Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Why does the CNN front page still carry the misleading "Obama plan called 'economic disaster'" headline? Why wasn't that updated for any of the pro-Obama ads that were subsequently released?

How many people say "you got to keep your sense of humor" when they do not hear a question?

If McCain can't even answer a simple question about something that has been in the news constantly for the last week- he is simply unfit to lead this nation.

Oh, and by the way, the subjuect of his age is fair game-

Being black doesn't impair your ability to do the job- being very old does.

So is McCain stupid or deaf? And why is it that his handlers are constantly having to cover his mistakes?

    Corsi is hack.

Media Matters has the complete list of falsehoods from the book on their website: Meidamatters.org – Plus, more about Corsi, including video of his appearance on Larry King Live, and video elsewhere.

I believe McCain probably didn't hear the question, but I'm not surprised the DNC ran with the story. There's no room for benefit of the doubt in the minds of these campaigns. They feel the need to answer every statement. In particular, they aren't answering McCain, but instead this smear campaign which has little to do with McCain himself.

Why don't the Democrats fight back instead of whining about the unfairness of the Republican attacks. Haven't they learned that whining loses elections. Just ask John Kerry.

You can’t get him for being born in Hawaii because his opponent was born in the Panama Canal Zone.
You can’t say his is an infidel because it would be a lie, plus it would touch a nerve with his rival, given the latter’s marital record.
You can’t say he is not smart and well educated because you know very well that he is blessed (and not touched) in the head.
You can’t say he is a big slob, so you say he is an empty suit.
You can’t say he took ‘it’ from Hillary – her poorly managed campaign did without him.
You DO say you don’t trust him, but that’s about all you have going for you – FEAR.
I am sure that there were a number of “Doubting Thomases” and antagonists during the presidency of Honest Abe – who took the oath with no experience – and still his name resonates more than many other leaders to this day.

If John McCain did not hear the question why would he try to answer the question? If I didn't hear something that was said I would not give a flippant answer. First he says he didn't hear the question and now he doesn't have a comment. I think he's hoping the book will help him.

McCain is right, you have to keep your sense of humor.

Most of the Obama smears and lies ARE funny.

McCain is an elitist is very funny. Obama saying "McCain will tell you things about me to scare you" is really funny. Obama is telling us things that scare us about him all by himself. McCain is a celebrity just cracks me up. If Obama keeps it up, this will be a very humors election season.
