DETROIT, Michigan (CNN) – Reporters on board John McCain’s campaign plane Wednesday got an early look at Meghan McCain’s soon-to-be-published “picture book biography” of her father, titled: “My Dad, John McCain.”
The Simon & Schuster hardback, set to hit stores on September 2, is a brief, sentimental look at the familiar elements of McCain’s legendary biography, including his time in a Vietnamese prison and his run for the White House in 2000.
Several pages are devoted to McCain’s military background and his imprisonment in Vietnam, with relatively little attention paid to his youth (he “broke a lot of rules” in high school, the book says) and to his time in Congress.
Cindy McCain, along with Meghan's siblings Jack, Jimmy and Bridget, are described fondly in the book - but the children from McCain’s first marriage are left unmentioned.
Illustrated by Dan Andreasen, the pictures in the book are gauzy sketches of famous McCain iconography: there’s a drawing of his cadet head shot from the Naval Academy, as well as a rendition of a still-recuperating McCain’s meeting with Richard Nixon following his return from Vietnam. McCain is also depicted sitting forlornly in his Hanoi prison cell.
The book is recommended for children between ages 5 and 10, but it contains a mild dose of the politics, including some of the McCain campaign’s over-arching themes, particularly the notion that McCain "puts his country first."
Meghan conjures one of her father’s favorite town hall tag lines on the book’s final page, writing: “I know he’ll say what he really thinks. Maybe it won’t be what people want to hear. But it will be the truth.”
New Hampshire is praised as the state that vaulted McCain to the Republican nomination; next month's Republican convention, where the Arizona senator is slated to officially receive his party's presidential nomination, is described in the past tense.
“In September 2008, the Republican Party had a big meeting, the Republican National Convention,” Meghan writes. “And on that day, my dad was officially chosen as the Republican candidate for President of the United States.”
One percent of the book’s proceeds will go to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which provides support for wounded military veterans and their families.
You people are so angry. Geez, count to 10 and breathe deep. Obama and his heard of unicorns will ride in to save the day.
1% is better than what "My Dad, John McCain" is giving to the troops.
OK...2 books Bashing Mr. Obama and one that says "My Daddy's GREAT!!!" YAY!!!!!
It should be titled "Dear OLD Dad"
When McCain is elected–this will be just as important to enriching our children's lives about the benefits of leading a purpose filled life, trust in family and country, and proof that keeping ones faith in yourself and your ideals can result in very great things.
My salute–a good work that should be up there with other childrens books about our nation's heros–from George Washington, through Knute Rockne and Jim Thorpe, John Marshall, Martin Luther King–and on to John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barrack Obama.
C'mon CNN it's time to do a story about his first wive, do some research, do some journalism!!!
I can see thru all of the GOP's lies and distractions. A positive book about McCain is released, and a negative one about Obama is released all at the same time. We are sick and tired of the old politics that distract and distort the truth. Not this year, not this time.
Did she really write it or is it just more propaganda to try and make McCain look like a good father? I remember Cindy McCains recipes– those weren't hers, maybe this was just written by someone else trying to make McCain look good.
We're missing about 10 years of philandering in this book.
ONE percent, that's it...these guy's have some nerve, one percent just to say its going to donations to help it sell, what nerve...
It's to bad this sweet little children has become a person that encourages war and spreads false information on the campaign.
CNN what about the first wife and where i shes
This will give George something to read as soon as hes done reading "My Pet Goat".
3% McCain supporters
YEAH CNN YOU'RE REALLY UNBIASED...
This will never see the light of day like 150 of my other 152 posts...
Was this book written by GW Bush? Like all childrens books I'm sure its cute but also a fairytale.
What a Load of Crap. Totally for political gain.
I approved this book and it will help my election chances, plus more money for my campaign.
What a nasty bunch of democrats–cutting up a children's book. I did not hear the repubs slicing and dicing Obamas for exploiting their children and them deciding it was a bad idea, and then continuing to exploit them. I believe it was the daughter's own idea, not exploitation by her Dad--unlike the Obamas.
So, if he can't bring his own children together as a family how is he suppose to help our country?
Where the hell am I, in Sparta?
Wanna teach the kids the glories of war and military service, do ya?
So a childrens book about McCain........ I really hope people won't waste their money in this waste of paper.
anotjer political stunt from mccain for a push to get more votes,, wonder if she knows the real story about mccain on how he decieved us while he was in the service,, this can be checked out on doin searches about mccain via military:mccain,, check it out ,, i have,, very interesting if you click on the right link,,,,
Can we see that photo with Nixon again?
Get out the handkerchief people ! Simon and Schuster are also publishing a book smearing Obama. No surprise here ! Except that the little children will fight and die in Iraq for the next 100 years.
Luis? You don't know that the Manhurian Candidate reference fits McCain do you? What an idiot!!!
Good thing it's a children's book...
Adults aren't as forgiving when it comes to selective amnesia! I feel SO sorry for McCain's 1st wife and his children from that marriage....... Forgotten, ignored, and written out of history - how convenient!
That said I am sickened by such propaganda and I feel such a book shouldn't be written until dear old Dad is pushing up daisies...
It'll be relegated to the bargain bins in no time!
