Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

When does the book written by Corsi become a hate crime?

Penalty-enhancement hate crime laws are traditionally justified on the grounds that, in Chief Justice Rehnquist's words, "this conduct is thought to inflict greater individual and societal harm.... bias-motivated crimes are more likely to provoke retaliatory crimes, inflict distinct emotional harms on their victims, and incite community unrest."

So...where does that put Corsi's Book on Obama? Hate or just free to lie about someone!

You obviously meant John Kerry at the end there. Put the whip to your interns who write this slop.

We have had enough of Republican Presidents lying to the American public and playing dumb when they get caught. Do they really think we are so stupid that we would buy the explanation that he answered a question that he didn't hear? And of course, now that he knows the question, he has no comment. McCain is a liar just like George W. If he is elected he will lie to us just like Bush to do whatever he wants to do. McCain, Bush, & Cheney are the reason I switched to Democrat. I'm sick of their lying.

Actually, McCain needs to use this in a clever way. Don't comment on it, don't dismiss it, don't denouce it. Instead, use PAC's and the RNC to keep bringing it up and citing the issues raised by the book. He can't afford to comment himself, however, he MUST use this to withstand the barrage of lies from Barack.

    Bush = Obama
No experience, uniter not divider (LOL)
They are two sides of the same coin, a bad penny.

Unfortunately, this is business as usual for the Republicans. They have no real issues to run on this year so they resort to BS.

McCain said that he wanted to run a clean campaign. Looks like he tels the truth as well as George W does.

He didn't hear the question??? That's pretty scary if it's true.

Who is to say that this book could be true. We never know because we do not know Obama at all. He does not allow any questions of him. I can't wait to read the book "obama nation" because I have a feeling the book is probably more true then false. As a democrat I do not know Obama enough to support him. So its McCain for me and many other dems.

Is this why McCain's handlers don't want him to be around the media? He might actually express his real views. Lies spouted by hateful bigots are not funny, Mr. McCain.

Americans are good at picking the wrong guy... You'll pick McCain, you'll have WWIII started way before you'd realize it... And your tears will be red!!
I have to say we, the world, will be better off without a happy-triggerer like McCain! I hope I won't be anywhere near the States when this man starts attacking Afghanistan, blowing up The Koreas, bomb-bomb-bombing Iran and nuking Russia, because nobody will know where the nuclear weapons will come from... Geez, God help us all!!! :(

McCain heard the question and made another one of his stupid comments.

Buchanan trying to cover-up with another lie for McCAin.

FROM THE PRESS: “Jackson Browne sues McCain, RNC over song in ad”.
“The 59-year-old singer claims his reputation has already been damaged and is seeking more than $75,000 in damages. (Ooops, there go the campaign funds!)
The suit notes that other musicians, including ABBA and John Cougar Mellencamp, have asked McCain to stop using their work”.

Ask a high school rock band to come up with some original lyrics for your jingle and please stop trying to be funny using low road tactics!

Don't you mean 'then democratic party nominee John Kerry?" I don't think McCain was the democratic nominee in 2004.

This position of "no comment" is the last straw for me. I guess McCain with this McBush tactic is going to force me to fork over 2k I don't have to Barack Obama. Ironically, McCain defended Kerry from this same guy. I use to like him, but I guess McCain will do anything to be Prez.

Maybe next time McCane needs to bring along his trusty hearin' horn so he can hear the questions he's answering.

Personally, ANYONE advocating "change" better tell me what changes they are talking about. So far, I haven't heard diddly about Mr. Obama's. GIVE ME SOME SPECIFICS, please!

McCain first laughs at the book, and when there is fallout, he then claims he "didn't hear the question"? Mr. McCain can't simply plead ignorance or say his hearing aid was out. He heard the question just fine. And with the follow up, it's even worse. By not commenting at all on the book, some will take that as McCain standing on the sidelines and watching the smear fly at Obama.

Karl Rove would be so proud.

I guess we can blame his age for hearing loss but we know it's just that he is just a dispicable person @ heart. I remember in the 90's when he proposed a question"why is Chelsea so ugly ? Because Janet Reno is her father." He is a mean spirited person form the beginning .

    Uhhhh...time to proof read.
I believe the author meant for the last word/name in the article to be Kerry and not McCain.
