Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

Excellent so we're possibly looking to nominate a man for the most powerful position in the world who can't hear a question properly but will answer it regardless. Very interesting indeed.

So Mr. President, do you think it's wise to start WWIII?

McCain: Yes, I think it's very wise.......wait I mean no. Wait what was the question, I forgot it already.

I think the Straight Talk Express is spinning and about to crash. If John McCain didn't hear the question, why did he answer it? Honestly, is this man capable of being President? I think not.

Don't you just love the respect that the Obama Nation has for our elders and statesman. Someday you too will be old and I hope that you have accomplished half of what John McCain has accomplished in his life.
'No wonder our country is in such a mess. We are producing college graduates with no respect for anyone and no knowledge of our history.

American can't afford a president who would speak non-sense before hearing a question. Terrible and lousy excuse for someone who wants to be my president.

Maybe it's just another example of McCain "not speaking for the campaign ".

As an independent, I see that the Dems are not whining. They are quick to respond to these attacks because in the past John Kerry was not quick to respond. I think the Dems are doing an excellent job.

I think McSame did hear/understand the question and meant to give the answer he gave. Why is anyone surprised at the type of campaign being run by the McSame camp and the RNC? I'm not and I don't OBAMA and his camp are surprised. In the beginning we all knew they will do anything and I mean that literally to disrupt the OBAMA camp and or get McSame in office. More of this LOW ROAD stuff to come in the future. I wish that wasn't the way it is but we all know.

What do you expect, I have NO respect for McCain and or the GOP. They have shown their true colors. McCain is not a man of his word, I don’t even know why people expect him to reject this trash book, he wants to be president so bad he will do anything. Im very very disappointed with McCain it is clear that he will do anything to win. How sad!

McCain seems to be saying more questionable things the last few weeks. To be fair maybe its the strain of campaigning. The question is, if we accept the spin then just what did he think the reporter asked him? What other events have been happening the last week or two where people need to maintain a sense of humor? CNN you should go ask his campaign.

Funny how the Dems aren't screaming "that's swiftboating!" about conspiracy-theorist Oliver Stone's biopic of Bush, which is scheduled for release just prior to the election. Stone is well known for injecting pure fantasy into his movies, which the less-than-historically-educated public will interpret as fact. After all, if it's about real people and in print or on film then it must be true, right?

Why is this shocking to anyone? McCain will do or say anything to get elected. Nothing wrong with that. It's up to the voters to decide if that's who they want as President. And right now, that's what close to half this country wants.....

If he speaks without being asked question, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Maybe he should also undergo an psychiatric exam to determine if he's hearing things too. And his hand could be on the pulse of the nation. Lord Help Us!

You can be muslim and not practice the religion of Islam. His father is Muslim. His step father is muslim. He was raised muslim in a muslim country andhas a muslim name. He is at least half muslim, undeniably. He does not practice Islam currently. That's a seperate point.
