Campaign says McCain didn't hear question on attack book

McCain isn't commenting on Corsi's new book.

(CNN) - John McCain's campaign is denying Democratic charges the presumptive Republican nominee flippantly dismissed a new book attacking Barack Obama that includes several documented falsehoods.

Asked by the Associated Press earlier Friday what he though of author Jerome Corsi's new book, "The Obama Nation," McCain said, "gotta keep your sense of humor."

Those comments were immediately slammed by the Obama campaign and the Democratic National Committee, which e-mailed its 3.4 million supporters declaring, "John McCain thinks smears and lies are funny."

"Despite pledging to run a respectful campaign, McCain is just standing by while Corsi and his publisher, former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin, poison this presidential race," read the e-mail from DNC Rapid Response Team.

Watch: Is Obama being swift-boated?

But McCain spokeswoman Brooke Buchanan said later Thursday the Arizona senator actually did not hear the question, and would not be commenting on the book.

The book, which is expected to debut No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list, repeats many long-discredited falsehoods about the Illinois senator, including the claim that he is Muslim.

Corsi, who has said he's on a “mission” to take down Obama, also co-wrote "Unfit for Command" - the 2004 book that spawned the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth attacks against then-Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry.

McCain has zero honor. He lied about a campaign being about the issues. How is this about the issues?

  2. Be Honest About it.

Why would anybody call it the truth when it has been disproven already?
Even the author has stated publicly, just this week, these are not facts.
He claims he is putting forth questions for the sole purpose of bringing down an honest candidate . Even the author is not trying to push this
off as factual. Just a smear, a lie. If the author himself will not even stand behind his work, why would the republican party try to stand behind it?

  7. I know... you're kidding, right?

OK, McCain still thinks that countries that no longer exist...still do, has to have Joe Blow on tap to whisper the right answers in his ear on questions concerning Iraq, does not know countries in the Mideast do & do not boarder each other, says he voted for the Martin Luther King holiday oops didn't do that. "Says" he's oh so for the troops / vets yet apposed (and didn't bother to show up for the vote anyway) Jim Webb's GI bill, did not support supplying our men & woman in Iraq with needed body armor or properly protected vehicles when the war was in it's early years...
Now we learn he can not even hear... so lets see who is it that is not ready to lead???

What about McCain's affair. He was involved with his current wife before he divorsed his ex. Sounds just like Edwards to me. Why is his career not affected?

So first he proves to the world repeatedly he cannot remember things, like who borders Afghanistan, who Iran is supporting in Iraq, that Czechoslovakia no longer exists, that most veterans groups rate him a "D" or worse, or even what position he held last week on taxes, immigration, energy, or the economy.

    Now he "can't hear"?

Republicans come on. most of you are good people with (some) decent ideas. THIS IS YOUR MAN? Come on.

why does mccain HAVE to comment on this guys book about obama?why does the obama campaign whine about it every single time that someone, anyone, says something that happens to have some grain of truth to it? if obama insists on keeping people in the dark and playing the victim (boo hoo hoo) then he has no one to blame but himself when he loses the presidency. one CAN NOT run for the presidency without the people wanting, and demanding, to know what they are getting. he has done an excellent job thus far at never telling us who he is and what he believes in and what his specific plans of actions are. and so people like this writer, and many others, have NO CHOICE but to define obama. if he doesnt like it then let him go back to his job as a far left radical liberal. geez.

All you guys need to dust off your Websters and review the meaning of the word, "OPPONENT".

Neither candidate owes the other a staunch defense when confronted with smears and jeers about that candidate from an independent source! That is crazy.
If the damaging and unfounded accusations came directly from the McCain camp, then yes, McCain has a moral responsibility to address the situation and denounce the perpretrators immediately.
But No candidate should be expected to research bad press about their OPPONENT for the sake of defending them on it!
If Hillary doesnt definitively know the answer to whether or not Obama is a Muslim, the best answer is the truth..."I dont know that he is a Muslim."
If you can prove your conspiracy theories about how Hillary and John are scheming to ruin Obama- then do so. IF not, you need to look in the mirror before you accuse other people of Smears.

RC ignorantly says: "Do some non-partisan due diligence & the facts portray an unfavorable light on Obama's true character once you get past the hype."

RC – go ahead – give us one proven fact. All of your so-called "facts" have been disproven by actual hard evidence. So come on, let's hear your facts. People like you come on here and talk big boo, but never back it up with anything other than ignorance.

There we go again. McCain thinks that getting people to hate Obama will put him in power to continue the dumb Republicans policies. We need to here the issues and not hate. We need free education to ivest in people's development and free health care.

Maybe those things that Bush and his campaign called McCain dowin at Bob Jones University is true after all, it McCain is not man enough to condemn the lies and inuendoes of Jerome Corsi's book and his statements.
This is especially true after McCain promised to run a clean campaign, which he far from so far. That proves his word is worth nothing, not even the paper it is printed on or the air that carries it so you can hear it.
I called people to vote for McCain in 2000, but that will never happen again, I will do all I can to get him defeated by 20 points and will work to get any other republican defeated, especially those who back him.

You are not correct. One chooses to be Muslim. That is like saying you're born Catholic or Seven Day Adventist. My name is Mary and I am not Catholic. Catholics pray to Mary-does that make me Catholic. Jesus what a Jew are Mexicans, named Jesus, Jewish? My husband 's name is John-does that make him a Chistian? He and his parents are not Christians. I have a dog name St. Joan-what religion is she?
