may lack experience in Mr. McCains position, but his reaction to the situation in Georgia convinced me that he's the wrong man for the presidency. He's too heavy handed and leans too fully on bully diplomacy like bush did and we can all see what a failure that isolationists theory has become.

McCain proved to me this week, that he has the wrong temperment and disposition for the presidency.

I'll take Obama's brand of experience over McCains any day.

NoMcSame   August 13th, 2008 8:55 am ET

But you and Bush have not done anything. The Russians are having their way with Georgia and Georgia is calling for help and you talk tough but take no action. In other words your card has been pulled and now it's time to show COWBOY. Our troops are spread so thin that we can't do anything to help them. Ok McSurge go surge on Georgia to stop the Russians. Saddam went into Kuwait and you sent in the military to stop him, so why don't you send in the boys to stop the Russians. America looks like COWARDS to the rest of the world because we run in to fight against the little guys but when it comes to the big dogs we want to run to the U.N.
McSame, you said that you know how to win a war well I would like to know what war have you won? Talk is cheap MY FRIEND.
We are watching Bush/McSame

He's too old   August 13th, 2008 8:55 am ET

I heard that when the communists took over Russia in 1917, McCain was pissed.

pat C.   August 13th, 2008 8:54 am ET

i am sure McCain keeps up with war stories. that is all he knows. obama is trying to pull our country together ecominically and bring peace to countrys that can not stand us while the old white haired man is just looking for a place and reason to send our american troops in to bomb..bomb...bomb!
at least obama is intelligent enough to prononce these other countries leaders names correctly.
i bet old McWar and oliver north are buddies as well but that means nothing to me when i am trying to stretch my income to pay extra on food, gas as well as worrying about my children's future as to whether they will have jobs when they get out of school.we must have a president that feels our pain, and not jump into wars that we shouldn't be a part of.

adam   August 13th, 2008 8:54 am ET

So this just goes to show that McCain wants to follow Bush's lead... shoot your mouth off, tough talk, create conflict, use the military, spend money on war not on health care. We can see that McCain's "axis of evil" has already begun and Russia will be on the top of the list. But since we need Russian oil, it will be the same old thing... spend the money on war, not on getting ourselves free of oil.

He's too old   August 13th, 2008 8:54 am ET

I read somewhere that McCain was pissed when the communists took over Russia in 1917.

IndependentGA   August 13th, 2008 8:53 am ET

I used to be a McCain supporter. Right up to the the last rep primary debate, when he continued to say things about Romney that was proven to be false. Then I supported Huckabee. He won my state, but lost the primaries.

Although McCain has more experience than Obama, I think Obama would be much better for our country as a whole. Obama seems to understand that no matter who is the president, things will not get done unless we change the tone and tenor of our politics.

But you know how we, Amercians are. We love drama. We love the negativity that comes from campaigns. It's like a sport.

As far as the conflict between GA and RUSSIA is concerned, I have a senerio/question to pose for whomever:

One of our states(FL) decides that they want independence from America. Do we let them just break away from the rest of our country? and, If they refused to let go of their aspirations of independence and a foreign country(China) decides to support Florida, what would be the USA's response?

Probably the same as Russia's response to the USA and Georgia?

If that's the case, are we a power that says do as I say, not as I do?

If it was okay for us to invade Iraq to suit our needs, why is Russia so wrong for invading Geargia to suit their needs?

Liberal4Obama   August 13th, 2008 8:53 am ET

John McCain cant be an honest broker in any conflict the US is involved in. Why? because lobbyists are involved at every turn running his campaign and advancing their own interests.

This is very troubling that John McCain would make a former lobbyists to a country party to the conflict his primary spokesman. It shows poor judgement when it comes to handling international affairs, where at all times you want to show an image of honesty, equality and non bias at every level.

Darryl Miller   August 13th, 2008 8:53 am ET

If Sentar John McCain had his way America will be at War wit the World. America is not the World Police and we must study what happening around the world and not be to quick to react nor too slow to response.

The US has it's hand s tied and Russia knows this it time for the UN to stepup..

Bush need to just to straight to JAIL. with CHANEY..

Orlando   August 13th, 2008 8:53 am ET

I find it odd that McCantRemember adviser questioning Obama experience in Georgia while in reality they have a lot of experience in Georgai LOBBYING. McCain can't remember how he votes and lobbyist questioning experience. EXXON JOHN REMEMBER "THEIR WILL BE NO LOBBYIST RUNNING MY CAMPAIGN"

This is a Judgement CALL.

OBAMA THE JUDGEMENT TO LEAD CHANGE

Republicans Hate America   August 13th, 2008 8:52 am ET

Anand   August 13th, 2008 8:50 am ET

Aaah, a day of watersports in 2005. Tell me, how is that going to stop Russia from sending Georgia back to the stone age in the coming week?

McCain Jetskiing on the Black Sea. And the GOP has the nerve to criticize Obama for taking a break in HI to visit his gandma!

I think I'll play online poker with Putin. I know that will help reverse Russia's course.

proud army and navy mom   August 13th, 2008 8:50 am ET

what's new? mdattack criticizes Sen Obama. That's all he can do because he has no new ideas just the same ole, same ole tired failed policies. Mccain is a senile old man who really needs to retire.

Jeff an Independent   August 13th, 2008 8:50 am ET

Again, judgement is more important than experience. McCain's "experience" is decades as a neo-con hothead. Witness his over-the-top bluster; just as much an over-reaction as Russia's response to Georgia. But Obama – like the rest of the diplomatic world – encourages the parties to the table and a peace. I'll take encouragement to peace over bluster any day.

NEVER OBAMA   August 13th, 2008 8:49 am ET

Obama is a joke and I hope enough people in this country are beginning to realize that fact, if they haven't already. Everytime he opens his mouth I have to shake my head in wonder. He can NEVER think on his feet and has to wait "to get advice" in order to even form an opinion. His "handlers" have him on a very short rope.

Rich R   August 13th, 2008 8:48 am ET

You also can't equate 'jet-ski fun' with thoughtful even-handed foreign policy judgement....

NMB   August 13th, 2008 8:48 am ET

May we remind McSame there is still one president.... and you're not it!

Kevin   August 13th, 2008 8:48 am ET

McCain uses Wikipedia to craft foreign policy. That's scary!

bam   August 13th, 2008 8:47 am ET

By parroting McCain propaganda, this article omits important information that Bush and McCain provoked the conflict in Georgia by encouraging Georgia to move against South Ossetia, under Russian control. Georgia initiated the aggressive action, and Russia responded.

All the experience in the world don't make a good president if that person's motives aren't favorable to the American people, and McCain's record shows this. He is in league with the likes of Bush, Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, all of whom have loads of experience.

How many more international conflicts will be manufactured between now and election day?

Jul   August 13th, 2008 8:46 am ET

Yes, McCain might have russian experience... but in a cold-war sence!! The conflict in Georgia was also provoked by Georgia and not just a russian one... but McCain ignores this! Obama said spoke to both sides... not only to the old enemy. McCain stands for old politics.

VON BISMARK,Vienna.   August 13th, 2008 8:45 am ET

Now it has come to war.Diplomacy is not part of mcWAR's agenda.I had expected him to declare war on Russia before now.His resort to diplomacy and in the process criticizing Obama is tantamount to defeat in his philosophy.
Is he also presumptious when he talks on behalf of America instead of his partner in terrorism Bush?
BOMB,BOMB,BOMB Russia!

jAY   August 13th, 2008 8:45 am ET

Scheunemann gets paid 0ver $200,000 to lobby for Georgia and $70,000 to be McCains top foeregn policy advisor. So who is his most important client. NOT AMERICA!
who is going to ask media darling Mccain the important questions?

Larrry   August 13th, 2008 8:44 am ET

Wow, McCain top advisor and Georgia bought and paid for speaker (lobbyist)...straight talk at it's best. These guys should be ashamed of themselves. People think about it...is this a conflict of interest, is this the judgement of McCain (taking advice from a paid agent)? Scary, real scary.

Greg, NY   August 13th, 2008 8:44 am ET

If McCain and Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili are such great friends, then why can't McCain even pronounce his name correctly?

What a crock.

Are you scared yet America????   August 13th, 2008 8:44 am ET

"You can't compare a 15-year historical record to three or four statements over the course of 15 months."

Actually, you can't compare a lobbyist in the pocket of a Country and daily updates and watersporting together ensuring direct access to the candidate McCain.

Now tell us the truth and tell the promises made to Georgia if McCain becomes President. Then let's talk about experience vs. being bought and paid for.

lynn   August 13th, 2008 8:44 am ET

So this guy was a lobbyist for Georgia and so McCain is acting in Georgia's behalf. And Georgia did provoke Russia. So lets start a new cold war like McCain wants (by shooting off his mouth) when our military is already stretched thin instead of trying to get the situation to calm down. We can't afford another war right now when our enemy is Al Queda not Russia. McCain is showing he is the hothead that should not be in charge of our country nor commander in chief unless we want continuous war.

Turnabout is Fair Play   August 13th, 2008 8:44 am ET

Wow, that's all you're able to use McStain? See? I was there with the president of another country a few years ago! That automatically makes me eligible to be commander in chief because I skiied with the dude!! SEE? SEE? Looks like you left some bad karma over there when you left.. God, can you imagine Mr. Pasty in shorts water skiing? EWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

Richard   August 13th, 2008 8:44 am ET

Hillary supporter for McCain! A true American!

Ryan Sullivan   August 13th, 2008 8:43 am ET

Well it's no wonder McCain and Saakashvili are so close what with his campaign's lobbying ties to the Georgia Republic. As if that's something to brag about!

Salina, Washington, DC   August 13th, 2008 8:43 am ET

I'm sure the Georgian president has much more important issues to attend to and problems to resolve than having to worry about updating John McWar daily. And I seriously doubt McStiffness was jet-skiing with anyone 2 years ago, he may have been in his rocking chair on the shore watching someone jet-ski but I doubt he was actively participating in any such activity. The lies from these idiots just keep coming don't they. LOL!!

McCorny thinks war is the answer to everything. That's his foreign policy: let's go to war! He's insane and senile. He is not qualified to be president of anything.

Why does John McCain keep claiming to have such experience in areas that are clearly headed for or in an actual state of disaster? Is McCain claiming that he saw the invasion of Georgia coming? If so, what did he do about it? Is he saying that this invasion is Obama's fault because Obama had nothing to do with it? The whole message is so muddled that, frankly, I wonder just exactly what he is claiming.

Watermann   August 13th, 2008 8:42 am ET

Oh, holy cow, what a nonsense. I am so fed up with the crap these kind of advisers are talking. They do not at all knowing the facts but they keep on talking because their foreign donors or their boss told them to do.

McCain = Bush-Cheney 3rd term   August 13th, 2008 8:42 am ET

Hmmmmmm. McCain went jet skiing with a man whose name he cannot even pronounce. Must have been a 'bonding' trip.

Aways question the source & if it doesn't sound right – don't believe it.

Concerned INDEPENDENT CT voter   August 13th, 2008 8:41 am ET

What did Russia do that was any different from what the U.S. did to Iraq? Maybe they thought Georgia had WMD's........

Chips   August 13th, 2008 8:41 am ET

Yell, 15 years of experience and he still can't pronounce your name.

Jiggles   August 13th, 2008 8:40 am ET

Hold on- Obama has said much the same thing as McCain, the only difference is that Obama waited for the facts before laying the balme as Russias door, and didn't choose to rachet up the tension by suggesting (without any real evidence) that Russia had suddenly decided to attempt to create a new Czar republic.

McCains speeches on the conflict have betrayed a cold war mentality that neeedas to be left behind for the good of America, and indeed for the rest of the world.

Obama showed that he can talk tuff, and say what needs to be said without becoming hysterical and paranoid like McCain- seems to me that in his few months he has learnt how to deal with world events in a far more nuanced way that McCain has managed in 15 years...

Bob Stephens   August 13th, 2008 8:39 am ET

McSame got all his information that was in his statement on Georgia, pretty much word for word , from Wikipedia ( If you don't believe that , look up the statement he made the other day, and compare it word for word.). Then he couldn't even get the President's name correct, although he said they were " Good Friends"....... What a loser...

Ok   August 13th, 2008 8:38 am ET

Scheunemann is a lobbyist for Georgia for goodness sake. Of course he and McSame's team of lobbyists turned "advisor" would just brief McBush about the conflict/war in Georgia. McBush's response to the Georgian war stirrs up the dust of the cold war, potentially wounds our relationship with Russia, and it frankly sounds like something a lobbyist for Russia would put together, not the potential, hopefully not, leader of the free world. By the way I am in no way saying Georgia is bad.

sherry for Obama   August 13th, 2008 8:38 am ET

It amazes me how McCain feels he is an expert in all things just because he was a prisoner of war.
He's a legend in his own mind.

OBAMA 08

Puck   August 13th, 2008 8:38 am ET

So, "nobody is talking about military action" against Russia?

Well, then all McCain can tout is that he and Saakashvili are
BFFs and they talk on the phone every day. Wow. Oh wait,
I forgot that they went jet skiing together 2 years ago – which,
I might add, I wouldn't mind seeing photogrpahic evidence
of, due ot the fact that I can't picture a wobbly. 70-year old
John McCain racing around on a jetski.

Where does that leave us? McCain pretending he'd make a
better president because he talks to Saakashvili on the phone.
McCain has been salivating for something like this to happen
so that he could exploit his relationship with one of the very
few world leaders that he has a relationship with.

Wait, wait – McCain jetskiing on the Black Sea? If it had been
Obama, people would be talking about what an elitist he is.

Tony   August 13th, 2008 8:38 am ET

John B. From New Hampshire   August 13th, 2008 8:37 am ET

Laura   August 13th, 2008 8:37 am ET

I am for neither candidate at this point; however, my gut tells me that Sen. McCain would be able to handle this situation in the much better manner than Sen. Obama. Why? Experience!

So much has been made in the campaigns about "Change" and it seems that experience has become a "dirty" word. Well, when I have a medical problem, I want the guy with the most experience helping me. If I was to need counseling for anything, again I would go immediately to the person who had experience in helping me with whatever problems I had.

The same is true in running the country. Obama will be a great candidate when he gets a little more experience under his belt. Until then I feel the way other Americans do. McCain for foreign issues. Its a no brainer!!

Laura, Boston

americaN for Peace   August 13th, 2008 8:36 am ET

McCain knows war, that's for sure.

I'd rather the U.S. get out of the war business altogether which won't happen with MCWar in office.

Tony   August 13th, 2008 8:34 am ET

And just how much experience does McCain have with Georgia?

Stop whining McCain. You are turning into a real BORE!

Russ   August 13th, 2008 8:34 am ET

A day jet-skiing qualifies as having a good grasp of the situation between Georgia and Russia? Oh please spare me. I suspect the water sports McCain and Georgia's president partook in consisted of peeing on one another's legs.

Nathan   August 13th, 2008 8:32 am ET

Is this the same McCain who refers repeatedly to "Czechoslovakia," which does not even exist? Oh, he's a FINE one for foreign policy!

Charles I Am   August 13th, 2008 8:30 am ET

I would like to see these pictures. If John McCain ate lunch with the man it would be all over TV by now. CNN handle J Mac with kid gloves and they would be more than happy to publish these photos. GO AHEAD CNN CONTINUE TO MAKE HIS CASE. WHO NEEDS CAMPAIGN MONEY WHEN YOU GET UNCOMFIRMED REPORTS LIKE THIS ONE!!!!!

OBAMA 08

Rob   August 13th, 2008 8:30 am ET

If you are a smart candidate that you back the heck away from Saakashvili. This was one of the worst calculated moves ever. He gambled and lost. He lost badly and as a result of his headstrong ways, thousands died. I keep seeing the pictures how he tucked tail and ran like a coward through the streets. He has the courage to send innocents to die for his natiionalistic aspirations but when he has a moment to be brave, he looks like a chicken.
I wouldn't be bragging about jet skiing with this imbecile. He just ruined any chance Georgia had a peace and prosperity.
Here is a new campaign them.
McCain and Saakashvili- support them if you want to see a country in ruin!

Judgement over experience   August 13th, 2008 8:30 am ET

Oh well since mccain went jet skiing with the guy then that certainly means he has the foreign credentials to make a decisive judgment on this issue......NOT! Mccain has proved he is lacking in judgement, despite his so called 'experience', his judgement is poor and I don't trust him for a second. He will have us at war quicker than we can blink an eye.

Sean   August 13th, 2008 8:28 am ET

But how would McCain handle it if they weren't "best buddies"? It's much easier to deal with a crisis when you have a pre-existing relationship with that person.

eyes   August 13th, 2008 8:26 am ET

McCain sounds like a celebrity to me – waterskiing on the Black Sea with the Georgian President! We need someone who will work on the issues and not confuse play dates with making history.

bluesky   August 13th, 2008 8:25 am ET

("I can confirm that Sen. McCain and President Saakashvili were jet-skiing on the Black Sea together," he said.)

Definitely puts McCain in touch with the average American, doesn't it?
