Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

He may not have heard the question, but he gave the correct answer.

It's a political campaign not a pillow fight, people.......either grow a set or laugh it off.

McCain learned his lesson well when he was crucified by Bush in 2000. Has had a chip on his shoulder ever since. BUT..he must figure that if it worked for Bush, maybe it'll work for him. I'm beginning to wonder if he is more dangerous that Bush & Cheney combined. Is his mind slowing down? He's not impressive at all.

McCain is behind all of this, that is why they were meeting in Aspen today. He heard the reporter ask about that book, he made his comment and his entourage got him out of there. They knew what was coming. McCain is satan's brother. He does not have any morals at all, and he wants to run the country, how can he, he can't even HEAR!!

I choose to give McCain the benefit of doubt here but that he wouldn't be commenting on the book...no no no....silence on such a serious issue can only mean a YES to the book on the part of John McCain. I think i used to respect McCain more than his these days show of character...........

Seems to me that Obama should have more to worry about than a book. Hey Obama, if the shoe fits, wear it !!

So maybe Senator McCain thought the smear campaign against him in the 2000 Republican primary was funny too. I’m sure he got tons of laughs out of that.

I know it's one of the hardest things to prove in court being a former journalism student but couldn't Senator Obama (and for that matter John Kerry in '04) sue for libel and/or slander or does that not apply to books?

Obama never defended Bill Clinton when the media painted him as a racist.

I fear that John McCain is to much of a loose canon to be President. A president is supposed to be guarded about remarks made as he/she will always be under the microscope and furthermore should not be prone to making flippant remarks. Can a leopard change it's spots?

So there are two possibilities. McCain is now lying and he did hear the question. Or, McCain wllingly answers questions when he has no idea what people said. Is either type of person what you want in a president?

Boy sounds like Mr. Corsi has a personal axe to grind.......Maybe he should put more energy into helping the Republican Party figure out answers to some of the problems facing our country such as the housing foreclosures........the failing economy........and how to win the war in Iraq and bring our troops home.
