Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Does anyone at CNN check their facts? Somebody needs to read that last sentence again. I don't think McCain was ever the democratic presidential nominee.

Senator McCain should stand up for the truth, regardless of politics. Shame on him. It seems often his flipant comments back fire.

Jerome Corsi has met his match this time. Senator Obama will not stand back and let lies ruin his reputation. His supporters will not stand for it either. Corsi can write anything he wishes, but he should answer legally for his defamation of Barack Obama's character.

Hatred, bigotry and outright dishonesty are not American values.

I'm all about a sense of humor! I think it will be hilarious when McCain loses in November and the GOP is stripped of as many senatorial seats, both nationally, and in as many states as possible, and Republican mayors lose their elections. It will be "knee-slappingly," hysterically funny when the GOP (Greedy Old People) party ceases to have any political clout or impact any more! Maybe then, these outdated old geezers will actually hear the questions asked of them. Many of them should be in jail. Go Obama!

Oh brother like a book was never written slamming someone. Look at that idiot Dick Morris and his obsession with ridiculing Hillary all the time. I think he even wrote a book about her when she was first lady.

Someone asks him a question that he doesn't hear and he says, "Gotta keep yer sense of humor."??? What did he think he was being asked? And apparently when he was told what it was that he actually was asked he says he will not be commenting on that. What a straight talker!

WHAT ABOUT JOHN MCCAIN CRASHING 5 US NAVY PLANES.
DOES THIS MEANS HE WAS A LOUSY PILOT?

HOW ABOUT HIM LEAVING HIS FIRST WIFE FOR CINDY?
DOES THAT MAKE HIM ANY BETTER THAN EDWARDS?

Does anyone wonder if Obama consults with this DNC Rapid Response Team? What the hell is it? From this response, it sounds as they're a bunch of hand-picked paranoid freaks just sitting around waiting for some juicy story or mis-speak and immediately notify the world that McCain farted in public! What a sad state the DNC must be in.

I hear alot of people bash obama supporters for not knowing enough about Obama's policies, but can anyone in the room tell me one thing about what McCain plans do as the Leader of one of the Worlds Super Powers? When China starts calling in its maasive debt or flexing its military might, laughing it off is going to get us where?

I don't know what is more sad, being able to publish such lies, or that people will actually believe them.

Republican or Democrat, this is no way to run for office.

You left wing guys & girls are a hoot! GET OVER IT!

BTW. CNN still didn't correct their article. "Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" — the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee ???."

Senator McCain had better rethink his own sense of humor should a book surface now or in the near future regarding his past life.
He has his own scandals from the past which are known and being kept on the back burner. Corsi is on a mission with a desire to attack Senator Obama with lies and false accusations.
John McCain should keep the campaign free from this kind of thing by denouncing it from the get go. He promised a respectful campaign as did Senator Obama. Let's keep it that way. There are far more important issues plaguing the American people. And we are eager to hear how things can be improved as we await the coming election.
