Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

What's this? Is Mr. McCain supposed to re-read Corsi's book for himself, run over the author with a bus, denounce the author(like Obama did pastor wright after holding allegiance to him after 20 years), and flip-flop a bunch of answers (like Obambi himself)??

Seriously, I think Mr. McCain has better things to do than play protector for Obambi.

Perhaps if Mr. Obama would get up the guts to come to a debate with Mr. McCain they could mention it.

    GO McCain '08

So if he didn't hear, what did he think he heard? Why did he give an answer?

He heard the question very well, and wanted to be funny by his answer, only this time, it didn't work!

This tells you a lot about a person who wants to be president of the United States.
    Be wise America.

Corsi and Matalin have always believed strongly in the old edict: "Nobody ever lost money underestimating the intelligence of the American People." Until the edict is no longer true, they will continue to lie and make money doing it.

Wait...what I said was wrong? Ok, then I didn't mean to say it. There. Done. It was never said. I have no comment whatsoever. The Old Creep McSame is at it again.

McCain needs to turn on his hearing aids so he can respond to questions asked of him. If he didn't hear a simple question, how's he going to hear the phone in the White House ringing at 3 am with some crisis?

I think the "then-Democratic presidential nominee" you are referring to is John Kerry, not John McCain in the last sentence of the article..

I haven't read the book, but according to many Corsi is sort of a 'nut case' and you do need to keep a sense of humor about this type of thing. I don't think it is any different than someone making a fictional movie about the President. I guess we could live in a country where we could lock these guys up. That would be a great solution, huh!

I am sure the voters have the intelligence to determine what's true and what's fiction.

John McCain was a 'then Democratic presidential nominee'? Alex you need to post a correction.

In truth the more and more I see/hear of Obama it appears the man is not to thick skinned.
Do I want a whiner for a president? Do I want someone who is going to cry at everything said about him?

The truth is Obama is a bigger hoax than the gorilla suit stuffed in the ice-chest in Georgia.

I also will not vote for Mcain I may just sit this one out. Really though Obama stop whining if your the change in old politics then prove it.

There, see, he didn't hear the question. Even if he'd heard it, he doesn't remember the book you're talking about...he doesn't, wait, what are we talking about. Czech...Viag...no, wait...oh yeah, the book.

Look, leave the guy alone already, he doesn't know what you're saying.

I would rather "not hear the question" than "push the wrong button on the vote".

Obama needs to fight back his past for himself, it has nothing to do with Mr. McCain.

He didn't hear the question? You have got to be kidding right? Who in their right mind would ever want this bozo running this country.

I don't understand how everything is condemned as false in the book, when there is documentation and evidence presented. Why slam it before reading it?

I think you mean "then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry."

    Obama has a "book" problem.

Obama attempts to make it about McCain.

    Same old Washington politics.
