Reporters get peek at Meghan McCain's children's book

Reporters got a sneak peek at the new McCain children’s book Wednesday.
Reporters got a sneak peek at the new McCain children’s book Wednesday.

DETROIT, Michigan (CNN) – Reporters on board John McCain’s campaign plane Wednesday got an early look at Meghan McCain’s soon-to-be-published “picture book biography” of her father, titled: “My Dad, John McCain.”

The Simon & Schuster hardback, set to hit stores on September 2, is a brief, sentimental look at the familiar elements of McCain’s legendary biography, including his time in a Vietnamese prison and his run for the White House in 2000.

Several pages are devoted to McCain’s military background and his imprisonment in Vietnam, with relatively little attention paid to his youth (he “broke a lot of rules” in high school, the book says) and to his time in Congress.

Cindy McCain, along with Meghan's siblings Jack, Jimmy and Bridget, are described fondly in the book - but the children from McCain’s first marriage are left unmentioned.

Illustrated by Dan Andreasen, the pictures in the book are gauzy sketches of famous McCain iconography: there’s a drawing of his cadet head shot from the Naval Academy, as well as a rendition of a still-recuperating McCain’s meeting with Richard Nixon following his return from Vietnam. McCain is also depicted sitting forlornly in his Hanoi prison cell.

The book is recommended for children between ages 5 and 10, but it contains a mild dose of the politics, including some of the McCain campaign’s over-arching themes, particularly the notion that McCain "puts his country first."

Meghan conjures one of her father’s favorite town hall tag lines on the book’s final page, writing: “I know he’ll say what he really thinks. Maybe it won’t be what people want to hear. But it will be the truth.”

New Hampshire is praised as the state that vaulted McCain to the Republican nomination; next month's Republican convention, where the Arizona senator is slated to officially receive his party's presidential nomination, is described in the past tense.

“In September 2008, the Republican Party had a big meeting, the Republican National Convention,” Meghan writes. “And on that day, my dad was officially chosen as the Republican candidate for President of the United States.”

One percent of the book’s proceeds will go to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which provides support for wounded military veterans and their families.

I hope she writes the truth in there... that she is a part of his second family after he dumped his first aging and ailing wife for a young hairless. Talk about family values that children can look up to.

Did she include the chapter where he leaves his "damaged" first wife for a beer heiress hoping to fund the rest of his political career with her questionable overseas investments and ties to rogue nations, warlords and foreign dictators?

Good Timing!...But it still won't help your Dad, Mr. McBush get into the White House.
We do not need another, war mongering wealthy Oil man in the office

Very touching stuff, not a single mention of his other children. Not a single mention of the family that was waiting for him while he was a prisoner. I come from a similar split up family, and there is no way we could ever ignore each other. I think that says a lot about his values.

Also, i think this Beer family (more great values) can afford to contribute more than 1% to charity.

I hope the book ends with...

"And then my dad lost the Presidency and moved back home. President Obama said my daddy gave it a good try but just couldnt keep up. The End."

SOOOOOOOOOO what, there trying to court 10 yr olds? What relevance does this have for anything????? Look too at the fact that JUST 1% of proceeds are going to charity. Their worth like 1/2 a billion dollars and all they can muster is 1% come on, pathetic Mr. I'm a veteran and fully and whole-heartedly support them!

Why doesn't she have a chapter about how her daddy cheated with her Mommy while he was leaving his first wife? Propoganda at its finest.

Being a good parent should involve all of the children that have your DNA. He left his first wife for Cindy and I just don't buy this whole great daddy thing.

  18. True American Hero

McCain's a true American hero... The Obama followers who dispute this need to rethink what is important to them in life.

Their first response will be a "warmonger" comment, yet little do they know he has a son fighting in Iraq, and another in the Naval Academy.

He puts AMERICA FIRST... Unlike his counterpart who puts the POLLS FIRST.

I'm proud to vote for this man... He's experienced more in his life than many can ever hope or fear too.

Right the first wife is not alive or human.
She was part of his life and were her kids. Mabe less sanitized books will do him more justice and make it straight talk

This is just one book.... but the phrase "the children from McCains first marriage are left unmentioned" tells all of us that there is more to this story.

    Family Value's people take note.

"Cindy McCain, along with Meghan's siblings Jack, Jimmy and Bridget, are described fondly in the book — but the children from McCain’s first marriage are left unmentioned."

    What does that tell you?

One percent of the proceeds to charity - I am overwhelmed by the generosity.

As to Abby's comment at 1:02, did you mean "young heiress" as opposed to "young hairless"?
