Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

If he didn't hear the question, maybe he shouldn't have answered it. Or is this McCain's standard answer to all questions. He really does think this election is a joke.

Most Americans have an excellent sense of humor. We enjoy a good laugh at clowns as much as the next country. That's why we enjoy the Republicans so much. To be honest, when either McCain or Bush speak, I often laugh so hard it brings me to tears. Like any comedy routine, though, there comes a time when the jokes aren't very funny anymore. Keep your sense of humor Mr. McCain. You're going to need it once the campaign starts in ernest after the conventions...

I am so sick of Obama whining about everything. John McCain didn't write the book, did he? Why should he have to condemn it.

Does Sen. McCain make it a habit to answers questions he didn't hear. Are there voices inside his head?

Man, John and his gang can't even lie well.

He didn't hear the question? What did he hear that caused him to answer the question he didn't hear? What an insult to votors. Liar! Very dishonorable!

Its not the falsehoods that bother me, its the things in the book that are true that bother me about Sen. Obama.

Sounds like a great book for the science fiction section of Wal-Mart.

McCain really scares me and I think he should retire.

That Obama- cries foul unless he is the one spreading the lies and doing the smearing.

Obama's mistake was dividing the democratic party- thinking he was so persuasive that he could simply snap his fingers and make a speech instructing people to "unite now" and all of his vitriolic anti-Hillary slanderous insults and sexist put downs would be forgotten.

NOT so. Swiftboating your own is worse than anything the republicans can now do to OBAMA.

    Obama is one bossy know-it-all.

Please tell me what Mr. Corsi will do once Mr. Obama is elected President of these United States? Hopefully leave the country and take Mr. McCain (who needs a hearing aid since he seems to not here questions correctly) and move to Moronia.

If people really care about the direction of this country, they will certainly look at the kind of campaign that is being run by the Republicans. I know the world is. We are heading for disaster if John McCain wins, we will be in a world war. Everyone keeps talking about the experience and look at where we are with not only our country in trouble, but our respect in the world has is all but shot. and look who has been in the white house for 25 or 30 years and have voted along with this failed administrtion, John McCain.

How convenient, he didn't hear the question. Now his hearing is gone too. This man is way too old to run our country. We need a breath of fresh air. He should check himself into a nursing home.

  20. Just an editorial comment...

I thought John Kerry was the 2004 dem pres nominee, not John McCain, as the last line of your blog reads...

I'm fairly certain Barack Obama would denounce any book that used lie after lie to smear his opponent. Time after time I'm reminded of the huge divide between the character of these two men. I wonder if other former POW's are ashamed to call John McCain one of their own.

Here we go again ... a Commander-in-chief to be with some hearing problems, to say the very least.
