McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) — John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Related: Book blasted for 'vicious innuendo'

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" — the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Doug, you are a idiot. The shoe does not fit. There are over 80 false statements in that book.

widespread_panic   August 16th, 2008 1:05 am ET

I have been reading all the comments on CNN for a few months now and I must say the Obama supporters scare me. You slam anyone and anything that does not agree with your way of thinking. Am I wrong or is this supposed to be an exchange of ideas. I am a McCain supporter but I am an American. I will fall in line with the next President, who ever wins. Can you all same the same? If not, then please move because there are a lot of people that would take your place.

John Long   August 16th, 2008 1:04 am ET

After two terms of electing the village idiot based on swift boating and falsehoods, if the american public elects another McBush based on the same kinds of falsehoods and lies, they deserve the mediocrity that is sweeping the country - like the number of silver and bronze medals that the U.S is able to win compared to the number of Gold!

uesd2bdemocrat   August 16th, 2008 1:03 am ET

I can't wait to hear all of obama's supporters crying during the democrat convention. Looks as if obama has caved into Clinton's demands. Looks as if the corruption during the primaries is beginning to cause problems for the corrupt leadership. If obama with all his corrupt cronies can't control a woman, how can he lead a country with all the agendas that those in America have, much less the world? obama is to weak to lead this nation. If you obama supporters are feeling let down now, just think what you have in store for you come Nov?

beverly   August 16th, 2008 1:03 am ET

mccain, he can't hear , somethings he can't remember maybe he is to old for the highest office in the country. he from the old school, he does'nt want change. far as his war record how many years did he spend in veitnam, i believe he was pow for five years so does he know what to do at 3:00 oclock when the red phone rings, in the white house how qualifies is mccain if he was lock up for five years. it appears he has a score to seattle, wrong country it was alright he thinks for united states to invade iraq, but it's wrong for russia to invade geneva, there is something wrong with picture who is really the enemy?

lil   August 16th, 2008 1:03 am ET

Look at this picture and you will know whether or Mccain is lying
about being flippant.
He is a mean nasty old man who will do anything to win and I am sure
this book was written and published with his blessings.
If you look at this picture you can see the mean look on his face a look of emptiness thats always there especially when he speaks to certain
people just before he does that crazy laugh when he is pretending to joke but he is verrrrry serious. I dont trust him infact I am afraid of him.
He is very scary dangerous just look at him.

Brandon Hillary Puma4Mc   August 16th, 2008 1:02 am ET

Why should it be considered a smear when its true?
I can see why Mc Cain finds it and all things obama humorous he is a joke of a selected nominee and his numbers are slipping fast as we lead up to the sham of a convention.

David   August 16th, 2008 1:02 am ET

McBush is not fit to be President. He is the last one to talk about sense of humor. He looks and sounds years older than 71 soon to be 72. I'm still waiting for the media to ask McCain about his straying from his marriage with his first wife before he divorced her. That is factual data, not the lies and trash in the latest book by Mr. Corsi about Obama.

It's about time someone put the truth about Obama in print. The mainstream media certainly isn't interested in reporting the truth.

Daniel from FL   August 16th, 2008 1:00 am ET

McLame is despicable. I guess this is yet another instance of the CANDIDATE not speaking for the CAMPAIGN. They could have at least come up with a better excuse than this one. People are actually voteing for this moron?! No wonder America is seen as the dumbest nation on the planet.

karen   August 16th, 2008 12:56 am ET

These presidential campaign are getting horrible. I like a lot of other voters are really getting sick of the outright lies and deceptivenessof these campaigns, These people making these TV ads and smear campaigns, are not good decent Americans,

Heres an idea. How about the REAL facts about both candidates
being put out there for voters to see and letting us make our OWN minds up instead of the scare tactics that go on now!!!!.

Then let the best man win!!!

Brian, Pittsburgh   August 16th, 2008 12:54 am ET

So McCain's defense is he's losing his hearing?? When that phone rings at 3AM, we need a President that can HEAR IT RING!!

But seriously… McCain is trying to have it both ways, again. What happened to the "honorable" campaign he was going to run? Smear books like this are the prime example of dirty politics, but McCain's response is to laugh about it, and then claim he didn't hear the question. REPEAT THE QUESTION.

Take a stand, McCain. Draw a line in the sand, and get on the right side, or the Rove side!!

C   August 16th, 2008 12:53 am ET

Just curious…I read these comment every now and then. It seems that Obama campaign workers wait to bounce on the latest story and blast McCain and praise Obama. It all doesn't really have much meaning after a while…just noise.

uesd2bdemocrat   August 16th, 2008 12:51 am ET

As usual, the liberal media lapdogs, an obama through his surrogates are looking for anything they can to cast McCain in a bad light. McCain said he has made no comment on the book. I would not be surprised to find that the book is very factual. If obama had been forthright from the beginning about his racist, socialist past his campaign would not have to be always be in a defensive position. Looks like obama's chickennnnnnnnnnnnnnn's are coming home to roost!

Why are the media outlets dignifying Corsi and his book? The love of money and ratings! Yes! Stop the madness! Has most of America lost its sense of decency? Corsi is an evil man. The book is a certified peace of trash. The book should be banned from decent book stores or sold only with a disclaimer about the accuracy of its contents. The
main stream media should not be a partner in the poisioning of the minds of the American public. The book is unfit for publication!

I am shocked that C-SPANN will have this ugly, poor excuse of a human being on its Saturday morning lineup. What is our nation coming to? No pusher of lies and hatred should be given an open forum on a program that the revenue from my cable bill payments is helping to make possible. This is totally disgusting!

McCain is unethical and a coward. How dare he "choose not to comment" on a pack of clear and unambiguous lies! That is not the action of a true soldier. He's nothing but an old politician, willing to take advantage of the gullibility of voters that will buy this pack of lies. Just like they bought the SwiftBoatLiars.

I miss the ol' John McCain. The one that stood for something, even when it wasn't politically correct or expedient amongst his base.

Tbone   August 16th, 2008 12:30 am ET

I've lost all respect for John McCain. He's sold his soul for a chance to win and traded his integrity for gutter tactics. Where is the courage he showed during his capture by the Vietnamese?

Jacob, Des Moines Iowa   August 16th, 2008 12:30 am ET

Well if some where to wrote a book about McCain as a POW, and rightfully highlight how he violated the code of conduct by sighing statements admitting war crimes and showing pictures when he was used in propaganda films he would be out raged. The difference here is that the Obama book is a falsehoods, while what McCain did would be true. I wonder what kind of sense of humor McCain would have, if it was pointed out that he was not man enough to take one for the team.

Most of the Republican attacks and inuendos against Obama will not stand an impartial scrutiny. The sole aim of the Republicans is to use strong emotive language in order to discredit Senator Obama. A close reading of their stuff, reveals their venom. Such attacks are beneath Democratic campaigns. A writer or journalist should bolster their satements with facts .

I see nothing wring with his statement. You do have to have a sense of humor. What's the problem here? I'm an Obama supporter, but I see nothing wrong with this statement. Flippant means to be courteously condescending. Based on the syntax of the words uttered, it is not flippant. But, it depends on the inflexion in his voice, which would require the entire context to be witnessed and how it was delivered. Thus, it is difficult to determine precisely any conclusion to develop a judgement on. I remain neutral, but love analysing other pundits who are not qualified to analyze such things;)

When McCain says you "have to keep your sense of humor" and then claims not to have understood or heard the question, it has to make us all ask "has he lost his sense of reality?" Perhaps the age of John McCain SHOULD be a legitimate and very important question. The problem with McCain responding this way is that he'll either need to repudiate and denounce the book eventually or stick by his "just have a sense of humor" comment. This book is so inflammatory it may lead to a doubling of the Secret Service detail around Obama to protect him from all the nut cases it will spur into action. Sad

OMG–the book was completely debunked by the RIGHT, not just the left. That the book is a bunch of lies or exaggerations and can't be taken seriously is waht McCain probably meant, not that he personally thinks racist innuendos are funny. In any case, I it's a shame McCain's camp said he didn't hear the question because that alone raises the "age" issue facing him. But bottom line is Obama needs to lighten up and figure out the difference between when people are laughing with you (McCain) and not at you.

Any time there's a mention of Corsi's book at the top of the New York Times bestseller list, it should be pointed out that it got there because of bulk purchases by conservative groups which end up giving them away or selling them a few weeks later for pennies on the dollar. Gaming the system so that conservative books hit #1 is standard practice for imprints like Mary Matalin's.

Oh, and on a related topic, it was great to see Larry King drop the big hammer on Corsi's head the other night. I didn't think he had it in him, but he did, and it was an epic take-down. If only the rest of the media were as good at exposing the truth about Corsi and his ilk.

Jeff   August 15th, 2008 11:25 pm ET

Guys, this isn't the Obama camp whining over something trivial (which it is), this is the DNC. The fact is, neither the Obama or McCain camps have been playing the game respectfully in the slightest, but everyone needs to realize that this is a political campaign (that special time every four years when all of those straight-faced, honorable politicians get to make fools of each other).

G. Rodriguez   August 15th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

These are the same tactics used by the Bush campaign. The same smear-fear garbage. Consequently, you can expect the same results if they win. A military that is unable to respond to any new threats because it is mired in Iraq. Ten billion a month to Iraq while that government is banking billions in oil sales. A loss of prestige and influence for the USA on a global level. An economy on the brink of a recession, with deregulation as at least partially to blame. Sounds great doesn't it? Makes you just want to go out an vote for McCain for four more tortured years of poor judgment, "stay the course" mentality..

Allison R.   August 15th, 2008 10:37 pm ET

So if I write a book stating that John McCain supports the KKK and believes that women shouldn't serve in the military (or even work for that matter, they are women after all), will I be placed on the NYT best seller list too? Shame on Anerica for allowing this to happen. Truly, for a country (and media) claiming to be so "modern", it disgusts me that an indivdual's name or ethnic background still determines his or her reputation. Muslim because of a middle name? My middle name is Marie. Does that make me stamped without papers? Disgust at the perpetuation of worthless news and racism.

It's the stupid factor. All the McCain can depend on are the people who have no critical thinking skills, who believe any crap they are spoon fed because they need others to think for them…they still believe the Republicans can deliver the American dream to them even as they kill our sons for oil wars, wreck he economy and then convince them that taxing the very people who are making the big bucks off the backs of the little guy will somehow get them a job or a mortgage when the truth is that if they can scare the little stupid guy into believing that some black democrat will tax them, take away their guns and their freedom (which is now an illusion thanks to McBush) and if they spout the enough lies the dumb people will believe. Hopefully the smart people will outnumber the dullards. It amazes me how the poorest people vote for the very guy who could care less about them after the election. They are a means to an end, once that is done, they can keep the illusion that the enemy is coming to convert them into muslims at gunpoint and steal all the money they don't have in the first place because the rich Republicans have it all.

Ceee   August 15th, 2008 10:33 pm ET

Why isn't anyone writing about the early life of John McCain? I'm sure someone could (1) detail each of the five times he lost his planes and explore why he was ever given another, and another, and another and another, (2) examine his poor showing at the Naval Academy, (3) and relate anecdotes about his cheating on his first wife. As far as I know, each of these areas are true history (unlike some books I could name) and not a figment of imagination. Please, GOP bloggers, let me know if I've been given incorrect information about Senator McCain. I'll look for you to correct the record if I am in error. Seriously. Isn't what I have read previously and just repeated about McCain true? Was my source as unreliable as Corsi?

After nearly 8 years of Republican filth, lies, deceit, borderline treason, and the unconscionable desecration of the Constitution, our sense of humor is OVER. Enough of Republican filth. They have done so much damage to this republic, shredded America's reputation, and crippled our power and influence to such an extent that we cannot laugh it off any more. We're taking this scum out in the next election. A little revolution may be good from time to time, but now, it's absolutely essential for the safety and future of this republic. McCain got PLAYED by the Georgians, and he would have us in three wars at once! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

How sad. How can any self respecting American spend money on this book. You want to talk about being unAmerican? This book is the grandstand of what it means to bring down a fellow American through lies. Any American who buys this book should be ashamed. Any American who buys this book should never and I mean never raise the American flag again. This goes beyond politics. Republicans and Democrats should stand up and say "Shame on you".

So what are these "several documented falsehoods"? I haven't seen a single one on any news site or cable news channel. As much as CNN is in the tank for Obama, you would think they would be listing them one by one and giving you footnotes to cross reference if that was the case.

For the Evangelicals, Religious-Right, Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) Denomination and "Focus on The Family"; your 'loud silence' is a witness of your agreement and support of Corsi's book of lies. This is no surprise considering your 200 year hatred of people that don't look like you and not always agree with you.

Corsi smears YOUR CHRISTIAN BROTHER Senator Obama with blatant lies, and the Religious-Right and SBC nod silently in approval. This is another example why the hypocritical Religious-Right is crumbling. The book repeats claims about Obama that are known to be false for one simple reason … A lie, told often enough, becomes the truth for a lot of people, and the Republicans know it. It worked against John Kerry in 2004. Robert Dole claimed that Kerry did not deserve his three purple hearts because he didn't even bleed when injured. John Kerry still has shrapnel in his body, would the Republicans have us believe that he was born with it? The lies worked in 2004, wouldn't surprise me a bit if they work just as well in 2008.

Okay, so am I suppose to believe that McCain didn't hear the question and just made up an answer to "something in the universe" or that he heard the question and said what he meant? If he didn't hear the question then what was he responding to? How stupid are we Americans suppose to be?

Andy says leftists complain louder and louder when they are wrong. What do right-wingers do? Or moderates while we're at it? Some argument you've got there. Do your fact checking, and you'll find that Obama has a right to complain this time.

McCain may "not fight dirty" as he constantly claims, but he doesn't do anything to keep the attack dogs at bay. Not to mention he pleads the 5th every time he slips. He daren't blame age… When it comes time to being in office, you don't get mulligans Mr. McCain.

The article doesn't mention that the book owes its spot on the NYT best-seller list to it having been bulk-ordered by right-wing organizations, probably trying to give it some semblance of legitimacy.

It's hard to believe how continually vicious and unprincipled Republicans/Conservatives are. Unfortunately a significant part of our electorate is the same. It will believe outright lies if they support what it wants to believe. Even the transparency of getting the swift boat
"writer" to do the same sort of job on Obama won't get to them
I just hope that Obama's people do a better job of combating it
than did Kerry's.

Sounds to me like the Republican Party is performing acts of desparation when they have to resort to total lies and innuendo about the opposition. If they can't win on their own merit, then they are hanging themselves with this latest bookwriting disaster of fabrication! You can't fool the public twice with that crap.

He'd be right if it weren't for the fact people believe that junk.

I hope everyone reads the book. And the truth shall be known!!!

Anybody, but Obama (Dem or Republican)…

Observer   August 15th, 2008 9:54 pm ET

McCain shows us once again that he has no principles, scruples or respectability (not to mention a total lack of sense of humor). His flippant response to the queston sounds about like the "bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" statement that he made. Off the cuff, provocative, and not the kind of response we need to hear from a president.

The Obama campaign is so desperate they're going to say McCain is backing up this book? That's pathetic. Lame try Axelrod, your puppet is still dead even in the polls and trying to lump him in the swiftboaters is not going to change that.
