Reporters get peek at Meghan McCain's children's book

Reporters got a sneak peek at the new McCain children’s book Wednesday.

DETROIT, Michigan (CNN) – Reporters on board John McCain’s campaign plane Wednesday got an early look at Meghan McCain’s soon-to-be-published “picture book biography” of her father, titled: “My Dad, John McCain.”

The Simon & Schuster hardback, set to hit stores on September 2, is a brief, sentimental look at the familiar elements of McCain’s legendary biography, including his time in a Vietnamese prison and his run for the White House in 2000.

Several pages are devoted to McCain’s military background and his imprisonment in Vietnam, with relatively little attention paid to his youth (he “broke a lot of rules” in high school, the book says) and to his time in Congress.

Cindy McCain, along with Meghan's siblings Jack, Jimmy and Bridget, are described fondly in the book - but the children from McCain’s first marriage are left unmentioned.

Illustrated by Dan Andreasen, the pictures in the book are gauzy sketches of famous McCain iconography: there’s a drawing of his cadet head shot from the Naval Academy, as well as a rendition of a still-recuperating McCain’s meeting with Richard Nixon following his return from Vietnam. McCain is also depicted sitting forlornly in his Hanoi prison cell.

The book is recommended for children between ages 5 and 10, but it contains a mild dose of the politics, including some of the McCain campaign’s over-arching themes, particularly the notion that McCain "puts his country first."

Meghan conjures one of her father’s favorite town hall tag lines on the book’s final page, writing: “I know he’ll say what he really thinks. Maybe it won’t be what people want to hear. But it will be the truth.”

New Hampshire is praised as the state that vaulted McCain to the Republican nomination; next month's Republican convention, where the Arizona senator is slated to officially receive his party's presidential nomination, is described in the past tense.

“In September 2008, the Republican Party had a big meeting, the Republican National Convention,” Meghan writes. “And on that day, my dad was officially chosen as the Republican candidate for President of the United States.”

One percent of the book’s proceeds will go to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, which provides support for wounded military veterans and their families.

"One percent of the book’s proceeds will go to the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund" = A SLAP IN THE FACE of our veterans and their families!!!

This is the equivalent of leaving one penny on the table as a tip, letting the waitress know that you thought about a tip but they didn't deserve any more than that.

    Jan,

Get a grip. Obama was blasted by the right wing when his kids were on TV as exploiting them for political purposes. But, he realized afterwards it may not have been the best decision.

No, his duaghter probably did not have to be convinced to write this book but isn't the timing interesting? And why whitewash the story?
    Is that "straight talk"?

Luis....I think I just give up on you.

Everyone calls Obama a celebrity, and maybe he is...but so is McCain, and EVERY other candidate that has run for president. I hate to break it to most of you Obama haters, but this IS a popularity contest – on a huge scale. He may be the anti-christ, but I'd rather trust the first black president than another narrow minded, deficit-creating, bloodthirsty rerun of Bush.

    3% McCain supporters

    YEAH CNN YOU'RE REALLY UNBIASED…

This will never see the light of day like 150 of my other 152 posts…"

Dude your an idiot and apparently you don't know math, 95+3 is not 100% you must get your math from Bush. And we "obamabots" post things because we actually support and like our candidate.

So here is the real story.

John McCain's first wife was the former Carol Shepp. Married in 1965 and divirced in 1980. Her children are Douglas (born 1959), Andrew (born 1962) and Sidney (born 1966). If you look close you will see that he only had one child with Carol. The first two were hers from a previous marrige and not they didn't have an affair, her husband died.

His second wife is the former Cindy Hensley. They were married in 1980. They have four children, Meghan (born 1984), John Sidney IV "Jack" (born 1986), James (born 1988), and Bridget (born 1991).

So that is the real story. Enjoy!

CNN – You've just been sucker punched by the McLame campaign!

A childrens book my butt – It's McLame campaign propaganda pure and simple – only dressed up with kiddy pictures and fawning prose for one of the candidates.

  10. Please and Thank You

Wonderful book, wonderful story, thank you CNN!. See, he is human after all, not the oger that you're pundits and Anderson Cooper are now trying to bias the american public against, of course, in favor of telling us that Obama is our next President.

This man, is a father, who loved his country enough to fight in a(nother) misguided War, raise a family (referring to you're report on how he dumped his 1st wife as a unconsionable article) and now who's daughter, not just wife, but who's daughter loves her father so much as to focus her talents on a most excellent book.

Now, you can waste your money on that book about Edwards, or the countless self fulling Obama falicies or you can spend value-added money on a book who celebrates her father.

Now that tells me more about the integrity of the man that all the world wind trips to Europe at the last political minute(referring to Obama's Circus Show of late)..and convinces me that much more to vote for Johnnie Mac...again, if he chooses Hillary over keeping the state of Virginia red versus purple or red.

WoW – As a Country we've reverted back in time (history) to the times of 1776!..the last time 2 sides of our then republic fought over the state of Virginia, with how (few) many delegates..

When are we going to look FORWARD and FOCUS on our CHILDRENS FUTURE not our own egos....now, take a very important note from McCain's most intelligent daughter and let's all just get along.

While children under the age of 18 cannot vote, adults over the age of 18 can't think of the children under the age of 18. The candidate who focuses on FACT BASED Information and our CHILDRENS FUTURE – wins my vote....

I think it is in very poor taste for McCheater and Cindy McSkank to exploit their child in an effort to get votes. This is sick, sick, SICK!

McLooser left his first wife because he felt she had 'changed' since he returned from Viet Nam. REALLY? The fact that she was in a serious car crash and had numerous surgeries that left her 5 inches shorter?

McCoward filed for marriage with McSkank while still married to his first wife so he and Cindy are adulterers. He left his first wife for money and political ambition.

McSongbird sold out his wife for money, his country for special treatment in Viet Nam, and has sold out many Arizona constiuents with shady land deals, the Keating-5 shady land swap scandal, Viet Nam Vets with senate votes AGAINST their interest, and WILL sell out Americans for his own self interest.

I am an AMERICAN, Not Georgean!

    Never vote for Songbird McWarmonger

You people are totally way off base.

Here is a daughter who loves her dad despite his faults. (Do your dad's have faults? Does Obama have faults?) She is conveying a story about her dad from her eyes and that is a wonderful sweet thing. How many dad's would be proud if their children took the time and wrote about them and then (not having to) donate part of the profits (remember her Mom is the heiress not Megan) to charity. That too would put a lump in most dad's throats.

So let's knock off the wisecracks unless your going to write how Obama made money off his books and has another one coming out. You know what's good for the goose is good for the gander too!

I have one more point...did anyone stop and think that Meghan doesn't know her half siblings? So maybe she would have been uncomfortable writing things about their lives that was to he hearsay.

Just know that Carol McCain has moved on and actually supports John for President!!
